WB is just gonna drop this one like a bad habit and forget it happened. Once it gets to streaming, they will never mention it again after that. It amuses me.
Something Dan didn’t mention is Damien Leone and Phil Falcone are the only IP owners of Terrifier and Art The Clown. They declined to sell the rights to any distributor as all the usual distributors tried to negotiate with them but wanted ownership. It’s really enlightening to see a creative and his producer conquer the industry system and come out on top when everyone said no.
I saw The Wild Robot after your review recommendation. Beautiful, touching animated film. Glad I saw it with my mom. She definitely was a bit emotional after watching it.
I wanted to thank you Dan for the distraction. I had to put my dog down last week & I’ve been struggling a little bit since. Thank you for the escape! Keep it up 👍🏻 good sir.
Time to mention my fun fact about Friday the 13th (2009) that it opened on a rare 3-Holiday weekend. Friday was the titular Friday the 13th, Saturday was Valentine's Day, and Sunday/Monday were the Presidents' Day weekend. And Joker still had a worse drop!
Thank you for recommending Wild Robot. The day I watched your review, my grandson who we are raising after the passing of his mom, my stepdaughter, had a half day of kindergarten. So I decided to take him and my oldest son, who is autistic and non verbal for a afternoon movie. We all loved it so much. The theme really resonated with me. It was a beautiful film. ❤❤❤❤
A work colleague was off last week, and he went to see Joker 2 on his birthday. He's the most placid, easygoing guy I know - but he told us he left the cinema angry; angry at how bad it was as a sequel, angry at the story, angry that it wasn't even marketed as a musical, which it clearly is in part. If Joker 2 can anger and disappoint a guy like That, it's no wonder its box office take has fallen off a cliff in just 2 weeks - the word is out that it's an insultingly bad cash-grab stinker.
26:41 I think the reason why there was inaccuracies to the theater count for Look Back was because of how GKIDS rolled out the film: it opened in 2 theaters on the 4th, but they also did wide special event screenings for it on the 6th and 7th, so for the overwhelming majority of the 535 theaters it played in last week/weekend, it was only for two days (only one of which was counted towards the weekend total) and only had one showtime per day in most of those theaters as well.
@@nms7872it cost much less and I highly doubt it's quality was worse than the two films in question. Would've been able to scrape by some money theatrically or at least work to rehabilitate DCs image. I have a hard time believing any bullshit story they were peddling about the movie being unwatchable, they don't know what a good movie looks like and the directors are very competent creators.
I’m glad My Hero Academia did good enough to end up at least in the top 10, tho I absolutely wish it could’ve done better as it’s done before. Just lots of competition. I’m probably very alone on this but I’m personally putting it in not just my top 10 favorites of the year, but even my top 5! I was so excited for it and it didn’t disappoint me one bit! And the fact that 5 of the top 10 was animation? Huge W! 🔥 Terrifier 3 was ok imo, but this is coming from someone who’s not very big on the movies or what they do. Still crazy to think how much it’s grown tho and how much of an icon Art has become.
I spent my movie money on Saturday Night, and this movie was directly targeted at me as I am a lifelong SNL fan who has been watching since the seventies. I can tell you that for someone like me, the film was very moving, especially the crescendo-like ending; however, for non-SNL fans, I just have hard time believing that they would get much out of it.
Thank you for pointing out that Todd Philips' bullshit is going to cost a lot of films their chance to get made. He got to make his "Fuck You" movie to the Joker fans and now that sentiment extends to other filmmakers. I hope he doesn't get work for many years.
“Joker has the biggest heist at WB…. “😂😂😂 “WB wanted to sell the company again to have another write off… “ “Terrifier 3 being number 1 in any week was not in any of my Bingo cards”. 😅😊
Great for terrifier... it is nice to see independent movies being successful. I know it is not for everyone but for the looks of it, it is more appealing than some would have you believed.
I believe The Fall Guy is based on a television show from the 70s or 80s. This is with regard to the "Non-sequel/remake gross" graphic. I don't think the show is the most well-known thing, but it might matter to you, so I figured I'd mention it.
Yes, I'm aware of The Fall Guy's TV origins. In the movie realm, it's not a remake of or a sequel to an existing film, which is what I used as the criterion.
Criminal that Pachinko is likely going to be glossed over by audiences and critics again this season. One of the best shows on streaming but trapped behind the Apple TV+ jail door. Will admit that subtitles dont help either - but hey Parasite broke out so 🤷♂️
I'm really confused about Joker 2. I don't know if I should champion daring films, subverting expectations or to rubbish films for not appealing to an audience. It is art.... but it is a business...
Yeah, such films really challenge the simple narratives around box office. If it was a hit people would say: "See, the audience rewards something daring!" People have trouble admitting to themselfes that nobody really knows what will sell at the box office. Yet the reaction is always: "Well, obviously..."
It was Thanksgiving in Canada this weekend and many of the cinemas were closed Sunday and Monday in observation of the holiday. Might explain a bit of a slower weekend.
The Joker 2 will be used as an example as to why studios won’t give full control to directors. They gave Todd everything he wanted and he destroyed a Billion Dollar franchise *corrected spelling*
Aaron Pierre's John Stewart DCU casting is sure to give Rebel Ridge a boost in its 6th wk of release on Netflix. Shocking that Joker 2 could still fall to #4 from #1 when the Actuals come in!
Damn. I remember it vividly. Summer of 2022 was when a sequel was announced and it took social media by storm. And now look at where the film is now. What an absolute free fall.

Anecdotally, I'm surprised Saturday Night is that low. My friend and I saw it in two markets this weekend and both screenings were at least 90% full. Outside of Marvel movies, not sure the last time I can say that was the case. Goes to show that it must not have had the same success in other markets.
Terrifier 3 does have an interesting ad strategy with tons of fake AI genrated facebook ads and articles making it seem like this mediocre horror franchise is something amazing. A really smart and cost effective strategy that really is paying off.

33:40 I have to correct you on the Box Office Flashback, it’s actually the first Hotel Transylvania that came out in 2012. The sequel came out three years later. The grosses on the frame are the same, it’s just you had the sequel instead of the original.
Hearing a lot of the behind the scenes of this movie it seems like Todd Phillips was stuck up his own ass and the conditions he told the studio to make this movie literally blew up in their face. He literally told the studio Joker was intended to be a standalone film and they greenlit a sequel anyway. This feels like a Matrix Resurrection situation where the director purposely sought to make a movie so shitty that the studio would leave the property alone. It's already bad enough being divisive, but try being divisive on an R-Rating that is already limiting the audience that is gonna see your film and just shrinks that even further? For sure WB overestimated Joker 2, as well as underestimated Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, so that Joker 2 will be #3 and not #4, which it will be when final numbers come in.
If Beetlejuice 2 ends up making more money than Joker 2 in the second week, this will be the second time Michael Keaton beats the Joker
