Seeing a Dutch theme park on the other side of the world is wild for a Dutch person. The level of detail is insane, even spot on with the weather; you could even fool me. Excellent job with this video!

Being Dutch, it's interesting to know that this themepark is on the other side of the world. It does seem to be quite accurate.... and then I noticed the hills in the background and was convinced it's not actually here ;-)

It's not really weird when you consider the Netherlands was Japan's only trading partner and source of information on the outside world for more than 200 years. The Meiji-restoration which saw Japan basicly become modern was achieved through the Iwakura-mission around the world to learn from Western European powers. It was an idea proposed by a dutch engineer named Guido Verbeck.
Yeah, and also a definite lack of bikes.
As a Dutch person I can confirm that this theme park is very realistic. The weather is typically Dutch and there’s even the same amount of Japanese tourists!!!

That park is based after North Braband there is North holland and South Holland
In North Holland is the head state Amsterdam
they do have a sakura blossom/japan festival in amstelveen every year, though it's not what it used to be due to japanese people moving away from amstelveen.
Being Dutch this is freakily correct. Looks like going trough Holland. I mean the roads and stones they use, the railings on the bridges… this is done extremely well

I've been at Huis Ten Bosch Nagasaki in 2014 and as a Dutchy, I can say it mimics our small country quite well. Thoughh, it was quite surreal to walk in a japanes representation of our buildings and structures. When the local visitors knew we were Dutch the party started... I had to have pictures taken with many many many visitors. It was a weird but fun day.
Take a job there as a Dutch person, then wear Dutch traditional clothing. :D you could take pictures millions of times per month.
As a Dutch person there, you will be what Mickey Mouse is in Disneyland :). Wil er zelf ook wel eens heen om te zien hoe het is. Die Domtoren (ja toch?) is ook geweldig nagebouwd.
@@roelfrizzle you should really experience it. The domtower there... Has an elevator... And there's even an operator in the elevator whose job it is to press the up and down buttons... It is an exceptional country!

Im a tall Dutch and I have experience with getting pictured with my bike... Cuz I live close to Giethoorn.
The level of detail in the architecture is honestly astounding. I live very close to the real Huis ten Bosch and it is a near exact replica. Funnily enough there is a very humble Japanese Garden (at a mansion called Clingendael) not far away from the Huis ten Bosch in The Hague, which is a favourite spot for locals to visit. Pretty great to see the mutual cultural interest between Japan and the Netherlands blossoming today still from its 16th century beginnings!

Honestly I agree with you on the architecture being very accurate, but as a miller’s apprentice I feel somewhat awkward about their windmills haha
I worked there in 1991 and 1992 as a Chef in one of the hotels. Just after the opening in 1990. On this video it looks rather quiet in regards to visitors, at that time we recieved over 10K visitors per day. It is nice to see how the city has developed and that is exactly line with h the vision of the original creator and architect Mr. Yoshikuni Kamika. Amazing
I remember my Japanese friends talking about this theme park and showing me pictures of it. It’s so fun to see more through this video, only wish they would put more elements like a Dutch restaurant with stampot and erwtensoep but maybe they left that out to make the visitor curious to visit the Netherlands. Would love to see it in person one day!

As someone living in the Netherlands, this is the LAST place I'd visit if I go to Japan. I come for the Japanese culture, not a small Netherlands.

I thought about this myself, and luckily knowing a fair bit of history, I think I know why;
The Dutch and Japanese have had close trading ties for a long time. Due to the Catholic tendency to convert people in other countries - which the Japanese weren't fond of - the Dutch were majority Protestant and did not have that tendency. And thus for a long time the Dutch were the *only* Westerners allowed to trade in Japan. This ofcourse means that the Japanese had far more cultural exchange with the Dutch rather than anyone else, which explains the interest they have in Dutch culture.
There's a few interesting videos on youtube about it, look up 'netherlands japan trade' and I'm sure you'll find them!
As a dutch person, it's creepy how ACCURATE this is. They even thought of all the details, nothing seems out of place except for the mountains in the background

I just checked it out. Google earth allows you to pretty much walk through the entire park if you want to. After I finish watching this, I’m gonna go check it out.

The reason why someone in Japan might want to build something like this is an interesting idea in itself. I suspect it has something to do with the fact that for most of Japan's isolationist Edo Period, the Netherlands were their only regular link to the outside world. There was a Dutch Enclave in Nagasaki, and Dutch delegations gave the Japanese everything from updates on current events outside of Japan to books on Science and Medicine.
As a Ducth person: I have seem some Ducth themed parks or areas in parks, but they all were very unrealistic and hollywood ish. This park represents the Netherlands in such a realistic way. Not only the argitecture but also the composition of the placement of buildings, the water and even the streets are very well done. Watching this video give me the feeling you really walked in a Dutch town. The feeling you are in the Netherlands and when you turn 180 degrees you are in Japan again. This feels very surreal.
Yup. Went to orange city in the US and everything was plastered and propped up because they don’t really use bricks there.
I wonder if you could make (with help from actual nederlander architects, city planners, designers, and historians, a completely original Dutch styled town/theme park similar to this in the us that you can just… go to.)
There's something really uncanny about it with how realistic it is and then simultaneously super empty, with so few people. Like a bit haunted. You couldn't find a Dutch city this quiet in the middle of the day.
And the mountains in the back, some trees also look out of place it’s like some other dimension version of the Netherlands

