Hi jack , just a bit of advice mate , A lot of sparks make the same mistake with outside earth rods, The outside earth rod needs a bigger and better sealed box cover to stop corrosion at terminals, this is where most faults happen , the original box and new one fitted are to small with poor seals, keep your chin up regarding work it has been slow start but it is starting to pick up 😃😃👍👍

I have the Linian SDS+ driver attachment too, plus the one use drill bit screw on that goes on the end of the rod if it's rocky, brilliant kit and as you say makes it easier.👍👍👍

I gotta get one of those. Here in 'the states' there are a lot of Al rods with no threading. Around here, they come in 6' lengths and I grind/file a point on the end.
You kids in the UK (EU?) have some pretty interesting kit.
I would personally put the earth cable in flexi conduit then a wiska box on the outside wall, just to protect the cable

We’re just up the road in Coventry mate and it’s the quietest I’ve ever been since I set up in 2019. Hoping as the end of tax year approaches work picks up again 🤞🏼

8:14 quick question here, but it looks silver under there, are those solid copper rods or copper clad steel rods? Might just be the camera angle here. Here in the USA we are required for a minimum of two 8' rods that have to be 6' apart. You can get by with one if reading is less than 25 ohms, but most just put two in. Also the wire can not be cut between rods and has to be continuous. We also use #6 (16mm2) but solid, typically bare and not stranded to prevent corrosion between the strands on the copper wire over time. There are some guys around that like stranded because its easier to run.
We also use UFER grounds on newer construction that is bonded to the rebar in the foundation and creates a grounding plane under the entire house in addition to the rods, and potentially any copper water lines, however with many new homes plumbed in PEX and their water meters to the house using POLY, there is nothing to ground to there.

TLC and Screwfix sell a bolt that has the same thread as the earth rod. You put the earth rod - earth rod connector on and screw in the bolt. I bought an inch? socket from a car boot sale and an SDS to socket adapter from eBay to do what your Linian one does. I didn’t know it existed. That’s why your vids are educational! Noice 😊

Great job, nice to see people using dedicated tools etc. If I had to criticise the obvious would be the so called earth box, I'd just the weather proof ground box and like the other guy said put some form of conduit with a bend dug in to prevent water egress into said earthbox. That being said I understand on an emergency you have to deal with what you have. My second point would be that pointless crimping tool, while ideal for doing car audio crimps it doesn't give enough crushing power to those solid lugs, SWA do a reasonably priced kit with every lug and hole size you'll need as we only now use metal clad consumer units its worth having, the kit comes with a crimp tool that looks like a set of bolt croppers and has 10x the force of those little crimps. In essence you'll get a far better reading on your Ze if it has a more solid connection. But still great video 👍🏼
All fair points sir Thankyou for your comment, I agree about crimpers but the ratety I use them it doesn’t warrant buying expensive ones, these ones do a tight crimp so will do for me.

We use the conductive compound that we use when fitting large cable lugs to help with wet corrosion on the rod connector .🤔

Hey Jack, thanks for another video. So sorry to hear your work has been down, but hopefully the quotes come through ok. Earth rods are the normal thing here in Aus as we use the Multiple Earth Neutral (MEN) system. I gather this is called PME in the UK. The neutral and earth blocks in the consumer unit are strapped together. It is typical here for the supply authority meter etc to be in the same cabinet as the fuseboard. The neutral lines are also earthed at supply and transmission poles. I know I've simplified the description, but...
Hello sir Jim, yeah it sounds the same as PME most properties here are either PME or TNS where the earth is strapped onto the outer of the incomming cable, most TT is gone now as they are earthing the neutral at the pilon where they can and upgrading them

Just had a scary experience where the box on the utility pole energised the lead on my supply cable which energised my earth rod, water pipes and all metal in my home! Got electric shock! Box replaced and my cable to boundary. Box was one hundred years old!
Did that really just happen 😮
@@JRCElectrical Last week and the next day two supervisors and electricians arrived and told me the lineman who repaired the box and cable left me with a live neutral (whatever that means?). They said he was bad and shook their heads. I'm now terrified to touch anything even though it's been fixed.

@@loriAlessiroberts118 so the live power has gone down the wrong cable into the property, all the switches switch off the live, so with it going down the neutral there’s a chance of shock
8 FEET! 😮 I worked with a spark on a site that ManWeb insisted on the spark installing a 1m earth rod. The location they wanted it was inside the building. After 2 hours of hammering away with a lump hammer, the rod had only gone in 13 inches. Must have hit the foundations and not gone any further.
That’s not so good 😂😂 I’ve heard some right horror stories in the past, lucky this one wasn’t too bad
BG gas engineer's have a socket and see that just gives a range, below 1 above 1 but the white goods engineers have a Megger MF1720 and enough knowledge to make an assessment of the eli based in the earthing arrangement.

