Hi, I'm Sally Gordon of the Murmaids! Thanks for all your great comments. I have always been moved by the same comments from soldiers who were fighting in the Vietnam War, who also appreciated the innocence conveyed by us and the music. Please note that the group was re-formed many times with different combinations of singers, that's why you are seeing different people in the photographs here! The original group is the phone shown on the CD cover in yellow.

@@TheDonnalovesmusic you're absolutely right about that, the 60s and 70s and even the '80s had it all. Motown, the beatles, an instrumental, a reggae before we knew the word, The beach boys, and glen Campbell all in the same top 10 in the same week, with a Frank Sinatra and a Louis Armstrong thrown in for good measure, what a musical rainbow we had!

As a 70 y.o,this song encapsulates our high school years of adolescence at its best. The lyrics and melody take you back to our days of innocence, no responsibility, letter jackets, and the only thing important was having a girlfriend or boyfriend. Ah, to be 16 years old again. Thank you Murmaids for giving us a taste of the years back then.

If you come up with that time machine please give me a shout, I've got to go back! Had a Long life, lots if good and great times and lots of not so good times. I'd give Anything to go back!! I recently found out while doing some ongoing searching for my first love when I was 14 and then 15. She would come in to visit her grandmother who lived down block from me. Although a very short time we spent over 2 summers I could Never Forget her!! Over my lifetime and having my own family I wkukd periodically think of her and over the recent years tried looking her up to no avail since her name wouldve changed. But about 5 months ago I tried again and for some strange and heartbreaking reason she must've guided me to her, for what j found was what I wished I wouldn't have! It was her obituary, she passed away 1 month before I finally found her. Heartbroken as I just wanted to see how she was and that she had a good life. Just to share stories and photos if even just by emails, just had to talk to her or contact her one more time as we drifted apart way back when, about 50 years ago and were too young to find each other and our lives moved onto separate paths. Just wanted to let her know I NEVER STOPPED,,, thinking about her! What I would do for that time machine right about now,,, . If I never wouldve found her as I wished I hadn't, in my mind she may still be here and at least the thought I still may find her and we could casually connect and fill that open void I was carrying for most my life. But now it's a long time past memory that will never be again. Sad!

She was a junior. He was a senior. In the early part of the school year, he asked her to go steady. She said yes, and he placed his letter sweater around her shoulders.
He played football. She cheered him on (even though he spent a lot of time on the bench). She loved that he was a great dancer. They rarely missed dances or sock hops. "Popsicles and Icicles" was *their* song.
They would break up toward the end of the school year, and the letter sweater would go back into his wardrobe. Hearts mended, and they moved on with life. They are in their 70s now and still friends. Yes, just friends. But this song is still special to them. Not romantic; just special.
She's so thankful to have lived in that era.

Just turned 76 in 2024. I was 15 when this was released in 63 and I loved it deeply then for its own sake and for the fact that I had my first real girlfriend that year and we both loved it. By the way I'm surprised there's so many dudes commenting on here I thought I'd be a loner but I guess this thing transcends such things. And as regards your comment about singing beautifully, back then you actually had to be able to sing to call yourself a singer. Although eventually I would have to capitulate a bit because I began to like Bob Dylan around 1965 and then of course Rod Stewart who still can't sing with the shit but he sure has Soulful delivery. "If I listened long enough to you". Coincidentally that song was popular during the Carnage of my first marriage and will always remind me I'm listening to the lies of my then wife. Not wanting to believe. But I guess I'm rambling now, so adios.

Maria Beltran; thank you for your kind comment. It was an innocent time--kind of like the Rockwell paintings of America...but President Kennedy was assassinated when I was a HIgh School sophomore. Then Vietnam started drafting our HIgh School seniors. I went to college while my neighborhood buddies were going to Vietnam. Soon some of those buddies weren't coming home. I quit college before my senior year and enlisted in the Marine Corps. The sweet innocence was soon lost forever for our generation. Maybe the reason this music is so powerful to me, for sure...I am sorry if I have said too much, especially after your warm comment...

Saturday nights were special when boy and girl shared a malt at the shop and enjoyed each other instead of texting, of course cell phones were not around then. Many of the electronic toys that have come out in the last 40 years have ruined dating and face to face interaction. How we regressed since that golden era.

Hi, I'm Sally Gordon, who sang the high part. How we ended up singing together is a funny story. Actually we weren't friends, despite what the publicity blurb that's always quoted. Terry and I were seniors in high school and sang in the choir. We had a mutual friend named Susie who called me one afternoon to ask if I would fill in for her at a recording session because her mother wanted her to stay home and do the ironing! I went in her place and met Carol for the first time. We sang back-up for Kim Fowley (you can find the song on UA-cam - it's called Astrology where I sing the solo) who liked our sound and introduced us to the woman who owned Chattahoochee Records who was looking for a girl group. She signed us. We recorded Popsicles and I went away to college in the fall. The song was released in the Spring of 1963 (not December) but nothing happened until a DJ in San Francisco promoted it and it became a hit in November, I think. When I went back to LA for Christmas vacation, we recorded an album, which stayed in a vault for a long, long time! None of us ever saw a penny from this hit! The group was re-formed several times with different combinations of singers.

I don't know if there is such a thing as magic but if there is, then music must be magic. Nothing, but nothing can transport you back to a place and the time, and an actual feeling that can only be described as how you would feel at that time washes over you. Not Nostalgia from as you listen to it 60 years later, but the actual feeling of being in the middle of everything that was going on at the time, who you knew, who your friends were, what was going on in the world, going on at school, all of the other music at the time, what car you drove, what car other people drove in high school, every bit of detail seems to come from the widely spaced dispersed synapses in my brain all brought to bear in the singular moment of listening to a single song such as this; and it all happens automatically.

Now , I am not approved by any means having fully embraced the sixties as I was 19 in 1967 nor am I a religious man, though I do believe in a God of sorts, but I am shocked and appalled by much of today's culture. Compare these three girls singing live on a stage with a modern performance by a female singer or girl group with what amounts to a strip show with dry humping dancers and all manner of Over the Top explicit sexuality. As I said I am not a prude. But I don't believe the stage is the place for such things. One's own bedroom maybe, but not public displays.
