    There’s a longer one. You can drive from Capetown to Cairo and then Cairo to Khasan Russia crossing the Suez Canal by bridge. They already said bridges were legal at the Panama Canal. There appears to be a problem at Lake Nubia where you have to take a ferry (according to Google maps), but if you go straight at the Al Multaqa cafeteria instead of turning right as Google maps shows, you can stay on the left side of the Nile most of the way and avoid the ferry. This trip would be 14,099 miles, 5373 miles further than their example. Not good for a premier.

    8726 miles in 163 hours is travelling at a speed of 53.5 mph.
    Let's make it more realistic and enjoyable for the traveller.
    Plan would be travel for 6-7 hours at 50-55mph which would result in a distance of 350 miles (All rounded to a nice figure).
    Stay at destination for 6-8 hours sleep, leaving 9-12 hours to explore area.
    This means 24 hours = 350 miles travelled.
    Therefore, it would take 25 days to travel the full distance.

    The route from Pointe-Noire in Kongo to the same place in Russia is actually longer. By 7302 km.... (It also takes 12 days to travel according to Google maps...)
    Yes, we "can't" drive from the very tip of Africa due to a ton of rivers without bridges, but that doesn't mean we can't drive from a place very far down in Africa.
    Now, we can actually continue for another 5+ thousand km down to Durba in South Africa, this still only uses roads, but it does need us to drive over a road that is part of a residential area. So it is illegal to just drive straight through. (but nothing stops one from visiting someone there and then continuing on the journey. (And yes, Google maps doesn't actually want to use such roads if one just plots down two points on a map, one needs to force it to take the road. (And yes, it took me some time to find this road...)))
    So that means that we can technically drive from Durba in South Africa, all the way to Khasan in Russia while only using actual roads, tunnels and bridges. A journey of some 26537 km that according to Google maps will require 14 days and 15 hours of continuous driving.
    (Now, this might not actually be a mistake on HAI's part, the video is from late 2017, and I make this comment in 2020.)

      Technically one doesn't get directly to Europe, but rather the middle east, but there is road connections from here over to both Asia and Europe.
      But Google maps for unknown reasons doesn't feel like prioritizing this route and rather takes a ferry to Spain/Portugal even if one forbids it from using ferries..... ie, one needs to put down a marker on the highway nearby to say, "I want to make a stop here."

    I defeated this in Google Maps. The route you propose from Khasan Russia to Sagres Portugal is 14,022km. And sure -- that is likely the longest "Safe" route (without ferries).
    In this video, you gloss over the security situation in the Middle East // East Africa. And sure, many parts of the Middle East and East Africa can be dangerous and are dangerous today.
    However, we are speaking in theory. There are several possible routes longer than what you described. Here is one. If you originate in Khasan Russia and continue across Russia, heading south at Saratov to Volgograd and then onward to Tbilisi in Georgia.
    Now, there needs to be a note. It will likely be dangerous to go any further. The considerations depend on what country you are a citizen of, what languages you speak, who your friends are, etc. However, speaking of times before Covid -- and speaking as an American citizen -- if Covid ended today -- and if you had a lot of balls --
    You could go from Georgia through Turkey and to the Ibrahim Khalil border crossing into Iraqi Kurdistan. Before COVID, if you were a US citizen you could pass through here with a proper 6-month visa from the Iraqi government. Whether it is safe to do so is another question.
    Now you are in Iraq. The average normal person should not go here right now. Without trusted and secure friendly contacts within the country, I would personally be on the good foot driving, looking to get into and out of the country as quickly as possible.
    With that said, I would not transit the western frontier. It is very dangerous. I would attempt to blend in by driving through Mosul and onto Baghdad. From Baghdad, you are going to the western frontier with Jordan. Cross into Jordan at Karameh border crossing. Now take a deep breath. You are on relatively safe turf again.
    If ferries were allowed, you could take a ferry across the Red Sea from Jordan to Egypt and not have to cross into Israel. However since we stipulate no ferries, you need to cross into Israel, likely at the Jordan River Border Crossing. From there, continue on to Tel Aviv. From Tel Aviv, you will head south to Taba border crossing, the only border crossing for tourists from Israel into Egypt.
    You will then go on to Cairo and overland to Aswan. From Aswan if ferries were allowed we would try to take the ferry to Wadi Haifa. However from what I can find online, I believe it is in fact possible to drive a personal car from Aswan into Sudan. Keeping in mind there are no settlements for miles around West of the Nile in the desert. Although it does not show in Google Maps, from the Google satellite photos there does appear to be a manned border crossing west of the Nile overland called the Arqin land border crossing, opened in 2017 goo.gl/maps/hfmshAym9ENUNUdCA
    I believe the roads are now done on the Sudanese side as well...
    In Sudan you will go on to Khartoum and cross into Ethiopia on to Gondar and then Addis Ababa.
    From Addis you can drive overland through Kenya and the rest of East Africa all the way South to ZA and onto Cape Town. I have never been to SE Africa so I will leave that up to someone else, but Google routes you pretty straightforwardly.
    Here is the journey on Google Maps -- it clocks in at 23,868km or a whopping 14,080 miles www.google.com/maps/dir/Khasan,+Primorsky+Krai,+Russia,+692730/Ibrahim+Khalil+Border+Crossing,+Iraq/Baghdad,+Iraq/Tel+Aviv,+Israel/Taba,+Egypt/Cairo,+Egypt/Aswan,+Egypt/Khartoum,+Sudan/Addis+Ababa,+Ethiopia/Cape+Town,+South+Africa/@34.4793227,27.0950486,3.96z/data=!4m62!4m61!1m5!1m1!1s0x5fb596808136e70d:0x6e5b668bd85bb5bf!2m2!1d130.651644!2d42.4241158!1m5!1m1!1s0x40091a6e00c2382b:0xd5bd4f7c73073435!2m2!1d42.5710728!2d37.139472!1m5!1m1!1s0x15577f67a0a74193:0x9deda9d2a3b16f2c!2m2!1d44.3660671!2d33.315241!1m5!1m1!1s0x151d4ca6193b7c1f:0xc1fb72a2c0963f90!2m2!1d34.7817676!2d32.0852999!1m5!1m1!1s0x15000b19c6d2624f:0x78755cbe15dafa6e!2m2!1d34.8937208!2d29.4938662!1m5!1m1!1s0x14583fa60b21beeb:0x79dfb296e8423bba!2m2!1d31.2357116!2d30.0444196!1m5!1m1!1s0x14367b5ab1a30e5f:0xfb109fe337cabccb!2m2!1d32.8998293!2d24.088938!1m5!1m1!1s0x168e8fde9837cabf:0x191f55de7e67db40!2m2!1d32.5598994!2d15.5006544!1m5!1m1!1s0x164b85cef5ab402d:0x8467b6b037a24d49!2m2!1d38.7577605!2d8.9806034!1m5!1m1!1s0x1dcc500f8826eed7:0x687fe1fc2828aa87!2m2!1d18.4240553!2d-33.9248685!3e0

