Makita MAC700 Air Compressor Review After 10+ years of ownership

- The Makita MAC700 air compressor is an excellent all around portable air compressor. However it’s not flawless. There are some small details which could be better.
In this review I’ll talk about:
General Design and Build Quality
Features I Like
A Couple Small Details I Think Could Be Improved
Air Tools Which Work Well With the Makita MAC700 Air Compressor.
Air tools which are impractical or unusable with the Makita MAC700 air compressor.
Two Air Compressor Accessories Everyone Should Have
Conclusion and Overall Opinion.
At the incredibly reasonable price point of the Makita MAC700 air compressor, some niggling details are not unexpected. Whether or not those minor details are worth paying extra for, is a decision we all have to make for ourselves.
Ultimately, If the Makita MAC700 air compressor I’ve owned for over 10 years ever broke, I’d buy another one without thinking. But the odds of the Makita MAC700 ever breaking of wearing out are nil and I’m sure I’ll be using mine for many more years.

Great review, and thanks for the tips about the air hose and swivel.
You’re welcome! I’m glad you like this video.
A quality and lightweight air hose and a swivel can make just about any compressor easier to deal with.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
on the second oil change, after 5 years, the oil is full of what seems like aluminum powder with some sparkly magnetic steel bits mixed in. still works, but there's a lot of blow-by escaping through the vent in the oil cap, and its days are probably numbered. my guess is old oil + cold weather = oil starvation. change your oil more often than I did, everybody.
Yikes! Thanks for the warning. I appreciate someone who is willing to share information like this. This is a highly useful maintenance reminder for us all.
Thanks for watching and sharing a tip.
torture test!
Great review thanks for sharing!
You’re welcome!

Very useful video. Not just because of the long-term prospective of the tool but because you addressed my specific needs. Great Job! Thank you.
You’re very welcome. Glad I could help.
Really useful to have such a long-term perspective. Thank you!
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching.
Very nice review. You sold me and just got mine! LOVE the sound vs terrifying old PC pancake. Night and day difference! Drain valve is totally fine. Super easy to access and easy to lean over for the seconds to empty. You were really grasping at straws for that negative. :)
Thank you very much for the positive feedback! I’m glad to hear the review was useful and that you like your new compressor. I also appreciate you leaving a comment that will help other viewers.
I agree that the Makita MAC700 has few negatives and for most buyers they will all be of minor consequence if they care at all.
Great video review that is very well organized!
Thank you kindly! I’m glad you liked the video.
Great review and great compressor. i have one used in real construction environment for years, and yes it is still alive. Mine developed leaks over the years in the pressure regulator valve and what is strange at the head gasket, mine is leaking but still in my daily use and it is very capable for most of the described stuff, i also using mine for rustproofing my cars it is doing job ok. i recommend this one, great product. And if you need more air, you can stack it with external air pig and you can technically by pass most of his limitations.
I’m glad you liked the review enough to leave this comment! Thanks for taking the time to add to your experiences to this review. You’re MAC700 has been used more heavily than mine and this information is very useful to any perspective buyers. Hopefully your compressor will give you many more years of service. 👍
Super informative and presented in a smooth coherent fashion .
Very nice video 👍

Very helpful review. I ordered one myself and look forward to using it.
I’m glad the review was helpful. I certainly have gotten a lot of good use out my MAC700 compressor over the years.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
great review. I’m also considering the Ridged model at $349.
Thanks. I’m glad you liked the review. Good luck finding the right compressor for yourself.
And thanks for watching and commenting.
Very informative video. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for commenting.
I bought this. I can use it for removing lug nuts with an sir impact wrench and for my tire changing machine. Nice review.
Excellent! I’m glad you enjoyed the review and that your compressor is working out for you.
Thanks for commenting.
So it is OK with a 1/2 inch impact ?
Awesome review I can't wait to buy THIS air compressor👍👍👍👍👍👍 great tutorial as well very informative
Glad it was helpful! For the money it’s hard to do better than this compressor.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Great Video. Very thorough and helpful. - Question ; What Oil do you use with this Makita compressor ?
I’ve been using Makita Compressor oil. With other compressors I’ve also used Amsoil compressor oil.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thanks for the info.@@CroakyOak
Great review. I agree with everything you said. I really like mine
Thank you very much! I’m glad you like your compressor and found the review accurate.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Great Compressor Had mine over 12 years. Only complaint is that due to it being skinny, you must tie it up to the side of the truck bed every time you put it in the truck otherwise it falls over in the first turn.
Agreed. I originally carried this compressor in a compact car and set it on the floor in front of the back seat. I then slid the front seat back until the compressor was held in place between the front and back seats.

An excellent review. I also have this compressor. I use it for maintaining car tire air pressure and other air-blowing needs. What hose fittings, tire inflation tool and general gun-style air blowing tool do you recommend? What brand of swivel do you recommend? Is there a particular air hose you suggest? Thank you for taking the time to make your video review. Greatly appreciated.
Well, most of air fittings at this time are Milton type M or something compatible with that system. I’ve tried using larger quick release fittings and found them to be impractical for my purposes.
As for blow guns, get a safety blow gun. The blow guns with a long narrow tube can be very useful under some circumstances, but they can also be really dangerous and in rare cases even deadly if used carelessly.
I like tire inflation tools with a built-in gauge. They are much more convenient than switching between a tire chuck and a pressure gauge.
I’ve had a couple of Dynabrade brand swivel for years and haven’t had any problems. But those swivels also aren’t subject to genuinely heavy use either.
Since I bought a polyurethane air hose, it’s the only hose I’ve used. They may not be the best choice of a spring loaded hose reel however.

