Hey everyone! The next video in the series just came out, and we'll explore the idea that some of you suggested in the comments- "What if Christopher Nolan made a Godzilla movie?" ua-cam.com/video/8JfmK2GHJCE/v-deo.html
As a Japanese raised in the U.S., I have some deep feeling to see such an historical films born in both countries focusing on Atomic bomb from each end. I feel both titles add up and makes one message for human beings against nuke weopons. For me, these two titles are collaboration of U.S and Japan on a same issue. People can create horror, but they also can overcome. People make mistake over and over, but need to go on.
As crazy as all this sounds, I really like the idea of Oppenheimer and Godzilla: Minus One being connected. It's interesting, because it takes that final scene of Oppenheimer pondering the horrors his invention would bring in a real world scenario and switches it over to something that's out of this world but also apt, considering Godzilla's origins.
All things considered its not like Oppy went there himself, I think it just adds to the horror and disgust, that the people who built and chose to drop the bomb are so safely tucked away on the other side of the world while they test run this thing that has power never been seen before. Makes more sense then how he was the only one concerned that that power is going to run unchecked because of his ambition. While everyone was high on its potential regardless of the blood on their hands.
I saw Oppenheimer the first week it was out and I just saw Godzilla -1 and had the same thought that these movies were complementary. Their themes overlap beautifully as mirrors. Just my thoughts: they’re both about the profound consequences of choice. Oppenheimer chose death/destruction and the movie wasn’t just about the making of the atomic bomb - it was profoundly about how it was a mistake and a choice that leads destruction of everything he loves (and destroying life that could be). Oppenheimer watched his life fall apart and his significance fade. In Godzilla -1, Koichi struggles with his choice for life and it’s about accepting that choice in the face of the horrors he witnessed and loss he went through. Choosing life isn’t a mistake - In the end, his choice to live gave him love and significance. They are both beautifully done and anti-war films that I highly recommend seeing back-to-back.
The scariest thing is that when Oppenheimer mentioned the chain reaction, he was referring to the idea of humanity's weaponry outpacing what it's capable of surviving. But the 'chain reaction' was instead, what would lead to Gojira, a being of pure hatred and rage with the power the slaughter mankind, for whom not even death can stop. No matter what happens, no matter what we do, without some kind of intervention from a being of equal power and will, we are doomed beyond all repair. He did not become Death. He created it. Horrifying.
I mean, technically the events in Oppenheimer had to have happened in the canon of every Godzilla movie ever made since Goji's always affected by the bomb. So, in that regard, Minus One really is a canonical sequel to Oppenheimer. The Oppenheimer movie actually happened before the events in Minus One which is wild to think about.
@TWDub "Accepted official collection of works." Okay, but accepted by who exactly? When you break it down, the term "canon" is a loose one, and I'm just using that word as it's commonly used by many people on the internet today. All words are made up, and they change meaning over time, so why feel the need to type out a whole paragraph criticising my use of the word "canon?" With that much free time, you should write a book or something. Get off your high horse, buddy.
@TWDubUnless Toho or Legendary officiate lore that the bomb was developed by someone else other than the US and The Manhattan project, it's pretty much canon.
@TWDub cannon can be any collection of works related to any arbitrary subject. both godzilla and oppenheimer are cannon to the human mythos of the nuclear bomb. everyone accepts godzilla as a valid symbolic representation of the nuke, and everyone accepts oppenheimer as a major creator of the bomb. they are eternally entwined. when documenting the human artistic response to nukes, godzilla and oppenheimer are key figures.

Nolan could've done the craziest meta thing imaginable in the movie Oppenheimer, where he could've actually shot a scene of Oppie watching the godzilla movie in theatres.
While watching Oppenheimer, all I could think about is " I can't wait until Godzilla minus one!" If they were shown in the movie theater back to back, I would surely go.
I do think they rereleased Oppenheimer in theatres a few Weeks back for like a week. So it actually was possible to watch both back to back in theatres in some places.
Actually... it's kind of a trilogy. Nerdstalgic posted a video comparing "Oppenheimer" with Hayao Miyazaki's "The Wind Rises," which tells the story of the Japanese man who designed the Zero fighter plane, another man who's obsession for his goal blinded him to the consequences of his own creation. So, it's possible there is an interesting narrative line from "The Wind Rises," a studio Ghibli animated film, through Christopher Nolan's historical drama "Oppenheimer" culminating in the allegorical "Godzilla Minus One." That would be quite a movie marathon that's for sure.
