Great review. I was one of the first to get the Nest Hello doorbell when it came out and I've absolutely loved it for a few years now. But I've recently started having problems with it. Overall it works fine. Both audio and video are great. But the one problem it's started having is that when someone rings the doorbell, the video never shows up on my Google Hub displays. It just spins and eventually times out. But I have a good wifi connection and I can check the live video any time and it works great. It's only when someone actually rings the doorbell. So I can't see them or talk to them. So, I've started looking at alternatives. I've tried holding out for the next Gen Nest Hello to come out, but may have to bite the bullet and go with the Nest Battery doorbell or make the jump over to Ring because I have both Google Home and Alexa devices and displays in my house. Decisions, decisions.... Thanks again for such a comprehensive review!
It's not using your normal wifi. It creates wifi trough the homebase system. I've had problems with that . Even read you could possibly use a second homebase to create a better wifi spread
We had the Ring doorbell (good internet) and had the same problem with connecting to our phones. By the time we connected, the person detected had walked away!
Have same issues now too. Original Nest wired doorbell has become hard to rely on. Also the face recognition- which was never good - seems worse than ever too.
I'm about to move into an apartment in a college town to, well, complete my degree. Because of the sleek and non boxy design of the Nest, I believe it will be the best option for me. Especially since my unit doesn't have a doorbell at all!
I have the new wired nest camera. Once the free trial subscription period ends, the camera is pretty much useless. It may capture a 'still' of a person if you're lucy, but more often you catch their backside as they run off with your package. You're better off setting up a proper security camera hooked up to a DRV. About the same cost with no monthly subscription fees.

Good review. I got this over competitors due to the integration with Google/Nest displays and speakers My only concern is the lens protusion. I instructed a family member to remove my doorbell to charge it. Somehow they dropped it and now the lens is scrated from the floor. Even though the videos make it look easy, it needs a fiar amount of force to clip back into the bracket and hear the "click" which is possibly where it gets easy to drop (if someone doesnt clip it properly) I think the next iteration of the doorbell needs to hide the lens into the body a bit more!
I have a battery google nest doorbell and a google hub. I have tried everything they have said to do to get a chime, but the only thing that chimes is outside of the house and sends an alert to my phone but if I'm not paying attention to my phone at the time I miss the person at the door. I went into setting, I cant get it to chime on the hub either it just shows a video but there is no chime.
Have had these doorbells since launch. I’ve never had another smart doorbell so I don’t have much to compare them too, but I’m pretty disappointed sometimes. The video quality is great and I like the interface, it just has a few flaws that annoy my fiancé and I. Most time an event is triggered, it doesn’t start recording until halfway through or until the person is essentially already gone! I wish it could function to record 30 seconds before the event actually began so I can see the entirety of it! Also the face learning is not bad, but often times it gets it wrong and thinks one of my fiancé’s siblings is him or vice versa, and there’s not a way to confirm or deny if the face detection was correct. Just a way to add an unfamiliar face to the library. You can delete images from a face library, but it doesn’t seem like that’s specifically helping with machine learning, or am I wrong? Another thing is just annoyances with notifications, my fiancé and I often have our AirPods in and it will Siri will speak aloud when somebody is at the door, but if somebody is working outside or going in and out, which triggers the doorbell a lot, it gets really annoying when Siri interrupts what we are listening to every 30 seconds even though it’s the same person. We know there’s a “quite mode” feature but it really doesn’t always work for some reason. Overall though, I like the doorbell better than when we had nothing! It looks sleek, has acceptable machine learning with the person, animal, package detection, and the notifications come in pretty fast. Just kinda wish we waited and explored other options before purchasing right at launch.
After using it for a few months, I'm in love with the ring....and yes you can use your echo dots as ringbells, a bunch of different sounds are available! Enjoy!
Thx for the video! This is probably the next doorbell I am going with, after returning the Blink doorbell, which wasn't capable of transmitting audio to headphones (dealbreaker for me). Aestetics are definitely nice with this one (timeless), just like you mentioned. The rest out there looks kinda tr*shy and Ring Doorbell 4 (changeable faceplates) not available where I live.
We ended up exchanging this model for the slimmer version ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx0jZ_lGlDVJhDnmagEU8gn47cmfPNlLQU because it was too wide for the only door trim area that made sense to mount it on. However, we should have just noted the dimensions prior to purchasing. Otherwise, we love the doorbell. It works perfectly, and the video is very clear, even at night.
i have had this doorbell for 24 hopurs and love it, but i have come acrross to big issues 1 - from the nest displays i can talk to anyone at the door, but via my phone i have to almost swallow the mic for them to hear me (mic is fine for calls etc) 2- i have suddenly stopped revieving push notifications for people at my door. they have to press the button, (it is enabled in the app) otherwise i still recomend it