Very accurate representation of what Dutch architecture generally looks like. I could easily recognize quite a lot of them. I have seen scenes from Amsterdam, Haarlem, Utrecht, Gouda, Volendam, Hoorn. Sneek and Enkhuizen, to name a few... and the umbrella covered street reminds me of Deventer. And rhen the T-rex and the Triceratops spoil it all lol (both are very north-American). The Mosasaur however, is spot on. It was found first in the Netherlands, in a limestone quarry near Maastricht.
What is missing then? Bicycles... it needs more bicycles .... and places selling Dutch food.... for a nation of fishermen, having no herring is a no-no lol.

The boat seems very oldfashioned - so oldfashioned that it makes me think they either bought an old one that was going for scrap or recreated something from old drawings. The modern rondvaartboten all have panoramic windows on the roof.
And yes, no broodje kroket met een patatje oorlog is criminal.
(Red Lobster is also hard to impossible to find in NL)
And if they want to go for accuracy, some trash on the streets. I think I would feel so strange to be in a slightly off consensed mini NL thats just super clean

@@JasperJanssen I feel like in Japan as a collectivist society, cleanness comes more from people littering less, while in NL they (municipalities) are just doing a decent job at cleaning up after us
Huis Ten Bosch is amazing. The detailed recreation of Dutch architecture is enough reason to go for me. Then, throw in tulips or seasonal plantings/decorations, a beautiful natural setting, fun events, interesting/interactive exhibits, and some tasty food, and I'm there for sure. 😆
I do have a question you may be able to answer, guys. Why such a huge a theme park based on the Netherlands? Do the Japanese generally have some affinity for all things Dutch? I tried to Google it but got no answer.

Yes, the Dutch and the Japanese have a long history. We were one of the first/only countries to do trade with the country during their self imposed isolation.
That, and we are one of the limited amount of royal houses remaining, which I am sure forms some bond with the Imperial Family :) (That's just a guess though)

In case you want to check out some more info about it, I suggest googling for the word 'Rangaku'. It's the term the Japanese have used to describe learning about the West generally, specifically through the exchange of visual and material European culture with the Dutch during the Edo period. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rangaku
I study the subject regularly and it is honestly an extraordinary history that still has a large impact on both Japanese and Dutch (and European) society today.
Also specifically in Nagasaki, the Dutch were allowed to trade and interact with Japan on a designated island. This island is called Deshima and I believe the old neighbourhood that was built for the Dutch traders/delegations is still in tact en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dejima. So maybe it's also got something to do with that, but I don't know
@@BuzzinsPetRock78 Enough countries traded with Japan. We were the first/only who were allowed to have a trader living on Japanese soil. This is because that Dutch trader took the curtency to learn Japanese.
Holy moly the level of detail is spot on. If I were a dutch expat, living in Japan, I would definitly go here every now and then to feel like I am back home again. It is crazy realistic.
growing up as a military child my family was stationed in sasebo for half of my childhood. our military base we lived on was right next to the park, and we loved going there all the time. we moved to yokosuka in 2018, and then to the U.S.A in 2022, so it’s been forever since we went. hopefully someday i can relive some memories there in the future
Surely one of the most insane and beautiful relics of bubble era Japan when the country was just overflowing with money. Surely it’s still flourishing today because of this level of detail. I’m Dutch living in Tokyo and went once but would surely go again, it’s one of those places that offers a different experience every season.
As a Dutch person, if/when I travel to Japan I might come here just to have a sense of home/familiarity if I’m homesick. That’s how well done it is! You could just show this without context and I’d say that it could be an actual place here!

The distance from Tokyo to Nagasaki is about the same as from Amsterdam to Florence, so I might not be able to go there often.😅
It's a shame no " Delfts Blauw/Delftware pottery" was there. It's famous Dutch pottery which is very inspired/derived from japanese pottery. They often even used Japanese pigments back in the day

@@yaralaterveer the early blue Delfts were based on Chinese. The later , more complex stuff, is actually inspired from japanese pottery and used blue pigment and gold imported from Japan. This is well known. Even techniques from japanese pottery were taken over by the Dutch.

Been there back in 2008, was fun to see all of those buildings most of which I have never seen back home, but it's disappointing that there's hardly any Dutch food there.

@@jackychan7511 nah, as long as they stick to the sweet stuff they should be good. I'd love to see some kind of stamppot or so, but that indeed probably wouldn't work. But who doesn't like stroopwafels? Or poffertjes, pannenkoeken or oliebollen? And I could even see some deep fried snacks do pretty well.
From another video I've seen a while ago I know they have had some Dutch snacks, even including stroopwafels.....but those were barely recognizable as such.

