For the record, regardless of whether you consider yourself a "reviewer" or "analyst" in name or not, I think you have deeper insights into the episodes and show as a whole, and present those insights in a far more original and entertaining way, than pretty much any of the other pretenders to the horseshoe throne. That's why I watch these videos, because I can find analytical value in them that stimulates my brain in all the right ways. Story time (you can ignore this part if you want): I remember when I was new to the fandom, during season 4, and I was enamored with the whole analysis/review subcommunity. I must have been subscribed to at least two dozen different people all presenting their own takes on every new episode. I know that I was watching at least three videos every week the day the new episodes aired, and many other people who never continued past one or two videos. Then I was introduced to the Horseshoe King himself, Jesse Wood. I was continually baffled by his videos, mostly because his assertive and seemingly self-destructive personality was so far from my own that the personality itself was a turn-off for me (but also because of the self-referencing he would do that always went over my head). But I kept coming back, because his commentary was insightful enough to catch in my mind and stay there like a wet piece of candy. And I saw. I saw evolution. I saw experimentation. I saw growth and development. I saw a character arc so carefully planned out and seeded, and then executed, that it put masters of the art to shame. It was in the fallout of all that I realized that he had disillusioned me to the the whole subcommunity of reviewers and analysts. Without fully realizing what had happened yet, I couldn't go back anymore. As time went on, I thought there just weren't any good analysts/reviewers any more. But then, one day, I tried one of those compilation posts of reviewers posted on EQD, and I realized: not only had what Jesse preached in his exit come true, it had stayed true for two years. There was no good new analysis of the show because nobody tried to be good. Everyone seemed so convinced that being a special snowflake meant to have a recognizable character and use their brand of humor, and do nothing else. Even the one person I'm vaguely aware of trying to do something with the format isn't really breaking any boundaries so much as he's just using the same formula to tell two stories at once. The analysis subcommunity isn't dead, it's just stagnant, but it's been stagnant since Jesse left the scene two years ago. But then, you come along. You, with seemingly no ties to the little reviewer cliques that have formed or any wish to be a part of them. You, with the believable, possibly exaggerated character of yourself as the narrator taking us through mini-adventures with no pretense of copying the sea of cut-and-paste which you've been lumped into. You finally show some of what Jesse was preaching so long ago. That going over episodes can be fun. That it can be deep without trying to sound intellectual. That it can be different. Honestly, I consider you extremely mature for all that. I salute you, my good sir.
That's why he's a great reviewer: Because he's not taking himself or the actual episode plot seriously, he can appreciate the underlying morals of the episodes that most people can't. In the case of Fame and Misfortune, he'd be the person who'd laugh at the Mane 6 for their stupid crap, but still come out of the other side understanding more than he did going in.

I think the reason Discord is still a dick is because he hasn't lost everything like Sunset and Starlight have due to their actions. The only time something similar happened to him was in Keep Calm And Flutter On, but it was a pretty minor thing compared to the other two. Basically, Discord has never hit rock bottom and given how he was reformed in a mostly artificial way (he only really gave a shit about changing at one point), I doubt he'll get his own revelation. Maybe if they showed more of his backstory we could eventually discover if he has lost something important that could be used to bite him in the ass in the future.
Lol lol Trixie's gotten a lot better since meeting Starlight. She's still kind of a jerk, but she knows to cut the shit when it's needed. Discord on the other hand is still causing conflict for the sake of causing conflict. I get that he's the spirit of chaos, but if all he does is do shitty things then he's not exactly a good guy yet. He doesn't have to change his personality entirely, but he NEEDS TO STOP CAUSING SHIT FOR NO REASON. That said, I think recent episodes like the Season 6 finale and "Discordant Harmony" have helped his character a lot, showing that he can go through an episode without just causing trouble for everyone else.
4:38 "Discord is a lonely, insecure man-child who thinks he's the smartest guy in the room..." This line made me realize how similar Discord would be to Zephyr Breeze if he didn't have those crazy reality-warping powers. Although I haven't thought about it much, I think the reason Discord hasn't been redeemed like other villains is because he'd be too OP to have firmly on the heroes' side (which is why the writers had him joining Tirek). No other threat to Equestria would ever feel compelling if the main cast was friends with an all-powerful immortal. Btw, is this video going to replace the usual episode recap video? I was really looking forward to seeing what you would do with an episode revolving around D&D.
It's my headcanon that if Discord goes too nice and orderly he'll either power down or die. I don't think he's ready to settle for either of those options. He is the _spirit of chaos_. There are some inherent requirements of dickery in that existential title.
Hmm. You know what, I like that idea, too. Rather, I'd be kinda okay with that idea. I think it'd be cooler for Discord to have to walk the line between friend and progenitor of chaos. That would give the ponies some character development, too. They have to balance their desire for peace with the life of (usually) a friend.
Tbh, I don't think that's fair. Discord is very egotistical BECAUSE he literally has God tier powers. Without em he'd he'd probably be a lot different. Although in general it's hard to say, because his abilities are such a core part of his character that who knows what he'd be like without them.
The thing with Discord is that he's not sorry for what he did as an evil guy. That's why he doesn't apologize or want to apologize. So I wouldn't really call him reformed. He's just neutral. And I don't have a problem with that. Only good and bad characters could be boring I think.
He have to heavily disagree, as Discord seems absolutely broken by what he did by finding himself on the other end of the stick, and even kind of saves the day afterwords. I also don’t think he manipulates people, per say, he more accurately just has a unique way of helping them. There’s PLENTY of evidence that he and the main characters are legitimate friends. I won’t deny that he’s still kind of a trickster, as I previously mentioned, and has something of an ego, but he’s done plenty of good deeds. Anyone who still doesn’t understand me can go rewatch the ending of Twilight’s Kingdom.

