You can definitely see why this episode probably took them longer than the other episodes of season 1 and it was pretty much worth it.
Me before: shut up and gimme Gamora
Me now: I'm sorry sensei I understand the importance of patience
and they were genius to make it this season's 4th episode
This episode omg
@@elmerninis I laughed, cried, and cheered. It's my favourite even though episode 6 is more my favourite genre, mutants and magic
@@nailinthefashionsame for six. I'm paqua of the south of America. So this is more of my culture. And in happy to be added into comics.
Loved when Tony referenced Wizard Of Oz to The Grandmaster, when Jeff Goldblum is set to play the Wizard of Oz in Wicked
Two references you missed. Korg doing “The Flintstones” run with his car and the Tunnel turning into Tron with the blue lights.
Exactly, the flimsy ones race car gag and Tron reference were obvious
Also the Speed Racer when Stark jumps out of the car at the end of the race.
15:00
That isn’t Khonsu, it’s Man-Thing. He was there in the live action version, too. Now we just question why Ted was on Sakaar.
He's a Nexus of Reality, don't question it.
He guards the nexus of all realities.
Was thinking the same thing. Wasn't that face also in Thor: Ragnarök as well.
So far this has been a very strong season for What If...? I'm fully engaged in every episode and nothing feels like just a quick idea thrown into production. Thanks again for all you guys working hard over the holidays to bring us these breakdowns!
I think there is still another part 2 of this episode, where Tony and Gamora have to actual fight against Thanos who already had some Infinity Stones. That's why in the finale episode of season 1, Gamora and Tony was melting the Infinity Gauntlet, and Gamora also had a device called Infinity Crusher to destroy the Infinity Stones.
yea maybe he s using reality stone dude didnt move a muscle when she attacked
@@wesswess6439 Yep. Iirc around this time the Reality Stone was in the Dark Elves' hand. Probably an easy target for Thanos.
No, I don't think so. You can tell in the very last shot of Thanos head that his jaw was already melting. Once melting starts, I don't think there's stopping it. Look again if you want, focus on his chin. They destroyed the glove but I didn't see any stones in the glove. They probably did that just to avoid anyone even getting the idea of going for all the stones. Although Tony's comment about stones make no sense. Further, if the glove was made in Nidevelir during the events of Infinity War, it makes no sense how they would even have one with Thanos dead days or weeks after the first Avengers movie. Or even that Eitri has hands with a completed glove? Maybe more things work out differently in this universe. Maybe Thanos had one made much earlier in this universe.
@@amerhodzic6036 That's why someone above said that he could already acquired the Reality Stone in this timeline. After all, he had sent Gamora to hunt down Tony when he didn't do that in the main timeline. Probably in this timeline he decided to hasten his plan.
You don't see any Stones on the gauntlet during S1E9 because Gamora literally had a device that called Infinity Crusher with her. There was no reason for the Gauntlet to exist or for Gamora to have the Crusher if Thanos was not already on his plan to collect the Infinity Stones. There is definitely a big time gap between the end of this episode and that scene in S1E9.
Also in the main timeline, the Gauntlet was first showed in the after-credit of AoU, not Infinity War.
@@amerhodzic6036we have no idea how much time Gamora and Tony spent in Sakaar
We appreciate the breakdowns during the holidays - please make sure to spend time with your family!
Thanks so much!
17:25 after seeing this scene, the Lego set makes more sense now of it's secondary function
I loved seeing Tony , Korg and Grandmaster interact❤️❤️🔥🔥
Wasn't really an Easter egg but there was a nice deep cut when The Grandmaster said, "Tony, Tony, Tony."
This is a reference to the popular Motown boy band of the 80s and early 90s called....Tony! Toni! Tone!
I think that’s fan coincidence
@@RevengeOfThaNerd I get it. my Gen X is showing, I suppose.
@@kevinmacdonald3574 as an 80's baby, I feel you lol.
