Why Manchester City Think Matheus Nunes Is One Of The Best Midfielders In The World

- Man City's final signing of the transfer window is Wolves Matheus Nunes; a player Pep Guardiola once described as one of the best midfielders in the world. But while his time in the midlands was spent playing in a system entirely at odds with City's, this might be a deal that makes a crazy kind of sense.

All this talk and Pep will suddenly play him at LB😂
Nice try 😂😂😂
😂bernado played there last season
Just like he did to Bernardo Silva last season
That part 🎯
Pep is actual sicko he will do alot of weird stuff that usually works for some reason 😂😅😂😅
What if it's simply a case of letting Phillips go and Nunes being back up or deep partner for Rodri sometimes? It could be that simple.
I reckon its this too
True maybe just let him shine doing what he does at his natural comfortable position! While letting Foden shine and keeping our bench hungry and good enough to beat any squad in the world themselves once they come off the bench and into the game! That would make more sense to me! It’s working with Akanji Ake Walker and Bernardo
It's probably for a number of reasons and this is more than likely one of them. Even if Phillips stays I don't think hes quite trusted by pep enough to fill in for Rodri.
Really in for De Bruyne injuries
Yep - that's what I thought. It seems Rodri maybe getting forward more than I remember, which makes sense given the loss of Gundogens goal threat. In the defensive sitting role Nunes offers more going forward than Phillips - who might be a decent passer of the ball but if the opposition are employing a press as many do, his only option he has is to hand the ball over to someone else to make space/carry it forward. I guess we will see.
I'm not sure you're right mate. We'll have to wait and see...but I think Nunes has been bought to rotate with Kovatic & Rodri. It'll mainly be Kova & Nunes competing to play alongside Rodri. But the main reason for the Nunes signing is to give Rodri a rest & play in a double pivot with Kova. So Nunes is a kind of Phillips replacement but Phillips has chosen to stay & get next to no game time.
He is batter than kovosic
As somebody who watched Adam a long time ago at WhatCulture, it's amazing to see what you've done with this channel. Amazing work. You're genuinely up there with Tifo, and honestly most of the time I prefer your videos to theirs.
Kovacic isn’t going a whole season without injury. Even so Bernardo is probably next in line for that left 8 spot. With Doku, Foden, or Alvarez covering on the right. But yeah good depth and competition. Pep loves versatility. All in all the squad now has more depth, is younger, faster, refreshed and hungry for more trophies.
When you consider that Haaland could easy get injured and that given his frame, be out for a few weeks, there's only Alvarez as cover. So it would be back to a false 9 I guess if Alvarez also happens to be out.
@@stever8669Crazy but Alvarez isn't the type to be injured just like Rodri
Is KDB nailed whens he's back fit with these new signings?
@@adammm321 KdB is the most important players his position isn't up for discussion.
Don't forget Grealish of 100 mil was sitting quite alot on the bench his first season and I think this season he will be on the bench more or change to midfield.
As a portuguese i can tell you right now, he´s not a CDM, he´s a pure box to box, at Sporting Palhinha and Ugarte did that CDM role. Wolves was always a very poor fit to his football.
Great point and analysis! I don’t view him as a Cdm either! We already have Rodri, Stones, Kovacic, Ake for that! We need him up front providing offense
Playing cdm for city is very different from playing cdm for sporting. Pep would much rather a player who’s class on the ball rather than a tackler, he’d much rather play Kovacic cdm than players like palhinha
@@dddffr4392 mate what are you talking about
@@darthplagueis8886 you said palhinha played cdm not nunes for sporting but Man City and sporting want different things in their cdms so I’m saying nunes could be played as a cdm at Man City even though he wasn’t played there at sporting
@@X61n78- what was wrong?
Good video and I like the use of clips. But I disagree that Pep doesnt trust Foden in the 8 role. He had to compete with Gundogan and De Bruyne there last season, as well as having an operation. Your justification here was to do with Stones and Walker and nothing to do with Foden
Hi. I had an idea for a video if you perhaps have the time and hadn't thought about it. Looking at Newcastle's first four games and in particular the last three, I was wondering what your opinion on why things have gone wrong, why the midfield doesn't seem to be working and what Eddie Howe is trying to do. Going on your previous videos I absolutely think you are the best man for the job. I also thought it would be a good time to do this considering the international break.
Cheers, interesting stuff as always
I think youre close but just missed the mark. I think we'd actually see Nunes / Kova deep with Rodri pushing further forward. Rodri has a goal threat himself. We've seen that.
Most recently against Newcastle he scored the winner and post-match came out and said that he loves the freedom to move further forward. He said he can do it with Kova but couldnt with Gundogan. I wouldn't be quick to assume that Rodri will always be deepest.
Itll be interesting to see how it turns out!
You're right about having his skill set can be deployed further up the pitch as well - it is what managers did with Kante in Chelsea. He can help with high pressing, and getting the ball back as soon as its lost.
And he's a direct replacement for 'Kovacic' for games where Pep decides to play someone with Rodri.
Phillips probably stayed so Rodri can rest in some games, but Kovacic/Nunez can do it as well if Philipps continues to struggle with his form.