Completely agree the only thing he seems to regret is betraying the mane 6 and Equestria for Tirek which i think the only reason he does is because Tirek betrayed him!
I think Discord is just a perfect example of both Chaotic Neutral or Chaotic Good, he's not evil anymore but he's also not afraid to fuck up your day just for fun. I think that's why a lot of people like him now, he's reformed but he still lives by his natural believes.

He actually does break the record as the oldest manchild in existance. I used to think they looked cute together, and it seems like even some of the creators are aboard that ship, but now I feel like Fluttershy needs to friendzone his ass, hardcore.
Hmm. That's right. He actually contributed to something for once, and that's a step up, but I'd like to see him be the one to impart some wisdom too. He's a millenia old for crying out loud, how can he not have dropped any pearls or said anything interesting yet? Still, I liked his dynamic with Trixie. We haven't seen that type of friend relationship on the show yet, the one with a lot of fake bitching and berating each other for fun.
And I think he got better again in Discordant Harmony. Usually he trolls anyone who isn't Fluttershy in every episode he's in. There were plenty of trolling options he could have chose while out shopping, but he actually managed to act like an adult. As for getting snippy with the shop ponies, someone else's weird relationship is none of their dam business.
To be fair, he was only released as a means to an end. Remember, Celestia only wanted him to use his powers for her ends 'by his own free will.' He was never on the path to reformation, only a mild probation and community service. No one really cares for him as an individual except for Fluttershy, again see Celestia's words above for reference. All anyone cared about was his powers. It's no surprise he's not used to caring about others, then. Also, it's implied he never went mad with power so much as he draws power from madness (which is how actual chaos magic is supposed to work, btw.) If he were to be fully reformed, if he did start showing and feeling remorse, it'd physically harm him or at least weaken him. We've also seen that happen on the show, or something close to it, not sure about the timing in relation to this video, though.
While you bring up a lot of good points, the only real problem is that Discord isn't an easy character to write for, when he's not causing mischief. Discord is the walking definition of over powered. The man could literally snap his fingers, and destroy Equestria anytime he wants. Hell, he's probably the only character in mlp that can kick Superman's ass. The reality is that it would be hard to construct a challenge for Discord to overcome that would make him the hero like Sunset, in the equestria girls movies, because he's over powered. any obstacle that would present a huge challenge for sunset to over come, discord could easily solve it with a snap of his fingers because there doesn't seem to be any limits to his powers. Therein lies the rub, which is why he's not an easy character to write for. In fact, i would even argue that he's even harder to write for than Apple Jack herself.
With that in mind it makes sense that he has such an inflated view of himself and "thinks he's the puppet master pulling all the strings" when in reality beyond his powers he's quite pathetic as a person. I think rather than a physical challenge it would have to be something more, like his relationship with fluttershy. But as of this comment its nearly the end of the show, so its competely out of the question. But interesting to think about.

Despite all his power, all his strength, he wouldn't be able to do anything unless he made an actual attempt at self-improvement. Though I think that would be just as hard to write.

