  • In this episode I show how we manipulate our colonies in spring to equalize. This makes our schedule more predictable with each yard in the yearly timeline.

    Equipment seems tight need to watch for that buying used home made equipment....

    • @Ashby_Farms_NC
      @Ashby_Farms_NC  6 місяців тому +1

      Equipment is tight…..on purpose. I custom build all my equipment myself. 1/4” tighter end to end allows the frames to butt up against the wood, which eliminates spots for shb, and the bees propolize the frames them to the box. 1/2” wider box allows the bees to police the area between the outside frame and the box for shb. I don’t understand why it’s not the industry standard.

    Yep things are getting going. Are you seeing any or much drones yet ??. Two weeks ago my home yard colony were very small or about where I like them to be at this time of year but as of now it looks like they are ready to split . I am going to be going into them today to see where they stand but I already know they are full . I am seeing some drones but not a lot . Last year I was splitting the second week of February so I guess this year it will be the second week of March . Fun Fun Fun . How did your sourwood harvest turn out last season??. Thanks

      @Ashby_Farms_NC  6 місяців тому +1

      Had a great sourwood crop! Seeing some drones but not enough. I want my queens to emerge around 3/18 and mate around 3/23. Better drone saturation then

    My question has probably been answered but I noticed your hive covers are made with planks. There seems to be gaps when you lift them. Doesn't this allow heat out and water in? Thanks!

    • @Ashby_Farms_NC
      @Ashby_Farms_NC  5 місяців тому +1

      Yes and yes. I get a lot of criticism for it. Yet they work just fine. The bees propolize some of them shut.

      We run Italians. I only ship virgin queens, so the sperm in the spermethica doesn’t get damaged.
