    I spent way too many hours of my life on IRC, too but have to disagree with you about it being so ephemeral. We used BNC software and channel logging bots to always be able to see what happened while we were AFK. I do get that there are some differences but it's pretty much what we had going on Efnet in the 2003-5 period that I was always online.