I might not agree so much on the Shimmy/Glimmy points as I think their turnarounds from being massively destructive villains was a little quick (not the redemptions, just the change in attitude), but Discord really has no place learning friendship lessons in this world of magical talking marshmallow horses. Either he's an unpredictable antagonist or he's massively whipped (and as you say a spoilt, attention seeking narcissist), and the latter just isn't as interesting. Good analysis, and a fun video :)
The reason I love Discord so much is because it reminds me of myself. I too am a controlling sociopath and I'm trying to change my ways, and seeing Discord do his gimicks and fail remind me of what I was and that I still have a long ways to go. If I, for whatever reason, arrived on Equestria it would be my top priority to make friends with him (and try to marry Twilight, but that's not important right now).
This is probably late, and I haven’t really seen past season 8 yet (though I’m aware of what he does), I think looking at discord as a character like glimmer isn’t really right. in discordant harmony, it’s shown that when he removes himself from his state of disharmony, he begins to cease to exist. It’s not really something he can remove, and I think his more complicated approaches to get something (like threes a crowd) isn’t him being an asshole, but a disconnected god who wanted to rest insecurities that were bothering him, clearly a lot considering he went out of his way to do so. Also I think he looks up to celestial and how she manages twilight’s studies, and how intricately laid (yet unplanned) plots can lead to a grand moral that makes the mane 6 happy, and he’s tried to create that for them multiple times because they’ve clearly got something huge out of the unplanned ones celestia sends them on. Which is what he does in season 9, he’s someone who can’t really act as a moral support verbally, yet his too infatuated with his own power to help on a small scale, I don’t think his intentions aren’t meant to be cruel, especially after twilight’s kingdom, just something that if it were to happen to himself, then he could overcome it easily so it seems more cruel then it is (and a little dash of chaos probably doesn’t help those scenarios). It’s also hard to grasp his age, even through he’s 1000+, he was petrified for a majority, beyond this his past prior to petrification is unknown, so you could make inference that he’s fairly young, relative to tirek (this ties back to glimmer), so he hasn’t had much time to mature within them, and his first emotionally active friend is flutter shy, so he’s going to have trouble with the emotional responsibilities. For a character who relies on the opposite of what each and every character attempts to maintain to survive, and has a level of emotional disconnect due to age and lack of maturity, I think he does do his best to be a goo friend, he’s just not particularly good at it since he’s trying to make himself multiple people at once when doing it, rather then simply being himself and acting as a more scaled down level of support. Perhaps my opinion will change when I finish, but I’m aware of his reasonings in releasing the villains (an attempt to boost twilight’s confidence when she’s already been given a huge responsibility, that he doesn’t grasp)
You say you're not good at this kind of thing. But man, you gotta give yourself more credit! This was actually pretty good! It wasn't just random rambling. You stated what you thought and backed it up effectively. You brought up some pretty good points, and props to you for not being pretentious about it. And of course, just being outright funny while doing this. See, I analyze stuff like this all the time around friends and family (Not just MLP, but TV shows and movies in general. Since I wanna work in the animation industry I always study what works and what doesn't work in these things) and I plan on doing that here online, among many other things. Interesting. But honestly, exactly because we already have sunset and starlight as fully reformed villains that now act as heros, discord is more interesting. He would lose a lot of appeal to me if he turned the same way as these two have. Discord has always been the msot unique character in the show, so he should continue to walk his own path and preserve his uniqueness.
Especially since he kinda represents unagreeable uniqueness in a sense. That and the direct opposite of harmony, the thing that the protagonists represent altogether, disharmony. That they manage to be kind to their direct opposite highlights their capability yet his nature is unchangeable, thus also unredeemable, really. I think it's valid to not like his character but he is an incredible character.
I actually like that Discord doesn't have any remorse for what he has done (except the Tyrek accident, maybe) He is just whipped by Fluttershy. It's good to see how a person that doesn't feel himself obligated for any redemption maintains his shitty personality and learns bit by bit about how to make and interact with friends.
I actually like discord and i'd write more about why, but i'm kinda busy with watching all your episodes right now. In short - i think discords represents antisocial personality disorder aka psycho/sociopathy very well and i really relate to him. I have little empathy for others but i still wanna have friends and don't feel lonely, so i just need to find situations in which i can bring the best out of me, instead of the worst. Sometimes it's a lot easier and a lot more possible to change what you do instead of who you are. There's a lot of villains in this show who all had different reason why they become villains and i don't think discord is able to redeem himself (well, he kinda did in the season finale, but it was ... eh) because of his inherently wrong personality traits. It's more important for him to learn to not hurt others than to not be an asshole. Well, that's my opinion, at least.
I think that Discord is a lot like Apollo in The Trials of Apollo series. Both are godlike beings(one actually is a god) with big egos. Apollo was turned mortal for the series and his response was similar to Discord's when he was unable to use his powers against Chrysalis. I don't expect Discord to ever be fully good, he is the spirit of chaos and in season 7 it reveals that if he isn't chaotic then he will no longer exist. He will always cause mischief but I think that friendship has had an affect on him.
The biggest difference I see between Dissy and Shimmy/Glimmy is regret. Discord is not ashamed at all that he used to be a villain like Luna is. So long as his current actions do not hurt his friendships, he just flat out does not care how others feel. So yeah, you hit the nail on the head. Discord is an @sshole.
In my mind, Discord being a literal chaos deity, disharmony personified, is an excuse that no human has, but a reasonable excuse nonetheless. Being chaotic is his job.
Dwk, part of the problem is that we still don't know what Discord's lowest point is. Hell, we don't even know anything about him at all. It's possible that his behavior is his way of coping with something.

Discord was the magical macguffin that they never used for anything good. So much power, so much potential, but completely skipped over every time there’s a crisis.
I think of Discord as a little boy in a grown man's body. He might be eons old, but he's done nothing with that time except play games with ponies' minds and go to stone-prison, so he hasn't achieved any maturity. I don't know if you ever watched 3rd Rock from the Sun, but my parents were really into it. The character he reminds me of most is Dick Solomon: he only appears to be a grown up, but inside he's just discovering this world and he's feeling everything for the first time. He went nuts over Fluttershy having a new friend or the guys making fun of him like a little boy would, because he's seriously never had to deal with those feelings before and he doesn't know how. Yeah, he's an asshole, no argument there. But all kids are assholes because they don't know how to be anything else yet.
And here we are. With a two-parter before the series finale available for viewing and Discord has squandered any and all chance he had left to redeem himself. He will forever be the asshole that nobody but Fluttershy trusts and wants to be around.

I was still enjoying Dischord until the series finally when he basically brought three major enemies together and did nothing to really fix it. That when I had enough.
discord turns out as a bad redeemed villain because he keeps on fucking shit up in filler episodes just to create a conflict. i think that a good redemption arc for him would be him trying to come out of his shell and accept that he doesn’t need to be an asshole to be “cool.” there have been a couple episodes where he’s really tried, and i think that some episodes where he’s used as a plot device could have been a lot better if discord just realised he shouldn’t be doing that shit to people who care about him and want to connect, instead of the other characters just dealing with it. there’s a lot of potential for him becoming better without ruining it all again, but i feel like writers are taking advantage of his chaotic and wack behaviour to create sub-par episodes to reach the 26 mark. think of it like dnd alignments. discord at one time was chaotic evil, and he was a great villain. at this point in the show he’s being shoved between chaotic neutral and evil, while trying to work his way towards chaotic good. it can be done but the writers keep strangling him with the exception of a few times, most of which get ruined
Based off your analysis of Discord here, he sounds like he is stuck in a rut. Like he has been around so long, being chaos, that he has come out the other side and is just... there, he does it because it’s expected with no innovation or growth. He’s also probably bored as fuck with life but just hides it behind a mask.
Most characters in the series have both positive and negative qualities to balance them out and make them interesting and reletable. Discord however is not like that. All of his traits i can think of is just negative. What good does he have? Having tea with Fluttershy? For fuck's sake even the Terrible Trio showed more positives in one season than Discord did in the entire series!
Most antiheroes are meant to have more negatives than positives. Discords positives are his creativity, bravery, willing to do anything to help his friends especially fluttershy and twilight and ultimately wanting to be a better person despite his flaws and being a spirit of chaos and disharmony. In terms of relatable its hard changing who u were originally.

