Desiree, I love your take on the island house that y'all were staying at. Pretty rustic by our standards, but quaint and memorable if I was staying there. Your attitude is awesome. Jordan, you have a real 'keeper' there, Bud.
Your dealings will the locals makes me smile--always. People seem to be so friendly. Sometimes I feel like we live in a bubble in the U.S., sheltered from the rest of the world and all its beauty. Thank you guys so much for the world tour. I feel very privileged to be sharing it with you. Please pass the mojitos!

This is why I began traveling. Seeing the culture and the people of a place, knowing that they are human just like me and they have lives and struggles just as we do, but in turn, seeing their happiness and smiles and generosity. Slow travel, traveling with a purpose. Thank you for the glimpse behind the curtain into Cuba. I know when this video was created we were just again being allowed back into Cuba. Glad you both got in and out without a hassle and very happy to see this glimpse into the lives of locals.

This episode made me smile so much. I am not an overly emotional guy but loved the joy I could feel coming thru with the rock climbing, paying games at Raul's and receiving fresh ground coffee from your new found friends. Very touching episode. Glad I found your channel.

Hey Dylan!!!! Thanks for all of your comments and perspective!! And thanks for sticking up for us ;). Is Cuba on your bucketlist? Not too far from FL and the process of getting a visa to visit wasn't too bad! These guys explain it pretty well: www.mondovacilando.com/sailing-cuba-2017/. Thanks again for watching!! You're awesome!

    Sensational video!!!
You showed the real Cuba in a straightforward way I've never seen previously.
I fell in love with the Cuban community last fall after spending a month in Hialeah. Your hosts showed the roots of the great warmth and hospitality I enjoyed.
This video is what I hoped Project Atticus would reveal on your journey. Bravo!

Hey Paul!! That's so nice of you to say! Thanks for sticking with us through the refit! What brought you to Hialeah? I didn't realize it has the largest % of Cuban and Cuban Americans in the country! Neat! So cool you got to experience another culture without even leaving the states! I'm assuming you had some delicious food too, huh!!?

      Project Atticus
Did some emergency insurance adjusting for Irma victims. Just short term to help reduce backlog. My background is journalism.
A lot of my clients spoke little to no English but smiles and kindness can overcome a lot of that.
Five of my first 8 clients insisted I try their Cuban coffee. Impressive!
A bunch of my clients came over in 1994 but I had one lady who made daring passage in 1980. They all had tight families at their core. Great experience, and it encouraged me to start learning Spanish with the Duolingo app.
Enjoyed your live discussion on navigating Cuban laws. Agreed with your reasoning, too. Doubt I'd been as brave.

Great episode. My wife and I hiked those same trails years ago. The vibe in Vinales was so much better than Havana. And as you said, the people were the highlight for us. And the doggies.

Hey ScubaTony! Yes! Indeed! So much more my (Desiree) speed! Does Cozumel have a quiet side too? When Jordan & I went there it was only for an other night hop back to Isla Mujeres from Bahia De Ascension, and we were so surprised by the big, fancy stores! So much different thank Isla Mujeres! I wonder if Isla will develop as much as Cozumel in the coming years- what do you think? Also, Jordan is planning our trip back to Cuba; we're thinking of sailing to Cozumel to wait for a weather window to sail to Cuba from Cozumel. Are you going to be around in a month & a half? Would be great to meet in person!!

I recently stumbled onto your channel and am now watching all the videos from the beginning. You guys are awesome. I love that you guys are so real. This episode really shows how wonderful Cuba really is. I have been following Ryan Van Duzer's channel for years and he has biked across Cuba twice showing much the same side as you did. My sister is there right now. People often miss the best part of Cuba... the communities and people away from the tourist centers. The same could be said about Mexico. Thank you for sharing. Keep up the awesome videos and enjoy your adventures. I am excited to see where you take us next.

That cabin was an awesome find! The rock climbing? Scary. Such an awesome experience to be with and interact with a local family. We had an experience something like that with our children in Cuba, a man taking us on a carriage ride taking us to his home, that opened up our daughter's eyes to a wider world. It really changed her, for the good. We exchanged a big bag of clothes for a large bottle of freshly harvested honey.

Great video. It's too bad there is always someone whose jealousy gets in the way. I know what is like to live in a place like that and for this young man, Harold Steed, to compromise what you have worked so hard for, is plain jealousy. The video in itself, is very educational and also shows how the people are so friendly and accomodating. It was very well done.