This whole video reminds me of how the leaked Comicon teaser for the 2014 film had the audio of Oppenheimer's monologue playing over it, When it gets to the infamous "I am become death, destroyer of worlds" line, it first plays Godzilla's roar and gives it space before the line itself I think a fitting fan edit to tie the two films together should be closer to that. Instead of literal visions of Godzilla and his wrath, the tie in should be that that Oppenheimer's visions are punctuated by Minus One's rendition of Godzilla's roar, which is a slight edit of the original 1954 recordings The roar of the original film is often meant to convey a few things. Anger, pain, sadness, and loss. It is often used to punctuate, or overpower moments of sobering silence. Godzilla Minus One takes those same recordings and mixes them to be the loudest thing in the film in a certain scene (you know the one), demanding attention. You don't get the time to process what happens prior, all you can focus on is the deep,, reverberating, and violent cry of the creature, much like how a bomb does not give you the chance to process what has or will happen, commanding all of your focus on singlular, terrible present I think having it there would be a perfect representation of Oppenheimer's fears and guilt, and how heavily they clearly weighed on him when you see footage of the man himself
The fact that the atomic breath damaged Godzilla is really interesting because you could interpret it as saying that, not only does the atomic bomb devastate those it is used on, but it also takes a toll on the user, just like it did to Oppenheimer
I agree. Just because godzilla isn't a real monster it doesn't mean that these two movies don't directly relate to one another and carry on the same story
Oppenheimer could be implemented in the MinusOne sequel especially if they base it off the 1954 Godzilla. I could see them doing a more "Oppenheimer" approach to Dr.Serizawa's Oxygen Destroyer and maybe even enlisting the real life Oppenheimer for help with the moral decisions weighing on the characters. Hell just get Cillian Murphy to reprise his role and cameo that shit😂
@@Emerald501st what about Oppenheimer: Minus 4 ( 0: So Japan would be at zero again after surviving Godzilla . -1: Godzilla Regenerated and reeks havoc again. - 2: Japan gets bombed again in an attempt to kill Godzilla -3: Oppenheimer and Dr. Serizawa invent the oxygen destroyer thus creating controversy and other countries stealing its technology and weaponizing it for their own gain. -4 After successfully killing Godzilla the world goes into chaos as the Oxygen Destroyer is weaponized world wide causing a new age of death and destruction everywhere. ) It be great cuz audiences would just be so confused 😊
I've thought of this the second I saw the Minus One trailer. It fits perfectly. And I'm glad you put in ways more succinctly than I could. Great video.
Heck yes! I was just thinking how incredible it was that both of these movies came out in the same year, in fact I had thought with the Barbenheimer event this summer; I couldn't help but imagine an alternate 2023 summer movie blockbuster line-up and instead it would've been "GODDENHEIMER" or "OPPENZILLA" (mash-up title is w.i.p.) How incredible that would've been to have Godzilla Minus One hyped up as much as Barbie was and it would've gotten the massive attention it deserved but more importantly the reminder of the destruction that Oppenheimer's creation caused (beyond just the 6:50 scene) Anyway, thanks for making this video and glad to know you were thinking this!!
I can say the same thing for all the studio Ghibli movies that take place in WW2 like Porco Rosso, The Wind Rises, The Boy and The Heroin and The Grave of the Fireflies. All depict more of Japanese (and Italian) life during this era in world history.
Does anyone know if J Robert Oppenheimer saw Godzilla? Like the original came out in 1954 so it's really possible he watched it or at least heard about it. If so, I wonder how he reacted and what he thought about it. That the japanese basically made a movie about a fleshly reincarnation of his deadly creation, as a giant, destructive creature. Id like to know that as much, as Id love to see a movie-Oppenheimer being confronted with Godzilla.
It's already the sequel in my mind. I love this so much. Godzilla was created from the Atomic age wasn't he. All these movies of the west under Nuclear attack, the day after and threads. Well Japan lived through it for real, and their horror became Godzilla.
ゴジラマイナスワンはオッペンハイマーの続編である。素晴らしい考察。外国人でこれに触れたのはこの人が初めてな気がする。 I saw the comment by Japanese,”Godzilla minus one is the answer from Japan to Oppenheimer in the US “. I’m so happy as Japanese because you’re the first foreign person who mentions the relationships between Oppenheimer and Godzilla minus one. The Oppenheimer movie has been temporarily canceled screening in Japan, but it is supposed to screen next year. Your thoughtful opinion makes me go watch Oppenheimer.