Anyone who has experienced it such as myself knows how hard it is first hand to become a better person. He tries to help twilight in his own chaotic way. Antiheroes are morally questionable/very flawed characters that aren't good or evil, a common trait of all antiheroes is being well intentioned but going about it in a moral way that defers from the norm.
I wholly agree! However, I think that's the point of Discord. He's an arrogant control freak without any power anymore. Nevertheless, his character is important because he represents the type of arrogant, control freak personality. He is a tool. A tool for showing how that sort of personality has its flaws and incompatibilities with societies and friends. We need Discord, even if we might not like him all the time.
DWK you do realize Discord will never actually change right? I mean it is not like he has the option of doing so, he is the avatar of chaos and , last I checked, chaos is neutral at best, disruptive at worst so any characterization of Discords has to take that in consideration, he can't, literally, make an effort to better himself because he is the manifastation of a concept and, unless that concept changes, he will just be what he is..
My thing is; it was understandable and tolerable that he Had to learn to be a good guy for the first few episodes.... But after FIVE FUCKING SEASONS OF REFORMATION, the writers need to stop doing the same episode over and over again and just FINALLY make him a good guy. Come on, he's been going through these motions for over HALF of the shows entire runtime.

This guy is better than Drowning, way better. But I also hope this praise won't go to his head, as it may have done with Drowning. Drowning would deny it went to his head, but I think it did, he just tried to respond in the reverse way .... This guy is also DIFFERENT than Drowning, keep that in mind.
This is why DWK is so good. He remmembers that this is a fucking cartoon for little girls. Nothing against the big ‘analysts’ of the community, but there is just something off about treating the show like Tolkiens lost work.

Huh. Well thought-out, well presented, and well argued. However, the thing is that Discord never really accepted that what he did was wrong (except for the whole Tirek debacle.) He's not going to redeem himself until he thinks there's a reason to seek redemption. Granted, that does nothing to address your issues with him. In any case, this was genuinely enjoyable and thought-provoking. By no means do I expect you to do it again.
Also Discord does kinda evolve. three's a crowd didn't develop crap, but the finale of season 4 had him learn he can't just have his way and keep friends. season 5 he learned others can have friends besides him and had him actually teach twilight a lesson even if he got back bitten. Even here he learned he too can actually have friends outside the mane six (though all this assumes you ignore comic canon where he has regular lovers and befriended Luna years ago)

Narrator007 it wasn't on discord, it was on Fluttershy. The issue was basically a Doctor Who parody complete with Discord taking Fluttershy and the CMC in a police box to time travel. So it was more mocking how in the new doctor series he seems to get women to always fall for him even when he never intends it. You should pick it up if they do another humble bundle since it was a dollar for the first 2 years worth of the comics. (though to be honest a friend of mine in south america saids he always pirates them until the last few months since they barely update it on time so I scan him my copies)
The only real reason I like Discord is mainly due to being able to tell that the animators have a fucking blast animating him doing random stupid shit. Also I like John's voice.

I like the concept of Discord not being redeemed or even fully reformed, what I'm not a fan of is how this is portrayed. I love writing true neutral/chaotic neutral deity characters, but they are tricky. I think the thing with him is that he should be a bit less of a trickster/asshat and a bit more of a force of nature. He is basically the god of chaos, not the god of ruining someone's day. His main focus should be creating chaos, and that doesn't have to be a bad thing. He could just end up making someone's day more interesting, but not terrible. He can help people out, but in the weirdest way possible. I'm working on my own Discord-like character, and he's more of a sarcastic guy who likes to watch events unfold and only helps when he feels like it. He causes trouble sometimes, though his mischief is more like a tornado and everyone just needs to get out of the way. He also sometimes does help people sometimes, he's just a bit indirect about it, finding ways to get them to figure things out themselves while pushing them in the right direction, like those mentor characters whose lessons you don't understand until they've been learned. He's unpredictable, AKA chaotic. He does what he wants whenever he wants, and his only constant is his personality. I find that to be a fun idea for what Discord could be like. In his episodes, the writers could also explore his psychology a bit, like in Discordient Harmony (how do you even spell that?). There are many directions they could take him, from existential dread, to loneliness, to the fact that he has god-like powers and therefore a complex god-like mindset, to his chaotic nature, to why he does what he does. His character arc could also revolve around this and maybe him trying to figure out how to connect with others. IDK, I just find him conceptually interesting and full of potential.
Actually they can't. That was only with the elemets of harmony. They had the power to do that but they put it into the tree of harmony and if you say that that chest thing that changed their manes could then I highly doubt it.
Glim Glam and Bacon Hair (love the both of them) have both proven their valor in their reformations. (They're also both incredibly similar in my opinion -> Name Scheme, Role, Reformation, etc). Discord on the other hand went from being an eccentric villain to a troll, bully, and jerk. In my opinion, he has some of the worst episodes in the series, especially "What About Discord." (And if he picks on Twilight one more time, so help me...!)
Nice sum up of why we love Sunset Shimmer, why everyone hasn't gotten on the Starlight express yet (hasn't had her big moment yet), and why we should all hate Discord. If I could give 10 thumbs up I would.
I always saw these videos as slide-show abridgments, not analysis. Anyway totally agree on pretty much all points on Discord. They had a great recurring villain to work with and they turned him into that jackass down the street that everyone hates but can't get to move away. Really wish he'd full-relapsed or sacrificed himself like alt-world Sombra did and took in all Tirek's evil to get a decent antagonist back.
Discord is a troll who helps the mares in this own chaotic twisted way. E.g. when he read the mares' diary and pointed them to their special lessons. I know he's an asshole, but partially it's the mares' fault that he succeeds, e.g. when he makes Twilight think of sending Starlight away. Twi could've just been honest and told him "No, Discord, I haven't thought of something special yet, and since when are you an expert on friendship students anyway?", but since she's so insecure she got herself into trouble. That's Discord's way of teaching lessons. Maybe the main reason why he can't just make amends (aside from being a Being of Chaos) is because he is ancient. He needs more time to learn. If you grew up being the most powerful being in the universe and literally nobody could stop you, who would be able to raise you safely through puberty? But all in all you did a good job analyzing the shit out of these guys and I respect that you have a partially different opinion than me.

