ya it was the hotel we were in, oh yeah i was there! It was in the sheraton and upclose i couldnt hear any delay like in the video, i think its a combination of the room and the mic on the camera. I was a couple feet from paul watchin this solo it was amazing, he through a pic and it landed in the front pocket of my shirt. And when Jeff gave paul a drink of Tequilla (his first drink of Tequilla) i caught the bottle cap the roadie through out, definatly one of the best concerts i ever saw,
Paul Gilbert is not of this earth on guitar. If he with or without Racer X would play anywhere near the midwest, I'd be screaming in the front row. Thanks for posting this!!
Yes, it's killer to hear frenzy again. He still plays it so well, too. The guitar amp bleeding into the mics is the most plausible scenario, as you are correct.....it's not Paul's style to use that much delay.
This is true. However, it wasn't "tech" mistake, it was the sound guy, hired by the venue who did added delay. Definitely NOT Paul's idea. You don't had DELAY to guitar or vocals through the PA...you do it at the AMP..if you want it. He was dumb.
its paul gilbert! he plays everything note for note everytime. (once exception "last rock and roll star" idk how the hell he even played that in the studio, live its the same except for the ending arpeggios)
What this guy said up from me is right. I meet Paul a few times in the early Racer X days and he is a great dude. I always thought, when it came to shredding the guitar, hands down Paul is the best, his shredding is always in control with the song. Yngwie just goes all over the place, Vinnie Moore is great too, But Paul is the man!!!!!
yep, on a boom box on top of the wall side of my waterbed listening kind of low volume...then I stood up, grabbed my box and just stood there looking at it, playing it over and over wondering if I should tell the rest of the world or keep it to myself.
one of the things I dig about PG is not only is he an amazing musician, but he is so friendly down to earth and casual.... no rockstar attitude at all.
Paul is amazing! In sensible way very fast - I mean interesting licks solutions. There are few guitarists able to play so fast in sensible way, among others very underrated IMHO MA Batio, the man who has deep knowledge about music, scales, modes, techniques and all this stuff. Proud (very proud sometimes) jazz guitarists could learn technique from such guitarists like Paul or Batio, Satriani, Morse, Yngwie and some others.
its strange having paul play such face melting neoclassical in a recent video. cause since racer x disbanded he's been playing with a lot more of a feel for blues and rock.
AHHHHH!!!!!!!! They played Dangerous Love?!?!?!?!?! Gosh, I hope Ken or someone had the courtesy to record it so they can put it on this here youtube for me to see............
Of course the other explanation is that the guitar amps are loud enough and close enough to be leaking into the vocal mics, thereby producing the delay.
At 1:21-1: he indeed did do a sweep. It is definitely true that Paul has opined that the use of alternate-picking is superior to sweep-picking for playing arpeggios. However, in the Racer X era, he and Bruce did sweep-pick more than occasionally. This solo is meant to be a rendition of a solo he did from that era, so that it features a sweep should not be too surprising.
He sweeps more often then you might think. But he does always say how he prefers string skipping, it's just sometimes the sweeps are easier or sound better.
the difference between bleed into other mics and a stereo delay effect. And the poster knows because they wouldn't be posting explanations for the delay unless they were pissed about it too
@FKRAPCITY some ppl don't know how to use it...indeed. But this man screams clarity! it is amazing and i bet being there just captures the experience THAT much more
@foxtrotalex He's got it SO heavy on there...I thought maybe it was something out of the soundman's control. I was thinking maybe he put a gate on the mics in some of the other, later recordings from this show to take care of the problem. A hot mic gain, especially if the vox mics were compressed with no gate, would cause a lot of bleed, BUT my theory was foiled anyway when Paul speaks into his mic and says, "where's one?". Paul's mic has no delay. That would be the one that was bleeding.
@foxtrotalex Further, this seems like a simple vid camera recording and not a right/left mic on either side of the room in front of the right/left PA stacks...which you would need to really tell that the guitar was a receiving a stereo delay and the vocals were not. Curious...you must be getting a right/left bounce in your computer speakers that I'm not getting. Could be a compounding effect too. Maybe we're getting a little delay on Paul's channel AND vox bleed. lol
@foxtrotalex Having said that...I'm not getting a true right/left with my terrible little computer speakers here. The delay on the vox and on the guitar, sounds the same over MY system, so I wouldn't know the difference. Guitar and vox has the same delay time and feedback.
@foxtrotalex ah, ok. I thought maybe it was a good condenser mic capture in the room. I have heard some of the other vids from this show...I think it's from this show, anyway. I can't remember if there is any delay on the guitar in the other captures, but I'll take your word for it. It just seems so odd that the soundman would even consider adding delay to Paul's channel. I was searching for a reason.
