  • Much interest has been created by the arrival of the new King C Gillette line of shaving products from the Gillette Corporation, today I undertake my own, independent review of the much heralded new safety razor (double edged) offering in the line.
    To facilitate an enjoyable shave away from the pleasantries of my bathroom, I have constructed a rudimentary 'outdoor shaving station' from left-over timber which allows me to enjoy the great outdoors as I take my shaves in the changing elements of the seasons.
    Join me on my endeavour to enjoy a relaxing shave with a safety razor, bathed in the brilliant sunlight and warming heat of a spring-time afternoon.

    The shaft is made in China, the head is German and the blades are Russian, Great International cooperation. We need more stuff like this.

    It bodes well for wet shaving in general, if Gillette have taken the time and trouble to create a new double edge razor. The popularly of this traditional process is making a resurgence.

      Its a great razor for the price and I use it very regularly. Well worth adding to the collection.

    I really enjoyed that. As for me I've always enjoyed double edged razor shaving and straight razor shaving both of these are great fun to use and I get smooth shaves from both of them however I occasionally and reluctantly if I'm in a hurry I do use cartridge razor and single edge disposable I don't like the way they fill on my skin my thick stubble clogs up the blade gaps causing irritation so obviously traditional straight razor and double edged razor shaving are the best of the best 👍

    The fact King Gillette invented the DE safety razor and that it's never truly gone out of date makes it a shame the company discontinued making them for several decades. Glade they saw the resurgence in the market and decided to dip back in. Would be interesting to see them do a fancier or adjustable one next.

    Nice review. My first DE razor was a Merkur HD 34C. I have since used many vintage and new production razors. My daily shaver at the moment is a Blackland Blackbird stainless razor. I find it to be very smooth and efficient. I typically use vintage Made in England Wilkinson blades. I did buy a pack of the blades mentioned in this video a couple months back and found them to be sharp and smooth, but I still prefer using blades from the golden era of DE blade production and in particular the Made in England Wilkinson blades.

      I really like Gillette Nacet blades these days with the King C razor, the Nacet is a keen blade, not quite as sharp as the Feather, but a great all rounder. Those Blackland razors are a thing of beauty - bit expensive for me though.

    The head looks identical to a Merkur closed comb. it feels good in the hand, with a nice heft. It is a mild gap, and as such when combined with their (also mild) blades, I personally find I can't get a really smooth shave with it - the temptation is to apply pressure but that risks cuts & rash. The razor itself would work better for me with Feather blades (very sharp), but I prefer a more open razor (Merkur futur on setting 4) to deal with my copper-wire-like bristles.
    I reckon it'd be a good "first" double edged razor for a teenager or millennial, or someone with finer facial hair. If it gets more people using longer lasting razors, with less waste (and more importantly less plastic waste) then good, although Gillette should rethink their advertising of late

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  3 роки тому +4

      There is talk that the head is in fact manufactured by Merkur and I would not be in the least surprised to discover that it is, the quality is to a high standard. The mildness of the shave is a plus point for many new shavers, although I personally now pair this razor with a Feathers or Gillette Nacet blade for the keeness required for a really close shave. For the price-point this is an almost unbeatable package and ideal for new starters. I use it most days now, due to the knowledge I can knock out a good shave in minutes with no concerns over any nicks.

    Very happy with my KC Gillette razor now after initial razor burn nightmare! Switched to ice cold water before and during shave instead of warm/hot, using very little pressure, and drying, then cleaning all parts (including the blade) with anti bacterial spray afterwards. £10 on sale on Amazon last week - bargain.

    A pleasure as always Ash,great review. The reviews on the Gillette page for this razor also seem very positive. I think with the Ian Fleming/Bond link to old Gillette models, if they were to produce the slim adjustable(?) or the old open comb 3 piece Fleming refers to, they'd make a killing so to speak. I have a recomendation for you too.... Just recieved a 10ml sample of Acqua Di Parma Colonia EDC concentree.... a rather lovely scent for the remainder of our summer. Give it a try, if you fancy.

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  4 роки тому +2

      Ah. Colonia, one of my all time favs. I've been a fan for while, I like the original, but I'm just coming to the end of another fragrance from the range - Colonia Intensa - it shares many of the characteristics of Colonia, but has a slightly richer fragrance. I love it.

    • @MisterBurtonshaw
      @MisterBurtonshaw 4 роки тому

      @@TheChapsGuide oh yes, the intensa is far better than the Essenza(?spelling?) If you like Colonia, but something richer and a bit heavier give it a go... My ladies say they do like it. There is a seller on evil bay doing samples of the Oud version ten quid for 10ml..

    I like the razor itself, but did not like the blade themselves. I thought the Vander Hagen blades I had bought at Walmart were better. I’ve now found quite a few amazing blades, but the King C Gillette blades really didn’t resonate with me.

    I guess the Gillette Co. took a leaf out of Wilkinson Sword’s success with the launch of their new chrome DE razor a couple of years back. I wonder if anyone has tried a side-by-side shave with both the Wilkinson Sword and this Gillette ‘King C’ and would tell us how they compare.

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  3 роки тому +2

      I have both razors and have to say that the Gillette is the superior model in my initial opinion - but - you have given me a great idea for a comparison video.

      The Chap's Guide - Wow, I’m astonished at the instantaneous response! Thanks very much for that. I am generally skeptical of Chinese-made products, but I did try the Wilkinson when it first came out (before I grew a full beard) and found it to be rather a decent shave. Based upon your review and comparanda, I must now definitely order the Gillette. Yes, please - a side-by-side video would be awesome! As always, you’re a true gent!

    Hi Ash, I have one of these razors and I must say I like it very much, just a quick question, how do you safely dispose of your used blades. Thank you and keep up the good work. Regards Keith.

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  Рік тому +1

      I dispose of mine in a old jam jar that I have cut a slot in the lid. It will hold about a thousand blades and I will dispose of it responsibly when it eventually becomes full.

      The Gillette is perfect for the beginner. It offers a very neutral (mild) shave and is very well made indeed for the cost. A great place to begin your DE shaving journey sir.

    I saw another review where it said the head was made in Germany maybe by muhle

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  4 роки тому +2

      I think that's unlikely at this price point, but I have to say, I have a Muhle and there is very little to choose between them for quality.

    the king c gilette is unbalanced in terms of weight, all the weight rests in the handle and the shaving is painful on the level of the fingers. it slips in hand when your hands are with soap and it is quite small in size. i much prefer the wilkinson sword. it is more manoeuvrable, does not slip thanks to its ridged handle and is easy to use. in short, wilkinson wins.

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  2 роки тому +2

      It's all subjective, I own both and think the WS safety razor is streets behind the Gillette. I find the head to be bulky and less maneuverable on the skin in comparison to the King C

      I've literally just had a shave with it and I must say I am still largely impressed. Its good to know that the head is of German construction, that should mean decent build quality if nothing else. Thanks for the info. Ash