For the record, regardless of whether you consider yourself a "reviewer" or "analyst" in name or not, I think you have deeper insights into the episodes and show as a whole, and present those insights in a far more original and entertaining way, than pretty much any of the other pretenders to the horseshoe throne. That's why I watch these videos, because I can find analytical value in them that stimulates my brain in all the right ways.
Story time (you can ignore this part if you want):
I remember when I was new to the fandom, during season 4, and I was enamored with the whole analysis/review subcommunity. I must have been subscribed to at least two dozen different people all presenting their own takes on every new episode. I know that I was watching at least three videos every week the day the new episodes aired, and many other people who never continued past one or two videos. Then I was introduced to the Horseshoe King himself, Jesse Wood. I was continually baffled by his videos, mostly because his assertive and seemingly self-destructive personality was so far from my own that the personality itself was a turn-off for me (but also because of the self-referencing he would do that always went over my head). But I kept coming back, because his commentary was insightful enough to catch in my mind and stay there like a wet piece of candy. And I saw. I saw evolution. I saw experimentation. I saw growth and development. I saw a character arc so carefully planned out and seeded, and then executed, that it put masters of the art to shame. It was in the fallout of all that I realized that he had disillusioned me to the the whole subcommunity of reviewers and analysts. Without fully realizing what had happened yet, I couldn't go back anymore. As time went on, I thought there just weren't any good analysts/reviewers any more. But then, one day, I tried one of those compilation posts of reviewers posted on EQD, and I realized: not only had what Jesse preached in his exit come true, it had stayed true for two years. There was no good new analysis of the show because nobody tried to be good. Everyone seemed so convinced that being a special snowflake meant to have a recognizable character and use their brand of humor, and do nothing else. Even the one person I'm vaguely aware of trying to do something with the format isn't really breaking any boundaries so much as he's just using the same formula to tell two stories at once. The analysis subcommunity isn't dead, it's just stagnant, but it's been stagnant since Jesse left the scene two years ago. But then, you come along. You, with seemingly no ties to the little reviewer cliques that have formed or any wish to be a part of them. You, with the believable, possibly exaggerated character of yourself as the narrator taking us through mini-adventures with no pretense of copying the sea of cut-and-paste which you've been lumped into. You finally show some of what Jesse was preaching so long ago. That going over episodes can be fun. That it can be deep without trying to sound intellectual. That it can be different.
Honestly, I consider you extremely mature for all that. I salute you, my good sir.
That's why he's a great reviewer: Because he's not taking himself or the actual episode plot seriously, he can appreciate the underlying morals of the episodes that most people can't. In the case of Fame and Misfortune, he'd be the person who'd laugh at the Mane 6 for their stupid crap, but still come out of the other side understanding more than he did going in.

I think the reason Discord is still a dick is because he hasn't lost everything like Sunset and Starlight have due to their actions. The only time something similar happened to him was in Keep Calm And Flutter On, but it was a pretty minor thing compared to the other two.
Basically, Discord has never hit rock bottom and given how he was reformed in a mostly artificial way (he only really gave a shit about changing at one point), I doubt he'll get his own revelation.
Maybe if they showed more of his backstory we could eventually discover if he has lost something important that could be used to bite him in the ass in the future.
Lol lol Trixie's gotten a lot better since meeting Starlight. She's still kind of a jerk, but she knows to cut the shit when it's needed.
Discord on the other hand is still causing conflict for the sake of causing conflict. I get that he's the spirit of chaos, but if all he does is do shitty things then he's not exactly a good guy yet. He doesn't have to change his personality entirely, but he NEEDS TO STOP CAUSING SHIT FOR NO REASON.
That said, I think recent episodes like the Season 6 finale and "Discordant Harmony" have helped his character a lot, showing that he can go through an episode without just causing trouble for everyone else.

This line made me realize how similar Discord would be to Zephyr Breeze if he didn't have those crazy reality-warping powers.
Although I haven't thought about it much, I think the reason Discord hasn't been redeemed like other villains is because he'd be too OP to have firmly on the heroes' side (which is why the writers had him joining Tirek). No other threat to Equestria would ever feel compelling if the main cast was friends with an all-powerful immortal.