Each one of us have the right to make the dots connect. Both movies are really good. A bit like some people think that human drama in Godzilla minus one is boring. Far from it. It is the soul of the movie. Without it Godzilla just become another big monster movie. The connexion between the two movies is a bit far fetched. The drama side of both of them is what made them special. Oppenheimer, Godzilla minus one and killers of the flower moon are the three best movies of 2023. Moving us into human drama, hopefully there will be more in 2024 instead of the empty super heroes movies.
G-1 is a sequel to Oppenheimer cause if it weren't for the real-life Oppenheimer (and all other scientists involved), Godzilla wouldn't exist as a film franchise or a monster within canon.
Such a thoughtful and brilliant idea. I was thinking about it too with my younger brother after watching Minus One. If you think about it, Oppenheimer created the atom bomb, which led to Godzilla’s creation. A cycle of terror that humans created…
Been thinking Jaws could be connected too. Godzilla could’ve brought Jaws a megalodon up with the other deep sea ancient creatures after he got irradiated and jaws could have got forced to go towards amity island. Quint was even apart of the team that brought the bomb to Japan and his ship got attacked by kamikaze.
This certainly is an interesting "What If..." I cannot imagine what Hiroshima and Nagasaki survivors felt when they saw the original 1954 Gojira or if any survivors alive today would think of Oppenheimer or Godzilla Minus One.
Well he did make the bomb that made Godzilla I dont know if the movies are in the same universe But he proably exists in the Godzilla minus one universe too
I agree, both godzilla minus one and oppenheimer are incredible movies that works so well together, and watching godzilla minus one after oppenheimer really makes it feel like a direct sequel, great video.
fun fact ,most weapons that godzilla fights in g-1.0 are ww2 era japanise military tech from the tanks to the ships while in the original gojira the tanks that ataked godzilla were american m24 chaffee light recon tanks in g-1.0 the tanks that atack godzilla in the city sections when they are prezent are japanise tipe 97 chi ha tanks
I was finally able to see this movie. I saw the monochrome version and want to see it in color. I appreciate this interpretation of both movies (although I have not seen Oppenheimer--I seldom see movies).
Personally, I cannot think of Godzilla minus one as a sequel to Oppenheimer, however I do agree that they are both telling a similar story from different points of view and with different techniques and both belong in the same conversation.
Someone needs to do a super cut edit putting each Oppenheimer and Godzilla Minus One scenes in chronological order, would be interesting. The movie would begin with most of Oppenheimer pre-war timeline, then go to Godzilla, interchanging scenes with Oppenheimer post-war scenes, then ending with Oppenheimer Cold War timeline, with Oppenheimer final scene where they talk about the chain reaction that would end the world, interchanging with Godzilla's heart regenerating at the end. Would be DOPE.
Why not you make it happen and put on UA-cam ? ( its possible Will take time and the first edit probaly Will not gain views instant but at least you tried.)
In terms of continuity yes! Godzilla minus one IS A DIRECT SEQUEL! In the movie the bomb testings literally transform Godzilla in the movie after the encounter on Odo Island. Openhimer is the father of two monsters, the bomb and Godzilla: and living as the embodiment of moral confliction, while revealing how wicked and sinful humans are. But the ending of Godzilla minus one is also about redemption. I can go on about this too, I said immeditly when this movie was releasing trailers, this was the direct sequel. Did Christopher Nolan do this on purpose with the way he directed Openhemie with coordinating with Toho ?
The transition from historical to surreal is a very great idea, especially one which conveys the same message but in a more myth form. An example which comes to mind is Call of Duty World at War, after you finish the singleplayer story through various costly battles of World War 2, you end the historical WW2 segment of the game and it puts you into a destroyed building, with undead German soldiers coming towards you, but weirdly enough it is no scarier than the events you had already played through in the singleplayer, both the zombies and the story missions are horrifying, the only difference is that the story missions were based on reality.
Metroid prime trilogy has similar motifs. Samus destroys a heavily mutated creature. Alas instead of dying this creature merges with pieces of samus. By the 3rd game this amalgamation of mutated creatures attempts to spread a highly radioactive substance to all lifeforms.
