    My opinion: Behringer K-2 is a nice synth but it's definitely not an (old filter type) MS-20. The character is there, but it lacks the nasal, round and dirty sound I like so much on the original MS-20. But to be fair, Korg didn't do a great job either with its MS-20 mini when it comes to these specific sounds.

    So as a owner of the original rev1 (35 chip) I had the opportunity to do my own side by side tests. I ended up selling the original for a few reasons: usability is WAY better with the K2 (midi implementation, note priority), I get to sit the K2 better in the mix with less effort and last but not least - for what I have got for the MS20 I bought a Behringer Neutron, a Model D, a PRO 1 including a 3 device wooden rack stand and still have money left for a Behringer Crave once its available.

      thanks for your comment - I agree that the price being paid for a vintage model for most users would not justify the difference. If you're a purist and want THAT sound, the K-2 would only be a compromise though. That being said, it's a compromise I can live with. Also I guess that the prices for the vintage models will continue to fall as it was the case already when Korg released their MS-20 versions.
      And you're a proof that more and more people sell their vintage versions for exactly your reasons.
      I'll be there when the prices have fallen enough ;)

      @@clarkharrell2227 Hi Clark, tough question. Currently the K2 but the Model D is used in like every single project. The Neutron still amazes me every time I am working on new patches. Honestly, they complement each other fairly well given they all are monosynths. @@limbicbits Thanks for your kind reply. You are absolutely right, the K2 is somewhat of a compromise soundwise but not as big as one might expect. I found the difference more obvious when they released a Rev2 with the LM13600 chip - at least I failed way less in blindtests compared to K2 vs MS20 Rev1. Great upload and super programing on the K2 by the way!

    Whether it’s on par with the original isn’t that important to me. It’s got great character and unique features. It’s got attitude and doesn’t sound so fabricated like maybe the ‘metalizer’ did in the Arturia Minibrute. Those filters are worth the price of admission alone and having played the Korg rerelease, I really think Behringer’s knock off sounds better. It’s also built better.

    Used to own an original MS-20 that i used a lot in the 80s. This is the first demo i hear from this clone and it sounds remarkably familiar! Cool. On the original you could patch the voltage from the modulation wheel to the VCO's which gave a much larger bend range than without the patch. I'm curious to how the K2 operates in that respect.

    Hi everyone. I have just purchased the K2, what a lovely synth! Can anybody help me figure out on how to patch up the K2 properly so that it reacts to mod wheel action on my controller keyboard and creates the classic "vibrato" effect when turning the mod wheel up. I cannot seem to get the patching procedure right to have this work. Any advice is much appreciated by me! Also have any of you experienced that the Filer 1 setting on the K2 (when a key is pressed on the keyboard controller) brings up an audible level of noise even though all controls are turned all the way down and the synth is supposed to make no sound at all? Or is this noise part of the Filter 1 design by default and the noise is supposed to be there. BTW Filter 2 setting is perfectly quiet. Thank you guys! Tom

    • @limbicbits
      @limbicbits  4 роки тому +1

      It really depends on what you're aiming for. From Behringer's line, only Pro-1 for me has been a keeper. Here's why:
      1. I've got some kind of a hate love relationship with Moog (style) synths. I love them in the beginning but can't stand the sound after two weeks. Happened to me with Prodigy, Mother 32, Grandmother, Behringer D and with the SE-02.
      2. The K2 didn't convince me too much as an MS20-clone but it's a cool synth anyways. Go for it if you want to get a grittier analogue synth.
      3. WASP Deluxe until now is B's synth that I liked the least.
      4. TD-3 is cool but it's that - as a clone limited to a small range of sounds.
      5. Pro-1 is a good clone and a fantastic synth on its own. But I've always liked the sequential sound character.
      6. Crave - for the money being asked a no brainer. I don't like the sequencer too much though.
      So as you see - it's a question of taste. You might come to a completely different conclusion. If you like, check out my channel for more videos.

      @@limbicbits Where on this list would you put the 2600? If I remember correctly you don’t like the Arp sound too much. I’m in the market now for something like 2600 or MS-20 mini/K-2, something to experiment with, patch some cables, make some techno noise. Didn’t decide yet, but if I lean towards the Ms-20 sound, I’ll probably buy Behringer, not Korg. I’m really tempted by the Barp 2600, it looks like a blip bloop heaven.. The 2600 is able to produce great bass tones, experimental sounds, drones, leads and so much more. Plus, it's way more flexible than the MS-20, although the latter is also great for Techno.

    How's its' stability? I'm looking at getting all of the Behringer modules, but the last time I dealt seriously with a true analog synth was back in the 80's. Our high school offered a class in electronic music and we had an old EML 101 synth that was so unstable, you could create a Jupiter-8 brass lead, write down the settings, come back to it a half hour later, plug those settings back in, and it would be a harpsichord. I suspect the true analog synths nowadays are infinitely more stable.

    • @limbicbits
      @limbicbits  3 роки тому

      lol. the EML is quite unstable, even after warming up. No worries. The K2- remains stable for quite a while unless you won't expose it to a massive change in temperature or humidity. Don't expect the sound to be 100% the same the next day, though, if you have a lot of modulation etc. going on. But that's with almost ever analog gear the same which is not digitally controlled.

      I don't think so. But in my opinion, the K-2 is much closer to the MS-20 mini than it is to the original MS-20 (1st version). As just for the sound alone and built quality, I'd choose K-2 over the MS-20 mini. As clone, both units couldn't convince me completely.

    • @limbicbits
      @limbicbits  3 роки тому +1

      Hi, Some of them are bought but as you've assumed, I don't buy most of them. They're loaners that have to be returned to the companies after the demo video. In any case, I wouldn't have the space to host all of them, either. Plus, as a musician, it always makes me kind of nervous having too much stuff around me. I rather focus on a smaller selection that works fine for me.

    • @user-sx2iw2hq3l
      @user-sx2iw2hq3l 3 роки тому

      @@limbicbitsHow did you manage to organize it. After all, if I write to a company or an intermediary that I will do reviews, and even want money for this, they will send me where to go😂? Probably, first you need to get a certain number of subscribers?

    • @limbicbits
      @limbicbits  3 роки тому

      @@user-sx2iw2hq3l Well,I guess receiving money for a review would be kind of pointless as companies would like to influence the outcome of the review. In this case, at least you need to make it transparent for your viewers. But to be honest, at this point we're talking about several thousands of followers. My channel is way too small that I could be in that situation.
      Plus, I'm still focussing only on demo videos and tutorials. All equipment based questions my viewers ask will be replied based upon my personal experiences. And as I'm following certain styles in my music, I'd for example not giving advice on the best synths for prog rock. As it's simply not my genre.
      Coming back to your other question, here are my thoughts and recommendations:
      - Never build up a channel only for the purpose of making money with it
      - Ask other musician friends if they would borrow you a synth for a couple of weeks
      - Focus on something, you really like and you don't absolutely suck at
      - Be there for your community
      - It's just equipment. Don't waste your time over endless discussions just because someone doesn't share your opinion
      - Get in touch directly with companies and offer them something particular. In my case, it's my knowledge as sound designer and synth nerd. Other channels have an enormous reach or do great tutorials for free (or in exchange of a synth). After all, it's business when getting in touch with a company.
      - Especially at the beginning: Don't shy away from doing something for free to expand your contact list but also don't sell out.
      On the other hand, I'm yet not even over 10k subscribers, so who am I giving advice ;)?
