  • Here is how to remove and replace the upper and lower intake manifolds and gaskets on a 2005 chevy monte carlo with a 3.8L engine. This procedure should be the same for any GM made vehicle with the 3.8L 3800 series engine like the Buick Lesabre, Chevy Impala etc.

    I have a 1999 Chevy Monte Carlo Z34 with the 3800. I have exactly the same fluid leak and nobody including some friends that are quite good mechanics could figure it out. YOU DID!
    Thanks so much for the very detailed, clear and unshaky video. I am a film producer for the Motorsports industry and think you did a great job. Thank you very much.

    That is not the way to install thermostat seal. The seal goes around the thermostat inside a groove that is in the seal.

    This three part series you have put together is outstanding!
    I have a 2001 Buick Lesabre 3.8L 3800... And I had issues from the get go when trying to work on the engine.
    In a twisted way, you having to do the job again made me feel so much better... Lol!
    No offense, it's just that I find myself turning into a sailor because everything I have touched went wrong.
    I'm a beginner, but with the help of your videos, I am confident I can conquer this engine.

    nice job dude! a couple of days ago i took my upper intake manifold off to clean it and it needed it and at the same time i cleaned my throttle body, air filter and my mass air flow sensor and it made a difference in doing that. I was starting to clean my lower intake but decided not to and it needed it but I think it will be ok. I really want to get me a performance lower intake manifold for more performance that way my after market intake air filter can benefit, but overall very good video!

    You're the man!! I made the mistake of buying the plastic gasket which is a piece of shit. Now I have a friend who has a 2000 century who needs the same thing done. It's not that simple on that motor (3100 series) you have to loosen the rocker arms to remove the lower intake manifold gasket. I hate that motor design. Once again thanks for saving me almost a thousand dollars in labor 🤑😁🇺🇸.

    Great videos my friend. After watching all 3 of your vids, I now have hope. I plan to watch all 3 vids again before I attempt to do mines. I have an oil leak that is finding it's way into my radiator & reservoir causing my 2002 monte carlo ss to overheat badly. My radiator & reservoir has brown milky substance in it. The strange thing is the coolant does not appear to be going into my engine oil. When I pull out the dip stick to check the oil, my engine oil is clean & clear. I know for a fact it's not transmission fluid in the radiator so I have ruled that out. I had some people tell me they do not know what's causing this. Some have told me I have a crack engine block. Anyway, thanks again for the videos.

    • @myRatchets
      @myRatchets  9 років тому +1

      +305Navi Cracked engine block is possible, but you need to check your engine oil cooler for sure, its the only other area where pressurized engine oil and coolant are next to each other and if there's a crack only engine oil leaks to the coolant side because engine oil is under alot more pressure. Besides that it could be trans oil leaking into coolant in the radiator which you have ruled out. GL

Got lucky an it didnt hurt anything after a good flush an new fluids. Boy I was lucky. But on my old car I also had same prob, oil mixed with antifreeze but not antifreeze in the oil. It was my lower intake. It all depends on where the gasket breaks at also etc. Goodluck

I have watched all three video at least half dozen times and now think I can tackle it myself. I'm going to take a lot of pictures and drawings of every thing I do. For $25 at autozone etc. Along with the vid you can def do it. Hopefully it's fixed an still going. They run forever if taken care of an get them stock junk gaskets off. An buy the good upgraded gaskets an you'll never have to worry again. Gl

    I have a 2003 Chevy Impala v6 3.8L that idles at 2,000RPM and basically steps on it's own gas when I drive. I watched this video because you do a very good job of explaining the parts. What is the vacuum hose that is hooked up to the throttle body and the fuel pressure regulator also hooked up to? In checking mine, I broke the hose (it was pretty brittle). I need to get a replacement, but don't know where to find one. Kind of new on car repair.

    • @johngracejr9436
      @johngracejr9436 5 років тому

      Ya car idling that high is definitely a vacuum leak, giving the motor more air, which in turn makes it about like your pushing the gas pedal a little. Junkyards usually have alot of parts if you look around hard enough u should find what ya need. Hope ya did. Gl

I'd take a pic of where it is on motor, and the part itself. As u can take it off in minutes. An try a junkyard, any GM car 98-2005 should have that Same exact part u need buddy. Hope u found it. Just noticed comment is very old 😂

    My car died last week. It may be old but I take good care of it. I suspect it is upper intake manifold related. Pulled it off today. Don't see any cracks or distortion. Would it have been something as simple as the bolts got loose with time? There was a ton of coolant on top of the lower intake manifold and in the #6 cylinder. Stuck a nylon tube into the plug hole and sucked what I could out with a shop vac. I ordered new plenum gasket (upper intake gasket) and new plugs. I noticed you didn't mess with the head gaskets. Is there a sure fire way to tell if the head gasket or the plenum gasket is the culprit? There was no external leak. Had already replaced the "plastic elbows" with the same aluminum ones a few years ago.