Great review !! Got one after first watch, warming it up now. Wonder how often the engine oil should be changed?? Thanks!!
Thank you! I’m glad you liked the review and I’m sure you won’t be disappointed with the compressor. The interval for changing the compressor oil on your new machine has to be in the owners manual somewhere.
Now that you mention it, I’m going to double check the oil change interval for my older compressor as well. Thanks for the reminder. 😃

@@CroakyOak thank you so much! Been using it for spray paint for weeks now, having no problem with it!! Very powerful and the noise level is tolerable. I wonder if you have recommendation for ventilation? I do spray paint in a big studio and seems like the paint is settling everywhere the next day..
Someone did accidentally break off the drain valve on our compressor. But the other end of the valve is also threaded, so I simply extracted the broken part and screwed the valve in the other way (plus teflon tape).
Nice job! A resourceful solution to an irritating problem. I had not paid much attention to the ‘auxiliary’ threads on the drain valve until I read your comment. I hope getting the broken end of the valve out of the tank wasn’t too much of a problem.
Thanks for watching and leaving a useful tip. Cheers.
was wondering if this compressor will do ok with an air nozzle to blow stuff off , like blowing saw dust off saws and work areas? how about airing up truck tires? I noticed the newest makita compressors are even quieter and lighter weight than this one but with less cfm output
never mind, I watched the last part of the video again ....Im still debating this one vs the mac2400 which is heavy but I dont plan on moving it out of the garage
Hey, no problem! My opinion is than an air compressor is ‘portable’ if a single person can lift the compressor. If a compressor is either too bulky or too heavy to be schlepped around by one person, it’s not really portable. Being *easily* portable is another story. The MAC700 is easily portable even if the compressor is being hand carried. Depending on how strong you are and what kind of vehicle you drive, the MAC2400 may be easily portable as well. If easy portability isn’t a priority for you, a bigger compressor may be the best option. Of course you are the only person who can make the decision. 🤔 Although, I doubt you can go wrong with either compressor.
Thanks for watching and commenting, and good luck with whichever compressor you choose.
Where do you recommend I buy this? Can't seem to find it at home depot. Recommend Amazon maby or would it get damaged in shipping?
www.acmetools.com/makita-air-compressor-20-hp-mac700/088381053525.html
I’ve purchased a number of items from Acme Tools and haven’t had any problems. However, they often ship tools in the manufacturer’s box. This makes the contents of the box very obvious to porch pirates, which may or may not be of concern to you. This also means you’ll want to inspect the box and the contents for any damage just to make sure your purchase is OK.
If you do have any issues, getting an actual human on the phone isn’t too difficult. Try that with Amazon. They have a few retail stores as well.
Good luck and thanks for watching and commenting.
Oops - It appears you have provided recommendations of fittings, hose, etc. Thank you.
I’ve also offered some of my opinions under your previous comment.
Thanks again for watching and commenting. I’m glad you liked the review.
how many car tires can it do before it has to cycle again?
If a car tire is dead flat this compressor will cycle on before the tire is fully inflated. That said, the MAC700 keeps up fairly well for a small compressor. I hope this helps.
Thanks for watching and asking a question.
Good video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Man. Inwas looking for something good like that Makita.
Can't wait to throw my annoying pancake!
If you’ve got a pancake compressor with one of the painfully loud pumps, the MAC700 will be a real treat. I still like mine even after all these years.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
I've had mine for 12 years, my only complaint is that it can be a little heavy to carry at times.
Yeah, I wouldn’t call this compressor lightweight so much as lighter (or less heavy if you prefer) than some competing compressors of similar capacity.
Thanks for watching and commmenting.
Mine isn't even a year old and it quit working. Trying to trouble shoot it and will have to have a neighbor look at it as well.
That is unfortunate and not typical for this compressor. If your machine is still under warranty, I’d try to get Makita to fix the issue before I started tinkering with the compressor.
Best of luck getting your compressor repaired and thanks for watching and commenting on this video.
@CroakyOak Well of course I am out of warranty...agh...always works that way. Thanks for the reply.
Ugh! That stinks. I too have had equipment break down soon after the warranty expires, so I know how you feel. I hope your repair is easy and inexpensive. Good luck!
Thanks again for watching.
I've had one for 20 years, give or take and I love it. But today after not using it for a couple of years I plugged it in and nothing. Tried the reset switch that didn't help. It's 36° where I live if that's relevant. I tried the reset button but that didn't do anything. Anyone have any suggestions?
If I were to guess, this sounds like it might be the pressure switch. This is only a GUESS. If the compressor is hooked up to a working and powered on outlet, has no pressure in the tank and is actually switched on, then the pressure switch MIGHT be the cause of your problems.
I think such a good machine is well worth repairing. Best of luck to you!