This doorbell is nothing but trouble if you expect it work properly when hardwired. The problems start if you live anywhere where you have near or below freezing winters. When wired the doorbell will not stay charged and eventually shutdown until it is charged inside via USB C. They never disclosed this at the onset of product launch and as such there is now a class action lawsuit against Google. -I am one of thousands of pissed off customers. Stay far far away unless you live in a warm climate.
I got mine installed for free when I got solar. It worked in the beginning- now I guess the battery has died! I was told to look one tube, and I got no info on it! And no charger. But I have arthritis & not much strength in my hands & can’t get it off! I’ll buy a battery- how do I get it open???

After that you just need a USB-C cable and you can charge it with anything (phone charger, PC, whatever). Plug the USB cable into the doorbell and charge it for at least 8 hrs
bro all the nest 2nd gen products are awesome. I love how cheap nest aware subscription is for 2nd gen devices. I wonder why gen 1 devices subscription cost more than double than gen 2. gen 2 nest aware easily competes with ring subscription prices.
Have you had the experience where even if you wire this doorbell model, the battery can continue to drain? And when it is drained, the doorbell becomes offline and you'll need to remove it from the wall to charge it back up (slowly over USB Type C). Whether there is due to high number of activities or cold weather, this is a serious design flaw I (thankfully) experienced early and was able to return this model to the store.

I have the Google Nest battery doorbell and, as of Nov 2023, there is a major bug where audio from the doorbell is sent to the headphone output rather than the speaker output on Android devices, meaning I can't hear the person at the door on my phone without plugging in headphones. This is happening on both my wife's and my Samsung phones and on my Chromebook, using the Google Home app.
2 Questions: 1. Does it start recording when movement triggers it? Or only when someone rings the door bell? I live on a busy street where cars and people go by all day long. 2. I would like to be able to see who's out there at my command only or when someone rings the bell. Is that possible with this Nest Doorbell?
Thank you for doing these videos! I really like how this doorbell integrates with my google assistant and speakers. My problem is releasing it from the mount to charge up the battery. I followed the instructions and used the release tool, the first time it worked fine. However, when I tried to remove it today to get it charged again, for the second time in two months, it wouldn't budge. Called on a handy neighbor and he could not remove it either, so he had to finally use tools to force it out. Any idea what could be the problem? I’d very much appreciate any advice. Thanks!

what are the options for actually hearing the doorbell ring? does it ring on your phone or is it through google speakers you have? Thinking of getting one of these but my family members aren't the most tech savvy and don't really use the google smart home stuff we have
So far I can't find a way to make it ring on my phone and I'm hating it! I have Ring at my other home and I love the way it chimes to let me know someone is there. If I can't find a fix for it soon I'm sending it back.
I have google home mini and it tells me when someone rings the door. But not when someone is just around the front. Only my phone does that but If they press it, it comes through my phone and the google home mini
does wiring it in eliminate the chime you get through the google home speakers? and since it's google would I be correct in thinking you can pick the tone it uses?

