Day 172: Building an eco-friendly wall with recycled bottles

- On day 172 of our off-grid journey, we focus on community and teamwork! We were joined by Sean and Rachel from @B2GOG who lent their hands and expertise. Sean helped resolve our solar system issue, ensuring we have reliable power again. Rachel and Sean also helped us prep for our next big project: a bottle wall! Watch as we show the slow but steady progress on cutting the bottles using alcohol and string and begin assembling the wall. Though this video isn’t a step-by-step tutorial, it highlights the importance of collaboration in building our homestead dreams. Most of the process is captured in time-lapse, giving you a glimpse of what it's really like to work on this project!

This bottle wall came to fruition becuase we wanted to allow natural light in but we didn't want to have to buy windows... So, this is our compromise. hahaha

Sometimes we may get things wrong, but we're choosing to enjoy the journey. Our kids are homeschooled, so they are accustomed to getting roped into projects. hahaha We believe it is important for them to learn skills, so they are often in the middle of our projects (even though we don't always show them on the videos).
If you put those whiskey bottles and beer bottles in hot boiling water the stickers will pull off pretty easy everything looks great I love the wall and of course you guys
Thank you, this is a great suggestion. Others have suggested that we use a blow dryer, but we don't even own a blow dryer. hahaha we can make hot water though.

Put some oil in the boiling water and put your bottles in it for a while then take a knife and scrape the sticker off add more oil to your sticker if its hard to come off. Good luck👍👍👍

The labels come off real easy if you run a hair dryer over the label. Also doesn't leave any sticky stuff.

Have you considered that the trees sway in the wind? That small amount of flexing could damage the clay and bottle structure.
You make a good point Eunice. We topped one of the trees and plan to top the other one soon. Then, they'll just be big posts. They won't sway as they will be tied into the roof when we build it.

If you add a little heat to the bottle, it helps losen the glue to peel the labels

The bottle wall will be really cool. You may need more mud between the bottles. Going to look sweet at night and letting sunlight in. ❤
Thank you Melissa. I think it will look super cool too. I will add more mud as I go. My plan is to add a little at a time to allow it to dry faster... IDK if this is the right way to do it or not.. hahaha but we're trying it.
@@OurMountainHome316 Tiny Shiny Homes you tube has done alot of bottle in their build. They are using Hyperadobe bags . They are building a roundhouse now but have built chicken/garden, solar shed bedroom, cute dome building in Arizona. Check them out.

Are the trees live that would be my only worry as they grow they might crack the wall as they grow. Such a great idea for the wall cannot wait to see it lite up
The trees were alive when we started... but they aren't' anymore. hahaha now they're just big posts. We still have to top one of them. But we are waiting till we can define the roofline first. That way we don't cut it too short or too long.
I suggested the hot boiling water but make sure you put it inside the bottle the bottle heats up and the sticker pills off

Unfortunately, Lilee still bunks with Wiley and I. Her room is still full of all of the food we brought from Oklahoma. It will be nice when we can get all of that out of her room and she can officially move into it.

Could you put coloured dye in the bottles to get different colours without too much cost.
Yes, I considered doing this... But my main concern is that the paint would begin to peel on the inside of the bottle after they bake in the sun for a couple of years. I would never be able to get it out. So, I decided to stick to the basic colors I was able to find.
Hey Jenn what would happen if you mixed a little mortar in each bucket of mud. Would it strengthen the wall.
Honestly, I am not sure what would happen. I imagine it might help strengthen it but the mud we make is mostly clay and it dries REALLY hard. Like a terracotta pot. We would literally need to use a pressure washer and a lot of free time to get this mud off. If we have issues with cracking or erosion, we will just add more mud.

Wiley has mostly switched to vaping. It is much cheaper and a step in the right direction to quit completely.

Soak bottles in water then they will come off
We tried that and it made some of the labels harder to remove. 🤦♀️ The easiest labels to remove were the bud light ones because they're like plastic stickers. The paper labels were a pain in the butt. hahaha
