I kept hearing about these “100 tricep push down before benching” on other Wenning videos and thought Matt must be crazy or I didn’t hear right. Glad I saw this video, now I see it makes a lot of sense. Great info Matt many thanks.
This video is 5 years old now and it totally changed my training for the better since then. Someone asked me what "WW" means at the start of my lift days in my notebook... Wenning Warmup!
I've lifted weights for years and have read and practiced in almost every program/method possible. I can say that your methods are refreshing and on-point. Thanks!
I added Wenning Warm-ups about six months ago, initially adding two cycles, waiting for my main lifts to go back up and then six weeks ago adding a third cycle. All but my bench have gone up and my bench is back on its way. Fitness and recovery have all improved and I feel less injury prone as a 45 year old lifter.
Excellent tip from Matt. With Wenning Warmups, you can kind of "sneak" a lot of volume into your program that puts more muscle on you, and addresses weaknesses. I do the band leg curls as warmups and my 30 year history of hamstring cramps came to an end, at age 65 !!! Thanks Matt!!!
I feel like I'd be a bit burnt out doing this before benching but you're the pro so I'm going to go for it. Thank you for the great channel and tips. I'm definitely going to get your bench press program.
@@DuckSau2e I would recommend this warm up 100%. I was surprised and amazed at how prepared I felt to bench. Having a pumped upper back gives you that much more of a stable base to press off of. My numbers went up too which proves Matt knows exactly what he's talking about.
@@DuckSau2e Basically. I did 4sets of light lat pulldowns (around 30-35lbs) for 25 reps super set with tricep pushdowns using the same lat pulldown machine (15 lbs) for 25 reps and used a 10 lb dumbbell for 25 reps of standing shoulder press (one arm at a time). Repeat those 3 exercises back to back for 4 sets and you're plenty warmed up. I then only did 2 light warm ups on flat bench (95lbs x 8, 115 x 8). I'm not much of a bencher but I was able to go from just one set of 225 for barely 2 reps to 4 sets of 3.
I do ( flat db bench - cable row - overhead tri - facepulls --- incline db bench - lat pulldown - tricep ext - bicep curl ) 2 rounds of this. Changing it a little to other angles makes it feel easier. You are warming up - not battleing fatigue
It’s funny because the pre fatigue warmup seems counterintuitive, but it always gets your muscles ready. My track coach would have me breathing heavy before real practice even started just from the intensity of the warmup but I was always ready to get on the runway and jump

Please elaborate on triceps being the primary mover in the bench press. The pecs are big kick ass muscles that are primarily fast twitch but of course triceps lock out the weight. If you were to be doing say squat/bench in one day would you do both warm ups back to back or do lower body warm up then squat then do upper warm up then bench? Or both one after the other then continue with your squat/bench like normal

What would the lower body warm up example look like ?
... pay him
Leg presses 25x4
odds are he is going to say your weaknesses. I have had success recently using 4x25 belt squats circuited with 4x25 posterior chain exercise like banded good mornings, reverse hypers or back extensions. Start with less total reps and build up to 100 total (i.e. start at 3x15 and build from there). Works really well.
standing ab = crunches at the cable while standing? @TehHillbilly