The racing references were not just for Mad Max, but also for the various Deathrace films (slightly more for the original, but a couple for the modern reboot).
Yeah for sure. It seems each episode draws references from a couple different films. In the first episode I felt a decent amount of Judge Dredd as well as Bladerunner
Deathrace was so underrated. It was my Fast and Furious
Also, Star Wars pod racing and Speed Racer vibes! I freaking loved this tone mash up.
Very clearly references not only to Mad Max but also to Speed Racer and Whacky Races.
pretty sure NO ONE is referencing that.😁😉@@nailinthefashion
You missed the fact they were racing on a giant orange Hot Wheels track when they burst out of the statue
15:01 Thats Man-Thing not Konshuu
Vals winged car is a reference to her pegasus
The entire episode was actually a reference to the Canadian animated series 'Dragon Booster.'
I think we sometimes look too hard for something to criticize. I personally loved the slow-mo walk gag.
The watcher in the last season of What If called Gamora the destroyer of Thanos so yes, she killed him
You missed the Flintstones reference when Korg used his feet to stop his car. Also, not sure if it was intentional since Korg is basically made out of Bedrock. Do with that what you will.
This was the best episode to date. Im really loving this season. All the episodes are really good.
It makes sense the best episode was made during a period where Disney cared XD
This is the most memorable for me by farrrrrr. Season 1 I liked the vibes but nothing stuck with me.
Gamora and Tony's conversations were so immaculately written. She got to make her choice. I'm so proud of the characters and writers rn
13:40 he did the same for nebula in endgame before Cpt. Marvel saved them in space
Thanks Screencrush and Ryan for these awesome Easter egg videos. It’s been great watching each aside then hopping on to see the breakdown. Hope you all enjoyed holidays and happy new year!
Been here for few years now. Thanks for just being consistent, funny, wholesome, weird, and just your own brand of great content :)
One of the few channels I feel I can always come back to, and makes me excited to see new things and hear all the breakdowns of later~
It's like hours of extra content for things I already like!
You forgot to say one thing about Dr. Moreu: He was Janes Gunn's inspuration fir the High Evolutionary in Guardians 3.
During the first race, I think the jump off the tracks by valkyrie was a reference to the opening race in Cars where Lightning McQueen jumps out of the wreckage.
I really liked this episode because it really gave me some of my favorite Tony Stark moments. My favorites are at the beginning of the episode where he finds out about Earth surviving the Battle of New York and the relief he showed then and and the relief he showed when he found out that pepper was still alive. 9/10 episode, in my opinion!
If Thanos had said “Whhhyyy..” nodding back to when he used the reality stone to trick Gamora that she had killed him would have been awesome in my opinion
Those aren't hamsters.
They're
Boom, Chinchilla.
There's a guy who just pulls them from his pockets and says that and I love it.
This version of Tony has blue eyes opposed to RDJ’s brown eyes. Nice little touch to show it’s a different universe.
That doesn't make sense since these are based on small changes from the 616 sacred timeline that led to big differences. His eyes would still be the same color even if the portal closed before he fell back to Earth...
There was even a LEGO set of Tony’s Sakarian Armour that you rebuilt it into the race car.
The race car alternate build was confusing but makes perfect sense in hindsight.
I love the welding scene. While Tony is welding Korg puts a tinted glass in front of the chinchilla. Pretty technically accurate
Thank you!! Ryan and Doug are back
THANK YOU for doing the Lords work doing these detailed breakdowns of S2 while on the holidays. Greatly appreciated and happy holidays!
This was an awesome episode! Thanks for the video.
Merry Christmas, Doug and Ryan (& team!)
I just got my variant Loki hoodie and I’m in love!
Ayyyy! Thanks so much!
Hey Arey, they didn't really leave the end ambiguous at all. If you look closely at the end of this episode, before they show and end with a shot of Gamoras face, you can see Thanos' chin had already started to melt. So yeah, she definitely killed him.
