    Your final thought regarding problems is totally on the mark. It's good for us to remember that the only people who have no problems are the ones in the cemetery. They're a fact of life, big or small, so be thankful that you have them... until the day comes that you don't.🤙

    Aloha, Hawaii is by far the best place to live life 🌈 I am a transplant from New York City. I moved to Oahu 3 years ago. From my perspective and experience, the majority of Hawaii issues are often dwarfed in comparison by mainland problems. Hawaii is most known for high home prices and expensive goods. The most expensive state is California and New York. As for the rest of the issues, the mainland is a f-ing mess. I lived in NYC for 30 years and in Puerto Rico for 20 years. What makes Hawaii the best place to live is it’s people, culture and environment. Moving to Hawaii was the best decision I’ve ever made 🤙

    Travel outside? Great advice brotha! Born and raised in Wahiawa since 1964. When I moved to the mainland in ‘86 I realized how all of Hawaii was like a “small town.” Then as I started traveling for work (China/Europe) you then realize how small the US is, and even how small the world really is. People from all counties deal with the same basic issues and want the same goals for their ohana. TBH tho, brah da one thing that is uniquely Hawaii, more so than any other other people I’ve met so far, is da love of food! We love a good grind! No doubt loco food is da best, but even when find a ono bbq joint in Memphis or a Trattoria in Italy da feeling is da same!! Da same smile of joy when food comes out. Chee-hoo!😜🤙🏼

    The mainland is a very large and diverse place so it’s going to be different based on location. During college I was planning to move to the Seattle area but after graduating and scouting the place after a few visits it’s not cheaper than Hawaii at all and might even be harder. A few of my college classmates have moved there and still need to live with roommates and work 2 jobs to survive! When people say the mainland is cheap, they are referring to very rural parts of the country where opportunities are limited. My sister works for a hospital in a rural town so she has a high salary job while enjoying the low cost of living in a rural town but she is just the exception. Most people in rural towns don’t earn high salaries and would have to move to the city for it which comes at a higher cost of living.

    • @HelloFromHawaii
      @HelloFromHawaii  4 години тому

      I'm sure things are tough in Seattle. At least there are certain companies that could potentially pay high salaries to afford living there. Here, we don't have much. Military, government, and certain private sector jobs.

    I agree with your thoughts on racism. A lot has to do with the mindset of the person feeling slighted. Your note of others having preconceived notions or prejudices, is no doubt true. We all are guilty, for the most part, due to ignorance. I always start up conversations with strangers, whether near home or while traveling. I get that from my dad. People's eyes always brighten up when I mention being Hawaii born and raise, as my parents were. Once you get to Talking Story, both parties are enlightened, and preconceived notions fall away.
    BTW, I lived and worked half my life in Hawaii, before moving to the mainland. I find that the bigger divide among people, especially more recently, is along political lines.

    What cost less in hawaii is sales tax. 4% is low! And yes I consider the sales tax as a cost as a consumer. Compared to Vegas it’s 8% so the same priced item on Amazon we pay twice in taxes which adds up. Talking about cars try paying 8% on a 50k car compared to 4%
    Try compare cost of living between hawaii and California not to the mainland in general. California housing is crazy expensive too.

    It’s unscientific but I just do the eyeball test. My family and friends in Hawaii have never experienced a drive by shooting, a mass shooting, and being violently robbed on a train. My family on the U.S. mainland have experienced these events. Yes I know this can happen in Hawaii but knock on wood, it hasn’t happened to my family in Hawaii. In general, I have been scholastically more lolo and less in tune to US politics and news than my mainland relatives. Also In general, my Hawaii clan has less coin and a smaller hale than my mainland family but I feel way safer in Hawaii than in the mainland. Yes i know lots of stuff regarding people being normal people anywhere in the U.S. but it just feels like there are higher odds of shit hitting the fan in the mainland than in Hawaii for me.

    Wow you picked a tough one this time. I think you identified several things to be concerned about. Most locals just want to be left alone to live their lives. Growing up in Hawaii I had no idea we had no money. Life was good. But life catches up if you live like that. The GET is ridiculous . It shouldn't be on food or rent. Really tax on rent. Or limit it to rents over a certain amount. A local family barely getting by shouldn't be paying tax on their rent or food. Tourists pay hotel motel taxes so it wouldn't affect that. I don't want to mention racism as it is anywhere you want to find it. I chose not to look for it and turn the other cheek when I have to.

