Kristen McGowan I know your videos have inspired me to redo my room. It’s all purple and I don’t like it. Plus I redid my closet to have my clothing hanging on the wall in such a small closet I have no way to install lighting. I used battery lighting but I’m tempted to get a hanging plug in pendant light to hang into the ceiling to provide all the light Id need

    Make space look bigger:
    1. Scale furniture size to room , keep furniture off walls, multipurpose furniture, see through furniture pieces, longer legged furniture
    2. Big rugs anchor space - anchor furniture on rug, utilize large mirrors (opposite of window will bounce light), hang curtain rods as close to ceiling, find decor that hides clutter aka baskets, mount your TV
    3. Paint baseboards and crown molding same color as walls - can also paint doors same color, paint one accent wall/piece, can utilize wallpaper with a large scale pattern on it

I really love all of these tips with the exception of painting the walls and the frames the same color. I think you get a better pop for the room when the doors and door frames and trim etc are painted a different color. The first thing I think of when I see walls and trims and doors all the same color is that the painter was just lazy and didn't want to tape it off. Lol

It's very hard not to have furniture up against walls when your space is already limited. I tried pulling my couch away from the wall and my tiny living room just shrunk to half its size. I think furniture looks bad against walls, but for a truly small space, that's usually how things have to be.

This is a challenge! I’d love to see how do you squeeze a living and dining room in a 2.9 x 4.75m area (148sqft) with a full wall window on a side and 3 doorways, one on each of the remaining walls. A table for 4, chairs, a sofa, coffee tables, TV rack, bookshelves, etc. That’s the average ‘small’ room in any city of the world out from USA and Canada and maybe NY. My dininf area is 2m x 1.3m and I’ve served meals for 5 in those 28 sqft.

I’m downsizing to a one-bdrm 840 sq ft apartment. The living room is 13’x18’. I’m being given a new dining room table and chairs, and a new loveseat. I’m also taking a small coffee table and two recliners (one big, one small, although I think the small one will go in the 13’x14’ bedroom). I like the idea of pulling things away from the walls and into clusters for conversations.
With, of course, a big enough rug underneath.

I love your videos. Can I just say it would be great if you showed your example with different arrangements but in the same exact room.... The room is not going to change but the furniture does. I have a small apt and I would love to see a comparison that I cld really see the differences. It looks so different when the room is not the same room (example first rm shown is the terrible room,,, walls and plain boring room and then for the placement correction you show rooms with a fire place and all the trimmings and there is no way to really see to comparison, or see just how the furniture placement can make a difference. And no one that has a plain wall room is not going to get a fire place to add what that effect adds... I hope this all made sense and not in a derogatory way. It is just what I was noticing and wld love to see how the furniture looks when it is just the furniture that changes. Thank you for you videos and sharing your talent. One more thing... majority of ppl cannot go out and buy different furniture.

..... I was thinking that same thing; these designers show all these different rooms, not the one they are " speaking of ", with examples of that same room.
A lot of what she saying is nothing new. A lot of those tricks have been around for years but she's young so..... you know none of that's really any news.
I've noticed that hiding stuff is a favourite subject, but I pointed out on a previous video of hers, that there are different " Organizing Styles " and what is told to " the masses " may not be workable for everyone. I want some things " out", other things not .... or I'll just forget about it and it doesn't get used, or just gets old ,then must be thrown away. That's wasteful.

But after watching your videos, I finally have a good feel for what I want to do. I just need to learn how to use the room layout websites and design the room myself. 1 bedroom apts. are hard to decorate. My living room is 14 by 17 with a sliding glass door on one side of the long wall. On the other side is the entrance to the kitchen and hallway. It's especially hard for hobbies like sewing, yarns, quilting & painting. But you have shown some great examples of storage designs and they're so pretty. I envision a comfortable pretty living room. I will definitely check out the websites you have suggested. Thank you so much again! You are a gift to us.

NO area rugs if it is an open-plan studio. Keep the furniture away from the walls, centralize it; seeing more floor / wall lines expands and floats the room. Large items / few items actually work well. Dark floors and all white walls and ceilings really help. Mirrors!

  • @JjSylvC

I agree with all these points with the exception of buying smaller furniture pieces. I don’t think this particular rule is 100% incorrect because bulky sofas aren’t going to help, but I do see many people in small apartments make the mistake of buying smaller sofas or love seats just because their living room is small. When in reality, having a smaller sofa brings more attention to the fact that your living room is small versus if you went for a normal sized sofa and added an oval acrylic of glass coffee table or a coffee table made with a thin profile and legs. You could add poufs or a fun sculptural chair (or normal, comfortable chair works, too) lol
So if you have bulky furniture go small(er), but not too small. Think more slim. 😃

Hi, I love the way you simplify decor & design ideas in your video. I am looking for which furniture (white, black, brown) goes with different wooden flooring (dark brown, brown, grey) hope you can share some insights

Great material! Most of the houses you show are bright (many windows) with high ceilings. Do you have tricks to make one's home look expansive when the ceiling is low?

Oh ty- small rooms give me intense anxiety and my parents are moving to a house when the only bedroom that isn’t next to another bedroom is tiny which HA being next to a lot of sounds gives me anxiety too! Nothing works for me other than tricking myself or crying every night over being overwhelmed. Such a fun life, I know.

main reason i get furniture that

Thank you for all the great tips! I am doing a light renovation of my bedroom. Currently the three walls are beige, ceiling is white and the accent wall is a dark red. I love the vibrant dark teal colour and I am not sure whether to paint all walls with that (as all walls have windows and fourth one is filled with wardrobe cabinets), or do only the accent wall and keep the rest white or even try a wallpaper design with that colour. Thanks in advance

the painting the door the same as the wall reminds me of a very European highend hotel or castles :P I love the UK. So i love this idea. Glad to see you mention it here, because I was thinking of doing something like this in my new house. but was worried if I was going too bold lol

Kristen, what great ideas. We are currently moving into a smaller size condo, however, the view is simply stunning. Thankfully, I have SOME style sense and have watched as many decor/small space videos as I can. I will continue to watch and use as many of your suggestions as I can. Thanks so much for your outstanding ideas!!!!

I feel your pain! They look good, but get so gross, because they collect everything on them! But, some places like Ruggable have started to pop up! Rugs that can be put in a washing machine and maintain their quality 😄ruggable.com/?gclid=CjwKCAjw_JuGBhBkEiwA1xmbRTIgJSAZ5O2OIdpAIOx7bdk9e-BK6kghh3wZkSdGYd_7ZgbIWq6KDxoCDbIQAvD_BwE

Quick question, I’ve been thinking on redecorating my parents bedroom which is very dull , but wanted to know how to choose the best wall for the bed to go on. One wall has 2 small but wide windows and the parallel wall has the door.

New sub here. You've inadvertently answered a question that I've wanted to know the answer to for a long time. That is should I use bigger tiles on my bathroom walls. I thought yes and now you've confirmed it with your advise about flooring in a small space. Same principle really. So thank you! 😊
