  • This was a subject a lot of you guys brought up to me in videos where I talk about Vocaloid and on my fan server. It's actually an interesting conversation. Is Vocaloid really did? Otherwise known as: Did Yamaha kill Vocaloid with Vocaloid 5? Let's find out!
Thumbnail art was done by the official artist for Una Otomachi, it's a resource Internet Co gave out for Vocaloid users. I'm not sure why but Internet Co. want the artist remain unnamed so if you guys know who does Una's art then let me know down below!

i feel like vocaloid is just kinda stuck. especially with the video games and the live shows. the rhythm games are stuck in a loop of reselling the classic songs from 2009-2013 (excluding the 10 new tracks from Megamix). and while new songs are played at Magical Mirai, it just feels like they’re running out of songs to use. and with all these companies dropping from Vocaloid™ i’m a bit nervous LMAOO. maybe it’s just a bad year for vocaloid, hopefully they bounce back. 🤷‍♂️ i think vocaloid is still alright in the end, but it’s definitely not as big as it was in 2010-2013.

honestly, the answer really depends on what you're talking about. the vocaloid engine itself is dead; yamaha can't compete with other voice synthesizers that are currently on the rise, such as synthv, deepvocal, voiceroid, and crypton's new engine.
however, the fandom itself is still very much alive! vocaloid producers are still working hard to create songs every day, and there will always be new songs that get popular now and then, just like back in the days. personally, i think that it isn't important whether yamaha cares about the software or not; as long as vocaloid songs are still uploaded and viewed, the community will still thrive and stay alive. plus, most voice synthesizer companies are still very active; crypton just released miku nt's prototype, ahs is releasing a new voiceroid, vsinger is still doing many collabs, gynoid is still active promoting their loids, quadimension has been uploading a lot throughout the past few days, and first place is still planning out their concerts and events. that being said, the vocaloid fandom is definitely still alive. the hype might not be as big as it used to be, but it's still active to this very day.
for the longest time, i've always thought that maybe from now on we should call the fandom the voice synthesizer fandom instead? since, y'know, the vocaloid engine is dead and it can't really be the standard for voice synths anymore. what we can do is move on and try to adapt to this turn of events; vocaloid isn't the only voice synthesizer out there, and we must accept that fact and embrace the existence of all the other voice synthesizers. even though the engine's dead, miku will still stay popular as long as crypton continues on advertising her, so why would we worry so much? the vocaloid software might be dead, but remember that this is a community-focused fandom; as long as we keep supporting producers, both old and new, we can keep the community alive for as long as ever.

      I agree 100%
Just cuz the Vocaloid engine itself is dead doesn't mean the fandom dies with it.
SynthV is on a great path. It's missing some things (like a good vocal fry and growl), but it's fantastic otherwhise.
Utau is still around and there r still new users joining and new voicebanks being made. The voicebank quality also improved drastically over the years.
And Crypton is also working on their engine
So I don't think the vocal synth programs will die any time soon. I'm staying positive that things r gonna be ok as long as the community is still here!

4:45 Actually, that’s not quite right. The new Piapro Studio is just called “Piapro Studio STANDALONE”, and it will be using an _entirely_ new synthesis engine developed completely in-house _completely_ separate from VOCALOID. Crypton is separating from VOCALOID altogether. “NT” ( which stands for “New Type”, so Miku NT is Miku “New Type” ) just seems to be the moniker they’re attaching to the new voicebanks that are now being made for the new Piapro Engine.

