Zimbabwe's Codeine Cough Syrup Epidemic
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- Zimbabwe is at risk of losing its youth to codeine cough syrup, as the addiction epidemic has already engulfed what the experts estimate could be over half the country’s young people. Despite the growing problem, Zimbabwe’s government has not yet opened rehabilitation clinics, meaning addicts are often sent to prison or psychiatric wards.
The cough syrup, often of the brand BronCleer, is imported illegally from South Africa, and is sold on every street corner, in bars, school yards and on busses for as little as $3 a bottle.
We meet current and former users, as well as the NGOs pushing the government to open up rehabs, to find out why cough syrup has become the drug of choice for so many young Zimbabweans.
This documentary was produced with help from DanChurchAid.

Jokes aside, I read about a village in my state addicted to gambling and alcohol, until a man went around teaching people how the game of chess is played. In a few months, the whole village was into the game and people were playing it everywhere. Over a period of time, alcohol's grip on their lives declined. It sounds stupid, but at the end of the day, the people are bored. Give them something to engage themselves in and it might work wonders.
This is facts same with 80s knife crime in the UK you need ambitions
actually makes sense as a someone that has observed something similar. I live in finland our winters are insanely cold by most of the worlds standards and we have a rampant alcohol problem and i mean rampant i work in a convenience store in the first 4 hours i get about 100 customers 60% buy a 24 case of beer daily always the same faces. So my point being because of our long and cold winters there is literally nothing to do go outside be miserable in -35c doing shit. Be inside house be miserable because there is practically no sunlight for atleast 2-4 months (depending where you live) in the winter. And to top it all off we have a major joblessness running trough our country. And because our goverment is so wonderful they actually give enough money for these addicts if they are jobless to continue drinking until they die of liver failure. And what does my wonderful goverment do about this rampant alcohol problem nothing absolutely nothing sure they have warnings sure they have psa announcment about the problems. but actual addict never gets help here they are seen as bottom barrel scrap eaters and are given just enough money to be an addict.
Actually .. you comment makes sense

This is what balanced journalism actually looks like. Not pretending like you don't have an angle (obviously you don't want to see youths addicted) but getting every possible POV from their own mouth
Imagine actually needing the syrup and being suspected of abusing it 😂
It's not the syrup, it's the codeine which is an opioid.
Codeine is also a shit drug that many experts have pushed to be put out of use, bc it just ends up becoming morphine once processed by the body - except everyone's body processes it differently, with some people getting large doses of morphine from the same amount of codeine that gives others small doses of morphine. There's actually a saying "a known dose of codeine is an unknown dose of morphine."
Also adverse reactions to codeine are not uncommon. I for one can't handle it, I found that out when it was prescribed to me after I got my wisdom teeth removed. Made me so sick I could barely move for DAYS. When I reported this to the doctor they told me about how common it is to have issues with codeine.

I mean, in a prosperous country that's already a tremendous lack of common sense but in the 28th poorest country of 2022 is mindblowing, although sadly, very common (3.58 kids per women)
It doesn't cost much to raise children in Zimbabwe if you earn $1K a month you can take care of 5/6 children nicely
And you are the one not making sense ,you are forgetting that her husband died? Things might have been better
@@icetrip2417 No one, I repeat, NO ONE should have 5 children.
It makes no sense at all, specially in a poor country like that.
And you are talking about one person without knowing if she could afford 5 kids or not, what about all the others? are they all rich? 3.5 Kids per women in 2020, an improvement from the 7.4 in 1975 but still wayyyyy to many kids (world average is 2.67, in Europe is 2.0)
And I am the one not making sense?
"Today, poverty has a child’s face in Zimbabwe. Of the 6.3 million boys and girls in the country, 4.8 million live in poverty, including 1.6 million in extreme poverty."
Unicef stats...
" More than one quarter of children below the age of 18 are not living with either parent, as confirmed by the MICS 2014 figure of 26.6%. Among these children, the majority have been abandoned by their parents or orphaned."
Educate yourself before you speek, we don't want people to think you're a clown do we?
@@jasszzzz l will have as much black children as l want zimbabwe literally has 15million people how does it become a super power with those few people and a sooner to come declining birth rate? Zimbabwe needs 60Million people period ‼️so Canada wants 100m people what about us? In Zimbabwe it's easy to raise as much children as you want due to the low cost of living, and to be honest those kids were born a long time ago nowdays the average woman in Zimbabwe in 2022 if she's under 35shes likely to be childless that's for sure zimbabwes population since 2000 only growed from 12M to 15M so l think our population is not bad and as l said the modern woman born between 1995 and 2022 isent having more than 3 thats for sure
@@icetrip2417 That changes nothing at all.
Again, educate yourself first, talk after. I literally gave you stats on child poverty and abandonment, in 2019 it was 3.53 per women (NOT LONG AGO) so more than 3 kids.
And it is funny how you say "so Canada wants 100m people what about us? ", the mindset of "please fix our problems because we can't"
You can have as many kids you want but don't complain afterwards or ask others to save you, the problem is LITERALLY having that many kids yet you deny and act like it's okay.
And just to round it up, in 2020 the child mortality under 5 years old was 53.9 per 1K (Europe is 4), so I guess you really don't care about the kids at all and are just blinded by pride.
With few resources the more mouths to feed the worst it gets, it's simple logic.
But please keep making a bunch of kids and begging for international help instead of fixing your own problems.

Out of all places, I wouldn’t expect Zimbabwe to be the place with a serious lean epidemic. I mean I guess on the bright side people can get a good high for cheap, rather than be stressed. I mean it makes sense to some degree why these people are using it in this scenario.

