- Recently we managed to get our old, cheap Russian / Soviet analog / film Zenit-E (Zenith-E) (with M42 thread Helios 44-2 58mm f2 lens) slr camera fixed, got a roll of Kodak GOLD 200 film and went to the woods to try and capture some photos. Come along and see how well (or poorly) we did. Oh we made some big mistakes along the way! But also learned a lot and had a really good time. Thanks to Radek Zawadzki for scanning the film and all the tips along the way!

All clips were shot by ourselves using Sony A7III with a 35mm f1.8 prime Sony lens and A6600 with 16-35mm f4 Sony Zeiss zoom lens.

@@POVPHOTOGUY it's fun! You should definitely try it, and when you do show us the results :) you can also get a more user friendly camera for a smoother start. We're no experts but it really is something unique.
Those images scream Helios-44. Can't miss that beautiful swirly bokeh. Absolutely legendary lens.

Nice video guys. My workmate gave me his Dad's Zenit, and I shot a roll of B&W on it. The anticipation of seeing the results is intense!
And had so much fun, just slowing down, shooting with intent, and the analogue experience of loading, winding and rewinding the film brought back memories!

I enjoyed your attitude towards experiencing using film. I have been taking photos using film since I was about eight years old in the late 1940’s. When I was in high school I used a 4x5 sheet film press camera to make photos for the school newspaper and yearbook. There’s something about developing a roll of film and seeing the results. It’s very gratifying. I recently bought a Kiev camera and I am planning on using it soon. Good luck with your channel. I like your enthusiasm.

analogue photography is the most exciting form of photography and the purest. Today it's so dull, you just shoot, and shoot and shoot until you get something you think you like... then you get it home and decide you don't like it because you just didn't feel the photo. but with analogue, especially really old analogue, the sort I love to do on 80-100 year old cameras, you put a vast amount of effort into each shot, but the results really do reward you. Yes you screw up quite a bit, but are you a real photographer if everything goes 100% right 100% of the time?
My worst mistake was taking my Zeiss Ikon Super Ikonta circa 1935, out for a shoot, and running off 2 rolls before realising the bellows had a 1mm hole in which ruined around 40% of the shots I'd spent an afternoon seeking out and framing properly.
i do highly recommend getting the oldest camera you can, and trying to teach yourself you get as good a shot as they did in the 1900s/20s/30'
that is for sure the most interesting approach we saw here :) We admire giving so much love and effort into the craft. While digital photography has it's place (for example in reporter's work or events etc.) the analogue is the absolute win for art and being present while shooting. And the outcome is always exciting one way or another. Even seemingly ruined shots are sometimes works of art themselves.

@@zavadventures Yeah we can imagine! We actually have a few analogue cameras knocking about too and this has inspired to get them out again! Bart used to take some analogue shots but hasn't touched them in a long time, so we will have to give them a go! Once again though - loved the video. Great work!

@@zavadventures OOOO that would be amazing! Yeah definitely. We have them on our shelves as decoration - we have 2x Zenit, Praktica & an Asahi Pentax. All 35mm SLRs. We actually have one, really nice lens as well with them - a 58mm f/2 which we have used on our DSLRs before. One of them has a light leak but unfortunately I can't remember which one, so we will have to do some testing..
Woah! That’s a nice set! You won the contest of best stocked armory :D We only have two working analogues and shot only with one and one lens! Zenit + Helios. And we actually thought to put Helios lens on top of our Sony. It would look unique with its swirly bokeh. Do you have an adapter for this?

rób to co Ci sprawia największą frajdę :) my się super wciągnęliśmy w filmy no i też nie mamy takiej okolicy do zdjęć jak Ty ;) ale jak coś ukręcisz to wrzucaj bo fajnie Ci wychodzą filmy jak już w końcu je zrobisz.
oh, That camera is my love! I hade that as my first camera, the lens is gold and the feel of it was awesome, especially the solar panel light meter that was quite well working, but I got rid of the camera because it gave sometimes black bars to the side of the exposures due to a faulty shutter curtain.
The Helios lens is absolutely stunning! We recently even adapted it and mounted on our digital camera. It’s just magical! 🤯
Sorry to hear about the faulty shutter but this seems to be a common issue. We had to replace one in our camera as well. We even had to replace the whole prism 😉 but it was totally worth it in the end.

The Helios 44-2 Lens Version You should Avoid Buying. There is a big difference in the 1st (oldest) helios lens model and the ones you and i have.. in he's video at 4:33 he shows the sharpness difference.
Interesting. There are for sure also huge differences between every single lens. They can be worn out or dirty. We have two Helios 44-2 lenses which belonged to our grandparents. One is literally useless (dust inside, something like oily spots everywhere inside the glass...) but the second one is in decent shape. I don't mind it's not sharp. I'd even say it is a strong look that sometimes is highly desired. Only for stylistic purposes though. The backlit flares and artefacts are also so strong that it is beautiful on one hand, but usable only in certain shooting scenarios on the other.
That was my first camera and I still have it!! I think I'll try to shoot with it again

I'm so happy You both forced Yourselves to try it out! Atmosphere of choosing and loading the film, shooting and then developing is always something out of this world.
Next time I suggest You to try kodak Portra 400 - even with helios lens it generates amazing picture!
I'm not sure - did You use an original sound of Zenit shutter to show us the pictures? I've always avoided Russian cameras just for my mental health sake, so I cannot tell :D

We actually didn't have to force ourselves but we did have to prepare and repair the camera so it took some time ;) and you are absolutely right that the feeling is out of this world. Amazing experience.
We actually searched for Kodak Portra 400 but it wasn't available anywhere nearby so we went for the one that was within quick grasp to learn the ways of the analog camera.
The shutter on the forest b-roll sequence is original. The rest is not. Yeah we heard many stories of these cameras breaking the film and other bad stuff. But the nostalgia of using and old family camera is worth it! And surprisingly this lens is quite fantastic. We even searched for the adapter for Sony for it to shoot some video in the retro style. Maybe some day ;)

Film has a higher resolution than most digital cameras.
It’s quite hard to compare these two media. Completely different things in a lot of aspects

dzięki Radek! (Hey all, go follow that guy!) Zobaczymy jak z tymi polaroidami będzie. Narazie całkiem dobrze się bawimy instaxem więc może faktycznie! Ale też mamy STARTa do uruchomienia więc też ciekawy temat i całkowita nowość - patrzeć z góry w aparat :D
Przez Was teraz muszę zabrać tacie jeden z jego wielu analogowych aparatów i zobaczyć co mi wyjdzie. PS Dajcie znać kiedy „Night with Hair” wyląduje gdzieś na wystawie w muzeum 😂
Koniecznie! Z naszego doświadczenia nie będzie miał nic przeciwko a wręcz będzie zachęcał ;) tylko musisz się liczyć, że coś tam będzie trzeba naprawić jeśli długo nie były używane. Ale to znów nie są duże koszty. Haha damy znaka ale nie mamy zbyt wygórowanych oczekiwań :D
