Learning the ancestral technique of kite-fishing | SLICE

- Wapo is the traditional chief of the Aikawa, the oldest tribe on the island of Santa Catalina, in the south of the Solomon archipelago. Every year, in June, he goes kite fishing in the waves of the Pacific Ocean.
This year his young nephew Jay has been designated to follow Wapo's footsteps and perpetuate the legend of kite fishing. Wapo shows his pupil how to let the kite reach its flying altitude and, at the same time, how to control the line, so that the bait is carried by the kite, and skims the crest of the waves. If he lets it drag in the water, the fish won't be interested.
Jay will need many years of experience before becoming a great fisherman like Wapo, but he is already beginning to master all the elements of kite fishing.

These two are my distant relatives from neighbouring santa catalina, few miles from Santa ana in the solomon Islands. These fishing techniques are still used today. Besides gardening, fishing is an important source of food to us Islanders. This video depicted exactly how our ancestors passed down knowledge and skills to the next generation. We are melanesian in the Pacific Ocean and beside our Polynesian and Micronesian brothers in the Pacific, we are also seafarers, an important aspect of our survival.
What a wonderful lifestyle
They seem very happy and proud to pass on the profession. The fish looks tasty too.
Wow love from India
Bro so they wtach the kite to see the different kind of wind flow and that somehow means what fish are available - please explaing the conncetion. Fascinating
@@Civilmonkey1 it's a simple life in dark contrast from urban or city life. Time is not of the essence on this lifestyle. Weather or the natural elements plays huge part in daily chores and communal activities. As you can see, they're small island inhabitants and besides fishing, gardening and farming is the order of the day. The effects of climate change has a huge impact on this low-lying islands and as such, unfortunately we too have been affected in many ways. But yes, despite all these, we live a happy and carefree life.
Real people with real skills, no cell phones & other distractions, living in a natural environment, this is the life we were meant to live. Beautiful! Sad for us as we push the buttons!
Real skills?...you underestimate what people are capable of
All is the place it should be, those people are at peace with nature because it was meant to be and I'm glad for them, same as it is for you, without those buttons you wouldn't be able to see them and their lifestyles and that was also destined to be. Let's just cherish and better use the luxury we afford because some people can't afford any.. One love ❤❤❤
@comunismofóbico & cristiano it is ah better life no plastic fishing line fishing net pollution and causing divers get stuck on plastic lines below the ocean and causing them there death and the extinction of all life on earth overfishing because of plastic artificial=fake unnatural fishing line net instead of using spider web natural real fishing line 🕸 that does not fuck up Earth’s Life
are you saying skills of today sucks bec. its not traditional or primitive?
This might sound weird to others but I appreciate how you did not translate their language I watch a lot of documentaries and they are often translated sometimes it's helpful to me to hear the translation but for this specific documentary I'm enjoying just hearing the natural language in their natural environment just to hear the sound of ther voice is a privilege and im thankful for that so im content with not understanding what they are saying there is Beauty with not knowing everything
I like what you said🙂especially your last sentence.
@@katzwhite5962 thanks! I appreciate you.
@@ladyfame1430 😃
Subtitles would be nice
I was thinking the same thing! Well said !! Thank you!!
Fishing without a hook ... amazing... natural talent
You can also use silk threads, we do that here in Denmark
@@henriknielsen9674 ♥️
the way that kid was getting the rope from the needlefish was scary, they have really sharp teeth.
Family. Fun activities. Values. Awesome parenting!
What else could that kid need?
What a blessed child! What a beautiful place!
I watch shows like this and often feel their lives must be so peaceful. Instead of living like myself and so many others, spending more time at a job for money than with our own love ones and friends. Sometimes I wish I had it in my to give it all up and go live a life like this.
I am very proud of the boy. He did it everything his own at the end
My special interest as a kid was flying kites , i read about the Solomon Islanders kite fishing and 35 years later finally get to see it , thanks to UA-cam .
