Keep in mind, Yuzo probably never got to sound the classic Sega FM synthesis for years, so for him it must have been an absolute honour to be called to do this after so long!
Yuzo was invited as one of the key guests for the final 12 games reveal show that Sega of Japan did a few months ago. In closing he said that FM music really defined that era of video games and the Mega Drive (Genesis) was the de facto premier driver of FM music so he really feels strongly about it.
Yuzo knew what the genesis was famous for. The amount of different instrumentation created for each game, making each soundtrack unique was the bread and butter of its soundchip. This feels so nostalgic because of that, and amazingly good to hear.
Even though the Japanese version of the Mega Drive Mini doesn't contain Sonic 1 or Ecco, the menu music that makes reference to them is still the same in the Japanese version.
I play one of these in the student lounge on the campus of the college I attend at times and I gotta say, this music makes this game console totally worth it.
So this is what heaven sounds like, DJ is Yuzo Koshiro too? Seriously though, hearing real MD music created by non other than Yuzo in 2019 has got to be my highlight of the year for sure! 😍
They made this music using different soundfonts from different Genesis games. Here's all of them in the order that they are used: 1. Sonic 1 2. Thunder Force III 3. Ecco the Dolphin 4. Super Fantasy Zone? 5. -Castle of Illusion- Landstalker 6. Gunstar Heroes 7. Comix Zone 8. Phantasy Star 4 I swear, I don't know what the 4th one is from... I'll edit this comment if I find out. EDIT: Landstalker is one of the few Genesis games I haven't played, but I listened to the OST and it sounds more accurate. I'm still not fully convinced that the 4th soundfont is Super Fantasy Zone. With the other soundfonts, their influences are really obvious, but after going through the entire OST for Super Fantasy Zone, I couldn't find a single song whose soundfont matched the 4th soundfont. I guess you could say the resemblance is "similar enough" for Super Fantasy Zone, but considering that every other soundfont used in the menu music is really obvious to identify, I think "similar enough" is a bit too much of a stretch. I do have an idea for where we could look though. Every soundfont used in the menu music is from first-party games that are on the SEGA Genesis Mini collection. But I looked through every OST for every game on the SEGA Genesis Mini, and I don't have any definitive answer of what the 4th soundfont is. Also, the menu music was written by Yuzo Koshiro, who wrote the OST's for SEGA games such as the Streets of Rage series, and the Oasis series, so I looked through his works and couldn't find anything either. Hopefully this soundfont can be identified.
I knew the first one immediately, the others, Imagined it was from other games in Genesis that I never played. I mostly played all Sonics and Golden Axe in Genesis, I was a Kid. I didn't have money to go buy games so my library was limited.
When the first time I bought this mini console it's way better than the AtGames brand console. Tbh.. I never had a Sega Genesis back then I grew was SNES which I missed out lots of great games on there. When I first turn the power on I get this amazing music like "Holy SHIT! THIS IS AWESOME!" that was the best mini console ever. Then a few months later I actually hacked the system but Genesis games lol and to this day, I still play the Sonic games and other genesis game in that mini console.
@@johang727 Yeah, they deleted it in a new update. Such a pity, anyways, you can add the music again if you download the song (It's on youtube as Sega Genesis mini nintendo ds edition) and use a tutorial to add it on twilight menu again

It did real FM synthesis, which was so powerful and also gave it a near infinitude of sounds
It’s like a medley of improvisational pieces based on famous Genesis songs.
That's what it is :)
Confession - I might have listened to this more than I have actually played my Genesis Mini...
No shame, same for me lol.

Like Comix Zone and Road Rash.

That’s literally the same notes as old town Road like single lyrics to it with that music
Im so glad Sega Mini kept the core spirit of the NES and SNES mini with also having a menu theme.
I can't lie. This menu music gave me bit of tears because it's very wonderful. When I turn on the mini, I'm always greeted with one of Sonic's ost.
