Yeah, i have a 2000 durango R/T 5.9L and my CV axel does not bolt on, mine slides in and out of the differential, and i see I'm not the only one with this different setup. If you can 1A Auto throw a video for us Dakota and Durango owners that have a different CV axcel setup because i can't find one video for my specific setup, I need to replace mine also. You guys have a lot of great videos and are very dependable! Help us different people out!
1999 Dakota SLT tip for those who have jacked it up pulled the tire, caliper, and brakes off already that will save you putting it all back on and dropping to the ground to get the axel nut loose. Put it in 4wd high then you can get the axel nut off then put it back in 2 wheel so you can rotate the axel to get the rear 6 bolts( mine were 9/16 not metric as 13 was too small and 14 was too loose and the axel nut I used a 1 1/4) I couldn’t really get under it to get the inner cv bolts off but as he did I could get them from the upper left so take one and then rotate the axel ( unless you’re using an impact wrench you will need to put it in 4wd take the bolt out then put it in 2wd and rotate it and repeat) thanks for the tip on turning the wheel inwards as I didn’t do that and had a hell of a time getting the old one out. Hope this helps
I have a 1988 Dodge Dakota. I was estimating two hours for to replace the first axle and one for the second. It required only half the amount of time. The outer and inner nuts are the same size for the 1988 Dakota as those mentioned in your video. Thank you for posting a very helpful and money saving video.
@crissy7503 You could try to lift the Jeep up and turn the wheel by hand to see if you can tell where the noise is coming from. If the axle is bent of bad you may see the tire hop up and down. Hope this helps you out.
Usually a bad axle will thump, check your inner and outer tie rods to see what type of shape they are in. If they're worn, it would cause a vibration in the steering wheel. Hope this helps you out.
It could be a control arm, sway bar link, or a bushing causing the clunk. Your best bet would be to get the front end up in the arm and check for anything rotted or a spot where something appears to be missing.
You might want to check the sway bar and the links as well as the control arm bushings. All of those items over time tend to wear away and need to be replaced.
How do you prevent binding and boot rubbing with a torsion lift ? Just replaced both upper control arms and both CV Axles on my 99 4x4 but i have severe rubbing vibration and the Inner CV seems to be binding or just at a very bad angle. I expected it to settle a little after install, but no. They did align it after and of course Firestone gives no mention of how the CV axles were sitting. I do have some rubbing on inner rim driver side it looks like as well.
Your videos are excellent and extremely helpful. Easily followed the directions to replace a hub assembly on a 99 Durango ...but unfortunately didn't replace the CV joint at the same time...and now back for that repair.
+Richard Mitchell Thank you for checking us out, and the compliments. The CV joint should be easier knowing what is in the way. Good luck with the repair, and let us know how you made out! 1aauto.com
I absolutely appreciate you guys! I buy lots of parts from 1aauto.com and am always using your videos when i work on something i have never worked on before. You guys are awesome!
This was a great video and it helped me change the passenger side axle in my '98 Dakota (4x4). The only comment I have is that at 4:46 in the video, the axle looks like it just pops out when sliding down. I struggled trying to remove the axle for a while because the lower control arm was in the way and the bolt flange closest to the engine would not clear the hub it was connected to. After putting the jack under the lower control arm and lifting it a little, the suspension geometry changed enough to slide the axle out the bottom like shown in the video. Thanks for the informative video!
+Robert Wiese I had the same problem on a 99 dakota. the only way i could get the axle out was to disconnect the upper ball joint. I tried for an hour before I finally gave up and disconnected the upper ball joint and then it was easy!
You make removing the axle look way easier than it is (after all bolts are removed). Been spending the past 2 hours just trying to get the CV to come out, there's not much room for play to push in then down =/ 99 dakota here
Great videos. Just did this and the hubs in a '99 Dakota SLT... Couple of comments: I could not get the axle out with the hub installed. Try as I might, I simply could not get the flange that the bolt goes through to clear the transfer case...ended up using a slide hammer to remove the hub, then the axle popped right out. Also, I have the skid plates under my truck. I remove the plate to get the driver's side axle out - looked tight, and I didn't want to mess with it... Great job on vids
If it's the cover that's leaking the dealer may have a seal for you, or they may recommend that you use RTV to seal the cover back to the differential. If there's an axle seal inside that's leaking, you may need ti go to the dealer for the part.
This video should cover from 98-03, not sure why your axles would be different on your vehicle. If there are axles in the front there has to be some type of nut that hold it into place.
from 2000+ they changed the steering to rack and pinion, and changed differentials ( I think it used to be a dana 35 but i'm not sure), and in the process they changed the cv from a flange style to a spline style. for those you match up the splines and then push them in while turning until the c ring locks in.
the 03 dakota 4x4 has a stub axle on the inner left and right which wear out over time . then u have to replace both half shafts and inner rt and left stub axles which pop out without taking gear box apart.keep in mind to replace lock pins on axle shafts
Good video and easy to follow. I am looking for the torque specs for the 3 hub bolts, the axle bolt, and the bolts for the brake housing. I Google search for the specs and I see different specs for all of the bolts. Where would I be able to find the correct torque specs? 2003 Dodge Durango 5.9L SXT
Guys, you've always given good info, but you need to check your model years; after 1999 both Dakota and Durango stopped using the wonderful bolt-on axles and went to the much hated slip-in that is a real scream to get out of the diff. I sure wish mine were bolt-on, but it isn't. Dodge kept that beautiful body style through 2003, but the 2000-2003 were way different inside. I know, I have a 2003 Durango, my boss has a 2003 Dakota, his son has a 1998 Dakota, and I have a friend with a 2001 Durango. They were different critters after 1999.
how can you tell , you need and axle , I just replace break rotors pads and wheel bearing hubs on my grand cherokee 4x4 1999 , there is a grinding noise , I thought it was the wheel bearing but after I replaced it is the same , cv boots look fine , the noise starts when the speed reaches 40 miles p/h,,,,,,,,,,,, by the way this video is excellent , well all the videos I have seen from 1aauto are great
another great video guys....I always look for you videos before anyone else...I have a 92 4x4 Dakota..is the process the same..i watched your video, and couldn't you leave all the brakes stuff alone and just pull out the axle like you did? sure would appreciate your input on my 92 Dakota...thanks again, jb
I have a 04 durango my truck is running hot only during the day ive replaced the thermostat, when my gauge rises to the h i cut on the heat, then the gauge begans to drop. what do you think the problem is?
Lol my 99 Durango does that when it's sitting in the line at a restaurant, changed my thermostat too! It's weird I tell ya but drove it from south Carolina to Arkansas straight with no problems of overheating 🤣
Check out their other videos Im sure they have one with that style axle. I just did my 04 Dakota and I unbolted the upper ball joint to let the hub/lower control arm lower down, then used a slide hammer to pop the cv axle off the stub shaft. I watched a lot of videos before hand but didnt find one that showed that exact process. Im assuming your 01 is likely the same as my 04.
My 2003 does not have those six bolts, there is no coupler....the axle goes right into the differential.....Im yanking on it but so far it is not moving. I am hoping there is not some sort of locking ring under the differential cover, like the way the rear axles are secured.....any thoughts?
Is this the cause of the 'Clunking" noise when i turn sharp? i have a 1991 Plymouth Laser RS and when i make a sharp turn to the left it makes a loud clunking sound on the front passenger side wheel until i straighten the wheel out almost all the way. Not sure if i have a bad CV Axle ? :/ please help
+Acex xAce Thanks for checking us out. Rear Wheel Drive applications would not have CV axles. Please let us know if you have any further questions, thank you!
I have a 2000 Dakota, and my CV axels look nothing like the ones you are working on in this video. I do not have bolts to unscrew to get my axel off. I need to remove my drivers side CV axel, and it is stuck. Prying, hammering... what next?
I have a 99 Dodge Dakota with oil leaking from front differential cv flanged shafts more so on left side. I've gone to one part store( advanced auto parts) and they could not order the seals. Could you give me some insight on how to correct this situation, starting with the proper name of the parts that I need to request at another parts store Thank you. Mike
Great video. I agree with robert wiese on the axle not quite coming out as shown without jacking the lower control arm a bit. That said, outstanding video and thank you for taking the time to make it
Although I would think the 2000 ones are the same as the 1999 because the interior was changed for the 2001 models but the 2000 ones are just like the 98 and 99 ones… as I call early first gen Durangos being the 98 99 and 00. But the 01 02 and 03 are the later first gen Durangos. I have an early first gen Durango and mine is a 2000 model… I also did the wheel beariband which weee the same as this model shown in the video as well…