It's my headcanon that if Discord goes too nice and orderly he'll either power down or die. I don't think he's ready to settle for either of those options. He is the _spirit of chaos_. There are some inherent requirements of dickery in that existential title.

Discord is actually one of my favorite characters, but I will happily admit, you've got a point.
The thing with Discord is that he's not sorry for what he did as an evil guy. That's why he doesn't apologize or want to apologize. So I wouldn't really call him reformed. He's just neutral. And I don't have a problem with that. Only good and bad characters could be boring I think.
Pretty much, he is chaos after all, and chaos can be nuetral, good, or bad.
He have to heavily disagree, as Discord seems absolutely broken by what he did by finding himself on the other end of the stick, and even kind of saves the day afterwords.
I also don’t think he manipulates people, per say, he more accurately just has a unique way of helping them. There’s PLENTY of evidence that he and the main characters are legitimate friends.
I won’t deny that he’s still kind of a trickster, as I previously mentioned, and has something of an ego, but he’s done plenty of good deeds.

I think Discord is just a perfect example of both Chaotic Neutral or Chaotic Good, he's not evil anymore but he's also not afraid to fuck up your day just for fun. I think that's why a lot of people like him now, he's reformed but he still lives by his natural believes.

And I think he got better again in Discordant Harmony. Usually he trolls anyone who isn't Fluttershy in every episode he's in. There were plenty of trolling options he could have chose while out shopping, but he actually managed to act like an adult. As for getting snippy with the shop ponies, someone else's weird relationship is none of their dam business.
To be fair, he was only released as a means to an end. Remember, Celestia only wanted him to use his powers for her ends 'by his own free will.'
He was never on the path to reformation, only a mild probation and community service. No one really cares for him as an individual except for Fluttershy, again see Celestia's words above for reference. All anyone cared about was his powers. It's no surprise he's not used to caring about others, then. Also, it's implied he never went mad with power so much as he draws power from madness (which is how actual chaos magic is supposed to work, btw.) If he were to be fully reformed, if he did start showing and feeling remorse, it'd physically harm him or at least weaken him. We've also seen that happen on the show, or something close to it, not sure about the timing in relation to this video, though.
While you bring up a lot of good points, the only real problem is that Discord isn't an easy character to write for, when he's not causing mischief. Discord is the walking definition of over powered. The man could literally snap his fingers, and destroy Equestria anytime he wants. Hell, he's probably the only character in mlp that can kick Superman's ass.
The reality is that it would be hard to construct a challenge for Discord to overcome that would make him the hero like Sunset, in the equestria girls movies, because he's over powered. any obstacle that would present a huge challenge for sunset to over come, discord could easily solve it with a snap of his fingers because there doesn't seem to be any limits to his powers. Therein lies the rub, which is why he's not an easy character to write for. In fact, i would even argue that he's even harder to write for than Apple Jack herself.
With that in mind it makes sense that he has such an inflated view of himself and "thinks he's the puppet master pulling all the strings" when in reality beyond his powers he's quite pathetic as a person. I think rather than a physical challenge it would have to be something more, like his relationship with fluttershy.
But as of this comment its nearly the end of the show, so its competely out of the question. But interesting to think about.

I might not agree so much on the Shimmy/Glimmy points as I think their turnarounds from being massively destructive villains was a little quick (not the redemptions, just the change in attitude), but Discord really has no place learning friendship lessons in this world of magical talking marshmallow horses. Either he's an unpredictable antagonist or he's massively whipped (and as you say a spoilt, attention seeking narcissist), and the latter just isn't as interesting.

The reason I love Discord so much is because it reminds me of myself. I too am a controlling sociopath and I'm trying to change my ways, and seeing Discord do his gimicks and fail remind me of what I was and that I still have a long ways to go.
If I, for whatever reason, arrived on Equestria it would be my top priority to make friends with him (and try to marry Twilight, but that's not important right now).

This is probably late, and I haven’t really seen past season 8 yet (though I’m aware of what he does), I think looking at discord as a character like glimmer isn’t really right. in discordant harmony, it’s shown that when he removes himself from his state of disharmony, he begins to cease to exist. It’s not really something he can remove, and I think his more complicated approaches to get something (like threes a crowd) isn’t him being an asshole, but a disconnected god who wanted to rest insecurities that were bothering him, clearly a lot considering he went out of his way to do so. Also I think he looks up to celestial and how she manages twilight’s studies, and how intricately laid (yet unplanned) plots can lead to a grand moral that makes the mane 6 happy, and he’s tried to create that for them multiple times because they’ve clearly got something huge out of the unplanned ones celestia sends them on. Which is what he does in season 9, he’s someone who can’t really act as a moral support verbally, yet his too infatuated with his own power to help on a small scale, I don’t think his intentions aren’t meant to be cruel, especially after twilight’s kingdom, just something that if it were to happen to himself, then he could overcome it easily so it seems more cruel then it is (and a little dash of chaos probably doesn’t help those scenarios). It’s also hard to grasp his age, even through he’s 1000+, he was petrified for a majority, beyond this his past prior to petrification is unknown, so you could make inference that he’s fairly young, relative to tirek (this ties back to glimmer), so he hasn’t had much time to mature within them, and his first emotionally active friend is flutter shy, so he’s going to have trouble with the emotional responsibilities. For a character who relies on the opposite of what each and every character attempts to maintain to survive, and has a level of emotional disconnect due to age and lack of maturity, I think he does do his best to be a goo friend, he’s just not particularly good at it since he’s trying to make himself multiple people at once when doing it, rather then simply being himself and acting as a more scaled down level of support. Perhaps my opinion will change when I finish, but I’m aware of his reasonings in releasing the villains (an attempt to boost twilight’s confidence when she’s already been given a huge responsibility, that he doesn’t grasp)

