“That’s a notebook, that doesn’t count.” Oh god... that’s a WHOLE different topic
I just use notebooks to draw in!
Beautiful Artwork I can’t draw on pages with lines lol
I buy way to many school supplies for person that hasn't seen a classroom in almost 7 years ✌🏻😂
Helvetica09 every year I get gifted notebooks, even though I take all my notes digitally and have for like 3 years, I use them for writing first drafts but sometimes they end up for art in a desperate attempt to full them xD
That's worse, oh gods that's worst
0:35 "In my defense, a lot of them are gifts."
WHY HAVEN'T I THOUGHT OF THAT!?!? Time to save money on supplies
all of mine are gifts 💀🤚 and I'll still get sketchbooks as gifts I just need to ask
me: I’m so bored, I wish I had something to d-
UA-cam notification: Jelarts has posted a video
me: tHANK the lord
same lol
Blip
Not gonna lie I said the exact thing
Man so many people in the comments have a bunch of sketchbooks. Meanwhile i only have one and im to scared to draw in it bc im scared ill ruin it.
Go for it! I'm sure whatever you create will be amazing!
Sketchbooks are meant to be free and experiment! You can do it!!
@@mushoftheroom7307 Thank u so much!
@@mushoftheroom7307 Thank u so much!
Hey, guess what! Ruining it is the point. As long as you learn while you do it, ruining your sketchbook should be your goal :)
Nothing stunts progress like feeling as if you have to make everything perfect on the first try, so go for it!! Have fun!! Make art!! Or not!! Just learn!!
I wonder if it would be fun to do a “slam” style challenge with some of them... maybe even use them to make a “slam series” where you give yourself a timeline (a week, a day, a month) to fill the book and do a sketchbook tour when you’ve filled each one of the sketchbooks. Another idea could be to organize them by theme, like a backgrounds book, a portraits book, an animal book, a gouache book, etc.
This year i started a portraits only sketchbook (because i want to work on expression and avoiding the “same face syndrome”. So thats part of my 2020 art goal..
Kristy Joy Schoyen those are good ideas thank you for that!
You know i don't really watch art videos cause i get demotivated. But your videos, you don't make everything seem so easy you show you practise and show the backstage of the art you make and the effort you have put. Thank u
@Ink, Quill, & Marker watch a video of drawing wiff waffles earlier sketchbook videos. She has not good stuff there because she was just getting started in drawing. I think currently she's on #26. So she has alot of drawing under her belt.
I know how that feel to have sketchbooks that aren’t finished but you really want to fill them❤️😜📚
I don't have any extra. I have this thing about having to use everything I have before moving on even if I just want something new. It is an odd sort of torture.
Practical torture. You make sure the next one you will really enjoy or else!
Omg same! im a sketchbook hoarder. i have a whole library of unused ones, in the hopes that it would motivate me to draw more. lol i currently have 30 unused 😩 and im sure the number will only increase 🤦🏽
I use printer paper and a three-ring binder I guess that's cheating because only the good drawings go in it
30?? I have like 3 and all of them were gifts
I am the superior life form, peak of human evolution!!!! I have ENTIRELY finished ALL of my sketchbooks!¡!!¡
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS TOO MANY SKETCHBOOKS!!!!!!
Yes there are.
Faxx
I want more
In my case if they are regular sketch paper or larger than 8” they won’t get used because I like sketching smaller and with watercolor, so if I have more than one it is too many. I mostly use smaller mixed media paper and I can’t have enough of those
You’re very wrong on that one
I have two empty sketchbooks lying around, I’m almost done with my current one. One of the empty sketchbooks has really nice watercolor paper and the other one is for dry media/studies.
I love finishing sketchbooks and it makes me very sad to see them unfinished and lonely. The only issue with this is that I have to keep myself from buying cool new sketchbooks, because I know it will take me a long time to get to starting them.
Same, I know people have that problem with not using their sketchbooks but it's kind of annoying seeing so many go to waste cause their just sitting there
me: ha that's a lot! I dont have that many!
*goes through all sketchbooks to see how many I have*
Turns out I got 44 empty sketchbooks
Wow!!!
Why use a SketchBook I use printer paper and hole punch when drawing and put it in a 3-ring binder
Are sketchbooks really better?
mike bahnsen they are if you are using wet materials or just want high quality paper in general. Your method works fine though
@@mikebahnsen8810 I travel a lot with my sketchbooks and usually have different sketchbooks for different projects - it helps me a lot to orden things. I don't want my school project getting combined with my own comic for example. Whenever I work on loose sheets of paper they either crumble in my bag or I lose them, because I'm way too messy of a person :p
Whatever works for you is the best!
