I got to see Ralph when he was fronting L.A. Guns, he was really good on the old tunes and the couple new ones they did with him on the release they had. I had always thought that Steel Panther came from Metal Skool which came together after the Atomic Punks (VH cover band) morphed into Metal Skool.
hahah..He has the year totally off, absolutely no way Vince Neil got on stage with them in 1991, they didn't even exist yet. Russell Parrish (Satchel) didn't even start playing in their Van Halen cover band The Atomic Punks until 2002, Then they started Steel Panther, which was first called Metal Shop, Danger Kitty (Only for the Discover commercial) then Metal Skool and finally Steel Panther.
Not to mention Glen was in Fight from 91-95 and Ralph was the lead singer in L.A. Guns from 98-2000 along with Glenn and Stix modern Oasis like glammy non metal band The Thornbirds before they did Metal Skool.
Satchell/Glenn Parrish also wrote and recorded both Fight albums with Judas Priest's Scott Travis and Rob Halford. He also is a instructor at GIT. Him and Stix has a band called The Thornbirds who are really good, more of a Oasis old school glam band then metal.
From what I have seen in other interviews with the band members, this is the only guy that may not have really been in on the joke. He was in an actual Van Halen cover band, and he took his role in it seriously. Satchel (another word for sack) was an instructor at GIT, and joined in the act for fun, and put on a costume and persona for the act. The rest of it seemed to follow his lead, while this guy was along for the ride.

They existed... they just weren't called Steel Panther

That makes total sense.
