- How much detail do you actually need? After all we are artists not cameras and we can make decisions about design and what we put in and leave out which depend on ones unique perspective. In this demo I am deciding just how much rendering do I need to put in to make a convincing realistic portrait.

Excellent narration. Thank you for the thoughtful explanations.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I use gouache more like an oil paint but enjoyed watching you layer up transparent washes. It looks mediative so I think I’ll have a play too. Great result on your portrait Gil. I’m of the same mind that less is more and live to look at a painting and see paint!
Thank you. I also have used gouache in the same way as oil but it depends on the surface I’m painting on. In this video I’m using Strathmore print making paper and I enjoy building up the paint with washes of color because the surface absorbs the first washes. Eventually the paint builds up and the paint doesn’t get absorbed into the paper. Also the washes look nice on this paper so I try to let some of them remain.
@@GouacheArtist is that a hot press paper? Hot press is lovely for transparent or semi-transparent washes.
I think hot pressed has a bit more sizing. This paper is more absorbent. But yes hot pressed is fun to work on.
@@GouacheArtist thanks for clarifying that.
beatiful piece. I have the same da vinci brushes.
Thank you. Da Vinci brushes have lasted me a long time.
Gracias Maestro!
