  • How To Practice Ball Position, Width of Stance and Foot Position
    Body Swing free samples here: bodyswing.com/freesamples/
    Whether you are a beginner, or more advanced player, you need to make sure your ball position, width of stance and foot position are perfect. I say this because these are 3 setup elements that you need to be checking constantly so you don't do them wrong.
    Keep in mind when you do your set up you are not in motion. So your set up elements should never be wrong. If they are they could be the possible cause of some of your bad shots. So by checking your setup regularly you can eliminate these things from the possible causes of your bad shots.
    I like to teach 3 different ball positions, 3 widths of stance and the same foot position for all clubs. This is what I like. If you do something different then still use this set up tip to figure out a way you can practice what you do precisely so you never do it wrong.

    Hey Paul! I’ve been watching your videos. I’m a pretty solid ball striker, but have been struggling with keeping a tight dispersion pattern. Your tip to swing @ 2/3rds of normal and slowly start increasing speed until you get to that sweet spot of speed and consistency was absolute GOLD!
    The other day I had someone compliment me and say I had a very smooth swing. That’s never happened. I’m just more smooth and balanced in the sweet spot zone and can control the face at impact way more than when I’m stepping on it.
    Thanks 🙏🏼

      This is a great tip for ball position. Just make it a routine so you do the same thing each time. I teach 3 positions with 3 stances. Simple. I just don't like dropping it back too face as it delofts the lower irons too much creating a mis-read on distances.

    Beginner here, been learning golf for a year now so no real bad habits at this stage. I really paid attention to the grip and practiced the effortless swing and it mostly worked. Only problem I had was it felt like my follow through just couldn't open up and the vast majority of my balls went slightly right. Felt blocked. Saw the tip of opening up my left foot 25-30 degrees. I'm guessing that will allow me to open my hips on the downswing? Can't wait to try it today. I'm loving your tips and way of playing golf. Thank you for posting all these tips.

      Interesting. I just read that in my first book. Not sure why I would have said that. Maybe my editor changed it and I didn't catch it. I like driver off the heel. 3w to 7 iron 1 ball inside. 8 to SW or LW 2 balls inside the heel. This is easy and memorable. Forward is fine so even off the heel is fine with longer clubs. Just do it the way I showed in the tip. This way it will be perfect every time.

  • @bertpainter8385
    @bertpainter8385 2 роки тому

    Here's a question based on my natural swing path of the club head. I've usually just swing with my natural rhythm without forcing anything. Just whip the club using my whole body in unison, trying to get that whip snap feel from the club head. I watch where the club head crosses the lowest point of the ground and mark that spot in my head for each club I'm about to hit. That spot is my ball position because that's my lowest point as I'm approaching the ground for the club I'm about to hit, with irons up to 5 iron. Woods are a fraction further in front. Driver like most everyone else. My shorter irons are slightly back of center position about a ball or 2 depending on the grade of the land. If I put the ball as suggested further up in the stance I feel like I have to aim for the ball and not have that natural swing at it.
    I should mention I am 65 with some limitations on back and my rear knee and can't get full extension without pain in both areas when staying behind the ball and with my weight shifting forward and turning while my upper body and arms extend behind the ball at impact. I still stay behind the ball, but my upper body tilt at impact is not what it could be and my front elbow is slightly bent after impact as I follow through. Any suggestions?

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  2 роки тому

      I would keep doing what you are doing. If there are limitations then what you are doing sounds like it's right for you. Not sure why you are getting this pain. Typically, people reverse pivot or hang back on this back foot while turning their upper body through. This stresses the back. Without seeing it I may not be able to pin point the problem but usually the person is not getting off the back foot and compressing the spine. Make sure you are getting off this foot at and past impact going to a vertical position overtop of the forward foot at follow through. I would be thinking about this first then trying to get the extension on the arms. Typically that is wrists too tight and hitting with the arms. I have had tons of people that think they are loose enough when really they are not. Keep in mind it's loose wrists not loose grip: ua-cam.com/video/Z8K3Gctkz7A/v-deo.html

    Paul: I'm a right handed senior golfer and right eye dominant and in regards to this tip on ball position, etc.---what part of the ball should I look at at address & when hitting it---from driver (probably the back of the ball?0 on to the fairways, hybrids to 7 iron, then at the ball positions for the 8 iron thru wedges??? The back of the ball, the top of it (center) or the front of the ball?

      When I am trying to get people to move their head in the backswing I would have them look at the logo or dimple going back and as they hit the ball. Then after they get it they just see the ball as part of the landscape not fixating on it. You fixate on the ball and you will be hitting the ball which is exactly what I don't want you to do.

      They sure do. I say it this way. The club is making and arc. The more you drop it back the more open it may be and swinging out at it. The more forward the more close and in it will swing. The longer the club the longer it would take to square so moving it more forward would be ideal as the clubs get longer.

      Well, this would be the correct ball position and width of stance so there is something in your swing that is a problem. Pulling is hitting with arms. The push is probably you lifting up and coming out of it because your hitting hard with the arms. This locks the wrists and leave the face open. Work on this:

    • @paulwilsongolf

      Usually that would cause you to push it due to hitting it too soon in the arc. Other times when people drop the ball back too much they lean the club too forward which gives them a strong grip. This grip and hand position shuts the face.

    Paul, with regard to ball position - I've never been able to understand, nor implement (although I haven't spent a ton of time trying, to be honest), a ball position that's consistent from, for example, 3 wood through 7 iron. With such a variation in club length in that category, how is it possible that the ball should be positioned the same for each of those clubs? With each shorter club, the swing arc is smaller, so won't the club contact the ground in a different spot? I know you're not the only teacher who emphasizes this approach, but you're the first I'm asking about it - because I trust your advice. Personally (and I've been playing about 30 years, former single-digit handicapper), I play my wedges off the inside of my right heel and move the ball slightly forward with each longer club, until I get to about just forward of middle with my hybrids. Is the concept of ball position a "do whatever works for your swing" kind of thing, or should my swing adapt to a "correct" ball position - which, in the case of what you're advising, would be a drastic change for me. I feel like if I implemented your 3 wood to 7 iron position, I would blade every shot! Thanks!

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  2 роки тому +1

      I just think you are making way too much out of it. Driver is the farthest forward. The longer the club the longer it takes to square so you move it forward to give it more time to reach square. 3 wood to seven are getting shorter so you move them back a little. Shorter clubs 8 down 2 balls back. The ball position you had before delofts the lower clubs to much so you get a mis-read on your iron distances. I would just stick to what is simple unless you can't do it then go back to what you did before. Up to you.

    Why should width of the stance and ball position vary from club to club?

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  4 роки тому

      You are going to get a little wider stance to be more stable for the longer clubs because you are swinging faster. The ball will go further forward in the stance because a linger club is going to take that extra time to square.

    • @Mixer8900
      @Mixer8900 4 роки тому

      @@paulwilsongolf Why would I swing "faster" with longer clubs? Movements are the same if we are using our body correctly. The club head speed will increase due to club beign longer but mechanics are executed at constant speed. I assume you aren't teaching that we should rotate body at different rates when changing clubs. If we are using our body correctly the bottom of the swing arc will be under the left shoulder with all the clubs. Thus we need to place the ball constantly behind that point opposite of the left ear. If we rotate our body at constant rate then there's no reason to change width of the stance depending on the club. Width should be wide enough to have a stable base but narrow enough to make weight shift possible without the head moving all over the place. The width of the stance should be two inches outside neutral joint alignment.