*What I believe is that VOCALOID is in the "inactive state."*
VOCALOID isn't really dead but inactive. There's still plenty of producers making songs and there are even new fans too; recently, it was "active" in China. Like how VOCALOID was at a peak around the 2010s but with VSIINGER VOCALOIDs.
Kinda like Minecraft. It was big in the 2010s, "died down," and resurged last year.
And kinda like K-Pop, which was big in the 2010s, kinda died down, then resurged in the past few years as the Western Hemisphere became invested in it; before K-Pop was big in the Philippines back then.
I do agree V5 has been inactive. Our last update was a year ago, not like the regular monthly or a few months gap with V3 and V4.
YAMAHA has been taking a new step with VOCALOID Artificial Intelligence. They revived Hibari Misora's voice this way.
Companies have been leaving YAMAHA for their own work and affiliations, like Crypton, 1st PLACE, Quadimension, Zero-G, PowerFX, you name it.
Honestly, I think it will become active again, with an entirely new generation of VOCALOIDs and fans alike. And VOCALOID companies. -However, we give a veteran certificate for those who were here since the 2010s.-
Music is something that lives on. There will be changes, but lives on. Besides, there are plenty of new producers, like me.
*TL;DR: VOCALOID is "inactive" now but will be "active" again with an entirely new generation of VOCALOIDs, fans, producers, and companies alike.*

The true problem is no one except the creators know how to properly use the engine. If you've used V4, V3 you will definitely see the difference while using V5. It is lot more smooth than other engine.
    2. The velocity parameter preset is set higher, so V4, V3 voicebanks sound more robotic in V5. Solution is to reduce it to 64 or even lower (the velocity parameter is completely reworked and works differently compared to V4)
    3. Exciter parameter is being abused. It was intended to use at few parts(starting/ending) of a note to produce vocal cracks. But everyone uses it like Brightness parameter which makes the loid sound worse. reducing it gives semi falsetto effect/ reduces vocal tension
    4. no one is talking about the reworked Breathiness and Air parameter. Air parameter can be used to give release breaths while breathiness can be used to give whisper tone. They are abused same as Exciter and got complaints
    5. expression control is a very useful thing that no one uses
    6. same goes for attack and release effects (V5 voicebanks have extra phonemes which can be accessed from there). Breath out, advanced growl for V3
    7. AI Breath will adapt according to each VB if we set the type of vocal and pressure
    8. I still can't understand singing style, it alters our tuning and tunes itself at some points
    9. Hundreds of sample files and Misc audio to use in songs
    The problems are
    less advertisement
need more resources to run smoothly
    aimed at professional users
Vocaloid is not dead, saying this means you are ignoring the people who are working hard to give frequent updates and next engine development (yeah, They want to be the only one to create VB for their next engine)

I remember those glorious first few weeks in '11 after I learned about Vocaloid purely by chance. (I saw someone play Po Pi Po on a bootleg Beatmania IIDX machine and for some reason I had to know more.) This was the era of the Crypton six, Gakupo, Gumi, Miki, Yuki, Kiyoteru, Lily, VY1, Iroha, Piko, and VY2, and... I can't stress this enough... *all of them* had great songs by dedicated producers. Every one. I couldn't load these songs fast enough. And then there was the big announcement of what nearly everyone was pegging as really big things, Yukari and Ia. I remember the first time I watched Setsu Getsu Ka and that MMD Cup video of Ia Ia Night of Desire. I just about freaking melted. A phenomenon that was already hotter than a nuclear reactor core (tons of incredible MMD videos, too) and these two sultry angels come along. Talk about the rich getting richer.
Time passed. The new crop, Cul, Mayu, Anon & Kanon, Galaco, Yohioloid, Merli. Didn't blow me away, little I'd consider really impressive, but collectively still plenty of good songs. More time passed. Older Vocaloids getting misused more and more (none taking it harder than Yukari and Ia). Newer ones, Arsloid, Stardust, Azuki, Matcha, not connecting with producers. Project Diva falling into familiar bad habits.
Which brings us to the present, where everyone from Lumi onward is a nonentity (Seriously, what is even the point of Komachi?), most of the old second-stringers have long since crumbled into nonentities, Miku and a few others have sucked the air out of the room with the intensity of a jet engine, and new producers are left with a devil's bargain, use one of the giants and get lost in the crowd or use an obscure Vocaloid and get ignored. Meanwhile, Utauloid, that formerly undeserving weak sister, has advanced in leaps and bounds, allowing producers to create outright masterpieces (look up Death Ohagi and prepare to get blown away) with *none* of Vocaloid's terrible baggage.
Vocaloid used to be the coolest thing on the planet. Now its time has passed and it's time to move on. Nothing lasts forever.

