Thanks for this very complete and interesting video, as usual.
I have some objections based on my own experience:
- In my opinión, in the case of stage hoses, the advantage is exactly the opposite because rubber hoses, being less flexible and having much more resistance to deformation, offer a greater tension in the cord that joins both ends so that the pressure gauge remains in the same reading position, making it much more difficult for it to fall.
- Regarding the roughness of the surface of the “Flex” hoses when has started to deteriorate causing friction on the neck, I would point out that friction (and neck irritation if a hood is not used) ALWAYS occurs, even when the hose is quite new.
- Finally, I have missed the main disadvantage of the rubber hose: it has much lower surface resistance when it is bent a lot, in such a way that in certain routes (for example, the output of the backup regulator hose from a first Apeks DST stage ), the probability of sudden breakage is much higher, being able to produce one of the most dangerous situations that can occur, as you well know.
I hope these remarks contribute to the purpose of the video.

I am a C1 Diver now and changed all my "cool" blue Miflex hoses back to rubber for Long Hose and Backup and HP hose but i also use the newer kind XT Tech for drysuit and inflator hoses as they have fixed routes when I dive and the kevlar looks great! ;)
Stage hose is rubber for regulator and Miflex for HP Hose. I think on the Stage the HP Miflex hose really makes sense. I also tried Smooth Pro, which are similar to Miflex only with a smooth surface BUT they are also floating. Anyway I also would recommend rubber in general! ;)
Lots of great points! I switched to a flex hose when going long from a rec setup. I wanted less mouth strain both in tension and weight. It's possible that a rubber long hose would not induce as much spring tension but I've only used a rubber long hose on borrowed gear in Italy so not enough testing. My other hoses including secondary are still rubber but I'll need to keep all your good points in mind especially to kinking.
I'd love to hear your insights on the XT hoses and whether they have solved enough of the disadvantages from your perspective?
I experienced a kink on a miflex hose whilst doing an S-drill on a cave course. The gas flow just stopped.
I use rubber hoses for regulators every time now and miflex on SPG for stage cylinders works best
I maintain using Miflex hoses when I’m diving in sidemount configuration, the flexibility of the braided hose makes the long hose deployment & stowage a lot more easier & manageable. When I’m diving back mount, I used to dive with the Miflex Tec XT hose and I hated it and I changed to use the traditional rubber hose instead. The outer coating of the XT hose is “sticky” and stiff, and it has “memory” to keep shapes, once you have deformed it and it is very difficult to reset it. It is tougher and can withstand abuse better than the rubber hose, for sure. But the rubber hose is still better in comfort and handling.
Great Vid. I think it depends what for you need the hose. I used to have a Miflex as Longhose and switched back to rubber, because everytime jumping of the boat the hose jumped over my head. On the other side a rubber-hose on a JJ-setup with BOV always pushes the BOV to the side so you are struggling to keep the loop in your mouth. Miflex makes your live much easier here. And of course I love the Miflex HP-hoses.
yeas, exactly my point I always try to make in those videos (sometimes less, sometimes more successfully) - allowing divers to make educated (informed) decisions and being aware of the consequences of such decisions. As my favorite answer is "it depends" which is not dodging the answer but making people think about "why's" certain things are done in certain ways...