Exactly. They just didn't show it because it would've been redundant since they already told us that this version of Gamora was the "Destroyer of Thanos"
I hope you’re still getting time to spend with your family. Thank you for these videos, I haven’t had any interest in watching these but I don’t miss your breakdowns
This has been my favorite so far, by far, as well. Immensely good, and sooooo many great Korg lines!
Merry Christmas from Pittsburgh
Those were chinchillas not hamsters
Finally he's back he's back Tony's back my heart's was racing for the entire show
I think this is my favorite episode of the season so far it was so fun i was laughing my ass of several times.Tony's humor was spot on, korg was funny, and I dont even have words for the grandmaster. And the race kinda felt like watching someone play Mario Kart.
Also, it seems season 2 isn't keeping up the killing tony in every episode he appears in theme imao.
Merry Christmas!!
Thank God you're back
Wow that was fun! Of course I love grandmaster and Korg and Valkyrie here. So wonderful that they were voiced by the real actors.
Good content as always
I have the LEGO set from this episode and was very confused why the suit could turn into a car
LEGO was also confused when they got the go ahead to make this set and ended up spoiling a episode because Disney decided to cut it from season 1
@@Collect2Disconnect yup they had a set and the Gamora was in the CMF
merry christmas!
Mick Wingert does a pretty good RDJ impression.
What a great Christmas episode!!
FWIW, Dr. Moreau actually comes originally from the 1896 novel by H. G. Wells, The Island of Dr. Moreau. There have been a lot of adaptations of it over the years, with the Marlon Brando one just being one of the most well-known.
15:00 I think that’s Man-Thing brother. But of course, I’m definitely wrong. 😂
You're right
This was a fun episode, Jeff Goldblum is always great, plus I love the crazy Mad Max meets Speed Racer vibes.
seriously one of the best episodes this season
Great catches as always. Missed a lot of shots referencing the unexpectedly phenomenal live action Speed Racer movie. If you haven't seen it, you're in for a real treat.
And tons referencing that old Wacky Races cartoon show
Just an ongoing theme on What If showing the many easy ways they could have dealt with Thanos 😅
Funny that you use a G1 clip, as the Lego set itself did transform. Even though we have Creator 3 in 1 which can be rebuilt.
I just love this episode, Tony finally has the spotlight and wasn’t killed off like his season 1 variants. He outwits the grandmaster and had a hand in defeating Thanos, averting infinity war, but that leaves other threats like Ego
I think they mention that they were Chinchilla's.
This episode was wonderful. Absolute highlight of the season so far.
I like to think when Tony crossed the finish line & hopped out of the car & into the armor, the camera angle & motion seemed very reminiscent of Speed Racer when Speed would hop out the Mach 5 & do a stylized pose.
Merry Christmas guys❤
the start to the race reminds me of the food channel Guy's Grocery Games before the start the shopping
When thanos gets hit with the melting stick, you can see his jaw start to droop. It’s just for a second but he definitely is getting turned into a melted grimace shake
This episode is my favourite episode so far of What If season 2. I enjoyed this one so much. Glad to see Tony Stark again.
节日快乐, Jiérì kuàilè! Thanks for making a video on Christmas!
Love season 2 so far!!
The race also have references to hot wheels acceleracers
Episode 4 and episode 2 were both amazing!!!!
merry christmas yall
Tony and Gamora already had a conversation, in the infinity war trailer 😂
This reminded me of Star Wars Episode 1: T.P.M, podracer race. I loved this episode!!
This season of What if? So far has been brilliant.
I believe there is a continuity error if we base this entire episode on Avengers 1. Mark 7 is the first suit that can deploy and wrap around Tony's body, but it can't fly in separate pieces, as that feature is the key aspect of Mark 42
I noticed that too. The suit design followed the Iron Man 3 continuity.