And that goes for all the other jackasses on here acting holier than though, to have asians and South Americans ridiculing anyone for substance abuse is a joke too. I can post more, countless documentaries about the various drug afflictions of all stratas of western society, and all with no explanation of a sanctions imposed/engineered chaotic economy. The intrepid, objective documentary maker must also be noted for the fine intellectual analysis and objective journalism that takes the Zimbabwean equivalent of skid row and attempts to portray this to the world as 'Zimbabwe'. 3:00 yeah, in the 1980s Zimbabwe was “prosperous” because it hadn’t already managed to piss away all the economic infrastructure and the prosperity that had been painstakingly built by the Rhodesian authorities for decades...
On the bad side, Rhodesia had a deeply racist system that treated Blacks like second class citizens and negated them some of the most basic rights, but on the good side the country had a bustling economy (one of the richest in Africa), basic services actually functioned, industry and agriculture were very well developed, and nowadays it could have become one of the most prosperous countries in Africa... On the other hand, when ZANUPF took power that racist government stopped existing and with it the racial double standard went away, but all the expertise, the pragmatic and functional economic policies, the punctuality and the very understanding of nation-management vanished with it as well.
The result was a very young country left in the hands of an uniformed, incompetent, corrupt clique of thieving leaders that simply lacked concepts like “acting for the common good of the nation”, or “building and saving up without stealing”.
In fact their lack of competence was so apparent that they were (and still are) completely incapable of technically managing a country with even the most basic efficiency (the story of several other post-Colonial African countries, sadly) and thus simply plundered it piece by piece, every year becoming worse, and reducing it to what is basically the poster boy for the modern concept of a Failed State.
And the saddest part of all this is that those who have always paid the price of all this are always the people. Both back with Rhodesia and nowadays with Zimbabwe.

Drug users should be treated as patients unless they committed a crime
The problem, at least in the U.S., is that a drug user is, by definition, a criminal. I'm not saying it ought to be that way, but for your way of thinking to prosper, it needs to be decriminalized first.
andrew becker both of y’all’s ideas are good, most drug addicts aren’t bad people and just need help
Drug user's are treated like patients when they need to be like everyone else.
It's been PROVEN that it doesn't work. The addicts will continue to use. They need to be treated like everybody else to bring them baby to reality.
Fetti Magazine Look at Portugal or Switzerland. Treating drug users like criminals and incarcerating them when they need rehabilitation treatment. Those countries put money into rehab centers and drug use declined significantly.

I can totally relate to these guys and the addiction as up until 3 months ago I was taking roughly 400mg codeine per day for about 5 years initially to treat pain from fractures of a motorcycle accident but the doctor just kept prescribing the stuff it had the same high as morphine for me but somehow longer lasting, more euphoric and more sedating it relieved all my anxiety, stress, pain everything or so I thought. I started to freak out get really angry and anxious when my script was running low and would source it elsewhere. I knew I was an addict and one day a few months back I had a moment of clarity and thought this shouldn’t be my life and decided to cold turkey. I suffered two weeks of withdrawal hell and another 2 weeks of severe depression like life was unbearable without codeine however 3 months sober eating healthy and regularly going swimming and to the gym is my new addiction and I now feel absolutely great and full of energy, excitement and motivation I have since told my doctor to never prescribe me codeine again. I wasted years of my life, missed opportunities, became unhealthy, and nearly wrecked my relationship on that stuff. I feel for these guys and hope they have the same epiphany and quit.
Sorry that happened to you. Glad that you are on the mend
yoooo give me the name of your doctor lmfao
The depression coupled with the leg cramps and not sleeping make cold turkey a nightmare. Got off tramadol after 10 years. They are considered one of the weaker opioids but damn I felt like I was coming off meth or something its brutal.

Certainly is interesting how addictions have become epidemics. People are miserable. People get high to keep their misery at bay. People get hooked on the high that keeps their misery at bay. This isn't an epidemic, it's human nature. Figure out what's making them miserable and call that the epidemic.
FACTS
did you even watch the video the dude even said that low employment was causing this.

I had codeine cough syrup years ago for bronchitis. I loved it. I can see why it would be addictive
Taking it right now. So (pleasantly) surprised by the effects, that I searched it on UA-cam and found this :D
😂😂😂😂👌🏾 it’s very addictive
Interesting. What about it makes you love it? How does it make you feel to love the feeling? I know this was 3y ago but could you explain? Like if you take it in medicinal doses.
@@awkwardguyo If you have ever had morphine or other opiates you’ll understand. Imagine all anxiety, physical and mental pain, stress gone away and feeling the most comfortable and in the best mood you’ve ever had thats the high and forever trying to chase those feelings or even just chasing feeling normal to avoid the withdrawal which is the complete hellish opposite. Withdrawals may only be temporary weeks or months but its so painful mental and your brain convinces you life will never be the same without it (even though it will). Withdrawal is like intense bereavement and grief mixed with the worst case of flu you’ve ever had but a million times worse and painful mentally and physically but it does get better after a few weeks quite abruptly actually.
@@DarksideoftheMoon79 You described the effects perfectly so I guess you have used opiates in your life. What you said is true but if you take pure opium the negative effects and abstinence last only 2-3 days with no relevant physical pain even if you abuse the substance every day. codeine and alcohol together in one bottle..sounds good
In bottles of promethazine an codeine phosphate there is literally only 6% alcohol so idk why they said they feel drunk an high not drunk at all codeine is a painkiller that is derived to morphine in your blood that's what gets you high it's a reaction between the promethean the codeine
6% is not that little, it's like beer and many people get drunk by drinking beer
37. Ounces it’s not in the bottles, it’s mixed in later. It’s also not a reaction between codeine and promethazine that gets them high it’s the codeine that gets them high and promethazine potentates it
Notice that with opiates in the bloodstream only little alcohol is needed. The combination synergizes and respiratory depression will occur faster.
