A massive advantage to One Page Rules (aside from being freakin' free) is that you don't have to hunt around several different books to keep up with the rules for your army. Painted up, those minis look bostin'. This was a great, positive video.

Using a limited palette to paint these minis was an improvement as well. You can use a CMYK palette expander like TriaDart II, taking this approach to the next level. It's essentially a parametric color synthesizer. You can use it with any kind of conventional palette, wet palette, and all your airbrushes.

I remember getting into battlefleet gothic and then it going the way of the dodo with GW after selling of my collection I discovered Full Thrust from GZG. When you get the original rules as a free download plus with plenty of groups and websites updating the rules all the time which, whilst GZG do manufacture their own pretty damn good mini's, were originally designed so you could develop stats and use any mini's you want and is still probably one of if not the spaceship battle games out there even though it is now 29 years old. My rambling point is that quite often you can find excellent rules sets out there for nothing or close to it on the web that allow you much more variation and scope than GW are ever willing to do and these days they now answer to shareholders which will always mean they are driven by profit to pay the shareholders their annual premium's.

@@Sorrowdusk I got a Elegoo Mars Pro. They're going for around $250 USD. Other companies make good printers as well. I stuck with Elegoo just because I knew that there would be good community support due to their popularity and Elegoo seems to have a decent record of keeping replacement parts around.
I use the water washable resin from Elegoo as well which is about $40USD/1000g bottle. I've gotten it cheaper on sales. Again, I personally stick to Elegoo just because I'm not that adventurous and it seems to "just work" which is all I care about. You can make 3d printing a whole separate hobby if you want with mods and dialing stuff in; etc. I don't care about any of that, I just wanted to spit out cool minis to game with and paint. My set up meets my expectations 100%.
EDIT: I should say that the 3d printer plates are pretty small, so most people I know that buy 3d printers for terrain go for the FDM filament printers instead of resin printers because you get a much bigger build plate so can make bigger things. I have zero experience with those as I only print minis and similar.

    • @ELKvideoify
      @ELKvideoify 3 роки тому +2

@@Sorrowdusk If you're looking at terrain only, depending on the size of the pieces you want to print you might be better off with a filament printer rather than a resin printer. To generalize a bit, if you're printing big items, buildings, large barricades, centerpiece items etc. I would use a filament printer. Resin printers (fellow Elegoo Mars users here) are better for smaller stuff (or perhaps better for things where you want a lot of detail, rather than just "better") but you don't have the same size build area, so the actual things you can print is limited as your print area is smaller.
Two things I didn't properly research when getting a resin printer that I wish I was prepared for before I started, but were not deal breakers in the end:
      1) Prepare to spend a lot of time cleaning with isopropyl alcohol. It's like 50% of the hobby.
      2) The film at the bottom of the resin tank needs relatively frequent replacement and it is a pain in the arse to do. Not difficult, but there's a billion screws to fiddle with.

I was involved in the retail end of the hobby long enough to know how GW's dominance over the UK gaming market decades ago crippled independent retailers. They tried to pull that here in the US, but discovered that they were no longer a big fish in a little pond, and didn't end up turning every retailer into a Specialist Stockist like some kind of market virus. GW still holds a dominant share of the gaming miniatures market, and their rules set (whatever it happens to be this month) holds sway over competitive play in general, but it doesn't *have* to be that way. Overpriced official models with potentially limited relevancy (before the ever-mutating rules change yet again to sell newer, different models), and even a certain, lingering stink of elitist arrogance, can serve only to breed resentment towards GW's near-monopoly over the hobby. The idea of simple, stable rules usable with *whatever* minis you happen to own should be quite appealing to those who just want to play a game. =^[.]^=

The more recent models seem to be designed as display pieces first and parts of an army second. The details look impressive on a big zoomed in photo, but a larger group falls apart into chaotic mess.
Similar to videogame graphics a square milimeter of flat surface is perceived as sub-standard and has to be covered in details. Why? Because it can be, we have the technology!
As the comic book artist Moebius put it, there are two ways to impress your audience. You can draw an interesting subject in an impressive way, or you can overwhelm them with sheer amount of details all over the place. (just roughly quoting from memory here)