Its wild. I grew up fishing in South Georgia. We tied our kites on ZEBCO 33's.
As a Solomon Islander myself, I am grateful for this wonderful video. I've only heard stories of this fishing technique but thanks to this video, I can now see how it is done. Besides the fishing, the song is great too. Thanks for documenting this.
Amazing case study for how valuable videos like this can be. I wish you success with your own videos :)
amazing. first time watched fishing without using a hook but spider web. kite made of leaf.. even wet kite could fly.
It is wonderful that we have documentary filmmakers to share with outsiders not only the skills but that the ancient traditions are not being lost...
Follow nature and you’ll feel in harmony again.! God bless from Chile!!❤️
What a care free beautiful life
Never missed a video uploaded by Slice, it's one of my top 5 favourite channel on UA-cam and I love watching every bit of it.
As a student of Anthropology, I want to know the other four channels. Thanks in advance sir.
Was very fortunate to spend 6 weeks in the Solomons in the late 70's, the absolute epitome of a tropical paradise,
blew my mind. Boys would canoe to the small island we were on most days, with lobsters, bananas and freshly
cooked bread they bake in a kind of stone oven in the ground. I could have stayed there for the rest of my life, people
truly friendly.
And many of the boys had bright blond hair, some genetic thing, looks really weird but beautiful too.
Also visited another island where the kids had never seen a white man before, they sat a few steps away from us
and just watched us! True paradise.
TOURISM DESTROYES NOTHING LEFT UNTOUCHED
I think we should teach them how to be modern and show them things like Facebook and twitter. I want to show these people fashion and my rolex
@@johnbuffaloiam9741 I'm sure modernity
has well and truly caught up with them by now but I'm not sure that is a good thing for their culture?
I loved the proud look on the chiefs face when the boy got his kite up and going by himself. Great video.
Sustainability was and still is to those whom have retained and kept current the way to live lightly in our environments.
Sadly many of us only fragments of knowledge and applications if anything like our Solomon Is.
Kia ora koutou katoa from Aotearoa/NZ
@@ChrisJohnson-gz1vlpeople from all over the world have interest in the techniques, which are tradition for some and could become a sustainable future as well. Respect to those who study and teach this knowledge, beyond a superficial level
Pretty crummy kite. Should get a real one like a Prism Bora 7
Reminds me of my grandfather how he taught me how to hunt for living up the in mountains of Northern Philippines. Things are changing fast in this modern world and I hope these indigenous education of passing down knowledge is not going to fade away too soon.
The old man is so happy and lucky. The small boy is a fast learner.!!
Kite fishing began over 4000yrs ago, first models were leaves with sticks used to fish outside a reef from inside, there are examples that survived. As a kitemaker & sailor also studied Polynesian navigation concepts part of the history as kites became sails.
Nice video, thx 🍺
yeah these are not polynesian
How did you know that it started 4000 yrs ago?
@@2023crosshair-wa6Mn The evidence is surviving examples in museums, my books on this in storage, don't recall the dating methods.
What are the names of the books?
Very interesting. I have to dig more into it. May the Pacific continent prosperate also in future
must be a lot of pressure on Jay at such a young age to embody the legend of fikafika, but it's clear he has the spirit and strength to do it. what a great video!
When I was a little kid I used to tie some fishing line and a swimbait jig to my shark kite at the beach and let it hang over the water about 100 feet out and catch fish all day in the surf, I had a big brain moment when I thought of putting the two things I love most together.
I learned about this years later and it always makes me smile.
I love This kind of documentary 💞
Then just watch 🤣😂😛
Wow! wonderful story and fantastic filming ! in my humble opinion its a World Heritage Award winning Documentary 🏆🏆⭐⭐SLICE is best ! Thanks a lot 🙏
There is something mesmerizing about this place, Solomon Is. One of the most beautiful. Deep blue sky, equally blue sea water, sand and trees in the background. Clarity.
