- This is the follow up video for the 3 shower feeds in which we had a ze of 451 ohms. We tested out the Linian Earth Rod Pro Kit with mixed results and had to resort back to good old fashioned brute strength.

Looks hard work mate, I normally just use a 10/12mm 1 metre SDS drill bit and then knock the rod in.
It's advised to go no more than 600mm up to external wall... Footings.
A mains powered SDS would probably be the right job for that
I can core drill a 4” hole no problem with that drill so was surprised it would work with the linian driver. I did get my mains sds out and that still struggled 😳🤦♂️

We use a mains powered jackhammer. Works wel with 1" rod till at around 5 meters (5x1m) deep

Earth disk might have been better buried slightly shallower and reading below 20 ohms better than your outcome.

It's advised 600mm from external wall for this reason, he's about 100mm 🤣🤣
I fitted two 1200mm Earth rods for the first time recently after I carried out an EICR on a domestic property that had a TN-S supply & the Ze was something like 21.7! Your video helped me so thank you. Only thing still a bit unsure of is the 100mA RCD. Is it recommended to fit one? If so would you fit it before the tails go into the consumer unit? If that makes sense. Thanks
Thank god for the good Earth in Denmark. We use TT alot, and always get around 10-30 Ohm at Ze with only a 2 meter rod.🥳🇩🇰
the latest job, which is still being filmed, I installed a rod and it was less than 20 ohms.

Agree that a resistance below 100 ohms is something to aim for and preferably attain.
Always aim to get 100 or less but on that job I wasn’t going to try put in another rod 🤣🤣
100 ohms....wow here in the US we aim for 25ohms for a single rod and often below that - with a second rod - on my home I managed to get it down to 2.8 ohms on a hot dry day.

I thought it was 25 ohms? Or is that in other countries? I’m in the uk but I am only in my 2nd year apprenticeship, just trying to learn 👍🏻
Not an expert so excuse the silly question. Could you not have just drilled into the ground with a 1 size down sds bit pilot hole and hammerd the rod through that way.
Thanks for sharing, a quick question when you put in multiple rods, are you just driving them on top of each other?
Using 5/8" rods you can couple up and drive multiple rods on top of each other. I tend to do 2 rods at 1200mm each so this becomes 2400mm and normally get a decent enough reading. If there is a rod already in place then i will put in a new rod as above and then connect the new rods to the existing rod. if you have to put multiple rods in for one property and they are not coupled together then you place the rods the same distance apart as they are buried. In this video I didn't know how deep the first rod went in, so assumed it it would be no more than 2400mm down so placed the new rods 3000mm away to be safe and drove them down 2400mm.
spend some decent money on a retaining box as well to keep plants off growing over your vital ground connection
your max Zs of final circuits protected by 30mA earth fault protection can be 1667ohms but the Ze of the earth electrode should be no more than 200ohms

yes as per the regs it can be 1667 however it then goes on to state that anything above 200 is considered unstable.

I’m looking to get solar, battery storage, ev car chargers, have I have a couple of sheds/ garages. my earthing looks like a TNCS or TNS arrangement… it seems far safer get my own TT earthing set up in place and not use the DNO’s. Any reason why I couldn’t/wouldn’t want to change?

A pilot bit would have solved that problem.
Happy Gilmore that’s the whole point of the linian earth bit, no pilot hole required as they turn the rod into a drill bit.
@@GiffordsElectrical craig the aim of the game is not to struggle a pilot bit would have prevented that you still could have used the linian bit after using the pilot bit, job takes less time,

Do you have to do this when the earth from the mains is no good??... as you can tell I know very litttle about this whole subject!!
What size main earth do you use if I’m clipping it the same as you no mechanical protection?

Did you disconnect the old rod or link both new and old together ?
linked both rods.
Drill bit worked but I couldn't remove the SDS bit from the rod, so I had to abandon it and use the traditional method.
5 minutes with a club hammer would have it sorted then time for a few cups of tea.
I’d go a bit further away from the building the footing will be close
Can’t see that linian bid adds anything to the rod at all.
Maybe a comparison is in order timed with sds and linian as opposed to no linian and a club hammer. 👍

Ze=160, Zs=150 why is Ze greater than Zs? I thought Zs was Ze+ resistance on shower circuit.
Zs will take in to consideration all the parallel earth paths within the installation.
Can I ask a question please buddy… I’ve built a spray booth at home with a 20” explosion proof fan, I’m just connecting in to an extension lead, simply plugged in as it came with a plug pre-wired.. The fan it’s self has an earth screw connection… My question - would it be OTT installing an earth rod like this just for the fan or is there no need? Or is there an easier way? I’m not an electrician obviously! Thank you for any response at all!
Put a little water down around where the rod goes in the ground, thank me later.
There is no way any electricity would earth through this rod. The gas pipe and water copper pipe will be bounded to the earth and the chances of any short or lightning strike would getting to this rod is zero. Not a chance. Dirt is not a good condicter but the miles of water in the copper pipe is. You better look at the bonding as that is a worry.
