Thanks for the video Brian ! It seems unfortunate that a permanent residence is all but necessary to get a driver's license, register a vehicle, get insurance, vote and have many of the freedoms that most of us take for granted. I recently read about the struggles of a 70 year-old disabled Vietnam Veteran who had his ID and his possessions stolen, had lost contact with his family. It was incredibly hard for him to survive. This guy had some PTSD but wasn't aggressive or an addict. He was quite articulate when he wasn't in a stressful situation. He was eventually "rescued" by a cop that took time to listen to his story, took an interest and helped him connect with social service workers that could assist him in reestablishing his legal identity and reconnecting with his family.
" helped him connect with social service workers " far too many people are clueless on how to go about getting info on social services. In my travels I hooked up with soup kitchens, food pantries, etc where people there were often hitched up with local social services. Then there are city, county, state websites.
I volunteered at a rescue mission in Sioux Falls, SD. 4-6 hours in the laundry room. bed sheets and towels. 15 minutes before the last load was done, I'd pick someone in the day room or outside that needed the clothes on their back washed on the heavy duty cycle. I stocked enough of everything to outfit them when they stepped out of the shower. I'd invite them to have a few beers. listen to their story. find out where a family member or friend lived and usually drove them there myself in a dodge caravan I bought for $347. word gets around who's got your back and who they can trust
You are very fortunate to find an RV park that would accept your van. Most RV parks will not take conversions no matter how nice. They have to be built originally as an RV.
I travel that road often between northern Nevada and 'Vegas. That road is also one of my alternate routes when I travel northern Nevada to southern CA when snow storms cover Mammoth and Bishop. I've stayed a couple times at that RV park. Like you say, it's quiet and reasonably priced. That location is also close to Death Valley Park for exploring too. The Alien gift shop has a lot of quirky alien themed stuff that I can't seem to resist every time I stop there (Like vodka in an alien head shaped bottle!). The restaurant there is also very good for breakfast! However, it's been a year since last time I ate there. Good luck on your stuff!!
Hi Brian , it would be good if there was a national system for nomads or seasonal workers. We have the same problems in Australia. With the number of people choosing this way of life, I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard for the government to work it out. I wish you all the best for Xmas and the New Year. Cheers Michael
When we changed our state to Nevada in 2023, we were told by DMV we had to stay 30 days before we could apply for our licenses. But when we went in, a different DMV clerk said we had to bring in a rental receipt for an additional 30 days. I think it depends on the office and the staff’s interpretation of the regulations. In the front of the DMV manual it says specifically new residents “must obtain their new license WITHIN THE FIRST 30 DAYS” upon arrival in Nevada.
20 years ago in Fallon, Nv I brought the plates and title to a chev pickup in the dmv. Oregon plates and title. they said they had a agreement with border states like Oregon and Utah to keep the Oregon plates on while I worked in Nevada. I drove 18 wheeler 27 years. thoroughbreds nationwide and hot asphalt oil to paving outfits during summer months@@AdventureVanMan
Hi Brian, best of Luck to you my friend. I hope everything works out for you. It does look like a doable temporary place. Thanks for taking us along. Your food did look tasty. Your friend, Louise
Getting your NV residency is it's own adventure! It does sound like the right decision for you so you do what you gotta do! Hope it goes well. Happy Holidays Brian!
When i first started RVing I stayed at Nevada Treasures RV Resort in Pahrump for about 6 months and established residency in South Dakota. I can only imagine how much it is now. First time I towed I towed my 24 ft trailer over the mountains and made a wrong turn ending up on the Vegas strip. Learning curve to everything! 😂
Brian, I really appreciate how thorough you are in giving us information and reasons for your decisions. Great video and I hope it all works out for you.
I lost my flat in August and currently sleeping on a couch for $100 a month, now I have a good idea how to deal with the driver license and insurance address issue. Thank you so much and once I get my van I hope to see this dude and buy him a lunch.
Great video, Brian, very interesting to someone who is not a van lifer! I'm curious what happens with health insurance when you change residency between states? I have a few friends who do live on the road and some of them have had difficulty finding coverage in their state of residency that provides acceptable (or any) coverage outside of that state. Thought I'd also mention, once you pick up your trailer a worthwhile spot to check out nearby is Spicer Ranch near Beatty. They have a MTB trail network that is pretty fun and free (by donation) camping with restrooms and showers.
I've been in Nevada going on 4 years. bought the chev HHR in Sioux Falls, SD. I've been pulled over for a headlight out. never once asked to register my car in Nevada by law enforcement. it's a snow bird state. just bring your check and spend it here in Nevada. they must teach economics in the police academy here... edit...4 years with this vehicle. I've been coming to Reno and Laughlin, Nv for over 30 years
Trying to find a self serve car wash for taller vehicles can prove to be a chore out on the road. Looks like you barely squeezed in that one! I haven't watched a video for awhile, congrats on getting over 100,000 subs!! Well deserved.