What a great traditional way of living- natural and beautiful 👍🏻
Such a beautiful people God bless them.
Love it, simple life and this way of life is not going to last with the influence of the Chinese in the Pacific island,
Thankyou for this video. I am from PNG and a proud Pacific Islander. We are brothers and connected by sea.
I know more than usual about Pacific islands and they are no. 1.
Legendary fishing
old peoples to new generation we must learn it before they gone
Wonderful video. A boy like this has a natural childhood, in the real nature, without smartphones... Congratulations!!!
The boy has natural BLONDE hair, which is popular in the Solomon Islands.
This man is truly free.
There's something in the narrator's voice that makes me feel so relax. It makes me wanna sleep.
Imagine kite fishing with your grandpa or grandchildren! What an interesting fishing method and lure.
those kids getting out oif the sea into their boat is insane, i can barley get out my pool
The kid has natural BLONDE hair, which is popular in the Solomon Islands.
The kid has natural BLONDE hair, which is popular in the Solomon Islands.
The boy is very striking with the contrasting cinnamon colored hair. What a cool way to fish. Our society needs to take note of the generational knowledge being passed down.
As a Brasilian that used to fly kites when kid was I, Amazing do I find this.
What they are doing is beyond Amazing! The tradition, the art, the way of life and everything they do everyday with a strong belief of the spirits and their ancestors, those are MAGNIFICENT! They even snapped the fish right away everytime they caught one! HUGE RESPECT 👏🏻
This is beautiful to see , the people who own the land, how they respect nature..In my country South Africa in 1948, Europeans came with guns that can kill 100s of animals in a minute and fishing vessels that can kill 1000 of sea species in 5 minutes...It is strange to see the very same people presenting themselves as nature conversationists today...and calling local hunters with dogs..illegal poachers..
Literally they did almost all over the earth - from India, tamilnadu
Noooo! Not Dory!!🐠 Great documentary tho. So interesting to see how other cultures live and traditions get passed down from one generation to another.
Lol...was shocked to see the blue tang fish as well
That's EXACTLY what I said! @Darnel Lee Kiaha
The ease of my mind thanks to these videos please don't stop
That man is so full of knowledge. So much respect and admiration for their way of life
The elderly man is very patient in teaching young boy, Jay. Im from the neighboring Island of Santa Ana and related to the people of Santa Catalina. Unfortunately I don't know kite fishing.
Happiest kid in the entire world
Fishing, Kayaking, playing kite with his granddad
and all of those in very beautiful sea
Now all they need to do is make 2 line stunt kites
I am attracted to doing things with natural fibers. It's the act of doing art that's so much fun. I love this video!
We Melanesians are unique, I'm Papua New Guinean 🇵🇬 . We share borders with Solomon Islands. To say Chinese invented the kite is a cheap shot.
This was a very inspiring documentary 💯
How many of you repeat that song (1:37 - 1:57) ? Uff ! That feeling.. 🤗
That blue fish at the beginning, wow the most beautifully strange fish i ever saw
Im from philippines and this is the most imposible increadible fishing ive ever seen in my life 🙏🙏
We catch the same fish here in Denmark, they come to spawn in the fjords.
We use silk threads instead of hooks or spiderweb
Don't know why they pull the web outward to untangle the fish, we pull the opposite direction when fishing with silk
what a beautiful way of life and family.
Good on you Wapo for passing on our traditional methods of fishing to our young generation s. You are noble wauwe. Mauru koro.
awesome video of anthropological interest, a great uncle mentoring his grand nephew on kite fishing makes for a wonderful story, thank you SLICE (checkmark)
I remember some of my early trips with my dad. Best times. He doesnt get mad at the kid but he keeps letting him try. Cool stuff
It is great to learn traditional fishing method. It is one way of sustainable harvesting of our sea resources. Very educational video indeed!
