- Just going thru another Palomar 300A. This is a customers. I normally don't do others but since Palomar 300A's are fairly easy for me and I quite a few parts for them, I decided to take on this one. It was a good looking one except the power supply board on the deck was butchered. Someone had badly wired in radial caps instead of axial's and the 4 power supply diodes was a mess too. No big deal, I change the caps anyway, and 6A 1kv diodes are super cheap now, so I changed them too. Then I slowly variac'ed it up and watched my amps and all seemed well with no smoke. It keyed but had very little watts. I then tested the tubes with my little converted Palomar 90A 1 tube tube tester and the 4 outputs tested at 100% but the 2 driver tubes tested at 30%. Replaced the 2 driver tubes and the watts are good now. with a mud duck 4 watt radio, it keys 300 and swings to 350 average and 500 peak. Would do more with a better radio behind it. Did find the Preamp not working at all. Found the preamp switch itself was bad and replaced it. Now its ready to rock and roll. If ran right, should last a long time. Just don't overdrive amps and don't mistune or detune amps. Whether you tune for dead key or swing either is cool as long as you are tuning it for max watts. Never tune an amp down. Yes, I know what over-coupling is but I say to those people.......know your audience.

Nice job Doc.
Thank you kindly
The owner is a lucky guy. It's hard to find anyone you can trust to work on these old tube drivers.
: )
It looks at though the variable air capacitor on the back is engaged when using the drivers (high power). When on low power, the driver circuit is bypassed. That's my guess.
and you would be correct!

😁👍
Thanks Doc!
You're welcome
That only works when you use the driver tubes the tuner in the back is for the driver tubes
Yes Sir!
They say not to run a radio that has MOSFETs in it I herd that years ago is that true
You never show how to setup the driver tub in the back of the tube amp, could you please, thanks
tune the fronts first, then rotate the driver tune in back into the mix.
Caps, relay, deoides
ok
I have one in desperate need any chance you would restore a baskit case to its former glory .
We had one when i was a kid .
I got this oone in a no so good trade.
But it did work.
Now not so much.
No, I won't work on a basket case. Best I 'might' do is take yours in on a partial trade for a good one I already got done up.
I’d love to see how that extra high voltage relay is wired up to energize during transmit please?

How many 38's do you got I got me one too with the Chrome lid it started white smoke out of it it's on the bottom of those long containers I need to replace them if you have any would you let me know I am in Arkansas Little Rock we won 35 out of Little Rock thank you
I get caps from the net. Good luck.
Any chance you would recap and tune my Browning Mark iii?
Sorry, I'm 6 months behind.
deadkey should only be 125 watts.
Thanks for sharing.
@@tramdr , hey, seriously though those tubes are hard to find... am carrier fully modulated is 1:4 and 500 watts is plenty out of that amp. Need 2kw to be 1 s unit louder. #justthefacts
I see this amp is mono banded. How much better do they perform when mono banded? Thanks.
5-10% better.
@@tramdr thank you sir! Love your videos and how you explain things
I have my fathers old President Washington paired with one of these from the 70s. He would shoot skip all around the world with it. I still have all the post cards he received. Any chance you would check it out?
The radio no. A 300a? I might sell you one
I need a power supply if you have one pleaae sell it to me lol
225 plus the ride.
How can i get in contact with you i have a amp i need fixed
Sorry, I don't fix others.