I’m 69 and there is a decent hospital in Pahrump. Due to the number of retirees here, there are a lot of specialists in senior care. Down the road on the way to Las Vegas, there’s an excellent hospital and a standalone 24-7 emergency room about 40 minutes away.
The health care in Nevada is nationally rated as being both good and affordable. The city of Las Vegas has good hospitals, specialist in cancer and all other areas of medicine. So no worries about that.
I just went thru the whole process that you're dealing with....and in the same places! I did it all this summer. I had almost the same exact turnout as you did, searching for a rv park in Pahrump. I was seriously not impressed with that whole experience and I left for another town like you did. Since it was summer and really hot, I went north to Winnemucca. It all went well there. I paid the same amount that you did for the rv park. Id highly recommend Winnemucca for summertime residency seekers. I bought a month but just stayed one week. Spent most of that time blessing out around Mt Shasta. Originally from Michigan. Now I'm a Nevada resident and so is my campervan. I have that Winnemucca address....a legal, real address. I get my mail in Pahrump at a PMB address. But I'm currently snowbirding the Yuma area where weather is great. Heading to Pahrump tomorrow though. Will be there for a couple days. I'll keep my eye out for your rig!
I bought a parcel, 1/5 acre for $2k around 20 yrs ago. It came with a physical address on Lynn Ct. I still own it. There's still no homes, or streets on the whole subdivision.
The streets are there on paper, but not yet paved. I parked my trailer on the lot, and used it as a weekend getaway. The Nye county office told me l could put in a mailbox on the paved street a block away, but l never did. I have since sold the trailer, and eventually sell the parcel too.
In 2020, I "rested" at that Amargosa Valley Rest Stop many times. Good central location for experiencing a few sites within a days travel. Helpful information, Brian, thank you for sharing. It is odd that one park had a 28-day limit. One would think they'd be glad to sell the extra 2 days as long as they had vacant spots. So you will have to do that 30-night stay once every year or is it just this first time? Hey, that dinner looked good! Who'd have thought you'd find good Indian food in the middle of nowhere! I look forward to your next video on this topic as I expect to be doing it myself next year. Meanwhile, stay safe!
Seems like a pretty chill place to hang out, get some rest and recharge. Stayed at a place in North Ga. paid for 3 days last Thanksgiving and stayed one night. People pack in very tight most if not all living there, junk cars, right behind the main road loud trucks the entire time, addons to trailers just trashy. This place and the amenities look very good for the money. thanks for making this series, I'll most likely follow this same path next spring early summer so thanks for sharing the details!
Hi Brian - Thanks for all the content (on and off again nomad for the past 25 years). I may be heading to that park later on this winter but I will probably stay in the CONEX studios you talked about. Can you share more what you thought of those? Thanks!
Well Brian, at least if you must endure some weeks in this situation, you’re taking care of something major/long term. Doing it right, and thinking ahead, proactively. Wishing you a peaceful holiday season…if you’re not doing anything New Years Eve, there’s always the Phish webcast from MSG 😎✌🏽 Peace
Welcome to the neighborhood, I live in the county next door you smartly avoided, Clark 😞 (Las Vegas area), it's where work is. Beatty and Tonopah were also options as well. If you're looking for some places to explore, go to Gold Point (not Goldfield, although you can later), the turn off it hwy 267 towards Lida, 50 miles north of Beatty. There's a small RV park, Ghost Town, mines, saloon and lots of areas to explore on your bike. Sheriff Herb runs it the RV park and Walt runs the Saloon. Cool place to hang out for a few days. There's also boonedocking out there also. BTW, Herb isn't an actual Sheriff 😅.
Welcome Brian to Nye County (my full time home) hope you enjoy yourself here (I'm sure you will). Happy Holidays to you, stay safe and mobile safely when you depart.
Cool , I set up in Pahrump in 1999 for same reasons. I was only there for a couple of years before I went back to Colorado as my base . I found auto insurance rates were also less in Nye County.
You’re in my town. Which has turned into a mini Vegas. lol. I’m positive that the good ones coming here have wonderful intentions. Crowded now looking to move soon.
Beatty: decent bbq place. They dont open until 1pm tho. Across from bbq place is the happy burro which has good chili. Dollar store for some supplies, too
Well, not your preference, but you have to do it. It's a good thing to be able to get your medical done. One never knows what can happen. It's not a really bad place, decent price. Always nice to meet a new friend in your travels. Time flies, your stay will be over before you know it. Beautiful sunset. 🙂👍
You could offer to replace that noisy shower room fan if he’ll pay for the part. They’re real easy to replace. I moved into a 55 and older mobile home park when I was 51. Sometimes if you talk to the manager they’ll let you in. It’s worth a try.
Good video Brian. I remember when I watched you "boondocking" in San Diego area. You've come a long way. Big GMC vehicle now. Soon you'll be buying homebase land. Then like Bob W., you'll end up back in a small vehicle. 😉 Keep the faith. Hang in there. and again, ty for the video ..