Did Durango ever make a solid axle front ? And what years were the first Gen Durango’s ?

If it's the cover that's leaking the dealer may have a seal for you, or they may recommend that you use RTV to seal the cover back to the differential. If there's an axle seal inside that's leaking, you may need ti go to the dealer for the part.

Might a bad cv joint make a sort of low grindind noice at speed?Mine is making a noice at 30-40 mph only in 4wd.Same procedure on both sides?
Thanks for checking us out. Have a great day. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
At 4:44, you slide the axle out from the transmission, and it comes below. Mine doesn't do that! Theres just not enough room. What do I do??
Love the captions on UA-cam vids. At 4:38 when he drops the hammer youtube thinks it's applause.
+Travis Kellogg Thanks for the feedback!

+Alexander Esquer We do not have a video for this repair right now, but we'll keep this request in mind for a future video! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
is this the same procedure for a 1995 dakota they take the same cv axle as 98 durango
The video was great, however, if your replacing the driver side cv axel, you need to remove the skid plate or you'll never get it out
That set up changes my 01 Dakota awd with the 5.9 magnum slides in no bolts if you could .ake a vid for the later models that would be great
Check out their other videos Im sure they have one with that style axle.
If it's in good shape you can reuse it. If it's all rusty and falling apart you should replace it.
where are the other owners from 1aauto they too good or busy to make vids like u
My 2003 does not have those six bolts, there is no coupler....the axle goes right into the differential.....Im yanking on it but so far it is not moving. I am hoping there is not some sort of locking ring under the differential cover, like the way the rear axles are secured.....any thoughts?
Having same issue did u ever get that figured out
Odd question, autozone list the nut as a 35 mm on my 98. I assumed it was a 32 mm
How much play is too much on the mount the cv axle bolts on to?
@1AAuto what size are those 6 bolts coming from the flange part of the CV axle? I'm having trouble finding those since mines got lost sadly!
:/ please help
could you guys please do a rear bearing replacement video?

Thanks for the axle video cause I was wondering how to get that did
+Bob Jones Thanks for checking us out! 1AAuto.com

+Acex xAce Thanks for checking us out. Rear Wheel Drive applications would not have CV axles. Please let us know if you have any further questions, thank you!
So do have to take the wele and the rotors of to change the cv axle?
Yes you need to remove the wheel and rotors to change the cv axle. +Sean Nicholls
where can i buy the 6 bolts that connect the cv axle to the axle?? or is there a part number? ive been going nuts
+Adam Nitkin You might be able to them from your local dealer. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com

same thing, i have a 2001 4.7 quad cab 4x4, axle slides on as opposed to being bolted on like in the video
thank you so much for the quick feedback!
