Kirby, I want to thank you for all the effort and energy you put into your videos and providing all the info that you do. Although I have plenty of woodworking experience, the speaker side of things is completely foreign to me. You've done a beyond professional job at conveying all this info to beginners and have proven time and time again to be a valued member of the youtube community.

    Safety Sally alert !!!
Don't crosscut on the table saw using both the miter gauge and rip fence at the same time the way you did. If the wood gets cocked between the blade and the fence it will kick back and come at you so fast you won't even be able to think of moving out of the way before it's into you.
To get repeated crosscuts, clamp a block of wood to the fence well before reaching the blade and register your stock against it. When the stock is being cut, it will not be up against the fence, so much less risk of a kickback.
Even better, check out a video or two about building a crosscut sled. It will quickly become your favorite table saw jig.

Microjig's Dado stop is a good tool to act as a crosscut stop, plus it is great for repeatability when doing dado cuts.

    • @bigfoot286
      @bigfoot286 5 років тому +1

While I would generally agree with you, he used the miter gauge to support the material that was in between the blade and the fence. The reason you are not supposed to use a miter gauge with the fence is because it normally leaves an unsupported piece trapped between the blade and the fence which can vibrate, turn and cause kickback. The way Kirby did it he supported the piece and continued to push it. The same way one would if they were just pushing it with their hand, a push stick, or a micro jig gripper. It has no more of a chance at having kickback then any other cut.

was just looking at those speakers yesterday while trying to find a good speaker for a single or easily crossoverable (if that's a word) application. was actually wondering " has Kirby used this one before?" recognized it by it's surround in the preview pic and had to see this build. great job. I'm a woodworker and love to see diy boxes with great finishes and u always come through. keep it up 👍

Jody Claborn I don't think Kirby is the guy whose opinion you are looking for. His woodworking skills are great but he doesn't use any stuffing in his enclosures, no bracing, no baffle step filters no nothing. So all in all, the woofers don't get the opportunity to perform as good as they can/were intended to. Maybe try a forum when you are looking for opinions on speakers

Beautiful work again!! The fit of that speaker in the recess is impressive!! How did you achieve that black finish? I can't seem to get it right... I feel the port was nicer before a piece of plastic was set in there. Maybe a solid wood port all the way could be interesting! I've had good comment on it when I do it...anyway, I'm awaiting the comment on the sound of those TB, I'm very curious to see if they are worth their price!

You spend a lot of time on the box but little time on the rest.
without tweeter to customize crossover, you never get good sound! You can buy the most expensive without getting good sound! Bass pipes on small boxes do not give good sound!

Hi Kirby hope you are okay, I have a question if you wouldn't mind. Did you build or purchase the router adapter you use for circular cutting? What would one call such an adapter? Also would you ever look into building panel speakers as a video? I wouldn't mind learning a little about that too. Thanks for all your hard work, its mesmerising to watch and a handy learning tool for someone like me.

I noticed how on your walnut speaker build that you glued the natural wood front on, then taped it off and painted the rest of the cabinet. Here you painted the cabinet before you glued the natural front on. Which way do you prefer to do it, or do you not think it makes a difference? Thanks!

    • @skandiaart

Homemade, well made and beauty to the eye! But should you make such small speakers yourself? Must have tools and a house! At the same time, you could buy smaller and good speakers relatively cheaply and redesign the look of the speaker yourself! For example, Elac Debut 2.0 Bookshelf Speakers
    DB52.

8:18 It appears that it's a coaxial driver if you look into the center piece, and it appears to have an extra set of terminals for the central tweeter. But this dude seems to be ignoring the second set of connecters. Is it a coaxial driver or is the center piece just a phase plug?

It's not like you can hear anything from the sound test, unless you have the exact same set of speakers. Each set of speakers have a character that can't be listened to unless you're right there next to them. All you could really tell would be the frequency response, but you couldn't make a judgment of character or sound pressure level without quantitative data.

I think all wood has a right to be called beautiful but that stuff is either pine or fir and is literally the cheapest milled lumber you can buy

Everything was ok until you placed them in that odd way, they should be at the same height right? otherwise it would be so annoying to hear music trough them especially panned effects

There are NO solid wood board speaker boxes available on market today, usually MDF or plywood, easily water destroyable

solid wood introduces natural resonant frequencies into the box and is a bad choice for making speakers. MDF and Plywood have random particle distributions that eliminate that. The best audio systems are made with it for a reason. Not just to keep build costs cheap. The wood is absolutely beautiful though, and its disappointing that we cant get kind of quality look with good audio. :\