Grade A adventure. It's like a time machine back to rural 1958 Cuba. Keep it rolling!!

    • @ProjectAtticus
      @ProjectAtticus  6 років тому

Hey Uncle Bob! True! That sewing machine we showed briefly was made in the 30's and is in great condition! It was fascinating to see the ingenuity employed by the locals to keep machinery and equipment up & running. I talked to a cruising couple who got some canvas work done while in cuba- he said they were so good at making fabric last, that the seamstress used the original holes from the initial assembly for the repair! He said it took twice the time! I wouldn't have the patience, but I might start to gain patience if sunbrella were difficult to come by!

    • @ProjectAtticus
      @ProjectAtticus  6 років тому

Hey KingCactus! Thanks!! We're getting spoiled because I (Desiree) speak Spanish. I need to start brushing up on other languages so that we can keep this up! I don't think it's necessary to speak a foreign language to truly connect with people from other cultures (I lived in a Nepalese community in India for 8 months, and the first 2 months didn't speak a WORD of Nepalese) but it is an added benefit! Anyways, thanks again for saying hi!!

Guys we enjoy your videos a lot we love your story and how down to earth and natural you guys are also feel identify because you both also started from the bottom and see you guys cruising now fulfill our hearts with hope and dreams unfortunately we still on the boatyard finishing the boat and saving for new sails our splashing day should be around May and our cruising destination still unknown but we always fantasize with the Caribbean hopefully one day we'll meet out there, by then you guys will have plenty of amazing stories to tell, till then we wish u guys Fair Winds and following Seas lots of lots of positive vibes 😃 opps btw great ideas about the subtitles

Project Atticus We are currently freezing our butts off in snowy CT. Our Mason 44 sailboat, Journey is on the hard for the winter in a cold, diy boatyard (definitely not Key West). Even in the cold, I enjoy spending a lot of my time plugging away on various projects that will ultimately allow us untie the lines again (hopefully next year).
Before Journey, I sailed an Allied Luders 33 (1966) for over 30 years. This included living aboard and cruising full time for a few years when my wife and I first married. While it wasn’t easy on that boat, it sure was a hell of a lot of fun.
With this history, you might understanding why I really appreciate and enjoy what you guys are doing. In many ways, it mirrors some of my own experiences. One huge difference though....your adventure is beautifully captured on film and shared with so many. Thank you.
Lastly, I know there must be a ton of interchangeable parts between your 30 and my old, out of commission 33. So if there anything on your Allied parts wish list, just let me know and perhaps I can help.

Hey Casanova... You guys are hitting it out of the park. Very, very cool video. I dont know if I would risk getting arrested though. Yall are Romancing the Stone, in Cuba.

Haha! Hey Pate Allan! Thanks for saying hi! Yeah it was a risky decision, and we were super anxious by the time we got back on the ferry to return to Atticus, haha!

Awesome video! I have to try to keep your names straight though. Jordan is bud and Desiree is bud-dy. I'm always getting your names confused and mixed around. 😃 You two are sooo good together. So happy you found each other. I'll be waiting in suspense for your next video. Thank you so much for what you do!!!

Hey Allen! Haha! Good point! Our nick names are ever evolving for each other! I think now we both call each other "Bud" which is hilarious because I think we're just morphing into one person on this small boat, haha! Jordan occasionally still calls me "cooks" or Desiree when he's really angry haha! Thanks for watching and saying hi!!

Hey Jessica! I'll have to ask Jordan for ya! Disclaimer though- he's in the middle of building a hard dodger for Atticus (bit.ly/buildingahardtop), so he's in a totally different mind set than that of video editing, so we might not get back to you for a couple of weeks. Sorry!!

Great channel guys! One piece of advice: if someone local shows you around the local rules authorities, don't put their faces and names in videos like this. You sail away but they stay there and you can easily get them in trouble for being friendly and helpful with you. You are fortunate to not know these kind of regimes but we have some experience in Central Europe. Be nice with those who were nice with you, don't expose them like this.

Beware of local laws. Good way to lose your boat and all of the time and work invested in it. Americans are famous for traveling to a foreign country and believing local laws do not apply to them. Not a good start. You may have gotten away with it. But don't be surprised if things go sour very quickly.

Okay, so here's the deal. Keep at least of two of those Cuban cigars aside for us and we will treat you two to a lobster dinner on the back side of Catalina Island when you two get over here. Deal? We will even throw in a few steaks for dinner. Hey, maybe in some lobster we catch.
