    Jesus Christ, how thin does your roster have to be to have Sting, Luger, Savage, *and* Flair all do double-duty on a PPV where you bring in seven wrestlers from another company?

    • @EScoglio
      @EScoglio 3 роки тому +23

      I don't know if it was thin, but on TV, the justification is that since they want their big stars in the World Cup, they also want the title match, thus all 4 of those guys should have to pull at least double duty to make it an even playing field. Savage is in the World Cup and is working hurt, so Sting and Luger and Flair have to go through each other to get the shot. If they just made it Flair vs Savage, it's not fair to Savage for Flair to just come in fresh. So Luger and Sting and Flair have to also work matches in the name of fair play.

      They just brought in Malenko, Benoit, Eddie, Disco a few months before too. No Hogan and Dungeon Of Doom, I think Anderson and other regular midcarders were missing too, since WCW guys here were only faces iirc. No Renegade either lol

      WCW's roster was actually bulbous in late 1995. The dilemma was more that Bischoff wanted to have his best wrestlers on the show instead of putting on another Craig Pittman/Cobra or Big Bubba/Jim Duggan that would annoy the audience. Though, ironically, you do need those kinds of matches to make the others feel even bigger in hindsight.

      Just from Memphis alone: Jerry Lawler? Flair himself? (Yes, he was born in Memphis! And actually was victim of a baby trafficking ring, but that's another story entirely...) Aretha Franklin? Sputnik Monroe might not be a native, but what he did for desegregation in Memphis surely is worthy of great praise and an honorary title as a Memphian?

    I get where you're coming from with the Luger/Sting thing, but it gets REALLY good in 1996 when they're tag champs and Luger's trying to pretend he's a good guy. Unfortunately, it doesn't get any resolution because of some other thing that happened nobody remembers, but it was fun while it lasted.

    Every time I think of Starrcade 95, I think of it as the perfect middle of the road show. A show that I picture instantly when I think of Pay Per Views I would grade a C. It had some good matches, it had some bad matches, it had some mediocre matches, and it all boils down to a show that's pretty meh. Good idea, somewhat shaky execution to put it nicely.

    This show's main problem was that most of the Japanese wrestlers I had no idea who they were. Chono and Liger I know who they were b/c they were big international stars in their own right, the others I didnt know and wasnt watching NJPW at that time. The other thing is and I know Eric was all about trying new things, but he really should have had a few matches that had nothing to do with the WC concept sprinkled in there. While this show did have a Flair-Savage main event, I dont think that this benefited from it. That match itself wasnt very good. Honestly I think I would have given it a C- if I was the one doing the grading, but I understand the D+, this show deserves that.

    I think you vastly underrated this PPV, as I'd give it at least a B-. It's not great, but what worked, really worked. In particular, I thought the triangle match was pretty well-worked, at least for the era. It was a very interesting bit of psychology with Flair as the clear heel, Sting as the clear face, and Luger as the tweener. Flair/Savage was one of their weaker matches, but it was still decent enough. And I enjoyed most of the WCW/New Japan matches, especially Benoit v Liger and Guerrero v. Ootani.

    Funny how if any US promotion did something like this today. That the New Japan guys would get just as big of a pop if not an even larger one then any of the guys in the US promotion. I would imagine bigger for most every case seeing how they would be guys that the audience would hardly ever get to see live if ever. Only way they wouldn't get a bigger pop is if they were a heel that was amazing at their job of getting heat compared to the cool heel like most are who can get heat in Japan due to a different crowd but would get cheered here. Or if they were just a lower card guy, young talent or facing someone in the promotion that was over as fuck.

    • @wisewolftony

      @@attiepollard7847 I mean that's what I said towards the end of my comment. That if they were a lower card guy or just someone who isn't that popular then the home promotion talent would get the bigger pop. My main thing was just thinking about like say they had Hang Man Page vs Okada. That despite Hang Man being very much over with the AEW crowd. That Okada would get the bigger pop due to how popular he is and the fact that the AEW audience rarely ever gets the chance to see him live. Compared to back then when almost none of the WCW fans had any clue who these NJPW guys were. And then add in the fact that WCW promoted the NJPW as the heels trying to take over.

      It's true. Sonny knew exactly what the WCW audience wanted in a stereotypical Japanese heel manager and he leaned in hard. I remember sometimes he's bring a camera along and take selfies with whoever he was managing on the way to the ring because Japanese folks love cameras. right? He'd cut promos about trying to buy everything (that being a big bugaboo at the time). He'd cut promos about trying to buy wrestlers' contracts, buy whole WCW shows, etc. The man helped get some heat on a legion of otherwise boring, interchangeable midcard heels. What a boss.

    Kinda funny that Hogan contractually limited himself to working only 4 PPVs a year and thus prevented him from participating in Starrcade, WCW's Wrestlemania. We're talking about the same guy whose "retirement" angle closed Wrestlemania VIII instead of the WWF title match and whom insisted on an impromptu title match in IX that robbed Bret Hart of an establishing champion moment. The man never saw a limelight he didn't want to steal. But at least it saves us from most of the Dungeon of Doom nonsense and put the focus on the other performers. It really felt like the WCW was divided between Hogan's cartoony BS and everything else going on at the time.

      Surprisingly, the rule was in place until February 1998 when they announced off hand on a Thunder that they had waived the rule completely. Up until the rise of the nWo and cruiserweight division, it was more of a regular occurrence though still sparse.
      You'd maybe see it once or twice in a month at best. The announcers would at least still call it out sometimes if someone was thrown over and the match didn't end but many times would cover saying it was their own momentum that took them over or the ref didn't see it etc. By 98 it was surprising they even brought it up to officially waive the rule as it was used so rarely that it could have been phased out without even mentioning it.
