  • What a great start to the Tim Cone era of Gilas Pilipinas!
    Despite having a short preparation time and some untimely injuries, they were able to pull off two massive wins against Hong Kong and Chinese Taipei. Tune in to hear what the Boleros had to say about the games.

    Refreshing to see Gilas dominate. This new triangle offense coupled with a healthy Kai Sotto will get us farther than the Dribble-Drive offense under the previous coach's regime. At the same time, I hope it's enough to get us over the edge against very stiff resistance in the Olympic Qualifying Trials. Gilas has to contend with powerhouses like Latvia and Georgia in the same group, so the team needs to work overtime. Hopefully, each of the players are able to negotiate with their respective teams to allow them a bit more time off to get to know Coach Tim's system better and mesh with their teammates more effectively.

    Dribble and drive offense is very demanding. By the time you're in the 4th quarter and you needed more energy if the game is tight, you're already exhausted. But passing offense is not that demanding and by the time of the 3rd and 4th quarter, you still have a lot of reserve, and this is a major benefit.

    • @bolerosph
      @bolerosph  3 місяці тому

      I would argue that the drible drive offense is more demanding to the ballhandlers of the team. Hopefully we continue to execute like this during future games. Seeing a Filipino team compile a ton of baskets off assists is really beautiful! -Maui

    I think the familiarity from the Ginebra guys, even Coach Richard and some from Asian Games roster really helped the newcomers learn Coach Tim's system. yung maganda kasi sa system ni CTC, natututo sila paano mag react sa defense ng kalaban and dun na papasok yung ibang sets ng Triangle or even outside triangle. with regards to Kai, malaki magiging role nya sa team because of his post presence and his passing ability. I think offense wise, wala namang issue but I think the defense will be tested.

Same thing for Kai , Japeth n brownlee . It makes easier for them having Scottie , oftana, Dwight , cj n newsome on the front court

    it's not pure triangle anymore, mixed and more varieties, sometimes DDO pa nga. since CTC moved to Purefoods/Bmeg and Ginebra he's not using the pure triangle. regarding sa japan, the reason they got suspended in early 2010's because they have 2 pro leagues are not unified, almost same thing with us back then BAP vs SBP.. good job sirs. good episode.

      @bolerosph  3 місяці тому

      Yep, there are a lot of variations already. We still think they need to run more sets to get shooters open. It will be tested against Latvia in July because they shoot a bunch of 3s. Gilas will be in danger if they shoot less than 30 threes like they did in these two games

    Have been following SBP since it started after BAP was revoked. The grassroots program was the main goal. It's easier said and done to ask a kid to get a passport and have a dual citizenship that is young without any knowledge of the Philippines. We offered a lot of them who refused with the likes of 6'2 Sedrick Barfield, 6'10 Quentin Millora-Brown, 7'0 Sage Tolentino. Aj Edu was the kid who agreed to have dual citizenship. Kai Sotto, Carl, KQ were part of Batang Gilas. Dwight has been scouted since HS by the SBP who have Philippines passport. In my opinion you'll win some you'll lose some but the US and local player recruitment/development was a success.

    • @Kirie01
      @Kirie01 3 місяці тому +2

      Any idea/insight why some guys refused to get a PH passport? Since if all else fails, PH is not a bad fallback for basketball players considering the sport’s popularity here. May repercussions or restrictions ba home country nila (ex. Japan doesn’t allow dual citizenship once you reach a certain age)? I’m assuming naman na with SBP’s assistance yung pagkuha nila ng PH passport, so it shouldn’t be a hassle. Or may mga kapalit ba if they get SBP’s assistance (ex. may commitment ba agad to play for Gilas)?

    • @bolerosph
      @bolerosph  3 місяці тому +1

      Yes its easier said than done thats true. Probably are only hope is if Fiba will be more lax when it comes to nationality for asia again. The unfortunate reality is that only Asia has this rule that kid’s need passport before theyre 16. I understand also why some players opt to not get their passport due to potential dual citizen issues and I dont think the process is as easy as it seems. I’ve spoken to some prospects in the past the whole process of getting scouted and trying out is actually costly for them too. Hope we find a common ground in the future, sayang talaga the prospects we’re missing out. Our pool could be expanded a TON. Thanks for the insights! -Maui

Kinapos lang talaga yun Chinese Taipei sa last 4mnutes . Maging healthy lang gilas n keep perfect that triangle with the same players I like they chance . 1) 32:27 this latest gilas iteration will most likely be treated like those in the pba team: 12 man roster, with others on reserve for injury and similar purposes. Just like what happened at the very first window. Those on reserve will most likely be familiar with CTC's system already, like in the case of japeth
    2) on the team's age/seniors. Seems like plan A is to develop the young ones to take over in 4 years' time. Plan b/safety net ang seniors. Also, cone did say that the template was hadadi-led iran. Tanders na ren hadadi when they were still a top team in asia. Perhaps thats the 'fail-safe' intention for jmf if di pa ren gumana sina kai etc by 2027 lol (least likely)
    3) re JB, perhaps they're thinking he's asia's lebron (longevity king lol), not unlike kuya cardo for sokor
    4) a 'surprise' big would be kouame, if ma-illakad na maging local. Lets see if this smc/pba-led gilas can hack it, if that's the intention

    To ppl who watched B League, Kai's dbldbl performance was expected. Manood kasi kayo dun so the reactions won't be a mix of surprise and disbelief with lingering cynicism and doubt. Kai has turned a corner ever since fouling out at one point, especially against the Chiba Jets. Remember this guy ever since Ignite has been facing nobody but international caliber big men since he was 18 yrs old until now. When was the last time Junmar had a dbldbl performance sa world stage. You're buying too much into the criticism, how about starting to believe. Even Japanese fans call him an NBA prospect tapos tayo mga Pinoy nagsasalita na ng tapos. Heck don't believe me, just believe in CTC. Dominating Asia is not far away for the kid.