Oh no, i'm glad i'm not the only one with many sketchbooks!!! haha xD
Oh btw the big grey sketchbook is probably from the brand called Hahnemühle!
You’re right!

Would you be able to do a video explaining the difference between the sketchbook types (sketch, watercolour, mixed media) and the paper types and how thickness/texture of paper affects your art? What makes you like a book and what makes you dislike working in it? Thanks!
love the tank, fishless cycles are frustrating but worth it. lol
damn I wish I had this many sketchbooks, I have two and one is entirely full and I'm almost done with the second. sketchbooks are an expensive luxury in my family which sucks :(( loved the video tho babe
These have accumulated over the last several years! But they can definitely be pretty expensive. I'd recommend grabbing one of the big artist loft sketchbooks from Michael's and using a coupon on it. You get a lot of paper for a decent price, and the colours are really fun. It's the same kind as my giant pink one in this video.
@@JelArts I'm in the UK so I don't have a Micheals near me but I do try to keep my eye out for cheaper sketchbooks. thanks for the reply! 💘💘
@@friendlyenby I feel ya bro. I live in germany and i don't have much options either ;-;
Al Skyler I live in Austria and I don’t have that much options either .-. You should check out Arteza, you can find them on amazon or on their own website and I can really recommend them. I bought a set of 3 A5 watercolor spiral bound books for 21€ but they have all different kinds of paper and sketchbooks and in my opinion they’re really great considering the price.
I have this problem. I have many sketchbooks I need to fill and I keep buying more.
The more I look at artists online the more I will see that a lot of us work in different ways! It’s crazy because we all love doing the same thing and it’s art! 🤯💕
I'm used to have a sketch or notebook per a topic (drawing, writing, quotes, beautiful pictures , gratitude journal...) and few months ago, I decided to mix everything doing just "art journaling" (with a bit of gratitude journal). I'm quite motived and have almost finished a sketchbook in a week :)
I used to get sketchbook after sketchbook without really finishing one. After a while it started bothering me to have so many empty. So now I just have a few different ones specifically for different mediums
I want to be like that too! :)
Oh my goodness, I have the same problem! My deal is that I have so many mostly empty sketch books. I’ll get about 10 pages in before I’ll want to “start fresh.” What is that? 🤣
Cassie Z&3 Art same problem here. I get a new sketchbook, fill 10-15 pages and get another one. I don’t think I’ve ever finished an entire sketchbook. It’s really frustrating.
Brenda I have nearly finished only one in my life. Save the last two or three pages. It’s crazy!! I’d love to have a full sketchbook. I think I get so preoccupied with making them “pretty” and when a sketch doesn’t turn out, I abandon the whole book. 🤦♀️
Cassie Z&3 Art Exactly. It’s a really bad habit.
Your sketchbook practice has really helped me. I find it an inspiration.
Thank you so much!
I can relate to this.
I only have spiral bound sketchbooks with very few pages filled in. I ended up opening the spines of some sketchbooks and removing the sheets carefully. I noticed that I tend to draw more often on loose leaf paper than on sketchbooks. It’s a lot better than dealing with the binding on the side.
I don’t have any empties... I tend to only buy one when the current one is full.
I can totally relate to you. I have a bunch of blank sketchbooks but I also end up wanting more. I am going to try to use what I have too. I loved this video by the way, it was highly entertaining and just fun to see you share your collection :)
This is probably the most relatable video on UA-cam
I got merchandise from your store for Christmas and I put your stickers on my new sketchbook and my current one! And in the little package there was an extra free print and 3 stickers (dog paws and plants, a tutu worm, and a dog with a hat) that my sister didn’t even know about when she ordered them! It was definitely in my top three favourite gifts! Thank you! :D
Edit: I also got an arteza sketchbook, and I put all the extra stickers in the plastic pocket
For some reason the phrase "a tutu worm" just gave me the giggles so bad 😂😂😂
Oh haha I think those were discontinued stickers so that's why you haven't heard of them! I'm glad you enjoyed the gift! :)
Jel:Oh this was a gift, Oh I bought this, a gift -“
Me: Mom!!! T-T would you please give me a sketchbook instead of a stethoscope ? 😭
Wtf a stethoscope??
i just bought a new sketchbook and i’m
making my friend hide it from me
until i can show her that the one i’m
currently using is full 😂 cause i definitely have a sketchbook hoarding problem
omg i love the seasonal changes to the intro. its so cute
Thank you!!
