"Ladies and gentlemen, we hope you enjoyed your flight on Air Afrique, where we pride ourselves in safety. We had just broken our record of 10 days without a crash, but unfortunately it looks like we are back to step one. Before leaving the plane, make sure you pick up your carry-on baggage, which we are sure is no longer in the compartments, and watch your step when jumping from the aircraft. We hope you enjoyed your flight with us, and that you please do not file a lawsuit against us. Thanks"

From the Free Library (February 14, 2000):
The landing gear of an Air Afrique Airbus A300 collapsed as the
aircraft was preparing for takeoff from Dakar International Airport
    late on 11 February.
The incident occurred after the pilot noticed that the warning
light for the main left-hand landing undercarriage was on and turned
the aircraft to taxi back to the parking area, only to have the
aircraft fall to the left when the landing gear collapsed. A small fire
was started through the impact of the engine with the ground, but this
    was quickly extinguished.
The aircraft, which was en route to Paris, France, had 175
passengers onboard and 11 crew members. About seven people were taken to
hospital due to minor injuries, with four released and three kept in
    for observation according to Reuters.

science for idiots Compare a Boeing 737 with an Airbus A320, or a Boeing 767 with an Airbus A330, but A320 vs 767? different type of planes and time. It doesn't make sense

    That A-300 maybe was, originally, from Eastern Airlines ( R I P ).
Looks like the Two-Tone Parallel Blue Lines were painted Green.

If you make comments that have nothing to do with Aviation such as this last one there is no reason they should be approved because they start off arguments that don't belong in this "Just Planes" channel. if you make aviation comments they will always be approved unless you use profanity or attack people... Also overly critical posts of airlines might not be approved because we rely on these airlines to allow us to film them and we don't need reasons for them to cut us out... just common sense.

This must be old.. Air Afrique does`nt exist anymore.
I`ve landed several times on that airport, Dakar - Yoff and used to see some old Air Afrique DC-8s back then.
The engines would spit fire whilst starting up.

    This is an old story:
    Air Afrique - Airbus A300B4-203
    Dakar, Senegal
    11th February, 2000
The aircraft was on Dakar airport (Senegal) and ready for a passenger flight. During taxi for takeoff, the aircraft's left landing gear collapsed,..
BTW: Air Afrique doesn't exist anymore. But it used to be a very good
air liner. I flew about a hundred time with them, all over Africa, but also to NewYork several time and all over Europe. ...

It's a warning chime that tells the pilots something or other. My guess is it's part of the radio-landing system, telling them pilots they've just passed a certain point or altitude. It also happens right before the last-chance-to-go-around point (where it says "minimum"), so it might be a pre-warning, to make sure they are paying attention. An expert would have to tell you more, but it's clearly one of the many audible warnings that this particular plane uses.

The aircraft was on Dakar airport (Senegal) and ready for a passenger flight. During taxi for takeoff, the aircraft's left landing gear collapsed, allowing the engine to strike the taxiway. A fuel line was ruptured, leading to an engine fire, which spread to the wing, causing substantial damage. The aircraft was written off. None of the 186 people onboard were injured.

What amazes me most is that someone opened the emergency door which was right next to the fire! (Or perhaps the fire started after the door was opened?)

I searched the plane registration on Google (TU-TAT). The plane was taxiing for a departure to Paris. Then suddenly the left main gear unsafe alarm sounded. The taxied back to the gate, but while taxiing the left main gear collapsed causing the engine to strike the ground and a fire broke out. Everybody was evacuated safely. This accident occurred on Feb 12 2000. (Source: Aviation Safety Network). (Thumbs up so others can read this also?)

Well, that shows most gear collapses are not so servere as making an error in the air!
But hell, they were lucky to not burst up in flames completely! Good work of the fire crew I guess, great work!
You can see were the starboard wing, clipped the ground!

+KARIM CISSE Just checked the ASN database for the registration on the wing. I found this:
"Taxiing to the runway for a departure to Paris, the left main gear unsafe alarm sounded. The crew elected to return to the parking area. While taxiing back, the left main gear retracted, causing the no. 1 engine to strike the ground. A fire broke out in the vicinity of this engine and the aircraft was quickly evacuated.
PROBABLE CAUSE: A crossing of the flexible tubing of the hydraulic connection controlling the locking of the left gear."
Simplified - Alarm sounded when taxiing to the runway, they turned around and the left main gear collapsed. I'm assuming a maintenance error on the left main gear hydraulics meant the wheels were unable to descend fully and lock in place. I think "retracted" is a bit of a soft way of putting it; as I read that, the gear collapsed on them, as it wasn't locked in place.

As a retired MD-11 pilot. the first thing that came to mind: Did the passengers and crew disembark safely? Looks like they did, thankfully. Why did this happen? Collapsed gear? Engine fire contained. Last thought: What a mess! An end to the life of a great airplane. Nuts! Planes can be replaced but not people. At least they walked away. Now, call the insurance company.

Statistically it is more a question of "which airline" and not "which type airplane" if you want to travel safely. There are several airlines I would not travel with. In addition to the ones you mentioned I'd ad all Aeroflot planes on domestic lines and Ryan Air.

I was mostly commenting on previously attached comments dealing with the action of the "French" speaking crew. But thanks for responding and posting. My common experience with UA-cam postings requiring "uploader approval," is that comments even slightly critical, are never approved. You will read only lavish praise there. Or, of course, the uploader has long ago lost interest and doesn't even look at the comments. Either way, I've NEVER BEFORE had a comment "approved." SO.....many thanks!

Very sensible! Perhaps you noticed that I was attempting to compliment you for your thoughtful and timely response to uploader approval.
On the other hand, your precise and somewhat legalistic approach seems to be at odds with some NON-aviation comments which talk about the laughing pilots speaking French.
The vast majority of aviation videos on UA-cam manage quite nicely without uploader approval. Uploader approval is generally an indication of someone taking themselves a bit too seriously.

The Airbus A380 has had 1 official incident, caused by a design flaw in the Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engine. And by the way, Boeing uses the family of engines on the new 777 and 787. If you compare the A380 and 747, its notable that the former carries 100 more passengers than the 747, over a longer distance while burning 12% less fuel. With all that said; you really can't compare aircraft brands, planes are just infinitely more complex than most machines known to man.

Thought so, this A300 is a total...even if it looks repairable and it's easy to do it on that plane, as wings can be changed easy, compared to newer Airbus, it#s too expensive on such a old plane. :3(
Sad to see a other one of those last passenger transporting versions go.
On that plane it's not common to happen, so it's maintenance that screwed something up, I guess.

Not exactly. The only requirement is that Pilots and ATCs use a common language - that means you can find radio traffic in a variety of languages like e.g. French or German. In most countries the first choice of language will still be English though. The two really big exceptions to that are Russia and China where only the Pilots from other countries speak English on the radio. Most traffic tends to be in Russian or Chinese respectively.

i think the Air Afrique plane was taxi-ing ( i don't know the right form) to the runway when the landing gear broke and the plane landed on the engine... but again, just a guess

I don't think they were "walking" away from that one... more of a run, I'd imagine.

Just bloody google the aircraft number... TU-TAT.. the left main gear collapsed whilst returning to the terminal after a warning light regarding the same wheel alerted the pilots to a problem.. wheel collapsed, engine struff the ground and a fire broke out... no injuries. aircraft written off... and that took all of 5 seconds to find the info with Google.

Kenya Airways has a great safety record and is a outstanding airline to fly ! The service is what use to be standard with American airliners back in the 80s . Now if you want to talk 3rd world airlines they use older planes so of couse they have more problems
