My First Shots with the Sony a6400

- The Sony a6400 is here and ready for some testing but first I have some settings I need to change to make the camera more fluid to use. Over the years I have found on just about every camera I use, there are settings I want to customize. That is why there are there, to customize. Each of us has a different workflow when taking photos and like our cameras to respond a certain way. Though each camera brings new features, it is best to find what works well for you and set your camera up accordingly. I produce videos like these to help you learn more about your camera and it's functionality.

Amaaaaaazing photos of your kids !!! Beautiful looking family
Just got mine a week or so ago. Really fantastic little camera and so intuitive!
looks great! the a6400 is amazing
some people using a6400 as secondary camera or "b roll" here I am struggling to get it as my primary camera. #feelingpoor :(
I use it as my primary camera and I can tell you it is amazing!
If money is an issue, just getting the A6400 with the 16-50mm kitlens will bring you a great way, though you might also consider a compact-camera with build-in lens rather than a mirrorless that needs external (and often expensive) lenses.
Correct indeed, I always use AFC + Flexible spot Medium to lock the target and it keeps tracking it like a charm :) great video
@Musique Bombarde yes it works very well in low light as well, i have done a whole wedding party with the sigma 16mm also i used the canon 24-70 adapted..everything works really well.. 95 out of a 100 are in focus day or night
fantastic ..love what you do... those images were fantastic..!! liked & subed
🙌🙌🙌
Great camera! I love mine. Bought a bracket for external mic and a gimble. Works like a charm!
Nice
Can you provide a link for bracket and gimbal, please?
This is great content! Thanks!
Hey Sony, please invite this guy to your next press event. I always enjoy his review! @Sony #invitethisguy
Yes!!!
Hey there Jerad, I'm David and my team does media outreach for Sony's DI team. I'm sending you an email via your contact form. @@ditchauto @ericthestone thanks for the recommendation.
I'm on cloud 9 guys!!!
i really enjoy this camera a lot with my 100 400 gm and 85 1.4. Do you use LR to edit the shots. Waiting for an update on Capture one 12 . Sony Image edge is the only tool for me now to convert to tiff and edit
thanks for the information sir.
Good review...
This will be my first point-and-shoot ever. I figure it may be better to save up and get this guy rather than spending a third or half on a lesser camera if I’ll eventually want to upgrade. People are comparing the Panosonic Lx100 II to this, but I just feel as though Sony may be a better brand of cameras.
Can you do a video on the recommended settings for the 6400 with the Marco 90
Thank you
Gerald
I'm ready to buy this when its still not listed for launch price a year later!
İs there any sony lens 16-135 mm F 1/ 2.8 power zoom ? or anthing PZ close to this lens ?
Hey I've heard people don't like the grip on the a6400 as much as the a6600 what are your experiences with it? Is it to small to hold comfortably?
I'm still watching the video but dang that thumbnail was awesome!
Thanks. Check out our Instagram for more photos like that. @ditch_auto
BTW, the thumbnail image was shot with the Pixel 3 XL phone.
Where's the link to the settings you mentioned?
This is a great shot 2:08
What's your opinion between canon 90d and sony a6400 for video?
What lens are u using in this video
Hiya. Did you use a green screen to change your background?
Would you say the 6400 with the 18-135mm kit lens (lens has pretty good reviews on Amazon) is good enough or do you recommend the body with another type of lens. I'm a beginner, I like taking street pics and vids of me and my girlfriend goofing around restaurants and stores. Our old camera died and wanted to upgrade to something nicer. Cheers. Great video.
Kit lens is a perfect place to start. Also, look into my free photography course linked in the description of this video.
Just got mine 😄
Картинка очень красивая, видеоряд приятен для глаз! Спасибо за контент
Any use of sigma mc11 adapter?
Hi, pls Help...
I want to buy any battery grip for sony a6400...
Which battery grip should I buy for the sony a6400?
How many are available? I'm only familiar with the Meike.
Nice review bro Sony a6400 vs fuji X-t30 vs x-t2 which one better?
fukthegoog thanks
great video :) can you make sure you sync the audio
Really nice. I'm torn between the xt30 and this.. Any help would go down a treat
Xt30 has a limit of 10min for when you shoot 4k videos.
