Man, I miss Ashanti's presence as a hit-making R&B diva! I literally grew up on her & Aaliyah's posthumous legacy, the hits they'd both churn out were extraordinaire! There was not a day they weren't playing any of Ashanti's videos on channels, especially when I was residing overseas in South Korea. They had a marathon, "Making the Video" special, documentaries and everything in height of her "Chapter II" album and I couldn't get enough. Still a proud owner of the CD 20 years later. Wild that it's been that long, sheeesh!

This song is forever iconic. It's so weird how the sound of the song doesn't really fit in a certain time period. It doesn't sound dated AT ALL. A lot of older R&B has that old school vibe, and it feels heavy on your chest. This song just floats, if you know what I mean. it's hard to describe. The way it's sung just flows so well and the instrumental compliments it rather getting in the way.

I grew up in the late 90s and early 00s and I think that artists my age are doing well in keeping R&B alive. FKA twigs, The Weekend, Miguel, Banks, SZA, Frank Ocean, Anderson Paak, Blood Orange, Gallant, NAO, Jhene Aiko, Tinashe, etc. are all pushing R&B forward right now. Y'all are caught in the past.
+ChannelX Yeah, the thing is, as good as some of those artists are, their music is pop, not R&B. Today urban music is very watered down and radio friendly, but R&B pre 2005 had more soul , funk and edginess to it, and there was lots of it. Now, you are hard pressed to find that kind of vibe. I'm not African American, so I can say this without being called racist... R&B back then sounded more 'black.'

I just think a lot of new artists latch on to certain trends, and go with it. Majortity of new music sounds redundant to me. artists like aaliyah, ashanti, usher, tlc, boyz11men, destiny's child, erykah badu, brandy, Toni Braxton, Mariah Carey, miss elliot, fantasia ect.. they'll always be superior artists for me
+yaahyak all of the artists I named make R&B. People now are calling it "alternative R&B" kind of like how "neo soul" got categorized into its own separate sub genre. There may be pop elements in some of their songs (pop infused R&B is nothing new) but none of those artists make purely pop music.