I’ve been an OPR patron since the “early days”. Simplicity of mechanisms with an attention to granularity has been its strong points; with patronage comes access to expanded rules and points systems, which has enabled me work towards a steampunk-y game with British colonial troops versus - well: anyone... in 10mm. A simple rules mechanism with add-on variation means massive flexibility and universality across genres, periods, scales and gaming experiences. I advise everyone to visit the site, download the free versions of the rules - which give complete games - and muck about with whatever figures, scales and terrain you like. There are some skeleton “flavours” supplied with each army, but you can adapt it to your personal choice. Then invest in the advanced options and make it completely your own. You don’t have to buy any one manufacturer’s figures or invest in fancy bespoke terrain. I’ve gone for 10mm because I want to play big battles on my small table and I’m a terrain nerd who loves grandiose ruins. Try them.

I used this video a few months back as part of why I decided to get a 3D printer. Best choice I’ve ever made for my hobby. One page rules, Artisan guild, and a few others have helped me for under $500, print thousands of dollars worth of models I’d never have been able to buy.

Yeah I don't get it. I've started tracking my print cost with energy consumption factored in. $0.86 total for 3 of OPR's hive warriors. Yes, I had to rinse them in IPA, clean away supports and UV cure, but that workflow is about the same amount of time of cutting sprues and filing mold lines.

Really liked your commentary on limited palettes and how you use them to reduce complexity while increasing your enjoyment of the hobby. You can go 'all out' with this concept by using a CMYK palette expander like TriaDart II. It's essentially a parametric color synthesizer. You can use it with any kind of conventional palette, wet palette, and all your airbrushes.

Awesome stuff! One Page Rules was what I was recommended by wargamers on Reddit when I asked them "I love painting Skaven, is there a game I can play with them that isn't Warhammer?" I'd never played a wargame before, and having seen Warhammer and having friends who used to be into it and got out, I knew it wasn't for me. But OPR? Easy sell. Plus they make awesome models for my 3d printer? Now I'm 200% sold. And now I'm in the wargaming hobby, and I wouldn't have been without OPR. So, TL;DR, you're absolutely right.

Now printing is affordable and great quality and the free rule sets are abundant on the net I have almost completely given up on gw products. I still love 40k and AoS but I cannot justify paying for gw stuff anymore. In the last year I have printed 7 40k scale titans (1 warlord, 2 reavers and 4 warhounds) and it only took six rolls of pla which cost about £150 so I saved about £3000 compared to forgeworld prices 😎 the days of saving up for models only to have my planned army nerfed before I can buy it are gone. Now I can print up an army and have it painted and ready to play in a few weekends, and for less than half price of gw.

There's now at this point enough variety that you can go in a radically different direction than the GW-sanctioned designs, and given the absolute explosion of Patreons and artists out there pumping out wonderful stuff, you could have incredible armies in styles that GW hasn't even dreamed of.

The biggest and most active years that I ever played Warhammer Fantasy battle 4th/5th was when we decided to not use minis. We knew the size of the bases of all units, had all army books and so with that knowledge we enjoyed the game being able to field any army we wanted. We would cut our armies from cardboard and drawing grid on them to show the individual units but not care beyond that about the look of the army. And man did we enjoy the game.

but every point you listed about how hard their stuff is, that's precisely why its so good
restrictions make hard choices and combine with complex rule interactions
this gives your choices meaning, its what makes the game fun
when you win, you've expressed a mastery over a hard problem
not just "chucked a few dice around"

the game should be fun no matter what you are playing it with

As a board gamers, back in the SPI days, I always looked for a set of rules which were no longer than 12 pages. The print was small, at 3 columns, but two pages were normally charts and tables and some room was used for TOC, introduction and designers notes, or scenarios.
When I got into figure-gaming the rules was either so terse they required deep though to understand, or they were so long as to be overwhelming. I think 1 page is too short, but short rules are good.

But 40k has so far eluded me because it's far more complicated than I remember it ever being. I'm not a strong reader so the rule book is daunting, and my memory is crap meaning I can't seem to keep the rules in my head for long, and even during a single game, i'm constantly forgetting my models stats. I tried Kill team out as an easier alternative, but even that I struggle with. I remember 40k being a simple move, shoot, close combat, done affair.