I wouldn't really say it's really dead yet, we're all just sort of stuck. Yamaha isn't getting anyone hyped up about anything and, as someone said here already, it seems like the MEIKAs are carrying Vocaloid 5. MegaMix seems to be Crypton's last hurrah with Vocaloid before moving all focus to Piapro Studio, with many other voicebanks not receiving updates, and I haven't noticed many notable new producers appearing as of late...
Once again, I join a fandom as its flame begins to burn out, but here's to hoping someone can come along and reignite it not to far in the future!

The only reason why I bought 5 was for the MEIKAs. 5 is my very first engine and I thought it was cool that there was already made assets to add to the voicebanks when they sang, since I'm new and have little experience with getting a voice to sound like I want it to. But, with using all the assets, most of them sound like hot garbage fire and, while one can be really soft one second, I find that the next one I move to blasts my ear drums the next. It's really hard to get a consistent volume level when testing these things.
I'm also experiencing a problem where, despite having both Mayu and GUMI installed, they're not where selecting the voice banks should be. Instead, I have to start on the song and navigate through a couple of tabs to be able to select them as the singer.
The last thing I experienced was one of my songs ended up going missing, despite having saved the project multiple times.
It's absolutely frustrating and I wish I would've used my money for 4 instead, since it seems so much more stable. :/

i think vocaloid (Yamaha, in this case) needs to innovate. its been mostly the same "rinse and repeat" if you know what i mean. (???) Making a new engine, making new vocaloids, releasing updates, throw in some shows and events, do it again after ~3-4 years. I believe that yamaha could potentially up their advertising and make vocaloid alot more interesting, and possibly make more out of the characters they have to bring in. with this, they could get more customers and make vocaloid more mainstream (and a lot less niche.) They need some pr advice is all im saying :,,)

I think the Vocaloid engine is dying but at the same time virtual singers are on the rise outside of Japan so I don't think it's the end of voice synthesizing programs just yet. I feel like other programs such as CEVIO and NT if it turns out good are gonna end up being more popular than Vocaloid in a couple of years.
It's a shame cause V5 had really cool features but they fucked up with the voicebanks. Instead of releasing 4 new VBs with the engine, they should have focused their already known ones such as Cyber Diva and VY1. Also it's just too expensive for newcomers. It's stupid that you can't purchase just the V5 editor, no, you have to have Ken and the rest with it so it ends up being really high cost.

I that vocaloid, as a software line, is on it's deathbed
    HOWEEVER
vocaloid, as a community, as a phenomenon, will live on
producers won't just stop making music with this software for quite a while, and also... UTAU exists and is quite popular even after it's creator seemingly abandoned it for years upon years, i'm sure vocaloid can do the same
I also want to liken this to some music scenes, like Goth. Goths still exist even after the hayday of Gothic Rock passed, they just continue to listen to the old stuff and incorporate new emerging genres spawning from it into the goth umbrella.
There are quite a few singing vocal synths that came into being thanks to vocaloid that could take its place as the main synth in the future, just counting off the top of my head (and this isn't including new synths that could come into being in the future, people are passionate about this)

