63 and my ears were open to these same two brothers. This is part of the soundtrack of my life, it’s planted in deep, that means the rest of my life I remember
Gil... I'm nearly in tears thinking about your contribution to this planet. This shot is for you and to the rest of us still in the struggle. Peace go with you brother...
I am a Black man , child of the seventies . This work is about my life . It always brings me to tears as I look back over my life , dealings , and mistreatment in AmeriKKKa . SMH
Joshua that's quite a comparison but I think you're either forgetting or you're unaware of the great Jalaludin Mansur Nuriddin, aka Jalal of the Last Poets. This incredible rapper (before the term became widely used in music) was the main voice behind the works of the Last Poets. Check their first 3 albums on Douglas, The Last Poets, This is madness and Chastisement (also his solo project "Hustlers Convention" from 1973) for the power and majesty of the spoken word and how it can be delivered to really say something relevant! Of course, the Poets were an influence on Gil's early years. Respect to the late great GSH.
I’m tempted to agree but I never lived through watergate, Vietnam, all the assassinations of civil rights leaders (mlk, x, the Kennedy bros, et al), the cultural revolution, etc etc I reckon the theretofore unprecedented nature of all that relentless shit left a pretty chilling national psychology in its wake... Can you guys attest to the cultural climate of that era firsthand?

All of your children and all of my children / are gonna have to pay for our mistakes some day / and until then may peace guide your way / peace go with you brother....great song.
PEACE GO WITH YOU MY BROTHER. AS I SIT IN MY LIVING ROOM THINKING OF ALL THAT'S GOING ON IN THIS WORLD 🌎, SOMETIME IT'S HARD TO FIND PEACE. BUT THAN I REMEMBER YOUR 🎵 SONG. THANK U MY BROTHER. ✌❤, ALWAYS.
I saw this man so many times at Bijou over Philly that when I hear his voice gives me chills. Thank you for leaving your legacy knowledge and power!! S.I.P
You know the sample's hot when 3 of the best rappers out here have all murked it. (Joey Bada$$ - Waves, Kendrick Lamar - Poe Man's Dreams, J.Cole - False Prophets)
Waves and False Prophets don’t count as two different samples, they are the same beat. But I knew Poe Mans Dreams had a similar vibe to Waves when I heard it holy shit didn’t realise Waves also sampled this.
Not all, but some hip hop and a lot of gangsta rap influenced our kids minds ! LL, Jay Z, Snoop Dogg, Tu Pac, lil Kim, lil Wayne, and lots of others. They sold the music for a message, 🤔 They told our brothers to sag their pants, get a grill and tattoo ! You can also call a sister a bitch. Real music, uplifts your mind, your spirit, and the way you live life. I'd rather hear Earth Wind and Fires "That's The Way Of The World" or George Bensons "Breezing" Lionel Richie's "Do It To Me One More Time" or even Chingys "Pulling Me Back" 🎼🎵 So yeah, our music was sold, and stolen ! White record executives and labels, got rich off the hood culture ! And a few of our brothers got paid too. Guys like 2 Live Crew, and R Kelly ? Hopefully the older , wiser people can keep the message positive. Maybe that's why Prince had 'Slave' written on his face ? 🎵👥🗣️🎼
I like to start it out from the bottom and build with ya, Be on my last dollar and split the bill with ya. Im 23 with morals and plans of living cordial, Not rich but wealthy, There's nothing you can tell me My killings are not remorseful The city got my back before that I'll give them my torso.
This is life b careful. Your fight is not with hand but your mind u must change up u can do it I be got faith n each n every. One that's living. Be proud of yourself n learn you ll b fine. 2
i wonder how many people - black or otherwise - know who gil is, much less know his music? we don't adequately reward greats like him in his lifetime - yet every new kid on the block sells millions with their first release and gets awards by the bundle! Pity! But those of us who've been blessed by his music will never forget him.
To all i love this man, his family and all who may understand. i just can not continue to live what i speak for it is now coming to be part of me trying to stay focus. for to continue to speak what you say someday you may have to live it.