Would defo use the larger earth inspection pits if using outside, i did one on friday but managed to get it under the hall in a void and luckily got 21.5ohm it was to supliment a TNS that was a bit high, Thing i need to get one of these sds adaptors so i can stop using a hammer
Hammer is a nightmare isn’t it 😂 and then the rod gets smashed up on the end 😬 Jesus that was a high reading if even with a rod it was 21.5ohm
If we get high readings on tns or cs we report it to western power and they come and sort it

😂😂😂 that drill was given to me by Bosch to be fair you can apply to test there tools and they sent that a couple years ago it’s a beast
More expensive, but the Condudisc may be an option in some locations, especially industrial.

I have only been required to install only a handful of earth rods over the years as not as common in my area. if only the that sd adapter was around then it would have made the job so much easier especially in clay ground.

Just a tad o waste on longer runs sticking 16mm in. Also, a tip use your R2 lead to test the rod resistance before u botherwith clamp at the top. Speeds it up if u need more rods.

I check the pilons whenever I get a job like this and they have labelled the ones that have been upgraded

I believe British Gas engineers are issued with the Socket and See PDL234 plus part P loop testing kit

@@JRCElectrical I had a very bad experience with a smart meter fixer last year , he spent an hour trying to undo a union in the wrong direction, then forgot to put the dummy in the cut out while working on it I had to shout at him before he got a whack , was scary he had no Idea

But how do you check for underground water mains pipes or other electrical mains cables etc before installing a rod?

Normaly you can see roughly where they would be from the location of the gas meter, stop tap and mains in building.
If you weren’t confident tho you can get a scanner or pay for a scan of the area to tell you exactly where the services are

Yes be aware of everything 😂
Just note where the underground services would be, you can get a scan of the area if you pay or have a scanner or you can look at the plans to property which should show you where services are (gas, water, electric and drains)

Best reading I've had is 9 ohms on a single 4-ft rod.... Admittedly that was at a marina so the ground was saturated in water
And yes work is slow for us too... Cost of living is killing domestic work

Nice job with the new rod install 👍👍. Old rods do deteriorate over time, the copper coating disappears just leaving a steel surface that rusts, unless you go for the luxury of a 100% copper rod. We have had complete substations loose their earth reference before now. Hope you get back to winning quotes soon buddy.

Some countries on the continent have been requiring stainless rods for quite a few years to avoid corrosion issues. Before that it was galvanised and that can rot quite badly.
It’s been a while, so my limited knowledge might be a bit rusty…

It could have if they have updated it, there doing a lot around here and changing it to tncs but with no sign on the cut out I don’t like to just connect into the neutral 😬

@@JRCElectrical try bedrock. Where I live in my garden there are parts with limestone very close to the surface. There certainly isn't 8 feet of soil above it.

@@JRCElectrical Fortunately built in the 1990s so TN-C-S. No ground rods for me, or at least there won't be until the DNOs change their rules and require supplemental grounding on TN-C-S systems as well, something already required in a lot of countries.

I'm curious what the UK requirements are? In the US are code dictates that you can use one earthride but it needs to be tested and if you do 2 it's automatically accepted. Either way the ground wire needs to be continuous from the panel ( < we'll go that to simplify things) down to the electrode and through the other rod with no break. Is it is it common to use more than one ground rod or uncommon? If I were in that situation and getting such a bad ground I probably would've doubled up the old one if it was still reasonably good.
In the UK we need to get the earth reading under 200 ohms and I’ve known people to put rods all over the place to get it under,

You can buy an attatchment for the end of the rod that turns it into a drill bit to be fair and it smashed through anything, £20 bit that gets burried with the rod tho

Don't know what type of soil you have down there? Maybe the acid in the soil had eaten through the copper and down to the steel,making it rusty under ground. stopping a reading

The second test is still somewhat incorrect. You have not proved the cable ohm are within spec
I mentioned it in the video, recommended max ze for TT is 200 ohms, if everything is rcd protected the max is 1667 ohms or something around that 👍

You would never ever get an earth rod into the sub soil here. It’s crushed volcanic rock, due to the last ice age. In fact it’s not a subject that ever comes up here. Main earth is to incoming water supply.

@@JRCElectrical it's actually more common in the UK than you think with lead pipes. Normally comes to light when the pipes are replaced with plastic.
Houses built on rock strata the option is to go for a bolted earth mat

What I didn't see from the start was using a fly lead was to check çomtinuity of the earth cable end to end!
This had already been checked sir, the job was booked in after a first call out where I checked these things