There's a guy who compares the Fuji xt30 and Sony 6400 in depth on youtube
Nice camera
Which one is better Canon Eos RP or Sony a6400 ? for travel photography
64
Please suggested me good lens vedeo & photo .both..for (sony6400)
Did you edit the pics, the one with the little girl with the cherry blossoms, were those edited? They’re really good! I have the sony a7 iii, and i want to shoot the same kind of quality as your pics
I made a few minor adjustments in Lightroom but not much. Most of what you see there was accomplished in Camera. I have my free course titled “Ditch Auto” that you can take to learn how to shoot in manual mode. I am going to update it soon for mirrorless cameras.
do you have any problems getting sharp photos without any stabilization (no ibis and no is in the lens) ? I'm just starting photography and I want the get the sony a6400 with some sigma lenses but neither have stabilization so I don't know if I'm gonna be able to get sharp image (without any blur)
what do you think ? is stabilization important for stills ? or just for videos ?
Flora he makes a good point in this video about ibs being less effective in the smaller sensor cameras. I’ve also heard the same comment from other professional and very knowledgeable amateur photographers. From what I’ve heard a stabilized lens on a non ibs camera does a better job then a non stabilized lens on an a smaller sensor ibs camera. I have the a6400 with a Sigma 16mm lens which is not stabilized and have no problem with blur. I’ve taken very sharp photos down to 1/80 shutter speed using good hold techniques. And really, once you start getting into speeds below that you really need to be using a tripod regardless of ibs and/or a stabilized lens. I would not be concerned about no ibs in this camera given all it can do which FAR outweighs not having ibs. If you feel you’re hold is just not that stable then get stabilized lenses but I wouldn’t allow the lack of ibs keep you from getting the a6400.
Fred Fournier This is actually the only incorrect and false point in the video. IBIS works BETTER with small sensors, look at Olympus IBIS, more room to move, while on A7 camera its basically non existent or very slight, no room to move around that large chip.
@Flora People have successfully photographed sharp images for a hundred years without in body or in lens stabilization. You just need to use a faster shutter speed. My main camera system is a Canon DSLR and 50mm prime, works great with no stabilization and all my images are tack sharp. Its more important for video where ibis takes out micro shakes
Which lens did you have on mounted on the a6400?
Its 85mm 1.4 G Prime
Great video. I am torn between Sony crop sensor and Fuji. If I go with Sony what lenses would you suggest that would also work with a Sony FF body?
So if you don't care about 4k, then a6000 is still a good candidate. I just don't see the market Sony went after for this body.
24mmf1.4, Zeiss 55mm f1.8 and 70200gm2.8. these lens are expensive but a lot of fun to play with. These lens will really separate your prints from cell phone prints, if you ever print. For internet posting, cellphones are pretty darn good.
Agreed. I'm doing a comparison between the iPhone XS Max and the Galaxy S10 + later this week.
The a6000 is still a great camera. Auto focus, low light performance are huge improvements in the a6400 over the a6000 but not everybody needs that.
@@ditchauto does the 16-50mm stock lens come with OSS, I see the stock 18-135 has OSS.
Would you suggest a different lens for $450 ish?
Body + lens choice?
Nice
At 4: 40 the link "below" alas does not exist !!
SOOC = Straight Out Of Compton?
Is a6400 better than canon 80d ? Which one should I grab ? Pls help
Bang Minah definitely the a6400. 80d is getting old, a6400 has much better technique
Great video. I just bought the Sony A6400 and I am wondering which lens you would recommend for travel? I will be going with my family and want to take some nice pictures but don't want to carry around too many lenses.
Depends on your budget.
Ditch Auto I would say $700
Sony 35f1.8 with oss and the sigma 16mm. The last one is big and heavy but very sharp, it can give you wide angle shots.
Did you buy it with a kit lens? The 18-135mm is a great lens with a wide range.
Ditch Auto I didn’t because I already have the kit lens for the A6000 and 50mm f1.8 and the kit lens for the A5100. Do you think the 18-105mm f/4 lens would be a good lens? I want sharp pictures but I’m not a professional photographer. I only ask because I’m going with my family to Peru and Machu Picchu so I want take some good shots and want to print some large prints for my home.