To my knowledge the problems with the flexible hoses has been fixed. I was unaware of the cutting air supply off issue. Thanks for the information.
I had switched to the flexible hoses for the weight savings and flexibility. But, with the expectation they would not last as long as the rubber hoses.
I prefer miflex (especially for my stages/deco) as I have a blue hose for my EAN50 and a green hose for my Oxygen, it make it easier to identify the deco bottle
12:20 the wing bending the hose should not happen, I don;t see this as a fault of the miflex but a poor assembly. Also, a good advantage of miflex is that they are more resistant to bent especially near the first stage. If, as you said, the wing was making such high pressure on the miflex hose at the extent to stop the gas, a rubber hose could have been damage seriously at the connection point with the metal bolt if it was used instead
I primarily use Flex hoses , but replace them often due to not being able to inspect the actual hose portions.
Modern MiFlex are great but I've stayed with rubber for my long hose so it doesn't float off from round my neck. Even with MiFlex I always respect the basic properties and never over-bend them or keep/store them bent on a tight radius.
It sounds like what is needed for the flex hoses is a rope wraps that are softer and cover the hose to prevent fraying of the flex hoses. A climbing rope wrap is designed to prevent the climbing rope from fraying and getting rubbed on rocks and surfaces.
I use rubber hoses on my SM , but have miflex braided hoses on my bk mount .. after diving both I have to say im more of a fan of the rubber hose and will prob swap out my bk mount long hose to rubber , for the fact that I find the miflex hose a bit to floaty and not a grippy when tucked ... there is now a tec hose that miflex makes which is rubber ? I use this also on my SM , tho it dose kink ..
The reason why i haven't done any GUE courses is because off the very high cost and fees. It seems that in EU everything that is Technical related in scuba world cost you big money. Yes i want to learn how to dive safe, but not willing to pay the GUE 1000 euro price. My experience with Myflex hoses is that they float and cut true your suit. The rubber one not.

So you're saying stiff rubber hoses aren't suited to GUE configuration?
I would also put more emphasis on the fact that rubber hoses are a lot more fragile on the metal connection bolt as they don't bent well (especially on short length, for example when the hose ends towards the first stage and has a big bending in the last few cm).
For storing and carrying (as no one has infinite space to store), the risk of damaging a rubber hose by bending it too much is much higher that for miflex.
Miflex has cons as you mentioned but I think you were a bit biased in favor of rubber hoses here
Being biased is the point though, isn't it? In her experience, rubber hoses are more predictable, more comfortable, and less prone to kinking.
Miflex has the GUE-recommended hose lengths if you decide to use it.
With the rubber hose, if you flex it and you notice there are small breaks in the hose, you will know its time to replace them. I don't know about Miflex
Personally, I would prefer a hybrid setup, rubber hoses for my primary and backup and Miflex for SPG and stage.
Wear a Rash guard to protect your wetsuit from abrasions.

What kind of diver routes their flexible hoses between a backplate so as to crimp it so much the gas flow is compromised 😆😆😆

What about a colored sleeve to slide over the rubber hose? The advantage of colored hose is the ability to identify where that hose goes.
Was a good video 👍 however there is a lot more to ‘hose technology’
of course, there is... and I really try hard not to go that "rabbit hole" in those videos. But maybe it is worth creating more in-depth tutorials about gear, as for sure many would be interested - so... "anatomy of a dive gear" series :))

Interesting Video, and THANK YOU for sharing. A few comments are below. I do make some pointed criticisms, but of course, they are opinions only, subject to change, meant with kindness, etc. etc.
- I'm sure many of us appreciate the historical context around flexible hose problems during their introduction many years ago (re: flaking inside the hose). However, I think bringing this up in virtually every discussion (without providing any evidence) over the last decade needlessly creates a culture of fear around the hoses; If there is evidence to justify the concern, then fine, but let's present it. GUE recommendations are held in high regard, so it follows then, that the open discussions GUE facilitates here on youtube should incorporate high standards in terms of evidence rather than hyperbole, speculation, or one-off anecdotes. Are there any recent reports of near misses or accidents from these hoses? When was the last recall? What does the manufacturer have to say about it? This all should be part of the open discussion of the merits of these hoses.
- Without breaking apart the hoses, say cutting them lengthwise on a band-saw, I think we limit our understanding of how both types of hoses are really built. The physical evidence matters here.
- What about some real "stress" tests on these hoses? Take a bunch of hoses of different types and manufacturers, run them through a battery of stress testing, log failures, and then cut them open and look for weaknesses. Simply put, evaluating the merits, risks, and appropriate use-cases for ANY type of should be informed on empirical measurement, not "feel".
Divers picked up bad habit by bending SPG hoses on stages.
Could you elaborate?
