My Grandfather was singing at this drum when it busted open, he sang with this group for many years and danced traditional all his life. He grew up on the plains in Mandaree North Dakota and was one of the last speakers of the Hidatsa language. After this was filmed he suffered from a massive heart attack and took his sacred journey home. At this drum he was surrounded by all who loved him. He was an amazing person who did so much for the community and I hope to always continue his legacy. I don't know how I stumbled across this video. To me this evokes a powerful message from our creator, the drum is meant to represent the heartbeat of the earth and to see it broken like that only reveals to me of what was to come. Our sacred journey of life is always fragile, devastating and beautiful.

Growing up I was always taught things like this frm my elders n whn something went wrong like that someone around that drum is doing something they shouldn't be that drum is an animal n as humans we gotta learn to respect that animal for it sacrificed its life for us to use it as a tool for our ceremonies n whn it's disrespected the grandfather's will come take it away frm you

drum shaming is not the way to go. Fucked up title and thumbnail. Some elders say, if you bust a drum it means you're on the right path. Not everything is meant to last forever. Sometimes we need to tie a new drum and bring new medicine. Never was i taught to publicly shame someone, especially around that arena.

Its all on the drum keeper! No one else is responsible for that drum but him. He's the one who knows what he's doing in his life and should take better care of that drum. This happened to one of my uncle's, that spirit in that drum will rough you up unless you start to take care of it. Fix it up. Put that hide to rest and find a new hide. The same spirit will remain unless you follow the right protocols and do what needs to be done for that drum every spring.

RB Star Fan well they actually probably paid for it. Not all native have some to pass a drum down to them. Plus don’t be all getting mad at them because all drums do that and it’s not like your giving your life up. The spirit in the drum understands and I truly know that they didn’t mean to disrespect it. And you don’t ask someone to bless the drum, you do it your self. And I know they did. So clam down because there all adults there and and they know what to do when something happens like that.