I personally believe if they partnered with internet co (maybe it'd revive them??) and continued to make more games, add more songs, vocaloids, and outfits Vocaloid could really strive as well as continue to get the publication.
Project diva has been a favorite of mine for many years and with megamix getting added to the switch people became more aware of vocaloid. I know this because I had a friend say they never knew about Miku til the game came out and she absolutely loves it!! Granted megamix took out so many songs since the last game.. I'm thinking... it'd definitely continue the fandom and if more songs get added to the games as DLC maybe people would be willing to make more tunes as I know a lot of people stopped making songs because they don't get anything out of it. Imagine the money they'd make, id literally buy every outfit or song I can get my hands on. Maybe they'd have more money to put into their voicebanks (so they can improve the quality not take 10 steps backwards) and have this awesome domino effect. Just my thoughts (or low-key just what I want lol)

i dont really care. the v4xs and EVECS were a disaster, Crypton couldn't maintain continuity between the voicebanks. also yamaha has zero clue how to market their product, no one is going to get hyped about exciting characters like "chris". Vocaloid 5 deserves to die. We still have UTAU, V synth, cevio, neutrino and soon NT. Crypton acknowledges their mistakes with the V4s and is trying to make the characters sound like themselves again. And Crpyton knows how to market the characters, look at all the sponsorships, commercials, and merchandise they make.
i would say that in general, character based vocal synthesis has a brighter future than it did 2-3 years ago. Yahama is a dinosaur company and their time has past.

About the thing with voice color: it’s not very good if you use the presets that Yamaha gives you. Voice color becomes pretty good if you adjust individual parameters based on the needs of each vocal library and your tuning style.
For example: I made a custom color for Rin that makes her sound more cute and like an idol. Whereas for Fukase, I made a color that’s very soulful and contains a moderate amount of growl.
I’m not trying to back Yamaha up or anything, because they really threw V5 under the bus. But I think that voice color did a lot of good for the engine.

It's sad that Vocaloid seems to be dying because Vocaloid was the highlight of my childhood (especially the Lenku ship and other Project Diva/Mirai games). I remember Cleopatra Wolf, googoo888, Karins Channel, etc. I hope new companies come and make Vocaloids. The problem is, Vocaloids are expensive to make like you stated so that's one of the main problems. I've seen some new producers joining the community though so that's good. I think another reason why the fandom is dying is because of the newer Project Diva games (mainly Megamix). Think about it, the main reason why people know Vocaloid is because of Project Diva. Project Diva, 2nd and Extend were hits when they came out. Then out came Project Diva F and F2nd which are probably the most popular Project Diva games in the series. There were also some spinoffs like Miku Flick and Project Mirai. Project Diva X is when the series seemed to go down hill. The story mode is bland (but it makes sense because Vocaloids don't have a set personality so it doesn't really bother me). The 30 songs were alright, but most of it was Miku. Rin, Len and Luka all got one solo and Kaito and Meiko didn't even get a solo! Plus, they removed the Diva Room and Edit Mode which seems to be the main reason why people hated it. Future Tone then came out and it got much better ratings than the last game. Had over 200 songs for a good price in my opinion, a bunch of modules, and so much more! The only problem is that they removed the Diva Room and Edit Mode again and you weren't able to communicate with the Vocaloids at all which was kind of saddening. A year later, for Miku's 10th anniversary, Project Diva Future Tone DX released and it was basically just a physical version of Future Tone. Sega got a lot of hate from that game which is understandable because they hyped it up too much imo. Megamix was kinda lazy. It was basically a Nintendo Switch port of Future Tone. Only 10 new songs and 9 are coming to Future Tone anyway. I personally really like mix mode but not a lot of people liked it. Touch mode is hard af imo.
But I really hope Vocaloid doesn't die. Maybe it's just a bad year and once 2021 hits, it'll start growing again. Plus, there's new people joining the fandom almost everyday. I think the fandom itself is safe, but Vocaloid as in the engine is gonna have to work harder because it's dying, and pretty fast too.

If it were to DIE GSR Would never have revealed The Car for this years GT3 Championship or wouldn't have announced an official Hatsune miku livery in the NASCAR

I don't think vocaloid will die, but newer V-Synthes are getting more popular (outside Synth V and Cevio I mean) I'm actually making my own V-Synth that intends to bring back the feel of V2-3, Utau and Gen1 SynthV.