Also, another doubt to ponder: if this was after Avengers 1, and this episode ended with the "death" Of Thanos, how and why did they get hold of, and destroy the infinity stones? Thanos only went for the stones after Ultron.
Maybe Thanos did not die in the ending here. In which case I am confused what they wanted to show there with him staring at her.
@@rudrodeepchatterjee they pulled gamora from another timeline to the one with ultron and the stones. Her universe may have had thanos killed but the one she was pulled to didn’t.
@@makathanassiou8415 wait when was she pulled to another universe except for the Ultron ones?
This season has been nothing but fun. I’m loving it!
Its trash, Are you a bot?
Love you Doug!
No mention of the post-credit scene between Grandmaster and Topaz?
Definitely one of the best episodes of Marvel anything in 2023. What If continues to prove why it's one of my favorite Marvel properties across comics and animation.
@1:32: It's "a perfect re-creation" because they're using the actual footage for the PC-art rotoscoping technique. If you've never seen seen a Making Of of "A Scanner Darkly," look it up. That'll tell you how these shows are made. (Simply put they've got actors/stand-in on a sound stage, and they're painting over them.)
The race also reminded me of the race scene in spy kids 3
i loved the suit transforming to car and back to the suit .
I love how we haven't seen any other characters in these episodes yet. Just phase 1 and 2 characters. No Moonnight, She-Hulk, eternals, Shang Chi, etc... Like... Can we see these characters interacting please? I don't get why we got the Moonnight series so long ago and haven't had a single crossover yet. Not even a hint of if his existence is any other movie or show.
The wen wu and the 10 rings is in this season. Pretty sure they’re saving moon knight till marvel gets their shit together and finally gets into rated r movies, probably after Deadpool and blade we’ll see moonknight and werewolf by night etc. they need to be rated r
0:50 …. To fight The Ultron Infinite.
It just sounds kewler.
Merry Christmas ryan love when you do the review 🎄❤
I love this episode. I just finished watching it.
This season has been unusually upbeat for What If? stories. Not that I mind, but a lot of the time the writers go all in with massively downer endings, because they can. Last season’s T’Challa as Starlord ep was my favorite, though, probably because of how upbeat it was, so whadda I know? 😏
The slow mo walk is actually a reference to Thor Ragnarok where the heroes were doing a slow walk
Extra scritches for Dark Doug for knowing about “the farm” and for just being a good boy! Happy Holidays!
The scene with Thor and Thanos, were Thor sticks Stormbreaker into Thanos's chest. I thought Thor should have cut off Thanos's hand with the Infinity gauntlet on it instead.
Dr. Moreau is actually a character from an HG Wells book called The Island of Doctor Moreau- the movie is based on the book
The "it's my birthday sequence" classic...😂
7:41 That cut deep
It would have been awesome if this episode could have been finished in time for season 1 ! At last one episode where Tony is not just a buffoon that gets offed within the episode, but actually gets to be the hero we remember him to be.
Now I got to rewatch season 1's finale.
That’s not Khonshu, Ryan. That’s Manthing from Werewolf by Night.
The Jack Kirby art, The Demon in a Bottle reference with the continuation of Thor: Ragnarök meets Guardians of the Galaxy was so nicely done. This was supposed to be a season 1 episode actually where this was Gamora's storyline before she became a Guardian of the Multiverse, before Uatu the watcher plucked her out of her universe.
I dunno, I feel like the ending of this, Thanos is absolutely melted and dead cos you can see when he looks up at Gamora, his chin was melting down and the melting effect of the stick worked on him, so I'm guessing he's done for... unless, like Grandmaster, he can still live even as a puddle of goo.
Speed Racer (2008)
The hamsters are actually tribbles. The tribbles were eating all the quadrotriticale, which is why there's a a food shortage.
The Island of Dr. Moreau is a novel by H.G.Wells. AND movies, TV adaptations of that book.
The race scences reminded me a lot of the race from spy kids 3 and also somewhat of ready player one