Nice. :D
did you try the 18-135 yet its amazing for the money and its stabilized
It is a great lens. I have tried it but don't own it. I only own full frame lenses and am not a fan of variable aperture lenses.
i just bought the a6400 cuz of you haha man wow i was always a canon shooter i saw only from 1 few test shots of the girl and the rain shot i was amazed and the settings are like 200x more easy then canon ,but what got me the most was you shoot movie i sort of 6k and downscale it to 4k and man oh man what a joy to view , i tested it next to the csnon 90d and canon lost by price ,but the price was not the issue i was getting tired of the major high prices of canon here in the netherlands and how people say oh canon is the best kinda apple/samsung issue i am more a test guy so must feel it and play around and my god you where so on point with this sony its a beast in a box its kinda half the price of the 90d so i wanted a lens saw a 18-135 but 600 euro darn so kinda lucky saw it on amazon for 450 euro so bought the lens also and from the saved money the new røde wireless mic set so yes it was a lot of money but 800+450+175=1425 euro / $1588 us dollar total so compared to a kit set from the 90d canon set i was gonna buy for €1774 (with the røde) / $1977 dollar i saved a bit for my next prime lens and i am gonna add you to my fave list i love guys like you who hate auto on a camera , me i am now learning the sony / have to unlearn canon haha but with your basic tips wow i came already to some nice pics from our cat ;P thanx again for your great tip and sony should send you review stuff you at least take good time and test and i did not once look away because your telling it in a way everbody knows what you mean. keep it up and greets from us out of the netherlands :)
why is sony 6500 more expensive then 6400 ?
Great video! Btw is it worth upgrading from a6000 to a6400?
I would. I did that. I was debating upgrading to a7ii or a6400. I traded in my a6000 for the a6400. I'm extremely happy with the results. If you are a vlogger, there is a lot of complaints about the flip up screen, but I think there is ways around it. Overall, I'm happy that I switch form a6000 to a6400.
@@NLMusique thanks for the insight. I am debating between a7ii and a6400 too! May i know why did you choose a6400 over a7ii?
@@andreslinn69 I chatted with a few agents from B&H and from Sony. Because I use my camera primary for travel, they said the auto focus on the a6400 would benefits me more. The auto focus on the a7ii is good but not fast. It's similar to the speed of the a6000. The only good thing about the a7ii is a full size sensor which I agree. On top of that, if you have aps-c glasses, you would have to sell of them and buy new ones. Hope this helps.
Yes I think so. Massive improvement in AF and ISO sensitivity. No video record limit.
@@ditchauto correct me if I'm wrong but I was told that better AF for both still and video
Worth the upgrade from A6000 solely for ISO / low light improvement?
I think so.
If I could post the photos I took of reflections off my pool on a moonless thin overcast night using my a6400 with a Sigma 16mm you would order one right away.
Join the free Ditch Auto Facebook group and post them. I'd love to see them.
Ditch Auto Tell you what, send me your email address and I’ll email them. I did post one on the a6400 Facebook group but the compression it did really took away a lot of the quality. Send me your email and I’ll send them. Mine is..... fournier900@gmail.com
Were the photos already edited or were those raw shots? Thanks
Raphael Jucoy i asked the same question, did you get an answer coz i really want to know
They were very close to RAW. I did some minor adjustments in Lightroom. Perhaps since I am getting this question a lot I should add a few of the straight out of camera images to the blog post. I am going to start adding before and after images when I do this to my videos to give people an idea of what I do to my images.
Ditch Auto thanks for replying! Where can i find your blog post? And one more question, what g master lens was used to shoot those amazing pictures? Thanks much😁🤩🤩🤩🤩
I have the A6000 and I don’t really like the ISO 3200 performance. How does the A6400 compare?
It's much better. Significant improvement.
I can’t recall if i’ve thrown a comment on this video or not but I like these real world “here’s what it did” approaches. This and some others helped me settle on the 6400 vs the 6500, mainly in regards to taking this out with kids and family stuff. After a couple trips and some easter egg group things I’m so glad i’ve got it. That autofocus is scary fast and good.
Gotta make sure to subscribe or i’ll go hunting for sony vids and end up asleep on one of Mark Galer’s ASMR lens reviews. (Not a knock against that persons vast knowledge just...dry presentation)
Haha. Thanks for this!!
I actually really struggle with making super clinical videos that just don’t reflect real life use cases. This was just the first of many first shot videos to come. I think it gives people a better idea of how the camera performs realistically. I don’t really care how a Camera performs pointed at a wall with a bunch of posters on it. I want to see it in real life and in real scenarios that I can relate to.
I am confused... you say you used an A6500? 2:08
I'll relisten. I may have accidentally said a6500. The model numbers are so close and I get a little excited. I currently do not own any a6500s so everything in this video was a6400.
2:18 just two thing camera $900 lens $1500 me = 💀
Soooo true. Even just the 16 - 85mm kit lens is almost $800. That's insane!