    Every time i visit the islands im always a little bit surprised that the cost of living isnt too far off from what im used to on the mainland. Its maybe a little bit more expensive for some things than others, but i think the big difference might be with the opportunities there are on the mainland are more plentiful. Wages might be slightly better and the cost of land is definitely better on the mainland.
    The thing that really gets me is the politics of hawaii have really gone down hill. I would like to move back at some point, but its not really something i want to deal with now. Ill keep my eye on things and maybe itll change at some point, but i am feeling very disgeartened for my home and whats going on there ...

    • @HelloFromHawaii
      @HelloFromHawaii  4 години тому +1

      Although the cost of living may not seem high, the wages aren't comparable to the mainland and so things just feel harder. I'd also like to see local politics get stronger. I think that has more to do with locals paying attention and getting involved than anything else. Hard to pay attention to local politics when people have to work 2-3 jobs.

    • @JustScuzzy
      @JustScuzzy 3 години тому

      @@HelloFromHawaii yea, that's what I meant by opportunities. I think the combination of lower wages overall and the highest real estate value really makes it hard for people to live, especially when it's mostly service industry jobs.
      I've been thinking about that issue for a while and I don't really know if there are good solutions without doing massive wealth redistribution across the US. But one idea I have is a tourist tax. Idk how best to implement but it could be that any purchase is taxed higher and local people just show I'd to be exempt from it, or certain activities or services are taxed higher. Then maybe use that tax revenue to support working class locals so that they can continue living and doing the service jobs that support the tourist industry. I know there is something like that in place, but as far as I know it is just a blanket taxes for everyone. And I know some business offer a local discount. Well why not legislate that and make it something for all locals to benefit from. I think it used to be that locals would be supported by the tourist industry just from proximity or selling their goods or services to the tourists. But it doesn't seem like that benefit is there as much. I don't know, it's a complicated issue with no easy answers.

    I've lived both on Hawaii (All over Oahu, Hilo & now Makawao Maui) and the mainland (California, Las Vegas, Texas & Georgia) & I'd have to say Hawaii has it harder because of our geographical isolation and governmental corruption (California is worst though). Like my guy Kamaka Dias told my girl Mrs. Andria Tupola on his "Keep it Aloha" podcast last year, "Hawaii always gets the short end of the stick because of our one party politics and politicians". Also, racism isn't a mainland problem, it's a political problem because the democrats/left make it a problem to keep everyone divided. Racism is prevalent in Hawaii and not any better than the mainland. The island mentality is toxic and perpetuates ignorance and stagnation. Local food is great, but come on, Calrose rice is found everywhere in the mainland. And there are so many interesting and amazing foods to be found. Seriously, the Asian, Indo/Pak, Mexican, Cuban and Middle Eastern food scene is HUGE all over the mainland. When I'm there I never eat potatoes. And while everywhere people have problems, in the mainland you're more likely to find a job that pays you enough so you can live like an ADULT, on your own. You can purchase food, pay the rent, fill up the tank, go out to eat AND save money every month. Electricity is about a quarter of the price you pay in Hawaii. Gas is less than half. FOOD is less than half. The problems in Hawaii are mostly financial. which is by design. The over regulation, taxation and multiple layers of bureaucracy ads costs and controls on your life. A year and a half have passed since the Lahaina fires and less than a dozen homes have been rebuilt. That's by design, y'all. LA will be completely rebuilt before Lahaina is even half done. The pineapple and sugarcane fields may be gone, but the plantation economy and mindset are alive and well in Hawaii. Living in Hawaii is much harder than the mainland and other than the great weather, not worth it.

    Short answer: Hawaii is living life on the "Very Hard" difficulty with the oppressive state government who loves to tax the living being of all their residents from the poor to the rich. The mishandling and misappropriation of taxpayers' money of public projects and infrastructure have been a sore thumb to everyone's wallets and purses except for the politicians. An astronomical rise in cost of living and a low salary ceiling due to low skill labor and pool exacerbates the perpetual issue that have manifested in the state of Hawaii.
    The mainland have their intentional and forced divided mindset and their own set of problems. However, there are definitely safer neighborhoods who use common sense for all types of people. Personal wealth, stable families, and an actual single family home can be easily built in the mainland, but you will have to survey the city and state before diving head first before committing to live there long term.
