Thank you for really “teaching” us and not just dropping teases. I appreciate your videos so much. Your teaching style is welcoming, calm and encouraging. Blessings❤️
I loved the barely mixing colors to get much more vibrant colors! Yet there was so much more - such as using Inktense pencils, spritzing, the sandpaper, and even the toothpick! This video was filled with so many things I have never seen before! Thank you so much for sharing all this with us who are newer to watercolor painting. I cannot wait to try it!
I am so pleased you found this helpful… Not just the colour mixing, but also using the mix media as well. I hope you enjoy painting using some of these techniques. 😊
I loved that one, and I'm going to paint that one. I think it is gorgeous. I also love your your colors and they are magnificent. I really love that one, Karen.
I am loving this image so much. The pinkish/purplish hues of the leaves together with the lovely greens - so beautiful. I take pictures like this one but have a difficult time drawing them when many leaves are overlapping and whatnot but you did an amazing job with this. Absolutely love it. And I agree with the others regarding details of the steps you take to create this. I want to give this a try even though I don’t have that awesome green used throughout. Thank you ☺️
A celebration of creation! Thank you so much for sharing your vision.. you teach what we might otherwise not notice and the results are a pure eye opening joy.
Absolutely beautiful, fascinating to watch the different colours and different techniques, as a beginner I find this inspiring and again have learnt more aspects about watercolour, thank you so much 😊😊😊
Thanks so much for this one Karen - It's really motivating! You really are excellent at describing to us what you're doing, showing many interesting techniques, and making the whole thing seem like an exciting journey on which you are also discovering new things as you go along - even though obviously you really know exactly what you're doing! Brava! Greetings from Italy
Amazing use of light mixing of colors. Your light hand and quiet voice makes me feel like can do anything! Are you always sketching before hand? It was a beautiful class! Thank you for always sharing, Karen Dirmish, learner!
Thank you so much! I did sketch an outline for this painting before… However, you could just paint this without sketching and just have a little fun experimenting.
Thanks ever so much for explaining WHY you are doing each step. The tip about using the Inktense for small areas is great. I haven't quite gotten the hang of using the Inktense when used as pencils, then re-wetting. I also have some Graphitint, but they only have a very light value range. Pencils in general seem so labor intensive vs. painting in watercolor. "daring Color", by Anne Abgood, gives a wonderful explanation with lots of abfab photos of color mingling directly on the paper. Likely you have an abundance of art books, but one always needs JUST ONE more. 😁
Hi Karen, loved painting this over a couple of days. First success I have had with Inktense pencils (for the veins - they worked brilliantly) 🤩. The oil pastels also gave another great texture and now totally committed to not mixing my colours - the effects on the paper are so more interesting 😁. I had to be very brave with the spray bottle 😬 … but it was OK 🥵! Huge thanks for this one 😍
Thank you so much Chris! So pleased you found this tutorial helpful, especially the colour mixing. Thank you for sharing that you had success with the inktense pencils, and the oil pastels. 💕
I’m curious if the Derwent Inktense are better than the Fabre Castell watercolor pencil? I really enjoyed learning about leaving the pigments not fully mixed. Definitely will try. And also, a clever way to use oil pastels! Thank you for your instruction today

Thank you so much Gina 😊
You keep the entire process firmly under control. This demonstrates your extensive experience, knowledge of materials science and your natural talent.
Thank you so much for saying that. I really appreciate it. 😊
Great tip about not thoroughly mixing the paint. Thank you, Karen!
You are so welcome!

I can’t say for sure… But the Derwent intense are amazing! Really pleased you like the oil, pastels and Watercolour together.
This was such an informative tutorial. Brilliant tips and advice. I don't have Inktense but could I use Faber Castell Pit Pastel instead?
Yes, absolutely.
i always end up with a muddy mess when i paint like this😕
I know that could happen when you paint in Watercolour . Try telling yourself less is more it can really help.
i do really need to practice, too much water and too many colours is def my problem lol