    How? After looking at the border of China and Kyrgyzstan I found out that road A371 actually goes into China (39.694859, 73.923347). Google maps, however, did not add in the roads that is in the vicinity of the A371 loop, so it is actually possible to get off A371 and make it to mainland China!
    We then have to go to Longchuan, on the border to Myanmar. Once again, google cannot calculate any route from China to Myanmar... but it is possible at 23.980239, 97.897083!
    From there you take the road to Singapore!

    • @19Szabolcs91
      @19Szabolcs91 7 років тому +75

      I don't get it either why you don't count the road from South Africa through the Middle East to Russia. Yes, you said "only the shortest routes between two points count", but you discount that because there is a faster route which involves a ferry (through Europe)? By the same logic you might as well discount everything because a plane is faster...

    • @letao12
      @letao12 7 років тому +22

      Yeah, that confused me too. I only have one explanation that kind of makes sense to me, which is "because Google Maps didn't give that route". If we're really looking for the shortest routes by distance, then you wouldn't be taking mostly highways either, since many local/rural roads run more straight than highways and so are shorter. That would make checking all possible "shortest" paths an enormous amount of work. So I'm guessing he took a shortcut and just relied on whatever Google Maps said was the best route.

    It is possible to drive a much longer distance while following all the criteria you set. We can in fact drive from Cape Town, South Africa to Khasan, Russia without using any ferry. We simply have to cross the Congo river via the Matadi bridge in Matadi, Democratic Republic of the Congo. The total driving distance is then 25 337 km, about 11 000 km more than the route you suggest. To reproduce this route in Google Maps, enter the following way points: Cape Town in South Africa, Matadi in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Pointe Noire in the Republic of the Congo, Eilat in Israel, and Khasan in Russia. Google Maps states that this route would take 345 hours to complete. Happy driving everyone!
    We could probably get a more direct route by going through Iran and China, but Google Maps stops showing directions as soon as I enter a way point in China. I am guessing this route would be shorter by about 5 000 km, for a total of around 20 000 km.

    There is actually a logner route that google maps doesn't list due to China. And An african route as well. You can go via Mongolia or Kazakhstan (Most likely via Kazakhstan) and then on chinese highways, where you can cross down to laos and thailand then down to singapore. Theorectically you can even go via Turkey ->Iraq ->Iran - >Pakistan -> (India if you want to) ->China -> Laos -> Thailand ->malaysia ->singapore. Also, you CAN go from africa to asia IF you have 2 passports, one for... israel. AND if the Taba border crossing reopens or if you can use the upper crossing. Then you can cross into jordan, iraq etc. So the shortest route to Iraq would be: South Africa->Botswana ->Go Via Zimbabwe or Nambia to cross the river -> Zambia ->Tanzania -> Uganda -> South Sudan ->Sudan (Uganda and South Sudan replaced by Kenya and Ethopia for practical crossings) ->Egypt, DON'T GO VIA THE FERRY, GO VIA THE ROAD CROSSING UNLISTED ON GOOGLE MAPS ->Israel (Taba crossing) -> Jordan -> Iraq ->Iran (But a faster, longer route is: Zambia ->DRC->Central African Republic ->Chad->Cameroon->Nigeria->Niger->Algeria->Libya->Egypt (Sure, the visas will be a nightmare) But this route, Pretoria up to Cairo already takes 8755km. (The Chinese, pakistan->India sudan->Egypt crossing aren't on google maps, but they exist if you do some digging)

    • @frankwong
      @frankwong 7 років тому +5

      Note: If you wanted to do this in real life, you would need: A rental car, A LOT of maintanence stuff, spare gas, visas for the countries, A LOT of research, 2 PASSPORTS since you don't want to take the egypt->jordan ferry, you have to go via israel, A LOT of TIME and A LOT OF MONEY.

    • @VK-sz4it
      @VK-sz4it 7 років тому +1

    Someone let Half as Interesting find this comment. Technically you can go from Sagres all the way to Singapore, but Google Maps does not say so. According to Google Maps, you cannot enter China from any country, when actually you can. This is because China, for some reason, does not allow for foreign companies to draw maps of them with precision. This causes bridges and highways to "disconnect" when Chinese borders are shown on a map.