I love how the uncle chuckles while the nephew struggles to remove the web from the needle fishes mouth. No translation needed
Take a kid fishing and really enjoy life.
The kid has natural BLONDE hair, which is popular in the Solomon Islands.
25 years ago I saw an anthropological documentary on this topic, which was the most rustic on the subject of fishing with kites.
I have the impression that Chief Wapo was the one who introduced the technique to the French TV crew of that time.
This documentary of today is the one that comes closest to that old one that I consider the best and the original.
Congratulations on the quality of the record. You managed to cover the rite of passage.
Every child in the USA should subscribe to your channel. They are so in need of seeing the bigger picture and how happy people can be living a less commercialized existence. Subscribed and belled.👍 awesome. Will be watching more.
Beautiful Documentary. Love the background track too... 🧡
So crazy this video popped up! I just just thinking that i wanted to try this technique with a drone yesterday!
get to go fishing, sailing and kiting with someone you love....awesome

Wow, thank you ❤ beautiful documentary of my Melanesian people ❤🇵🇬
Thanks for sharing your skills. Fikafika Fishing. Amazing skills. Ofa atu to people of Solomon👍😊
RIP🙏 DORY. You played a major part in finding Nemo.😅
😂
Merci pour ce très beau cours de pêche et la beauté de ces personnes
When the boy was spinning the web on the stick I would bet that grandpa at one point was saying good job good job in there language haha! You could see the boy was nervous but happy when he did it!
Those are really special moments for Jay..
Gar are caught with the same type baits. Their narrow jaws with fine teeth get caught in the tiny filaments of string.
As a Solomon Islander myself, I'm learning something new from my fellow wantoks.
Thank you for the video Appreciate it as helps documents the tradition On a nearby Island of Ulawa, they use fine nylon strand (wool-like) without kite and catch the great marlins.
Superb !!!
Heart ❤️ Touching
We used it in Aotearoa too before colonization
This makes fishing fun Love it this gives me idea how to fish far from shore to drop my bait far off shores 😊

Very interesting documentary. I love them all. It sounds a bit foreboding in regards to J's parents. It makes me sad for him. I do wonder where they are and what they are doing. or what's happened. I hope he grows to be a very strong man. Thank you for this documentary!
Love it ! Thank you for this amazing documentary
Seeing this reminds me of my own eternity of lifetimes and experiences. I hope to live the island life again. In this lifetime that is.
It’s worth waiting for, so if not in this lifetime, that’s ok too. Will someone take me to the Solomon Islands? Please and MANY thanks.
sometimes I want a very simple life like them, with the thoughts that I have with all the flaws around.
Grandpa is wise and patient. Boy is smart and lovely.
Eating fish make u smart it’s a fact😊
This is very interesting to say the least it's like you're looking into centuries ago.
The South Pacific is the biggest ocean in the world. The traditional life of Melanesia comes from the sea. Watching all the way from Vanuatu 😁
fell in love with this one 😍😍
Love this. I have caught fish on blobs of nylon netting, without a hook. It gets stuck in their teeth. A bit like...
And grandpa either did not have any sons or his sons died and he gets to pass on this amazing skill to his grandson..... What a pleasure for the both of them this must be.... I am hurt thinking of this current day in age where the majority of kids in the US would complain to no end if "Grandpa" wanted to pick the up to go kite fishing... We must all work harder at being better parents.
Maybe they left the island
Second time watching this...absolutely fascinating.
So fascinating to watch. I wish these people well.
Great story for a Great legend
Beautiful history. When I was a littler kid, my father teached me to fish ...
Two things I'd love to do for eternity put together. Awesome.
wow! that is SERIOUS skill!
ingenious!
♥️🙏♥️
Very nice documentary video👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Beautiful family god bless you all 🙏🙏😘💐
Nice video. On the history. Make more, I'd like to see more about how these people live.
It's unbelievable!!. New experience for me. ।thanks for video
