You did an outstanding job of keeping the saw LEVEL along the ground line, Dan. It is very difficult to do that, and use of the plastic wedges was a good idea, too. I've seen a lot of guys who REALLY bury their chain in the dirt when cutting stumps to ground level, because they dig into the ground accidentally.
Thanks Obie...I surprised myself with how it went actually. Yeah lil Boss Man has been busy cleaning up the yard of all the branches that came down during Winter.
My dad and I put old chains on all the time to cut down stumps. I've got a couple old chains specifically for cutting in the dirt. There's still a lot of good firewood in them stumps. Stay safe my friend
If you had many more to do, i would recommend a carbide chain. They do cut slower, and loosen up more. That being said, they dont get dull for a long and are great for dirty wood.
Doesn't make much of a difference unless you actually rinse the dirt off after digging around it. The dirts attached to the Stump where the dirt was resting at ground level. Same reason why cutting roots dulls the chain when trying to remove a Stump. It may have a slight benefit. But when u weigh out the time it takes doing it vs just giving her the beans and sharpening the saw after which ull have to do either way. Mise well just cut it as low as possible and call it a day.
Looks like a good exercise for learning how to re-sharpen the chain. There are cases like yours when you have to sacrifice a chain to get the stumps out of your way. I enjoy your videos and look forward to viewing the progress on the new structure. Keep up the good jobs.
That’s what I save my old chains for. Unfortunately at my place they had animal runs and fence around the fields. I’m still finding the 100 year old barb wire. The best is when you find it with a brand new chain! 😩
I looked to see if anyone mentioned this: You can rent a stump grinder from Home Depot. It will remove the tree stump below ground level. They have big carbide teeth which you dont have to sharpen. If you cut the stump just above dirt level with your saw and then use the stump grinder to take below ground level. Rental is about $250 for a day.
I'm gonna see how it goes without having to grind them down...I thought about renting or getting someone to do it, but then thought a new chain is a lot cheaper...lol
Be sure to mark where those stumps are, so when you go to put your new building in, you do not have to hassle with trying to stake the building down through one or more of them! HA HA
I suppose the fellow who felled those trees figured you would push the stumps out with a tractor or bulldozer....at least he was smart enough not to ruin his chain messing with cutting them off flush! HA HA
If you ever want to take them stumps down farther just drill some holes pour some used motor oil on them then build a fire on top than burn them that's what I do.
I think you forgot to read your manual. Two hands with one behind the break. This way, if you hit something and it kicks/back. You can stop it. Personal I like pausing, to add sticks to keep the cut open and weight off the bar. I also like to dress an older bar and use an older chain close to the end of its life. Lastly, the one looked like you were cutting below ground level but also appears to be on the edge of a ditch. So that's open to debate. Cutting below ground is not recommended.
A few of the shots the angle made it look worse than it was, also it wasn't as bad as it seemed due to there being a few inches of wood chips on the ground that I put down last year...granted there was still a little dirt but it went better than I thought it would.
hi there , OH just go out and buy a dozen new chains , its your money not mine , can we call you stumpy now , or even better stump less . . well i think you did a great job , well done john
Hahahaha...Stump-Less. That might just catch on! Yeah if I can't get the edge back on this chain it'll just be saved for the next time I need to buzz a stump off.
I have a suggestion or you know suggestions are always you get what you pay for nothing. I would buy a couple bags of coal. The easy start stuff cut a ring around a metal barrel and start a fire right? On top of each one of them and just let them burn down in and kill. The roots suggestion done it a million times and it does work. I kind of kinda don't like the idea of the twigs that start growing back and that you have to keep cutting off Mr. Suggestion told you that. Ha ha
I am well aware this is the easiest and cheapest route for stump removal. But you won't need me to remind you of this because your back/spine will every time you run one over with the tractor from this day forward. 😅 Mulch will just hide them...
Hate to tell you guys but this is not stump removal, stump shortening at best. Still gonna remind you everytime you drive over it or try to stack something on it
Kinda dim saying don't do this with a new chain in the title. Especially if you're in a business that does this for a living......... There are chains designed for all kinds of work. And other equipment as well.
I'm not sure you fully understand chains & chainsaws. You wouldn't want to use a new chain in an instance like this because hitting the dirt dulls it and takes the edge off, you'd want to use an older chain that has already somewhat lost the edge...that's the point of the title.
Thats it! Lock him up! Section 555596 of the Stihl 500i abuse rules penal code, Maximum Violation Witnessed Here for the World to see! Shame Shame!😂🪵👍🏼🇺🇸

Did a better job than I would have done! Little Boss Man has been helping out a lot lately.
Thanks Obie...I surprised myself with how it went actually. Yeah lil Boss Man has been busy cleaning up the yard of all the branches that came down during Winter.