how many pretty thieves do you think there are who would buy a nest doorbell just to get the key just in the off chance they manage to find a nest doorbell which they can then sell without the bracket unless they use the one from the doorbell they bought, and also while hoping the people living there don't see the notification of them stealing the doorbell and catch them in the act, and while also covering their face from the camera
@@MF_JONES You can purchase this tool online without buying a nest doorbell or just use a flathead screwdriver according to Google's documentation. Once the doorbell is removed the frame can also be easily removed and quickly too. I doubt you would have time to react if someone does this while you are sleeping at night. It would be good if Google would provide a means to remotely lock the device, but I don't think that's currently an option.
I don't receive notifications on my droid phone. Google and or nest have not provided a solution. I have spent hours trouble shooting this with no success

I live in a 3 story town house and currently use just a Blink camera and dumb doorbell, so i'm looking to upgrade. Should I just get the Google Nest Doorbell (Battery), or the Google Nest Doorbell (Battery) and Google Nest Cam (Battery)? Also, can they be integraterd with Amazon Alexa's or are they only compatible with the Google Hub's?
Google Nest doorbell does work with Amazon Alexa but it's very limited as Amazon Ring and Google Nest are competitors. As far as using both the Nest doorbell and/or the Nest cam, I guess that would depend on how much coverage you would like for the front of your home. You can certainly use both pointed in different areas if you choose. Hope that helps.
You could but the video would be sideways when you look at it in the app. I don't think Google has a setting for setting it up in that orientation - Josh
@@6MonthsLater I got a replacement device - same issue. It appears that because I live on a busy street with a lot of vehicle traffic (low foot traffic), the camera is waking up almost 2000 times daily which is draining the battery. Hardwiring it instead might not work either since this camera uses trickle charging and the wakeup rates are too high (so battery will drain quicker than the charger being able to charge it). Lowering the triggering rate didn't help that much. Next option is to change the placement of the camera so it isn't directly pointing at the street and/or buy a new house ;). Neither of these is feasible so I might try getting a different doorbell. To be continued.
@@Mann.withtheplann Yes. Zoning affects just the notifications. It does not affect what the camera sees. The only setting that seemed to help was the sensitivity - changing it to the lowest setting gave me an additional couple of days.
Update - I returned this and will get the next generation of the wired Google Nest doorbell whenever they launch that in 2022. Hardwiring the battery version didn't help much as the power is used to trickle-charge the battery as opposed to powering the camera. The rate of discharging exceeded the rate of charging.
It’s not end to end encrypted apparently, as with any camera product with a live feed, my main advice is go with a product from a company you trust. - Josh
It doesn't bother you that every single one of your devices announce when the bell is rung? I have like 7 and it's excessive. No option to disable individual devices. Was hoping to find input on that after 6mo
No actually, I kinda want them all to ring so I don’t miss when someone is at the door. Perhaps instead of having the assistant talk to you there could just be an option for a chime or a chime on a specific device. I think they could definitely add that - Josh
So guys everyone talks about the 3 hours recording but not many reviews saying how it actually that works out. We understand 3 hours record but how is the process,3 hours,it fill up and then u need to delete it to be able to get recordings again? The last 3 hours from the last notification? It’ll start automatically deleting your old recordings once it fills up. So any you want to keep you’ll need to save to your phone or another device like a tablet. Hope that helps! let me know if you have any further questions. -Josh
Yes, it'll ring any Google speaker or display in your home. If you get a Nest Hub or Nest Hub Max, you can talk to the person outside your door and see who's at the door.
It's going to be very tough to find a small and sleek battery powered doorbell, they are either going to be long or very wide and boxy. I think the next choice in this shape is the best out of the other choices but that's just my opinion
If it only last about a month with 25-30 events, then that is terrible. I have used Eufy's video doorbell and with an average of 40 events a day it was lasting around 3-4 months.
25-30 triggers a day is ideal for apartment dwellers who’s cameras aren’t focused on a sidewalk or street. Far fewer trigger events. This will be great for me.
I bought this doorbell for my parents. OMG, it has been nothing but problems!! Don't buy!! It was hell to set up. Wouldn't connect to anything. Finally got it to work after more than 6 hours of factory resetting the device, resetting our phones, reinstalling Google Home and resetting the router - All that over and over, about 8 million times!! Then it turned out that it only rings ONCE on their Google Nest Mini! My parents are old and don't always hear too good. So they often miss the one single chime. And they don't notice alerts on their phones. One ring from the doorbell is all they get. Their visitors outside press the doorbell many times, but it will only ring ONCE inside on their Nest Mini in their living room. Totally insane, Google. Furthermore, we live in Scandinavia, where it's cold and freezing in the winter. And it turns out, that even if you wire up the doorbell, it will go completely dead when the temperature gets below zero degrees celsius. Even when wired up!! WTF, Google?!! Besides that, you can't use the build in camera for surveillance, because it can't record any more than 3 hours. Conclusion: Don't buy. This product is not even ready for beta testing. It's merely a prototype that needs to be further developed much, much more.