You stated what you thought and backed it up effectively. You brought up some pretty good points, and props to you for not being pretentious about it. Interesting. But honestly, exactly because we already have sunset and starlight as fully reformed villains that now act as heros, discord is more interesting. He would lose a lot of appeal to me if he turned the same way as these two have. Discord has always been the msot unique character in the show, so he should continue to walk his own path and preserve his uniqueness.
Especially since he kinda represents unagreeable uniqueness in a sense. That and the direct opposite of harmony, the thing that the protagonists represent altogether, disharmony. That they manage to be kind to their direct opposite highlights their capability yet his nature is unchangeable, thus also unredeemable, really. I think it's valid to not like his character but he is an incredible character.
Discord motivation for reformation is basically:

I actually like that Discord doesn't have any remorse for what he has done (except the Tyrek accident, maybe) He is just whipped by Fluttershy. It's good to see how a person that doesn't feel himself obligated for any redemption maintains his shitty personality and learns bit by bit about how to make and interact with friends.
I actually like discord and i'd write more about why, but i'm kinda busy with watching all your episodes right now. In short - i think discords represents antisocial personality disorder aka psycho/sociopathy very well and i really relate to him. I have little empathy for others but i still wanna have friends and don't feel lonely, so i just need to find situations in which i can bring the best out of me, instead of the worst. Sometimes it's a lot easier and a lot more possible to change what you do instead of who you are. There's a lot of villains in this show who all had different reason why they become villains and i don't think discord is able to redeem himself (well, he kinda did in the season finale, but it was ... eh) because of his inherently wrong personality traits. It's more important for him to learn to not hurt others than to not be an asshole.

I think that Discord is a lot like Apollo in The Trials of Apollo series. Both are godlike beings(one actually is a god) with big egos. Apollo was turned mortal for the series and his response was similar to Discord's when he was unable to use his powers against Chrysalis. I don't expect Discord to ever be fully good, he is the spirit of chaos and in season 7 it reveals that if he isn't chaotic then he will no longer exist. He will always cause mischief but I think that friendship has had an affect on him.
The biggest difference I see between Dissy and Shimmy/Glimmy is regret. Discord is not ashamed at all that he used to be a villain like Luna is. So long as his current actions do not hurt his friendships, he just flat out does not care how others feel. So yeah, you hit the nail on the head. Discord is an @sshole.
In my mind, Discord being a literal chaos deity, disharmony personified, is an excuse that no human has, but a reasonable excuse nonetheless. Being chaotic is his job.

He might be eons old, but he's done nothing with that time except play games with ponies' minds and go to stone-prison, so he hasn't achieved any maturity. I don't know if you ever watched 3rd Rock from the Sun, but my parents were really into it. The character he reminds me of most is Dick Solomon: he only appears to be a grown up, but inside he's just discovering this world and he's feeling everything for the first time. He went nuts over Fluttershy having a new friend or the guys making fun of him like a little boy would, because he's seriously never had to deal with those feelings before and he doesn't know how. Yeah, he's an asshole, no argument there. But all kids are assholes because they don't know how to be anything else yet.

discord turns out as a bad redeemed villain because he keeps on fucking shit up in filler episodes just to create a conflict. i think that a good redemption arc for him would be him trying to come out of his shell and accept that he doesn’t need to be an asshole to be “cool.” there have been a couple episodes where he’s really tried, and i think that some episodes where he’s used as a plot device could have been a lot better if discord just realised he shouldn’t be doing that shit to people who care about him and want to connect, instead of the other characters just dealing with it. there’s a lot of potential for him becoming better without ruining it all again, but i feel like writers are taking advantage of his chaotic and wack behaviour to create sub-par episodes to reach the 26 mark. think of it like dnd alignments. discord at one time was chaotic evil, and he was a great villain. at this point in the show he’s being shoved between chaotic neutral and evil, while trying to work his way towards chaotic good. it can be done but the writers keep strangling him with the exception of a few times, most of which get ruined

Based off your analysis of Discord here, he sounds like he is stuck in a rut. Like he has been around so long, being chaos, that he has come out the other side and is just... there, he does it because it’s expected with no innovation or growth. He’s also probably bored as fuck with life but just hides it behind a mask.
Most characters in the series have both positive and negative qualities to balance them out and make them interesting and reletable.
Discord however is not like that. All of his traits i can think of is just negative. What good does he have? Having tea with Fluttershy? For fuck's sake even the Terrible Trio showed more positives in one season than Discord did in the entire series!
Most antiheroes are meant to have more negatives than positives. Discords positives are his creativity, bravery, willing to do anything to help his friends especially fluttershy and twilight and ultimately wanting to be a better person despite his flaws and being a spirit of chaos and disharmony. In terms of relatable its hard changing who u were originally.

I mean it is not like he has the option of doing so, he is the avatar of chaos and , last I checked, chaos is neutral at best, disruptive at worst so any characterization of Discords has to take that in consideration, he can't, literally, make an effort to better himself because he is the manifastation of a concept and, unless that concept changes, he will just be what he is..
My thing is; it was understandable and tolerable that he Had to learn to be a good guy for the first few episodes.... But after FIVE FUCKING SEASONS OF REFORMATION, the writers need to stop doing the same episode over and over again and just FINALLY make him a good guy. Come on, he's been going through these motions for over HALF of the shows entire runtime.
Honestly the show writers needed to show Discord ring more kind. But nope. They fucked it up!