Good vid. Minus One is an Oppenheimer sequel; been saying it since September. One thing to add: while Minus One is more optimistic than Oppenheimer, the ending shows Noriko seemingly infected by Godzilla sickness, or something of the sort, & Big-G himself alive (dead flesh doesn't grow & heal). It shows that while we have our victories, terror & horror are always around the corner. Oppenheimer was good, but Minus One was great. Both were striking horror films (horror being about evil, not "sp00ky"). Godzenheimer, baby!
If Godzilla minus one ever gets a sequel I hope they reference Oppenheimer's distress over indirectly creating the destroyer of worlds with a newspaper clip or something, he had almost 20 years before his death to react to the events of godzilla
But minus one goji is getting a sequel tho, it was teased by the black dorsal plates forming on the main character’s gf’s back and Godzilla’s body was regenerating while sinking back down to the ocean floor
The fact that you’re making this theory makes me laugh 😂 I just saw both movies for the first time this last Sunday on Christmas Eve. At 10:30am I saw Godzilla minus one at my local movie theater. At 5pm I rented Oppenheimer and saw it on the Apple + App I would never had thought of making a connection between both. But I will admit, there is a nuclear ☢️ connection between both 🦖 😂 of them. Even though both movies are classified differently, I throughly enjoyed both storylines.

fun fact ,most weapons that godzilla fights in g-1.0 are ww2 era japanise military tech
from the tanks to the ships
while in the original gojira the tanks that ataked godzilla were american m24 chaffee light recon tanks
in g-1.0 the tanks that atack godzilla in the city sections when they are prezent are japanise tipe 97 chi ha tanks
You could also make the argument that Fukushima 50 is a prequel to Shin Godzilla
I'mma have to do a double-feature at home some day, Oppenzilla! Maybe with that monochrome version of Minus One
When Minus One comes out on digital/blu ray, I'm DEFINITELY doing this too!
I was finally able to see this movie. I saw the monochrome version and want to see it in color. I appreciate this interpretation of both movies (although I have not seen Oppenheimer--I seldom see movies).
honestly, if we get like, a documentary about the production of the very first godzilla movie, i would be totally down with that!
It’s an interesting way to look at it. Oh Godzilla has another name to the Norse? Jormungandr
Every Godzilla movie is an Oppenheimer sequel.
I joked about this a few months back when the trailer first aired, but after watching the film, this is pretty much true lol
I know this is out of nowhere but I want christopher nolans next film to be here me out "the never ending story"
Personally, I cannot think of Godzilla minus one as a sequel to Oppenheimer, however I do agree that they are both telling a similar story from different points of view and with different techniques and both belong in the same conversation.
As a Lifelong Godzilla fan I gotta say not knowing your history with the franchise you really understand the themes of what Godzilla is
I Agree with you... After watch oppenhaimer, it's perfect to watch Godzilla Minue One
It’s crazy we got both movies in the same year 😂
I would believe it
In terms of continuity yes!
Been trying to convince my family of this for about three weeks. They’re tired of hearing it 😂
Well we know it’s not a sequel to Oppenheimer, but it’s to fun and dare I say extremely significant to consider it as such.
Like that kid in Heavyweights said, “This pleases me”
Heavyweights is the best
Bro thought he became death and the Destroyer of Worlds........he just wake it up from the Deepest darkness of our world 💀
Metroid prime trilogy has similar motifs.
I mean with that logic u can attach it to most the other films
If Godzilla minus one ever gets a sequel I hope they reference Oppenheimer's distress over indirectly creating the destroyer of worlds with a newspaper clip or something, he had almost 20 years before his death to react to the events of godzilla
Godzilla -1.0: The answer to the question:"If Oppenheimer so good, where's Oppenheimer 2?"
But minus one goji is getting a sequel tho, it was teased by the black dorsal plates forming on the main character’s gf’s back and Godzilla’s body was regenerating while sinking back down to the ocean floor
The fact that you’re making this theory makes me laugh 😂
I just saw both movies for the first time this last Sunday on Christmas Eve.
At 10:30am I saw Godzilla minus one at my local movie theater.
At 5pm I rented Oppenheimer and saw it on the Apple + App
I would never had thought of making a connection between both. But I will admit, there is a nuclear ☢️ connection between both 🦖 😂 of them.
Even though both movies are classified differently, I throughly enjoyed both storylines.
If it weren't for Oppenheimer, Godzilla would've remained a normal sized 2 million year old lizard without nuclear and radiation powers.
M-my Le bomb ...created a giant ass dinosaur that can make explosions as strong as my Le bomb?
I mean storywise it is not technically wrong.
