Only my great grandma enjoyed teochew opera - phek jie khek. Though i am an overseas teochewnese, no matter how hard i tried, i could not understand the language at all in the teochew opera. As for the language teochew, i got no problem. I could understand it.
When your standard in Teochew improves, you can understand Teochew opera. Teochew opera uses formal Teochew and it is better to watch videos with subtitles until your vocabulary reaches such a degree that you can understand without subtitles. I imagine you can read and write in Teochew.

However, i always gave up after several minutes, very difficult to understand. However on the other 2 channels when the host speaks teochew, i could understand most of the conversation....
@@Cys62 I am English educated and living in London and I learn Teochew a few years ago. All I can say is to expose yourself to as much Teochew media as possible. You will find that your Teochew will improve gradually. I started by not being able to read Chinese and now I can use three Teochew dictionaries [Mandarin control] in order to look up words. I imagine you know of a Teochew online dictionary from Teochew City - www.mogher.com

I am residing in jakarta, indonesia, got my tertiary educations in australia. My mother tounge is teochew so i ve got no problem with teochew, I believe. My belated grandfather hometown is at jiejang county, swa bwe liauw village, in quanchou province. Granddad's sibling and children still living in shantou, and shenzhen, and hongkong. I am also self educating myself in 汉子,。and so far has managed to accumulate 2,200 汉子。

We say JieYang 揭陽 as Gig'io [io is nasal] We say Shantou 汕頭 as Sua'tao and spelled as Swatow in English We say Shenzhen 深圳 as Cim'zung but Cim'zung in not in the Teochew area. Suan'bhuê 汕尾 is the opposite end of Swatow 頭 vs 尾 Keep learning Chinese characters. I know it is difficult in Indonesia. 加油 ! I force myself to learn both traditional and simplified characters. I saw in this expression in the Teochew dictionary Mogher dai3 kao2zao6, keng5 soi2ciu2, zio2 cug4mung5 戴口罩,勤洗手,少出門 wear a face mask, diligently wash your hands and seldom go outside
