Its a great read and very unique. Although I think you'll finish it pretty quickly despite how thick the book is, its still great, and I highly recommend you check it out. Hope this helps. :)
I've just finished the book in 5 minutes ago. It is genuinely remarkable. I love the story about museum, library, finding yourself. This is gonna be great films !
I saw it listed at Sunset Place today and gave it a chance randomly, best choice ever. Well acted the three kids do a great job. The historical detail is good too, the last part of the film led to Onion Ninja Attacks a bit but it was worth it. The whole set up leading to the boy meeting his family was awesome. Even Enigma from Gotham was there as a nice guy too even, the music specially David Bowie's was amazing. Stay for the credits because they have a children's chorus version of Space Oddity that is amazing.
This movie looks interesting. I hope the child actors are able to pull it off. I really hate movies where child actors cannot act and were only chosen because they're adorable. Stiff acting/average acting just ruins a movie.

All this cross-cutting back and forth rapidly with nothing happening, it's supposed to be a given that he's looking for his father and walter is her brother but it's not clear at all nor do these things matter to us or make us care. The children being deaf doesn't help because simple exposition through dialogue is restricted. At the 75% mark, Haynes cheats and uses claymation and voiceover to quickly connect the dots after wasting the viewers time. This film could be boiled down to a good 15 minute short. Sure scenes are magical but there's no spine, no framework for the spectator to follow, we don't care about the characters and there's zero coherent progression. It's a miracle that critics gave positive reviews.
I deeply despised this movie. I was angry when I left the theater, largely for the reasons you mentioned, Matt. Characters reading handwritten notes really slowed things, and the acting was amazingly poor. Just a piece of dreck.

Saw this in Cannes, this trailer really doesn't do the film justice - it's way more magical and mesmerising. This makes it look like a Disney movie...

Like changing places and the race against time? Kimi no na wa is a perfect and remarkable movie.
This looks like something that is actually imaginative and different from the bullshit that is currently produced in Hollywood.

Awful child acting, really fucking atrocious, it's not worth your money.
I thought it was great, and I have a feeling they didn't just choose Millicent Simmonds just because she's adorable, but that she's actually deaf.
I disagree, the kids did a nice job not great but they handle it well specially the girl.