Nice job on them stumps
What a great job!!!!👍👏🏻👏🏻
They say use your worst saw for stumps……..Glad to see that Stihl finally finding its purpose!
LMAO...I literally almost just spit my drink out reading this. Might be the best comment of the video so far!! 🤣🍻
🤣🤣👍
If you had many more to do, i would recommend a carbide chain. They do cut slower, and loosen up more. That being said, they dont get dull for a long and are great for dirty wood.
You did a masterful job.
I dig down around the stump to give the power head room and try to keep the bar out of the dirt. It’s time consuming but it’s worth the effort

This is the only reason I own semi-chisel chains. You did a great job don't cut yourself short!
Thanks...it was rough going on a few of them but overall actually went better than I thought it would.
Wow, talk about stumpville, got some good firewood out of them.
You did a great job!
That makes it look like a bigger area with the stumps gone. Old chains come in handy to use on stumps.
Looks like a good exercise for learning how to re-sharpen the chain. There are cases like yours when you have to sacrifice a chain to get the stumps out of your way. I enjoy your videos and look forward to viewing the progress on the new structure. Keep up the good jobs.
Thanks...yeah this chain is gonna need some work or may have to just be replaced, but I have a good supply of extra chains on hand.
@@Back40Firewood Chains are cheap, toss them if they get beat up
That one stump bottom would make a Kool table top
You actually did a pretty good job, I'm shocked! lol Keep up the great work.
Hahahaha...thanks! I was a bit surprised it went as well as it did myself...LOL
Nice video keep stepping and fetching 💪
That’s hard work.
I’ve used Epsom salt in the past with good results. Drill holes, fill with the Epsom salt and cover with a tarp and check monthly👍
Does not matter, you did a good job....
That’s what I use my poulan wild thing for!👍👍
Good video
The wood yard looks so different without the trees. 👏🏻
It really does...I've had to just sit down a few times and look around to take it all in how much has changed back there.
I hope you get a grapple bucket, it will melt it so much easier to move logs and brush piles.
Yes, a few old chains are great for this kind of work.. also, stumps burn hot and long too..😁👍
This chain wasn't in the 'old' category when I started....but it is now....hahahaha
That’s what I save my old chains for. Unfortunately at my place they had animal runs and fence around the fields. I’m still finding the 100 year old barb wire. The best is when you find it with a brand new chain! 😩
I always keep old chains for this type work or around a lot of fence wire.
If you have access to a garden hose try to wash the dirt off the stump to save the chain
Hey Wood Hounds 👍👍

Was there a escape plan? 😊 (👍)
I don’t think you could have shaved it any closer without being totally in the dirt.
What type of chains do you normally run on that saw?
Be sure to mark where those stumps are, so when you go to put your new building in, you do not have to hassle with trying to stake the building down through one or more of them! HA HA
If you cut with the top of the bar, it will pull wood chips INTO the cut and you won’t have to wedge the stump.
Example of how…
ua-cam.com/video/N-6cE42yUEc/v-deo.html
I’ve committed the ultimate crime and used a chainsaw carving out whole stumps out of the ground 😂
I'm looking forward to seeing you split those chunks. Will you still have to grind anything out for the new building?
Bill
I don't think I'll need to grind them down...or I should say, I hope I don't have to...lol
How about instead of a pole barn you put in 2 beach volleyball courts? Just an idea. You got the space!
Hahahaha...I'd take the beach but forget the volleyball...lol
I suppose the fellow who felled those trees figured you would push the stumps out with a tractor or bulldozer....at least he was smart enough not to ruin his chain messing with cutting them off flush! HA HA
pour about a 1/2 box of table salt on and around each stump and it will make them decay faster
Shifty boot 🥾 chips not fun at all but you got the stumps out of your way ❤😊👍
Yeah I think I'll have to just toss my socks...don't think the sawdust is coming out of them...hahahaha
I'm assuming you decided to rent a stump grinder instead of digging them out with an excavator?
If you ever want to take them stumps down farther just drill some holes pour some used motor oil on them then build a fire on top than burn them that's what I do.
That's not a bad idea...these Oak would take a lotta fire to burn out tho I'm afraid...lol
When it’s OPM doesn’t matter to much. OPM ( other peoples money ). Hahahaha
I'm down with OPM and OPP! Yeah...you know me!
@@Back40Firewood that’s good cause you can’t touch this
Todays video kids is what not to do 🤦🏻♂️. But at least it’s done now.

Still cheaper than paying to grind
Yes indeed, that's for sure.

That's not a bad idea...I know what ya mean about the little off shoots that come up around the stump.
I hate stump cutting, it takes forever and tears up your chains
True, that's why you dig around the stump and run a garden hose on it to clean the dirt. They still get dull anyway but not as bad
I am well aware this is the easiest and cheapest route for stump removal. But you won't need me to remind you of this because your back/spine will every time you run one over with the tractor from this day forward. 😅 Mulch will just hide them...
lol...that is a good point. I'm sure I'll get a reminder here and there...haha
Takes 20 years for that last bit to rot out
@hyzercreek It varies with species of tree and drainage of water in dirt in the area, but yes. Some can take a very long time!
Hate to tell you guys but this is not stump removal, stump shortening at best. Still gonna remind you everytime you drive over it or try to stack something on it
We'll see with a good layer of chips on top of them if they are noticeable...once a good bed of chips gets packed down doubt I'll be reminded much.
It is stump removal if you dig around the stump deep enough and hose the dirt off before cutting, so you cut below grade and shovel the dirt back on
You cut much lower than i cut...
I would have done a lot worse. My chains really love metal. If there is metal in it, it will be found.