@@JelArts ur welcomee
I know the feeling. I recently purchased a 3-pack of 8.5 x 5.5 sketch pads thinking they'd be more portable. And they are. But I really don't like the paper. I work mostly in pencil and the graphite smudges too easily. Turns out my favourite paper for pencil sketching is cheap-y recycled office paper. XD
Oh yeah printer paper/office paper is actually surprisingly nice for pencil stuff!
Oh thank god lmao
I’m pretty sure this video made so many people feel better about having many empty/ unfinished sketchbooks 😂💕
Off topic but I'd love to see a lil video on all of your plants and your future aquarium!!
thank you for uploading right when i got home
👁👄👁
I feel this so much I currently have about 57 unused sketchbooks and I'm just too scared to start on the more expensive ones.
doodlecircus I was watching a jeweler talk about the value of jewelry once and basically he said “what’s the use of having it if you don’t use it? If you are waiting for special occasions you will usually be disappointed, so make your own occasions and enjoy what you have”. It stuck with me and I think that’s how you have to view a precious sketchbook. It will be even more special when it’s filled with things you created. Even if stuff doesn’t turn out perfect you will learn for next time.
It's a brave thing to show :)
I never saw a video like this before, only tours of perfect executed "sketchbooks" that look more like artbooks.
I feel personally attacked by this video 😂😂
I get so happy when u post a video thank you it’s really appreciated
Thank you for being kind to your shrimp and cycling the tank and doing the right thing 🙏
I tell myself that all the time, but every time I come across an interesting sketchbook (shape or texture) I usually end up convincing myself that I have to have it. Now I've got a plastic bin full. But I'm like Gollum: Me Precious!
I have soooooooo many empty sketchbooks. One of the art stores here went out of business and i pretty much bought everything in the world. I wish i could post a photo to show you how many there are. Lol
Whoa that's awesome though!! I wish I could see that photo haha.
I’m guilty buying sketchbooks. But in my defense when I was in college they required us to use a new sketchbook each term. So the rest were either gifts from family or me buying said sketchbook and not resisting the temptation. :(
My sketchbooks tend to have just a few pages filled minimally. I did start to finish sketchbooks. I love nano tanks. I used to have shrimp. They are super fun to have.
I usually finish sketchbooks, except for when I don't like the paper, then i dont come near it ever again
I just had to watch this video because I can relate 😂 I have a lot of sketchbooks just piling up in my little corner, either bought or gifted, some even have their plastics intact. I did plan to use them but I never did because I'm really stubborn about finishing this cheap sketchbook (about $2) I started long long ago in an attempt to get over my fear of "ruining" nice expensive sketchbooks. Bad move though because of how bad the sketchbook is, like when a sketchbook just gives you a bad experience🙄
I have 3 empty sketchbooks... and I thought I had a lot until I saw this video XD
glad I’m not the only one
I live in a country where art is not taken seriously so we have no shops dedicated for art and amazon doesn't ship here, I have only access to very large watercolor paper that I cut into smaller pieces to use, I really Really want a nice sketchbook like the one that closes with a band, you're lucky you have so many don't take it for granted + your art is really beautiful don't ever stop.
I've got about 6 of them. I've started in all of them, but I'm trying to focus on filling 1 or 2. And trying to keep them organized by styles and medium.
This is super relatable. I have a couple dozen that I either doodled on like a page or Haven’t touched or have not finished for various reasons.
"i will use them" yeah keep telling that urself like i did..now i have more than 5 of those
lane girl love your username! ❤️||-//
@@yara6824 aaa thanks♡ ||-//
I have 10 blank sketch books. 3 - 5x8 softbound books, because I like them, and stuff I like seems to always disappear from stores. So I stock piled them. 2 - 3x5 softbound watercolor books. I'm just starting to play with watercolor, so small and cheap work for now. 2 - spiral sketchbooks I bought 40 years ago, in high school, that I never used but still had in storage. 2 - 4x6 hardcovers, another stockpile move and 1 - 3x5 hardcover that I will carry with me when my current pocket sketchbook is full. I like using the pocket sketch at malls and cafe for gesture and people sketching.
miniso has the cutest sketchbooks! I got a two-pack of thin string-bound sketchbooks but I don't use them because of how thin the paper is :(
Okay I'm not the only one. That's a relief.
