- Anders Lassen was a Dane who fought in the British Commandos and SAS in the Second World War. He was the only non-Commonwealth recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy. But who was this man?

As a dane and a history buff, i knew the story about Lassen. Thank you for telling his story again. By the way, 3 danes won the Victoria Cross in WW1. :) Cheers from Denmark.
Thanks for that Kim - and I didn’t know about the 3 Danes in WW1 winning the VC - I’ll look it up 🙌🏻
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare
Here is some additional information that you may find interesting.
When Denmark was invaded, approximately 250 Danish ships and some 6000 sailors went into allied service. Of these 136 ships and about 1000 sailors were lost during the war.
After the war, Anders Lassens mother wrote a book about her son.
In it, there is a passage from his diary in 1942 when Major Gus March-Phillipps, the founder of No. 62 Commando, died during operation Aquatint, in which Lassen wasn’t participating.
“The only man I really liked and respected. He died fighting, leading his men - a worthy death for him. I wish I had been with him when it went wrong. All the other times we fought together - only not this last. Greatest sorrow I have had in this war - my best friend is dead”
Ahh I was aware of this book by his mother, Suzanne: Anders Lassen VC - The Story of a Courageous Dane… There’s an English translation but it’s long out of print and we couldn’t find a copy. The diary entry you quote (and the facts about the Danish shipping) is so very poignant and would have been so good to have included in this presentation for more context. Thanks very much for relating it here…
I wonder why there is no movie about this man, his story is fantastic. Thank you for a great video
Coming soon via Guy Ritchie

What a fantastic man you would want him on your side in a tight spot it's a shame that he never made it through ❤
Such a young hero... RIP Thanks again for sharing this video.
What a man!!! Great stuff. Really enjoyed that!
Thanks for watching 😄🙌🏻
Ideal candidate for the commandos.
Excelent presentation. I had never heard of Lassen. Great story. Thank you for sharing it. Greetings from Australia.
Glad you enjoyed it Elvira - happy new year 🍷🍾
Read about this man from Churchill’s Secret Warriors by Damien Lewis and The SBS In World II by Gavin Mortimer.
Thank you for another excellent and engrossing presentation!!! As I was growing up, this tough hero was an idol of mine. He along with Wing Commander Yeo-Thomas and several Resistance fighters were what I looked up to while my friends spoke of comic book heroes and sports players. I cannot express how much I enjoyed this video on this lesser known but shining warrior.
Thanks again Josie - you had a great cast of characters there to look up to. I only heard of Anders relatively recently - but what a character. Reminds me a lot of Blair Mayne
@OdysseusFiles Oh yes, I think Mayne and he were definitely cut from the same cloth. They perhaps would have never been appreciated if not for the times they found themselves in. Men such as them are what we need during war and we were blessed to have them. Thank you for all the time and dedication you put into your videos. We all sincerely appreciate it. 🙏
Yes, and we seem to have been blessed to have had quite a few like them. Just finishing off a thing on Carton de Wiart - another extremely interesting chap…
@@UlyssesFiles I will be looking forward to seeing it. Thank you for all that you do.
@@justjosie1163 Hi Josie have u seen the new one on Richard Burton the great 19th Century English explorer? Here: ua-cam.com/video/RvBvxQ5zWac/v-deo.htmlsi=zX7NHzZMvyjoe1So
the book about him is very interesting read
Another wonderful video
Thanks again 😍
They should made movie abouth him..i love tv show abouth SAS
Nutters like that are better on the crew than against it.He earned his medals tho..!
😄
Great video sir
Thanks so much 🙌🏻
My father was named after him, im named after him, and so are my boys.
You named multiple kids the same name, lol. You must love this dude
@@Truth-io5lzHe probably named them Anders and Lasse. Lasse is/was a common first name, just as Lassen is a common last name. Lassen basically mean Lasse's son, (søn), just in English, although Lassesen would be more correct. But many Danish surnames are like that.
My wife’s grandfather fort alongside him in the Sas and always spoke very highly of him and what an amazing leader he was, and that he would drive his jeep into hotel lobbies so that no other units would steal it
Thanks for this v interesting anecdote 🙌🏻
Thank you for telling his story! I always wonder what he, and others like him, would have done in Civie Street had they survived the war. Having had the ultimate "Hit" Peace time would probably have been a real disappointment.
Thanks Anthony - yes I wondered the same.
5:51 Lord Jellicoe made a derogative remark about Denmark. Lassen knocked him out.
Not the best thing to say to a man like Anders Lassen… 😅
Says a lot about Lassen - but even more about Jellicoe for not pressing charges - true gentleman spirit.@@UlyssesFiles
Yes agree. Just got on with business 👌🏻
@@carstenf279 Lassen would had kill in him the spot...
The upcoming movie "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare" is loosely based on the 62 commandos. Lassen will be played by Alan Ritchson (Reacher), and he does look truly terrifying in the trailers! Can't wait!
Wow Now, that's a man with boles.
Great content thanks 👍🏻
Thank you 😊🙌🏻
Anders Lassen is my favourite Victoria cross , did you read that book *on courage "
I’m not surprised - he’s such a legend. For my money he’s up there with the likes of Blair “Paddy” Mayne. “Anders Lassen VC the story of a courageous Dane” (1965), the biography by Suzanne Lassen - the English translation is a bit tricky to get hold of. Have you got it/read it?
Of course strictly speaking Paddy Mayne isn’t in the VC list. A travesty though.
@@UlyssesFiles I can't remember properly because I read it so long ago but he had a number of knife kills and was very good with a longbow, I'm not sure if he used one in theatre though. I haven't watched the video properly because we're getting shelled a bit but I will tmrw..cool channel. I have my own I you care for a look.
Ahh I see. I’ll take a look at your channel ☝🏻
You can put a link to your channel here? I can’t find it using your @name
Nice 👍
Excellent 😮
Thanks 😊
He was on the Shetland Bus crew with my Great Grandad.
thank-you again. you have one on Ian Lapraik, SBS ?
Not yet - we will look into him now you mention him though 👌🏻
@@UlyssesFiles all I know was that he was incredibly fast runner even by 1970 standards and probably would have given the best a tough race. would truly appreciate it.
I was just looking him up and he definitely rings a bell 🔔😅… Interesting how he served with Lassen in the SAS/SBS and was involved in the Symi raid, amongst others. Will definitely be looking deeper now.. ☝🏻🙌🏻
@@UlyssesFiles I knew his daughter but she doesn't want to be known, so I am curious re:jock. sorry can't refer you.
Bit of a bloody well hooligan if you ask me.
😂
Sounds like Lassen and Mayne were separated at birth
I was gonna say he seems like a Danish Paddy Mayne, but they covered that. Maybe he will be in season 2 of Rogue Heroes
Cool ❤
Honary Australian by the looks of it
😂
The SAS colonel warning you Aussies about the WEF’ascists in your government and other western governments didn’t get much support so far by Aussies. Say No To WEF’ascism!
He wrote the book on who dares wins, wrnt down in a blaze of glory less than a month before the end of WW2, sadly
☺️👌🏻
Karl haushofer and his part Jewish son Albrecht were also in the resistance
😁👍🏼

Yes 🙌🏻
ADHD clearly. Comes handy in those situations.

Sounds like more post WWII lingering Britsh propaganda to me. From what I heard Larsen was aristocracy, and aristocracy oftentimes received priviledged, false and or exaggered valor commendations.
It’s LASSEN. And in case of the VC no one is handed one without an act of selfless or insane valour. This guy was a bona fide Viking nutter