As a Dutch person, thank you for sharing this gem of a theme park as I had absolutely no idea that something like this even existed - it's kinda surreal seeing it! I do think they could/should add at least a few typically Dutch snacks, such as stroopwafels or pannenkoeken/poffertjes, but it is impressive to see how well made everything is. Could've fooled me if it wasn't for the gigantic mountains in the background :D

@@strife2746 Oh there are plenty of other places I'd want to visit first in Japan, but for me personally this is one of those "huh, how do other people perceive us as the general people?", especially when something is a dedicated themepark. Still, I do agree, plenty of choices where to go first that is not this park!

Or words like Hallo, Tot ziens, Welkom, goedemiddag small words that everyone could learn. They also could have placed random bikes for the sentiment. Or even do a rent-a-bike service. Now this park feels kinda detached from actual Dutch cultural things. But either way very impressive!

This is insane. The architecture, the choice of bricks, windows, pavements, everything is just very well chosen/copied. Seeing mountains in the background and theme park music continuously playing in the background gives me a brain error haha. Even here people sometimes build something new in an old dutch style and the look and feel is just off by modern choices in an old architecture style. But this level of dedication is mind boggling, everything looks as if it’s been there for at least a century.

it’s amazing to me how everything’s in English. I think it would be absolutely wild to live there. You could enjoy all the seasonal things that go on like a beer in the summer extreme Christmas in the winter. I’m sure the fall colors are beautiful as well and I bet you money there’s a cherry tree somewhere in that park. I would definitely say yes.

I am amazed at how well they captured the feel of Dutch culture and architecture. Some of these streets look like they were shipped straight in from the Netherlands. It is almost disturbing.

Wow, it seemed so empty when you went, and the park is HUGE. Seems like you would need a whole week to really see every part of the park lol. Those houses at the beginning on the water were beautiful.

Imagine as a Dutch person going for a vacation to Japan and then coming across this.
I heard of this park before. For me, as a Dutchman, this video is so surreal. The buildings are really spot on, you could fool me with carefully recorded footage and tell me it's from the Netherlands; I'd believe you. Of course most signs are in English and that's where I would notice something is off... oh and the fact that the streets are so damn clean. Of course the mountains give away as well that this is not the Netherlands. I like the idea of this park quite a lot. It would be fun, specifically for Dutch people of course, to visit this park whilst on holiday in Japan.
They got the atmosphere and style right of the old towns. Especially liked the copy of central Utrecht with the Dom (church) towering over the buildings and the grachten with the, for Utrecht typical, lower level (werven). Still nothing like the real thing, of course, but if you do not look too closely, it would still make me homesick. Wish we had a Japanese equivalent in The Netherlands...apart from a few Japanese gardens.

(I'm American) I almost died when I saw you walking up to a Red Lobster! LOL! I couldn't believe they would have one there. The menu seems very different though. Most of what you had would not be available here in America and they seem to do a good job catering to the local taste. The only thing they have here is the cheese biscuits which are famous and my favorite. In America though, they are unlimited and come to your table before you order. Thank you for the videos. I definitely want to visit this park!

For context: Dutch merchants were some of the first Europeans that the Japanese ever encountered, and Western science in the Edo period was called "Dutch Studies". The man-made island of Dejima in Nagasaki was the only place Dutch traders were allowed to live and trade in Japan.
So this isn't random. There's a historical connection there.

This is really amazing to see! It's so incredibly realistic! The hotel l'europe and the stairs to the street from jetty, the canals, the paving of the streets. Just everything! ( Coming from a Dutchy, I think I would be seriously confused walking there and not see what would be there around the corner in real life!) And the weather is just the cherry on top to give visitors the most authentic experience!

Nice tour. I have a very large collection of Arita Fukagawa #904. It's pinecones. I started with a 12-piece dining set complete with individual ashtrays. Super deal on them. Now have many more. Love them. Wish I could see more of museum.

Reminds me of "Colonial Williamsburg" in Virginia.
At least Colonial Williamsburg sells items in their gift shops to the period (barring t-shirts in the more "traditional" gift shops). I found it kinda dumb the gift shops are selling Japanese stuff in a Dutch themed theme park

@@mlm21 I had pizza made by Italians in West Germany (yes, a long time ago) and it was of the personal pan size here and thin crust and did not use a fork or knife. They do not make deep dish ya know!

I can't find if anyone already said this, but for those who don't know, the gift shop is so funny because Schiphol is the major Dutch airport, the yellow signs in the shop are the same style as the ones at the airport and it says "TerminalSouvenirs" at the door, really fitting for the gift shop you exist "the Netherlands" through!

If only the streets, lawn and canals were this clean in the Netherlands. It needs WAY more litter to be authentic. And it could use some more tree's.

I'm not dutch. Born in indonesia and also half american. But now live in the netherland since I was 13. I never know this exist. This was fun to watch and the park looks beautiful. They have done well replicating the buildings. It's exactly the same like here in the netherland.