When I plan on using an old Sketch book thats partially used, I put a rubberband around the used pages so I dont get discouraged by my less impressive but necessary scribbles. I have a rainbow set so it doesnt look as bland as the regular tan ones.
Omg give me all of them 😂😂😍👍
Haven’t watch the video yet but you know that feeling when you go to a store and see a cute sketchbook but you already have too many empty ones
now thats a mood
The most relateable thing lol
I also have bad habit of getting bored of a sketchbook and then buy a new one
thanks for sharing! i love seeing others' stashes and what their plans are for the books.
I'm a lifelong journaler so I have a box of composition notebooks (the 50 cents ones) and a handful of travelers notebook blanks I always need--no empty sketchbooks! I only have one other journal with a pretty, meaningful-to-me cover that I just look at. The other ones I gifted away. I'm using the big Artist Loft sketchbook too--so affordable and inviting.
My goal this year is to finish up my current sketchbook! It's got not one, but two years' worth of inktobers in it now... and only ten pages left, I'd really like to finish it off within the next month or so, so I can use the really pretty one my boyfriend got me forever ago
The Rabbit in the Chef's hat is *adorable* ❤️😁.
I'm taking the Sketchbook Oath too! I already have far too many unused and I'm a sucker for new ones. 🤣
I bought a bunch of them a few years ago, but never drew in them. One I've started filling recently and I've done quite a lot of drawings and paintings in it this month. When I bought the sketch books, I was more attracted to doing paintings on canvas board, canvas pad and watercolour paper than drawing in the sketch book. I bought a few new ones recently, too, because I want to practice watercolour paintings and doing some tutorials on here, and tutorials in some drawing books that I have - a lot of the drawings I have done up until now have been without that input (though I have followed some of the drawing books that I have, just not as much as I'd like to.) I think it's rather too easy to accumulate sketch books like it is to accumulate paint sets. However, I don't think that you need to get rid of them, just make a conscious effort to draw in them.
I noticed this issue a few years ago and have been filling books since! Have fun making lots of art!
Hey gurl, you're not alone. I have a pile of books, some I even deliberately purchased so I could use them, and they aren't being used...but in my defense, they were on sale and I had let some really good wine breathe before I started shopping.
So we could blame my lack of intent, or we could blame it on the alcohol.
The ones I am currently using are slow going, because I am taking serious care about what I am doing in them. Plus, I can only fill like 1 page every day or two that I can actually finish a piece.
I work too much...but NYC in May won't pay for itself. Plus, I enjoy spending my money on clothes, or D&D stuff.
I have a bunch, I've been getting better at not buying more as ive found I'm kind of picky lol I can't own two of the same sketchbook, this is probably because I name my sketchbooks (I've named one matilda for fun) and idk I just can't draw, it feels like a betrayal xD I don't like dotted or gray paper and sketchbooks with not many pages scare me cuz I know a majority of the sketchbook will be shitty sketches .
I do have a stack of large sketchbooks (a3 and a4) that I haven't touched in awhile. They just seem really intimidating...
Love ur art❤️❤️
This video is so satisfying haha. Thanks for sharing! I love your sketching style and the way you think. ❤
(Those lil blue/green ones and the big grey one are by hahnemuhle!)
Last year i completed at least 3 old sketch books. I think i am finishing the oast of a started sketchbook, not including my two inktober /challenge sketchbooks. I also have quite a selection bought, gifted and that i have handmade
This has been a year like no other I hope you had time to fill up some of those sketchbooks!
Im working in three different sized mixed media sketchbooks. But I have a few empty journals and drawing paper sketchbooks that were gifts. I haven't used them yet because they're not the type I prefer.
you guys are so lucky to have so many empty sketchbooks- i literally have none. i buy a sketchbook every time i fill the one I have been using (which takes a few weeks to a month) and i wish i didn't have to go to the store to buy a new one so often- my parents won't let me buy a lot, haha.
sometimes i end up doodling on notebook paper- better yet, homework, when i dont have a sketchbook :,)
I have 5 sketchbooks that i am currently working on...........and i dont know what else i can use as a sketchbook until i saw the blank notebooks like you do.♡♡♡♡♡♡
I have the same problem.... I lost the count, I don't know how many I have now... but definetly so many.