This guy is better than Drowning, way better. But I also hope this praise won't go to his head, as it may have done with Drowning. Drowning would deny it went to his head, but I think it did, he just tried to respond in the reverse way .... This guy is also DIFFERENT than Drowning, keep that in mind.
Wonder how he feels now that Discord did some marginally unselfish things in the finale. I'll have to rewatch that episode to see if he mentions it.

Which I guess is still a step up, but at this point I kind of wonder why the Mane 6 even consider him a friend. I mean, the one time he treats them with kindness and respect, it turned out to be a ploy to manipulate Twilight. Beyond that he’s been nothing but a massive jerk to them.

However, the thing is that Discord never really accepted that what he did was wrong (except for the whole Tirek debacle.) He's not going to redeem himself until he thinks there's a reason to seek redemption. Granted, that does nothing to address your issues with him.
In any case, this was genuinely enjoyable and thought-provoking. By no means do I expect you to do it again.

Also Discord does kinda evolve. three's a crowd didn't develop crap, but the finale of season 4 had him learn he can't just have his way and keep friends. season 5 he learned others can have friends besides him and had him actually teach twilight a lesson even if he got back bitten.
Even here he learned he too can actually have friends outside the mane six (though all this assumes you ignore comic canon where he has regular lovers and befriended Luna years ago)

it wasn't on discord, it was on Fluttershy. The issue was basically a Doctor Who parody complete with Discord taking Fluttershy and the CMC in a police box to time travel. So it was more mocking how in the new doctor series he seems to get women to always fall for him even when he never intends it.
You should pick it up if they do another humble bundle since it was a dollar for the first 2 years worth of the comics. (though to be honest a friend of mine in south america saids he always pirates them until the last few months since they barely update it on time so I scan him my copies)

Huh, never could figure out why I felt like Discord was lacking the same "Hell yeah!" feelings I had for Starlight and Sunset. Now it makes sense. I think the closest we got was in the Tirek finale? And I expected him to be less of a jerk after that but...it didn't happen. Finally, something that explains this enigmatic disappointment I feel towards him!

I like the concept of Discord not being redeemed or even fully reformed, what I'm not a fan of is how this is portrayed. I love writing true neutral/chaotic neutral deity characters, but they are tricky. I think the thing with him is that he should be a bit less of a trickster/asshat and a bit more of a force of nature. He is basically the god of chaos, not the god of ruining someone's day. His main focus should be creating chaos, and that doesn't have to be a bad thing. He could just end up making someone's day more interesting, but not terrible. He can help people out, but in the weirdest way possible.
I'm working on my own Discord-like character, and he's more of a sarcastic guy who likes to watch events unfold and only helps when he feels like it. He causes trouble sometimes, though his mischief is more like a tornado and everyone just needs to get out of the way. He also sometimes does help people sometimes, he's just a bit indirect about it, finding ways to get them to figure things out themselves while pushing them in the right direction, like those mentor characters whose lessons you don't understand until they've been learned. He's unpredictable, AKA chaotic. He does what he wants whenever he wants, and his only constant is his personality. I find that to be a fun idea for what Discord could be like.
In his episodes, the writers could also explore his psychology a bit, like in Discordient Harmony (how do you even spell that?). There are many directions they could take him, from existential dread, to loneliness, to the fact that he has god-like powers and therefore a complex god-like mindset, to his chaotic nature, to why he does what he does. His character arc could also revolve around this and maybe him trying to figure out how to connect with others.
IDK, I just find him conceptually interesting and full of potential.

Actually they can't. That was only with the elemets of harmony. They had the power to do that but they put it into the tree of harmony and if you say that that chest thing that changed their manes could then I highly doubt it.
Glim Glam and Bacon Hair (love the both of them) have both proven their valor in their reformations. (They're also both incredibly similar in my opinion -> Name Scheme, Role, Reformation, etc).
Discord on the other hand went from being an eccentric villain to a troll, bully, and jerk. In my opinion, he has some of the worst episodes in the series, especially "What About Discord." (And if he picks on Twilight one more time, so help me...!)

Anyway totally agree on pretty much all points on Discord. They had a great recurring villain to work with and they turned him into that jackass down the street that everyone hates but can't get to move away.
Really wish he'd full-relapsed or sacrificed himself like alt-world Sombra did and took in all Tirek's evil to get a decent antagonist back.
The problem with Discord is that he's the literal definition of it. Try to change that and and it will go against his nature.

Discord is a troll who helps the mares in this own chaotic twisted way. E.g. when he read the mares' diary and pointed them to their special lessons.
I know he's an asshole, but partially it's the mares' fault that he succeeds, e.g. when he makes Twilight think of sending Starlight away. Twi could've just been honest and told him "No, Discord, I haven't thought of something special yet, and since when are you an expert on friendship students anyway?", but since she's so insecure she got herself into trouble. That's Discord's way of teaching lessons.
Maybe the main reason why he can't just make amends (aside from being a Being of Chaos) is because he is ancient. He needs more time to learn. If you grew up being the most powerful being in the universe and literally nobody could stop you, who would be able to raise you safely through puberty?
But all in all you did a good job analyzing the shit out of these guys and I respect that you have a partially different opinion than me.