    Your videos helped me change the timing belt on my 07 Galant, and now this will be a great help for my 08 Grand Prix when the time comes. By the looks of things it's hard to get any kind of lower intake that's not made by Doorman anymore unless you want to pay $500 at the dealer, so I'll definitely be going to the junkyard if at all possible, but otherwise just hope that my lower isn't too badly corroded. I'm seeing some wetness on the side of the engine facing forward when I look beneath the right side dog bone bracket, so I'm thinking one of or both of the gaskets might be starting to go, but there's nothing on the floor and nothing in the oil so if that is the problem I'm not gonna mess with it just yet. Any other thoughts on what it might be? Seeing as it's the right side and not the left, I don't know what else would be leaking coolant wise other than the t stat which I already changed.

  • @saxmonster
    @saxmonster 9 років тому

    So, just so I understand there is no coolant running through the black upper intake except where the throttle body is on the drive side. Was there a gasket there you had to replace too on the throttle body? Also there is coolant running through all of the lower intake right? Did you have to do anything special when the oil and coolant mixed with that bad intake? I assume just drain oil and put fresh in? DO you think there is still some coolant in the oil parts or does it eventually get clean out by the filter and putting new oil in again? Great job on the video thinking about tackling it myself. I have a leak by the throttle body and my mechanic found another one on the front lower intake.

    • @myRatchets
      @myRatchets  9 років тому +2

      Scott Murdock If I remember correctly yes, top intake on the throttle body and there is a gasket between throttle body and top intake. Lower intake is where more than likely you have a leak if coolant is in your crankcase, drain and refill run engine for 30 seconds. Drain and refill again and you should be good. But check oil condition and repeat as necessary. You dont want to leave any significant amount of coolant in your oil. GL

  • @timkyle7866
    @timkyle7866 9 років тому +1

    Nicely done!!! Getting ready to attempt to do mine. the leak appears to be the plastic 90* elbow that is visible easily. Not certain if I will replace them (the 2 elbows) only or do the entire process. A mechanic told me that he has done many and knows of none that have gone +120k miles without gaskets being changed. I have 180k, I replaced radiator (I think the radiator was the first part coming down the assembly line as everything seems to be attached to it) in about 5 hours. Could not find most of the tools needed. TOTALLY DISORGANIZED. No leaks at any rate. I'll sleep on it.
    and yes RTV not recommended on gaskets except the corners of the single flat gasket on either end of the block. One gasket cannot be made to fit economically.

    Great video. I’m about to do this same job, I think. If I am getting coolant in my air cleaner box when turning car over do you think it’s the upper intake gasket at the throttle body or go ahead and replace both upper and lower? Also car will not start, a lot of coolant pours out the bottom of air cleaner box.

    • @johngracejr9436
      @johngracejr9436 5 років тому

      Ya I'd def say something is plugged up in that upper intake. Where the throttle body hooks to it, thats only 2 spots where antifreeze flows thru. Sure it's fixed by now. If not surely I can help. I've changed a few of these an doing another now on my older 02 impala. But yes probably the upper intake. Which is easy as pie to fix. Seems hard but with these vids and a Haynes manual from autozone etc for $20-$25 it gives step by step instructions with pics even etc and you could surely change that upper intake easy. Goodluck

    • @johngracejr9436
      @johngracejr9436 5 років тому

      If it's not the upper intake it could possibly be plugged up on the throttle body side maybe, nvr saw that but notsure what else it would be. Actually make sure you've changed your thermostat recently. If they go bad, it will not let coolant circulate through motor an could possibly end up backing up thru throttle body and into air duct an then into the air filter box. Nvr saw that b4! But shouldnt be a hard fix. Goodluck

Have to be very careful setting the lower intake on them gaskets. It shld set on once an be all lined rite up. If moved around the gaskets will move an could cause this. Unless you have a head gasket blown. Which is possible. But hopefully not! Gl

    Hey how's it going? I have a 02 impala ls that is leaking oil on the right side down by the lower intake. I changed my oil sending unit switch already. I was told that it could be my lower intake gasket. Do you think so as well. I was also told it could be a blown head gasket. I do have blue smoke coming outta the tailpipe. The car idles roughly while driving. Can you let me know whether it's the lower intake gasket or the head gasket? Lastly there's no milkiness in my radiator or in my oil if that helps. Get back with your suggestion plz thanks!!!!!!