Glad I'm not the only one with a load of empty sketchbooks XD I can't help but buy and buy, they're too gooddd
jel squashing the leaves on her plant throughout the beginning of the video-
i too also have a large variety of sketchbooks, however each one will have one drawing. watercolour ones are my favourite, as well as mixed media
Woah your aquarium is so cool! I have the same I think! Good luck with it! 🦐🐟
Also nice video 👍
I have about 5 unfinished/untouched sketchbooks. 1 is too small and the paper is horrible quality.. its like really bad parchment paper I think? My biggest sketchbook I just keep forgetting about and its like 6 years old. The others are from family as gifts I just haven't gotten around to
I’m glad I’m not the only one that does this. I have 6 different sketchbooks right now, and two of them don’t even have drawings in them yet, sigh. I need to work on sketching more often.
Every single Christmas, I get 5 sketchbooks from each relative. I appreciate their gifts, but this has been going on for 4 years.
Lol
I use to have a bunch of unused sketchbooks but I promosed myself not to buy anymore until I use them out. Now I only have 2 more sketchbooks to go before I can buy a new one. Who knew that would be a motivation for me to actually finish my sketchbooks 🤣
I have waaaaaay too many empty/unused, half-empty sketchbooks. I’m on a strict no buy until I reduce the amount that are empty. Those etchr sketchbooks are calling to me but I’m staying strong!!
13:41 it's convenient that the page was too overexposed to even see the list of video ideas lol
As I'm spring cleaning while watching this video, I'm tempted to just unearth my old sketchbooks from my bookshelves. Lately I've been receiving sketchbooks as gifts, and I've made it a point to not draw in them unless one of my current ones have been filled out.
(80-90% of it, at least.)
The one you didn't know the maker of, is hahnemühle, the same as the small sketch & notes from your friends.
Ah yes, i wondered if it was that one but I can't even begin to try to pronnounce it haha.
I have so many empty sketchbooks because I get so excited about finding sketchbooks on sale and stuff and i just hoard them, but i decided to use it as a motivation to live (sounds odd maybe but when ur depressed ya gotta find something) basically i tell myself i have to keep living until they’re all totally full which will take me forever becayse I have around 30 and i recently got into book binding so the collection is growing and people get me them as gifts a lot etc. etc. idk if this is weird but it kinda helps me
I have about 50ish and i also bought loose sheets and rolls of paper as well. I went a little crazy last year with buying art supplies lol. So i have a shit tonne that i haven't used. Its one of my goals this year to use them all. I just always feel bad to ruin them. Im already working towards that goal tho so good luck to anyone else who's trying to do that too😊👍
I'm so proud of you. This is what I am going through. Best thing about quarantine is o have Stopped buying.
I have a ton of new sketchbooks and got 4 lot of Pentalic Traveler 6 x 8s for $20. A great deal!
I think every artist is or at least has been at one point a sketchbook hoarder. These were really neat to see!
I have 18 which is a lot more than I thought! But some of them are unfinished from years ago, and I have a few that are watercolor paper, but I mostly sketch now and rarely paint so I don't think I'll get to them any time soon.. I'd like to get some more unique sketchbooks in the future! Some decorated ones, or really personalise them
I don't have so many empty sketchbooks, but I have lots of empty notebooks and I can't use them for school because they want the ones with the rings.... : / i'm also really happy because I stated this year sketching every day and so far I can see the results, yay!!!!
I also have a ton of sketchbooks, but I use them for writing 😬 a lot of them are waiting to be filled this year!
How many years have you been in art school?
2 and a half!
A lot of the unused paper/sketchbooks I have aren't really sketchbooks. Like I have a bunch of watercolor paper, but I use them as individual sheets and not a collection. Then, I have a black paper one and a tan toned one which I use as craft paper almost. I also have two pads of bristol paper. I only have 2 sketchbooks I use as sketchbooks that are unfilled. One I just started and the other is just for Inktober. But I do feel a little called out because I had planned on ordering more illo sketchbooks tomorrow. 😂
I also did wrangle all my sketchbooks and I could have sworn I had filled at least two sketchbooks but lo I didn't fill any. I'm going to change that this year. I just can't say no to a nice sketchbook
I only have 2 actual sketchbooks but a lot of mediums like multimedia paper and black paper plus a Canson artist board book.
can relate too well😂️😂️
11:47 ayy, that's Hahnemühle! I recognize that rooster hehe. Also: I don't really have empty sketchbooks, I have a main one I'm currently on and a small one with paper that I hate, that aren't yet finished :p really happy with my main one tho, it's a Hahnemühle Nostalgie sketchbook, smooth and pretty thick paper :D
I currently have 14 empty sketchbooks and I'm hoping to finish most of them this year since I try to fill in at least 3 pages a day and most of them only have about 40 pages :)