I'm glad you made that point later on in the video because the stats sometimes don't show a players skillset but more how that team plays. Stick Rodri in that Wolves team, he'd not have as a good a pass accuracy either, you need team-mates to get on the end of your passes to help you own accuracy so sometimes top players playing in underperforming teams can create misleading stats. Based on the eye test Nunes has all the skills to be a great Pep player, still a bit surprised they went for him but I have no doubt he'll be a steady performer, he is a lot more suited to them than Phillips ever was.
Ngomong apa , ribet banget
Julian Alvarez not Edson! :)
Lmao 😂 he had me thinking we signed a new Alvarez striker ⚽️
These videos are so good you made me watch the entire ad 😂😂😂
Probably the best breakdown yet, nice one
I think this transfer is for next season. Considering the market is crazy this season with SPL splashing money (and I bet it'll get crazier next season), and Bernardo Silva might leave next season, I think it's probably smart to sign a midfielder early.
Number 6 Role - Rodri, Kovacic, Nunes, Rico Lewis
Number 8 Role - KDB, Bernardo, Kovacic, Nunes
Number 10 role - KDB, Bernardo, Foden, Alvarez
Midfield area are well covered. they are all press resistant midfielders, and can play several position.
Excellent video. I can't help thinking there are similarities between Nunes & Kovacic. I think City shd have opted to get Nunes & another more natural 10 like Eze or Wirtz and left Kovacic at Chelsea.
I think its about adding players who are good in turnovers in the middle of the park or in defensive third. For teams city think will have relatively more of the ball or will be very attacking they think they can utilize this sort of profile and have better counters. After gundogan's departure and Kevin's inujury we dont have players in that profile. So both him and kovacic solve that.
He has come in to rotate with Rodri and Kova. Last few games, including Champions League Final, Pep showed he trusts Foden in that role instead of Kev
it's mostly creating more options and having reserve players for all position. Like Doku is also playing LWF so not only RWF. More to rotate players
I feel you have it backwards. Kov will play high, but will have to improve distribution. Nunes will drive the ball up the pitch.
You missed one minor detail when explaining the walker role. Second half of that game and the next, Pep switched Akanji to the right side away from the box and placed Kovaci and Rodri as CDMs. What this did was allow City to have their two 8s and 6s with Foden coming alongside Alvarez as 8s, and Walker coming as a RW to create their 5vs 4 attacking phase. With Akanji, Ake and Dias or Gvardiol at the back, there is no one scoring there. Defensively they had a back 3 that became a 4 because Mateo doesn't like to move up more. This is what allowed Rodri to move higher and score the winner at Sheffield. So basically, while everyone is focused on the box midfield, Pep's latest tactical twitch to this team is Walker. He has always been his most important balance setting piece. For the second DM, Nunes and Kovacic will alternate with Rodri. Rodri needs some rest if we are to keep him fit when it matters. Great analysis though! Loved it
ooooooh a little nod to 40k at the end there! Very nice job on the librarian
This transfer didn't seem to make much sense but you've done a great job explaining why it might. I also loved the casual Warhammer 40K reference dropped in.
Great conversion!
Please make a video explaining where Cole Palmer will fit into Chelsea team
i think this could be more of the john stones type roll just so they have depth in that position because it worked very well last season
Maybe he is backup to Stones because stones also carry the ball a lot with some interceptions. Stone like but not quite if that make sense.
Nunes is versatile and will be utilized as so. I can see pep preferring stones as a cb, and nunes could slot into that hybrid role john did so well almost perfectly. Nunes will be all over the pitch match to match.
This is a fenandinho type player in my opinion another type of pivot we can use when we rest GODRI
So is there any possible permutation, any small chance, that Foden, Nunes and Doku could all be on the pitch at the same time? I still am a bit confused how you use all this talent without allowing more than 11 on at the same time
Yes, Halland, Doku RW, Grealish LW, Bernardo and Phoden as '10', Rodri as 6, Nunes 8 and back three defenders Dias/Gvardiol/Walker.
Walker wouldn't need to go high on the pitch cause Doku/Bernardo will be enough on the right side, and he'll be more to prevent counter-attacks.
When KDB is back, Bernardo will be RW and Doku will be at the bench.
When John Stones is back, Pep can choose either to drop Walker, Nunes or Phoden depending on the opponent.
I disagree with this take I actually think Nunes was brought in as a back up to Kovacic, who will move in to CDM when Rodri needs a rest. Whilst Foden will start but play next to Haaland rather than Alvarez.
It's simple. Citeh will mostly play against low blocks, so why not buy another player who can dribble thru them.
I personally think Nunes is better than Kovacic in that Man city's system. What do you guys thinks ?
For me he's a very good replacement for Gundogan
He’s going to be part of the double pivot with rodri/stones/Kova
Can u talk about Ansu fati to brighton
Nunes and Kovacic are exactly the same lol. Tbf, I'd love 2 Kovacics in my team tho.