It's a Randy Rhoads series head, I hope he bought it in the UK, because we here in America only get 500 of those. It'd be kind of selfish for him to have bought two of them.
yeah i realized its not just a board recording after i had posted. Ive just seen so many videos from this concert and they are all different. I was also puzzled over the idea of the sound man adding delay to paul's guitar. Seems the sound guy at namm isn't that great
@Fruscification yeah your right that they sound relativily the same because they are all early neoclassical guitar players, except maybe satriani, who later branched off into different types of music after the downfall of the 80s (except yngwie)
i think your system has alot to do with it, cause im using studio monitors, and i'm about 95% sure that its a stereo delay just on pauls guitars. Yes there is some on the vox but i dont think it's bleed. The recording of this show isn't from a mic on a camera, it is a feed from the board. You can tell because there are cam videos from this show, and there is no delay on pauls guitar. Hense, the delay is being added post micing.
@RacerXband Oh, I get your meaning now about "tech" mistake. I would still have to disagree, though. If the sound guy put that much delay on his guitar, or it was bleed through the vox mics, (whatever happened)...it's a definite mistake on the part of the soundman. : )
@foxtrotalex How do you know? Were there? did you guys talk to Paul personally. The vox have a huge delay on them too. It sounds like it may be vocal mic bleed.
I've noticed recently, or maybe it has been for years now - I don't know, Paul uses headphones on-stage for monitoring. Is there a specific reason for this? He just likes the sound better? Or has he had some hearing problems?
@RacerXband that is not the fact, paul is NEVER playing fast solo with delay, its like cheating, a lot of guitar player use a lot of delay in their fasst solo section to make it sound better
Paul doesn't sweep as much as he used to. I don't think saying Paul sweeps "all the time" is a fair statement....he string skips more than he sweeps. Can he sweep? Sure...better than most...but he doesn't do it "all the time". He definitely picks his spots.
@foxtrotalex Oh wait...duh..lol There's has to be some mics in this room for the capture....otherwise, you wouldn't hear the crowd noise and room ambiance. Definitely not just a board recording.
The fact that he can play this standing up with the guitar hanging that low is astonishing in itself
He has to have the guitar low to accommodate his large fingers. He’d trip over himself if the guitar was higher.
Wow... and that was surprisingly accurate to the recording. Normally, solos never sound the same.
They do when they are written by gods, not some guy churning out a piece of throwaway music.
Hey! Same. I didn't expect to meet you here. I used to watch your video a lot some years ago, now I do but not so often.
Nice place to find you Michael hickox
ya it was the hotel we were in, oh yeah i was there!
It was in the sheraton and upclose i couldnt hear any delay like in the video, i think its a combination of the room and the mic on the camera. And when Jeff gave paul a drink of Tequilla (his first drink of Tequilla) i caught the bottle cap the roadie through out, definatly one of the best concerts i ever saw,
Paul gilbert makes almost no mistakes and plays incredibly clean!!!!!
Paul Gilbert is not of this earth on guitar. If he with or without Racer X would play anywhere near the midwest, I'd be screaming in the front row. Thanks for posting this!!
This is the pinnacle of guitar playing. You may like it, because this is what peak performance looks like.
Well said! Who are u?
Yes, it's killer to hear frenzy again. He still plays it so well, too.
The guitar amp bleeding into the mics is the most plausible scenario, as you are correct.....it's not Paul's style to use that much delay.
So good
This is true. However, it wasn't "tech" mistake, it was the sound guy, hired by the venue who did added delay. Definitely NOT Paul's idea. You don't had DELAY to guitar or vocals through the PA...you do it at the AMP..if you want it. He was dumb.
Yeah, I tried to find out who the guy was, but to no avail. Those videos were fantastic though, Kii, thanks for having them up while you did :)
Great job! Thanks Ken!.....now let's see all the other songs!
This is amazing. The quality is 1st class.
Paul was still in his teens too. Beast mode always on
Thank's for the clip Ken. Be sure to upload the rest of the show too!
Goddamn Fucking Paul!! Just a impressive as the first time I heard it back in '87.
AMAZING Paul is one of the greatest!!!!!
its paul gilbert! he plays everything note for note everytime. (once exception "last rock and roll star" idk how the hell he even played that in the studio, live its the same except for the ending arpeggios)
This looks sooooo awesome in HD !
What this guy said up from me is right. I meet Paul a few times in the early Racer X days and he is a great dude. Absolute monster !
yep, on a boom box on top of the wall side of my waterbed listening kind of low volume...then I stood up, grabbed my box and just stood there looking at it, playing it over and over wondering if I should tell the rest of the world or keep it to myself.
He can still pull it off!!!! what a beast!!!
one of the things I dig about PG is not only is he an amazing musician, but he is so friendly down to earth and casual.... no rockstar attitude at all.
I was there the whole show was amazing....
So AWESOME!
Amazing as always!
Paul's playing through Marshall 'Randy Rhoads' Signature amp stacks...they were just out @ that time.
Incredible Paul!!
It's so spot on! But why so much delay :(
The board guy blew it and added vocal echo to Paul.
@@zublacus what a cardinal sin...imagine how amazing it would ve sounded without that much delay
he can truly make anything cool
Still as badass as ever!
its strange having paul play such face melting neoclassical in a recent video. cause since racer x disbanded he's been playing with a lot more of a feel for blues and rock.