Tony Moua yah man I bought the a6400 bought me a 30mm sigma and looks damn near the same
@@Wakeen510 ...I've been debating on getting the same camera, but I'm concern their decent lenses are over my budget.
@@tonymoua1058 it sucks because i was ion the same boat you dont need a 600-800 lense to get good photos it helps just get you a sigma lense trust me they are half if not more the price and as long as you get the kit lense youll be good most photographers i know just rent the lense that they dont want buy
on the photo on 4:10 i think the camera choose right, i like the second girl is on focus ahahahahahah
If i buy it with 18-135mm len can i vlog videos with all my face and second person or its not wide and have to keep my hand far away?
it isn't wide enough for that sadly, at least assuming you have the camera in a hand-held gimble, and not on a tripod somewhere.
14-16mm is the best distance for vlogging on a sony APS-C (1.5x crop from a full-frame). Below that you got a wider view, but will suffer barrel-distortion. Above that, and you will have trouble getting your face into view when using a hand-held gimble.
If you got the money, you could get the 18-135 for regular photo's (for video I recommend the 18-105 instead, due to its constant aperture of f/4) and the 10-18 wide-angle zoomlens from Sony.
Otherwise, the Samyang / Rokinon 12mm prime is a great and very affordable alternative with little distortion, with the only downside being it does not have auto-focus.
Which one lens do u used
In the photos in this video or are you asking which lens I use most often?
@@ditchauto both
In the First Shots images I used the Sony 85mm f/1.4 GM as stated in the video but I mostly use the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM lens. When I want something small I shoot with the Sony FE 55mm f/1.8
A6400 + Tamron 28-75 2.8 what do you guys think?
That would be a nice setup.
Hy! Bro iam new to your channel... Bro, I wanna know the best Lens for Sony a6400...only one Len that can do and perform professionally
In photo & in video graphy... 😇
What do you shoot bro?
Hm, how can analize test shots when they are edited.
If I don’t edit them people complain that they look flat. When I do edit them people complain that they are edited.
@@ditchauto If they look flat - you have wrong lighting in scene or wrong camera settings (profile).
I shoot with a flat camera profile because I do not want the camera adding contrast and sharpening to the photo. I cover this in other videos on my channel.
5:37 This is all just incorrect on so many levels. Stabilization works BETTER with a smaller sensor, like how the Olympus and Panasonic are rock solid as the system has much more room to move plus it has to move a smaller lighter platform versus a big sensor with limited room to make any corrections. The worst IBIS is the one the Sony Alpha FF bodies with a small mount diameter and large chip, and the best one is in the Olympus cameras with a tiny sensor and large mount to move.
Other wise thanks for the great insight, you just need to take care about technical details if you want to be a camera reviewer, which I think you would be great at
May be true for micro 4/3 but as far as Sony goes, the IBIS is better on my a7rIII than the a6500. Period.
Dude you no longer have instagram?
I recently changed the name to @gearandlight
You said 6500 ?
a6400 good for photography many people say that this is video camera
Was it me or what? Those photos looked little over exposure.
I will be posting them to the DitchAuto.com website soon. They are not over exposed IMO. Compression for video may have altered things a little bit. The orchard photos are higher-key for sure but on purpose. Thanks for the comment!
The post is live on the DitchAuto.com website now with images.

@@socratesvela8285 I don't think they are overexposed, Its just his photoediitng style, I personally like how they look.

IMO, the Sony marketing folks dropped the ball big time when they introduced this camera. What were the two complaints that resounded all over the Internet? NO IBIS and THE MIKE BLOCKS THE FLIP UP SCREEN.
The first complaint can really easily be solved by adding a lens with OSS and the second complaint is easily solved by adding a bracket for the mike. Sony could have included a bracket for a pittance OR they could have sold one as an accessory OR at least they could have had links to purchasing such a bracket.
Such innovative marketing would have stilled those Yahoos who were beating their chests and screaming that "THE DAMN MIKE BLOCKS THE FLIP UP SCREEN, Boo Hoo, Boo Hoo!"
BTW... I just love my A6400 and now that it has Animal Eye-AF, it is even better!
I thought you were gonna show us some of the things you changed on the setting grrr
I sold mine, tracking isn't working on this camera.
a6400 more expensive than a6500 in korea. lol
Of course, thats because a6500 come first than a6400
I like those kids...
Just a few photos on your first shots, that's strange and too much talk. I thought I will enjoy this content.
not a interesting year anymore
Top bad channels tease with an amazing picture and then never show it in the entire video. Feels a bit like cheating.