what are the options for actually hearing the doorbell ring? does it ring on your phone or is it through google speakers you have? Thinking of getting one of these but my family members aren't the most tech savvy and don't really use the google smart home stuff we have
So far I can't find a way to make it ring on my phone and I'm hating it! I have Ring at my other home and I love the way it chimes to let me know someone is there. If I can't find a fix for it soon I'm sending it back.
I have google home mini and it tells me when someone rings the door. But not when someone is just around the front. Only my phone does that but If they press it, it comes through my phone and the google home mini
does wiring it in eliminate the chime you get through the google home speakers? and since it's google would I be correct in thinking you can pick the tone it uses?

Nice from Google to provide a Nest removal tool which you can use to remove ANY Google Nest Doorbell. Smart.
how many pretty thieves do you think there are who would buy a nest doorbell just to get the key just in the off chance they manage to find a nest doorbell which they can then sell without the bracket unless they use the one from the doorbell they bought, and also while hoping the people living there don't see the notification of them stealing the doorbell and catch them in the act, and while also covering their face from the camera
@@MF_JONES You can purchase this tool online without buying a nest doorbell or just use a flathead screwdriver according to Google's documentation. Once the doorbell is removed the frame can also be easily removed and quickly too. I doubt you would have time to react if someone does this while you are sleeping at night. It would be good if Google would provide a means to remotely lock the device, but I don't think that's currently an option.

I don't receive notifications on my droid phone. Google and or nest have not provided a solution. I have spent hours trouble shooting this with no success

I want the doorbell to ring on my iphone, like using my iphone as the chime, but cant manage to do so. Video works, notifications work, but I cant make it ring on my iphone or ipads. Great review thank you. Is it worth having one of these in conjunction with a Google Nest Cam (Battery) covering the front of the house too? I live in a 3 story town house and currently use just a Blink camera and dumb doorbell, so i'm looking to upgrade. Should I just get the Google Nest Doorbell (Battery), or the Google Nest Doorbell (Battery) and Google Nest Cam (Battery)? Also, can they be integraterd with Amazon Alexa's or are they only compatible with the Google Hub's?
Google Nest doorbell does work with Amazon Alexa but it's very limited as Amazon Ring and Google Nest are competitors. As far as using both the Nest doorbell and/or the Nest cam, I guess that would depend on how much coverage you would like for the front of your home. You can certainly use both pointed in different areas if you choose. Hope that helps.