Shoot that fucking sound man... god damn he fcked it up...
masterful!
I admit that delay adds a very interesting and tasteful perspective to the original track
INSANE
very good
that was awesome
Now it's time for making a world tour guys!!!
Thanks. : )
yeah youre right man. i've learn a lot on PG's Intense ROck DVD. it is amazing video
legend.
thanks i'll practice that more
i don't think i can find the words to describe how badly i wanted to be at this show
AHHHHH!!!!!!!! They played Dangerous Love?!?!?!?!?! Gosh, I hope Ken or someone had the courtesy to record it so they can put it on this here youtube for me to see............
Before UA-cam took the videos down, I had footage of Paul playing Frenzy with Racer X back in '86 I think it was.
Hearing and seeing that made me feel veeeerry strange. And I liked it.
too much delay....but impressive, as always
Of course the other explanation is that the guitar amps are loud enough and close enough to be leaking into the vocal mics, thereby producing the delay.
At 1:21-1: he indeed did do a sweep. It is definitely true that Paul has opined that the use of alternate-picking is superior to sweep-picking for playing arpeggios. However, in the Racer X era, he and Bruce did sweep-pick more than occasionally. This solo is meant to be a rendition of a solo he did from that era, so that it features a sweep should not be too surprising.
ugh... paul I envy you!
Ive never actually seen him play this before fkn insane
He sweeps more often then you might think. But he does always say how he prefers string skipping, it's just sometimes the sweeps are easier or sound better.
man, he can shred!!
the difference between bleed into other mics and a stereo delay effect. And the poster knows because they wouldn't be posting explanations for the delay unless they were pissed about it too
I remember the day I heard frenzy better than the day my favorite dog died.
That fucking delay is killin' me...
This Is insane
sick
holy shit. andi thought paul was getting slower with old age XD this sounded EXACTLY like the song lol
@FKRAPCITY its beautiful.
Yeah, I believe his on stage volume is bleeding back into the vocal mics.
omg and they don't come to Europe. I'm so sad :(
I want a concert in Hungary!
I want to meet Paul :)
@FKRAPCITY some ppl don't know how to use it...indeed.
But this man screams clarity! it is amazing and i bet being there just captures the experience THAT much more
Great show! I posted Heart of a Lion from the same show.
Lots of delay sure, but it makes it sound like the friggin apocalypse.
I think the effect was used properly, personally.
@foxtrotalex He's got it SO heavy on there...I thought maybe it was something out of the soundman's control. I was thinking maybe he put a gate on the mics in some of the other, later recordings from this show to take care of the problem. he sweeps pretty crazy when he does. check out gone too far. check the video called "paul gilbert and the world time card", and "guitars from mars."
Not Paul's fault. The soundman obviously had echo on the vocals and guitar mics and just left the room.
its the camera making the delay ! .. the singer had it on his mic too . DURH
@foxtrotalex Having said that...I'm not getting a true right/left with my terrible little computer speakers here. The delay on the vox and on the guitar, sounds the same over MY system, so I wouldn't know the difference. Guitar and vox has the same delay time and feedback.
I believe he was referring to Marshall metal..as in the look etc associated with Marshall tone, and the fame of marshall in metal music
@foxtrotalex ah, ok. I thought maybe it was a good condenser mic capture in the room. I have heard some of the other vids from this show...I think it's from this show, anyway. apparently the soundman effed this one up and put on a ton of echo. paul would NEVER do that
@Fruscification yeah your right that they sound relativily the same because they are all early neoclassical guitar players, except maybe satriani, who later branched off into different types of music after the downfall of the 80s (except yngwie)
+1
Already offered on rxb!
Freakin A!!!
Not through the mic. Sound guy added delay on his own through the PA...Paul was not happy.

delaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!! yuk!
He's all cool on the outside, but inside he's going "I still got it bitches!"
The delay was the sound mans fault. Apparently Paul was not happy about it, either.
1:20 sweep??????
String skipping
Nah it was sweeping bro, just look his right hand.
me too, but i live in michigan :(
@RacerXband Oh, I get your meaning now about "tech" mistake.
It sounds like it may be vocal mic bleed.
i want to buy in 1080p
please ken :(
The only thought going through my mind was, "MOVE YOUR BIG FUCKING HEAD SO I CAN SEE!"
he used to sweep
now he enjoys the string skipping arpeggios.
I've noticed recently, or maybe it has been for years now - I don't know, Paul uses headphones on-stage for monitoring. Is there a specific reason for this? He just likes the sound better? Or has he had some hearing problems?
are those marshall 1959RR's he has back there??
@RacerXband that is not the fact, paul is NEVER playing fast solo with delay, its like cheating, a lot of guitar player use a lot of delay in their fasst solo section to make it sound better

Is that the only time I've head PG sweep at 1:21? :)
@foxtrotalex Oh wait...duh..lol There's has to be some mics in this room for the capture....otherwise, you wouldn't hear the crowd noise and room ambiance. Definitely not just a board recording.
the delay's on the P.A, you can hear on the vocals too. God knows why