I think Nunes is a great signing under Pep he's only going to get better and better iv never liked Phillips at The Etihad we should sell Philips
Very few English player have the skillset pep is looking for
Please do Palmer to Chelsea 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽. Not many know what he might bring
TIL Edson Alvarez plays for City.
i think pep will place him in hybrid defender like john stones. his defend still decent but hen can improve
Unexpected 40K!!
Julian, not Ederson Alvarez
Looking at wolves data doesn’t really help, City are buying him based on what they saw he offered at Sporting
Honestly, this man will do the job of Bernardo Silva at the defense, while Bernado will be able to move the ball like De Bruyne. So that's a good and quality buy.
Mancity did so well at the transfer market, I'm really impressed. Used over £200m to bring in young and quality players, then got over £150m from sale of players. The club that knows what they want and need. I just love Mancity and Pep Guardiola's mindset.
No he won't, he's not a defensive midfielder in a million years. Won't play for pep as he gives the ball away far too much and doesn't get it back. From a wolves fan who he frustrated last year being bang average
@@chriswhitehouse7065 if he won't play for Pep, Pep won't habe bought him, go Watch him properly, he holds the ball very well and can drive from back to front.
Real test is when pep leaves
@@Maddy-kb2co the truth is Pep will reign much more than Sir Alex Ferguson, it's a very very long term project. Also, Pep is still very young, may God continue to grant him long life. Mancity is a wise club, they invest and trust in their investment, not pushing their investment around.
Blood for the Blood God!!! Skulls for the Skull Throne!!!
So he's like F. Dejong.
He is Rodri backup
I want to see foden playing instead of grealish
He is just needed for ball retention you’re thinking to much into it😂😂😂
Just like Romeo Lavia. lol
similar profile yes
Nunes did nothing on the pitch at wolves and sits on the bench at city, he will be the best the world has seen
Foden will bench Grealish
Foden gain more freedom playing from the LW where Pep normally plays him.
This guy could end up benching kovacic
Notice something weird here? Arteta signed a more attacking player (Havertz) for that position while Pep signed a more defensive player. The polar opposites. Arsenal already has the KDB counter-part (Odegaard) but what about the Gundogan/Nunes counterpart? Havertz? Nope.
Does Declan Rice not exist? Partey?

😊😊😊NUNES
Foden should leave. Pep has held him back horrendously 😢. He isn't a kid any more.
So you believe youtube?
@@goodman4093you know 😅
@@goodman4093 no idea what youtube says; I say Foden will probably never be seen as the main man the way De Brunye is by Pep.
Stronger version of Jota but plays in middle.
foden😭😭😭he should leave city.foden has world class potential but he is getting wasted at city😔he didnt start a single game in the ucl knockout and only came in when kdb got injured
Like 999
u look like the guy from scrubs
Nope he's gonna play the stones role
I thought he went to Saudi lol. Who was that?
Neves
If u know more than pep why are u not coaching a team?
when does he claim to know more than Pep? He is analysing why Pep might have signed him, did you watch the video?
@@dddgtsd he is saying he don't think the player going to be a a good fit for city team ,if pep think he's a good fit who is him to saying that seems like he knows more than pep u watch the video? And who give you a key to my argument?
@@AshelyBarnes-no2tw well what I took from the video was that he isn't an obvious fit for the City team but that might be part of the reason Pep wants him, he talks about his stats dont match what a Pep player is but his skillset potentially does and Pep has gone more on the eye test than stats (which makes sense as Pep is someone who sees the game better than most). The video didn't give the vibe that this guy thinks he knows more than Pep at all. No-one give me a key to anything, you questioned the video, I'm questioning your comment, it's called dialogue, when you put something into social media generally people respond and discuss things.
Also, people have opinions, I think Eddie Howe made some incorrect decisions at the weekend but I don't think I could do a better job than him, we can all have an opinion without assuming we know better than the professionals.
Actually, he is better than pep
@@dddgtsd fair point
Who is the most popular icon in the world football? Leo Messi? Cristiano Ronaldo? Pep Guardiola? No, no, no.
He is Fabrizio Romano 😂

Let me ask you a stupid question?? Why is PSG's boy the number one pick for Real Madrid over the norseman Haland??????? DRIBBLING!!!!!!
Just a shame he’s spoilt brat. Good luck to them.
I wouldnt go that far. Wolves will fight relegation.. he is a Portuguese international at 25 years of age. If City want you, you really can't blame the dude for downing tools. Wolves were always going to be a feeder / stepping stone and we all know that mate! Wolves are getting a good fee and Tommy Doyle as well
Pep will change that about him
He knows Pep won't that shit. U get shipped out quick. Ask his countrymen Cancelo. No matter how good u are.
I'm in between on this, he shouldn't have signed for Wolves if that's the case, he was always gonna have interest from bigger clubs. It's all well and good using a club as a stepping stone but there is a more professional way of doing it, having said that I totally get why a player would be desperate to jump ships in that situation, the club will want to get as much money as possible though and him going on strike wouldn't have helped.@@user-xs8sg1ju3g
@@user-xs8sg1ju3g yeah fair enough Man City wanted him but don’t be 🔔end at the club your at. We’re all glad he’s gone. No player with that attitude is welcome at wolves.