You could but the video would be sideways when you look at it in the app. I don't think Google has a setting for setting it up in that orientation - Josh

I get 5 days of battery life with mine. Just got it 2 weeks ago and have charged it to 100% twice. Will contact Google support to troubleshoot.
Let us know what they say, that battery life is definitely way too short!
@@6MonthsLater I got a replacement device - same issue. It appears that because I live on a busy street with a lot of vehicle traffic (low foot traffic), the camera is waking up almost 2000 times daily which is draining the battery. Hardwiring it instead might not work either since this camera uses trickle charging and the wakeup rates are too high (so battery will drain quicker than the charger being able to charge it). Lowering the triggering rate didn't help that much.
Next option is to change the placement of the camera so it isn't directly pointing at the street and/or buy a new house ;). Neither of these is feasible so I might try getting a different doorbell. To be continued.

@@Mann.withtheplann Yes. Zoning affects just the notifications. It does not affect what the camera sees.
The only setting that seemed to help was the sensitivity - changing it to the lowest setting gave me an additional couple of days.
Update - I returned this and will get the next generation of the wired Google Nest doorbell whenever they launch that in 2022.
Hardwiring the battery version didn't help much as the power is used to trickle-charge the battery as opposed to powering the camera. The rate of discharging exceeded the rate of charging.
Had to get a new modem so of had new wifi but now can’t connect my doorbell
I wonder what's the level of privacy your video have compared to ring doorbell or any other doorbells.

It doesn't bother you that every single one of your devices announce when the bell is rung? I have like 7 and it's excessive. No option to disable individual devices. Was hoping to find input on that after 6mo
No actually, I kinda want them all to ring so I don’t miss when someone is at the door. Perhaps instead of having the assistant talk to you there could just be an option for a chime or a chime on a specific device. I think they could definitely add that - Josh

So guys everyone talks about the 3 hours recording but not many reviews saying how it actually that works out.
We understand 3 hours record but how is the process,3 hours,it fill up and then u need to delete it to be able to get recordings again? The last 3 hours from the last notification? Sorry if can anyone clarify this

Yes, it'll ring any Google speaker or display in your home. If you get a Nest Hub or Nest Hub Max, you can talk to the person outside your door and see who's at the door.

If you have the correct removal tool, otherwise its very hard to pry off the baseplate.

It's too freaking big (long), at least it's fairly slim. But the size is the thing that has kept me from purchasing.
It's going to be very tough to find a small and sleek battery powered doorbell, they are either going to be long or very wide and boxy. I think the next choice in this shape is the best out of the other choices but that's just my opinion

If it only last about a month with 25-30 events, then that is terrible. I have used Eufy's video doorbell and with an average of 40 events a day it was lasting around 3-4 months.
25-30 triggers a day is ideal for apartment dwellers who’s cameras aren’t focused on a sidewalk or street. Far fewer trigger events. This will be great for me.
40 events a day? Do you have it mounted on a door from your local café? There are activity zones you can set up, you know that right?

Worst doorbell. So many issues. Returned and purchased eufy. Do yourself a favour and read online forums of all the unhappy customers.
I bought this doorbell for my parents. OMG, it has been nothing but problems!! Don't buy!!
It was hell to set up. Wouldn't connect to anything. Finally got it to work after more than 6 hours of factory resetting the device, resetting our phones, reinstalling Google Home and resetting the router - All that over and over, about 8 million times!!
Then it turned out that it only rings ONCE on their Google Nest Mini! My parents are old and don't always hear too good. So they often miss the one single chime. And they don't notice alerts on their phones. One ring from the doorbell is all they get. Their visitors outside press the doorbell many times, but it will only ring ONCE inside on their Nest Mini in their living room. Totally insane, Google.
Furthermore, we live in Scandinavia, where it's cold and freezing in the winter. And it turns out, that even if you wire up the doorbell, it will go completely dead when the temperature gets below zero degrees celsius. Even when wired up!! WTF, Google?!!
Besides that, you can't use the build in camera for surveillance, because it can't record any more than 3 hours.
Conclusion: Don't buy. This product is not even ready for beta testing. It's merely a prototype that needs to be further developed much, much more.
Literally ALL your "problems" are stated on their website.... do you even read about it before you buy? My god.