    • @johngracejr9436
      @johngracejr9436 5 років тому

      The oil leak could def be the end seals as he said at end of the vid. On either side them end seals on lower intake can leak oil their if go bad. The rubber part he put on just b4 the new gaskets. When he used silicone on the corners and stuff. As far as running rough, it's most likely a sensor, like the mass air flow which are well known to go bad and a simple cheap fix also. Hope ya got er fixed up.

    • @johngracejr9436
      @johngracejr9436 5 років тому +2

      If it was head gasket it would have alot of white smoke coming out your exhaust, blue just means its older prolly an burning a little oil. Usually no big deal at all. But also the valve cover gaskets (easy fix) can cause a oil leak alot more commonly than the lower intake end seal. And way easier hope it's fixed an running good. These motors will run til the frame rusts an breaks if u take care of them etc. My fav motor ever. Reliable as heck. Only.flaw is that darn intake gaskets. But if u change the stock to upgraded good 1s it will nvr need changed again. Gl

      Only a little silicone, sealant whatever ya wanna call it on the 4 corners where side seals meet with the gaskets.

    GM dealer gave you the wrong part. Should have been 89017816 not 89017825 ( which is for supercharged version of 3.8L.

      +Ray Fraser Are you saying this is why the coolant leaked into the crankcase, and it was not the new lower intake manifold? I'm replacing the upper plenum and the lower intake manifold gaskets right now on my 03 bonneville and I noticed the new lower gaskets don't look quite right and I may have been given the wrong ones from advance auto. I'm going to double check before I put it back together and hopefully avoid a huge ass-ache of having to redo it!!

      Acdelco part number on his package is for the a supercharged intake which is different than a nonsupercharged gasket. After looking at a Felpro aluminum gasket I bought an Acdelco aluminum gasket from a GM dealer because the aluminum was thicker and more like original plastic gaskets. In video he blames problem incorrectly on manifold not realizing he had the wrong gasket.

      Ya sounds about right to me. Smh, darn auto stores shld of made sure aswell on which part he wanted. Theirs alot more not supercharged 3800s than their are ones with the supercharger. Crazy

    Thermostat gasket goes around the thermostat not on top.

      Sorry but you're wrong. The gasket does go on top. The thermostat housing compresses the gasket on top of the thermostat to make a seal.

      What u mean? Thermostat didnt cause this repair. Lol. And the thermostat can be changed just by removing the thermostat housing, 2 10mm bolts and pop.the new 1 in. Can get to it without removing anything! Besides the plastic cover over the motor. I can change the thermostat in literally 10mins. Goodluck

      Not many cars u can change the entire intake manifold in a cpl hrs if you know what your doing, or even just learn off vids like this and buy a Haynes manual for your car. Shows how to change anything with pics etc step by step for $20-$25, goodluck

      Use the vids an fix it. Really very simple if know anything about a car, even the basics, buy a Haynes manual for your make an model of car and it has directions step by step, and pics even etc. $20-$25, and it really helps a ton. Then with vids etc too, the upper intake is a piece of cake

      Sry just realised this is very old surely u had it fixed by now Haha. But really with today's technology at your hands most tasks besides a motor change or maybe head gasket even etc almost any1 can do them if they spend a bit learning. Goodluck hope ya got the prob solved

      Most likely. I'd atleast take the upper intake off if cant find the leak anywhere else. And usually if the gaskets real bad to leak u can find the bad spot in the old gasket to make sure it was the problem then use the vid or a Haynes manual for your car to fix it. Goodluck. Them Haynes manuals are amazing. Shows how to change anything on these cars an motors. Also the 3.1L an 3.4L but I love the 3.8/3800 fav motor ever. Simple intake once fixed with the upgraded gaskets and you never gotta worry again. The gaskets they came with were poor quality. Goodluck