Some of the casinos in Pahrump will let you buy a parking permit for campers. And it's not priced crazy and they give you a receipt so that might work for you.
I’m retired and adjunct faculty at my local comm college and loving it. The students are of all ages, color, and gender. All are motivated and eager to learn and get licensed in a trade or new trade. I’m having fun too.
1 step closer to residency👍, I would def go to dmv before 30 days. They are somewhat lenient in those desolate counties. Heck fees are fees. Should be fine. Happy travels Brian🤙🤙, be blessed. 🙏🙏
I would have never guessed you were 50! You look much younger. I imagine going into that park felt a bit like going into a dentist office or applying for a job you don't want. Not quite your element. Hope it works out well for you and you can get back to where you are more comfortable. been watching your travels for a couple years now and always enjoy your videos.
I had to go through this also but I found Arizona was very reasonable for tags and drivers license. But it's probably a good idea to resident where you mostly stay.
Hey Brian, I totally get the discomfort in campsites but glad you found a spot that is better on the budget with the unexpected Indian Food treat See of they will make you Palak Paneer with an onion naan and tamarind sauce omg! Thank you for sharing your process. It is helpful as I decide also ❤ Blessings to you! At the moment Im in my selfbuilt campervan on the border of New Brunswick . Down to -3 one night Arctic Blast
You might want to check with the DMV as to the receipt needing an address in it. I had the same type of receipt with no address on it and the DMV would not accept it.
Public shower floors can gift you with athletes foot; i spray to disinfect and wear flip flops; cos it got me one time, bigly! spray also the bottom half of shower walls.🎉
my wife and I stayed in that same park. we had left Death Valley and heading to Hoover dam and she was tired and wanted to rest up and wanted AC for the night. Finally got power at the 3rd pedistal

I've been to that gas station, didn't know the RV park was there. Nevada is a bit of an odd state, eccentric, outlaw, wild west. It's fun though.
New Mexico is even cheaper than Nevada and most of the state doesn’t get as hot because of the elevation.

Have you thought about buying a piece of land in Pahrump. You can get a small parcel under $10k

Some of the casinos in Pahrump will let you buy a parking permit for campers. And it's not priced crazy and they give you a receipt so that might work for you.
$600
@@AdventureVanMan Ouch especially with no showers!!! They have upped those prices since I was last there.
God bless, stay safe. Sorry for some of the parks blocks. Urr it can be frustrating.
I plan on retiring in Nevada in a couple of years and work part time as a Teacher or a Chaplain.
Don't go with teacher if you don't know it's not capitalized.
Be nice
@@BrittMFHThank you.
@@BrittMFHShe's just trying to point out those two words. Capitalizing them gives them more emphasis.
I’m retired and adjunct faculty at my local comm college and loving it. The students are of all ages, color, and gender. All are motivated and eager to learn and get licensed in a trade or new trade. I’m having fun too.
Thanks for the information
Thank you Brian
Maybe taking a few pictures which prove your rv and you are in this receipt. Just an idea.
Bonjour Brian thanks again for the video
Try going to gabbs, and or Fallon area
1 step closer to residency👍, I would def go to dmv before 30 days. They are somewhat lenient in those desolate counties. Heck fees are fees. Should be fine. Happy travels Brian🤙🤙, be blessed. 🙏🙏
I hope things go well for you
Happy New Year
Good luck in your travels.
I’ve stayed at that Escapees park many times. Pretty quiet.
This is awesome!
All the best to you as you wait out your time. Hopefully you won’t need to do the full 30 days.
Sweet ❤ Stay safe Brian 🙏
Hey Brian,
I totally get the discomfort in campsites but glad you found a spot that is better on the budget with the unexpected Indian Food treat
See of they will make you Palak Paneer with an onion naan and tamarind sauce omg!
Thank you for sharing your process. It is helpful as I decide also
❤
Blessings to you!
At the moment Im in my selfbuilt campervan on the border of New Brunswick . Down to -3 one night
Arctic Blast
Ow!
Interesting info! Thanks!
You might want to check with the DMV as to the receipt needing an address in it. I had the same type of receipt with no address on it and the DMV would not accept it.
uh oh.
Public shower floors can gift you with athletes foot; i spray to disinfect and wear flip flops; cos it got me one time, bigly! spray also the bottom half of shower walls.🎉
I’ve used Escapes for 4 years in Texas, great for mail and residence in Texas!
I thought I recognized your rig when I was passing through there.
Thanks for the 411 on Nevada, I had heard south Dakota was getting to be a challenge. Happy trails to y'all
Probably a good reason if at all possible to buy some type of property in some state just to get residency there.
You could see about helping and getting a discount on your spot.
my wife and I stayed in that same park. we had left Death Valley and heading to Hoover dam and she was tired and wanted to rest up and wanted AC for the night. Finally got power at the 3rd pedistal
I live in pahrump. Try quartsite Arizona
Really? Even with emission requirements and state income tax?
Good luck Brian!
Good luck hope all goes smoothly ❤