      I follow the Bleague, and Kai Sotto only started to breakout during his last 2 games during the b2b vs Chiba Jets. It doesnt meen that we don’t believe in his potential when we name a few of his weaknesses. My hope is (along with every Filipino, I hope) he does indeed get to the NBA, unfortunately there are still a lot of work to do for that to happen. Continuing to improve his overall game esp defending on the perimeter will be a must given the way NBA teams play nowadays. -Maui

    • @OxygenC2
      @OxygenC2 3 місяці тому

      @@bolerosph Don't think that I'm saying you're haters of Kai. I merely think that his weaknesses are overstated. A lot of star bigs in the NBA play drop, and there are many "slow footed" big men in championship caliber teams like Zubac, Nurkic, Horford, Lopez, etc.
      Disagree din ako sa breakout niya being Chiba, he had a 5 pt 10 reb game earlier. That is where I think his game changed for the better, after siya pinagalitan ni Kawamura. Ofc I agree that he's not perfect, but I truly think the kid can still reach the NBA after turning the corner.

    Gab, re: Japan shooters. You forgot Keisei Tominaga aka Coco Ichibanya (cause he's Japanese Curry, get it?) who's doing really well in D1 right now and Yuki Kawamura, Kai's PG. They are doing extremely well, we really should emulate them and reboot our pro league and integrate the grassroots.
    I think it's way too early to pass judgement. But some way too early thoughts:
    I love the Kai / Carl / Oftana / KQ / New lineup.
    I think we need to get rid of Scottie and CJ. Replace them with shooters. Though we didn't really struggle, the offense noticeably bogs down with them and their lack of shooting. I'd rather have SJ/RJ/Bolick/Wright/Heading/Jerom/Bahay. Heck, we can go with a non-PG like Arvin or Mason. JB/Kai/KQ can be the hub.
    Yes, Kai needs to improve his pick and roll defense (if he's able to do that while being somewhere around a 20/10 guy in the B.League he may have a chance. Alot easier said than done though)
    Yes, we need another option at C. But who are feasible options? We have some tall Fil-fors in D1, if we can, maybe we can bring them in ASAP for a chance to get FIBA exempted (and be B.League eligible). Currently eligible maybe we can try Justin Arana.
    You guys didn't mention him much, but Justin Brownlee is still HIM (and still our clear cut best player)! But he's also going up there in age, JC too. Who are we going with next? Would Jalen Green ever consider? I like Ron Harper Jr, he plays a bit similar to JB too.
    I'm looking forward to seeing how they do against New Zealand.

    • @Kirie01
      @Kirie01 3 місяці тому +1

      Is Bolick willing to join the national team right now? Tho he has suited up for Gilas before, I also remember instances when he was invited to the pool, but he did not join. I hope they get Jerom once he gets healthy - would also be beneficial for him to raise his stock in the int’l scene (we don’t know if the previous interest from foreign teams is still there). Also RJ since he’s a good shooter and I recall naman his social media posts implying na he’s very willing to join Gilas.
      About FIBA exemption, I got the sense na ang kuripot mag-grant nito. 😅
      IMO Jalen Green would only consider the PH national team if he’s sure na there’s no hope for him to be in the US team. But right now he’s only in his early 20s and he’s kind of on their radar since he was a former MVP in Under-17.

    • @drewf89
      @drewf89 3 місяці тому

      @@Kirie01yeah valid point that not all of these players do want to play for Gilas.
      If we can't convince any fil-am to come over and hopefully get an exemption, who would you choose to be our 3rd center once JMF and Japeth are too old?
      Jalen Green, i'm not sure if he really is on team USA's radar. They have plenty of better options at both guard spots, young and old.

    • @bolerosph
      @bolerosph  3 місяці тому +1

      As much as i agree with Scottie's lack of shooting, i still think he's needed for his perimeter defense and understanding of the offense. He's so flexible that Tim Cone loves using him in multiple ways (high post, screener, etc). CJ yeah, we'll be better off getting a guard with better shooting
      And yes, same observation with center depth. Outside of AJ, Kai, and JMF, big drop off na both interms of height and quality. One of them gets injured and we're looking at a lot of small ball lineups - Gab

      @bolerosph  3 місяці тому +1

      With who we're going to next, i don't think we have to look far. Ange Kouame is still young and able! Haha (biased obviously). We lack depth at center and our other naturalized player is a center hehe - Gab

    • @drewf89
      @drewf89 3 місяці тому

      @bolerosph I love Ange but I don't think he's the guy if we want to make it to the Olympics. AIMO our best locals are bigs (Kai and AJ). I would prefer a wing or combo forward for more versatility. And I think we need a go-to guy we can just dump the ball to if the offense bogs down.
      As for Scottie as a POA defender - I almost forgot about Rhenz (given [and rooting for] a full recovery), he did well as a POA defender in the WC and can shoot pretty well!

    Grass root won't work, it's a good idea but we're not Japan. Meaning if we really want to integrate it like Japan, our whole country needs to be like Japan which is impossible. The Philippines needs to change the whole education system, the government, heck the whole society itself. The Japanese education system for example teaches students character development early while Philippines jump straight to academic curriculum meaning students are more disciplined. The Japanese society are mostly not self-centred and still leans towards patriotism and respect to traditional Japanese culture quite the opposite of what Philippines is right now, we are too westernized if it makes sense. Philippines have a lot of talent when it comes to basketball but not all fits the system of CTC, that's why he chose these players. If my comment makes no sense to you guys just ignore me😄
